The Great Resignation is here. Now what?

Early in 2021, you might have heard the term “The Great Resignation.” The term originated from Anthony Klotz, an associate professor of management at Texas A&M University who studied the exodus of hundreds of workers in the United States. He made a prediction that people will continue leaving their jobs at above-average rates for the next two to three Althoughyears. The Great Resignation has been happening in the United States at a greater intensity since 2021, employee retention also continued to challenge Canadian employers. According to a report released by Statistics Canada in March 2022, employers sought to fill 915,500 job vacancies in the last quarter of 2021, which is 80 per cent more than in 2019 and 63.4 per cent more than in 2020. These numbers are definitely higher than pre-pandemic levels in Canada and they are very alarming for any organization. In a 2022 Microsoft Work Index study, it reported that globally, including Canada, 53 per cent of employees are more likely to prioritize their health and well being over work than prior to the pandemic. On the other hand, 52 per cent of Gen Z and Millennials are considering changing employers this year, which is up three percent year over year. Meanwhile, according to a 2022 Bank of Canada report, 19.3 per cent of respondents planned to leave their job over the following 12 months, while this number was only at 17.9 per cent in the quarter prior to the pandemic. While the statistics are overwhelming, it is very clear that employees are putting their foot down to prioritize the things that are important to them, whether it’s their health, family, or they are simply re-evaluateing the way that they want to work or where they want to work. With this type of trend, the employee’s market will continue to be strong, and experts expect it to continue for the remainder of 2022 and beyond. Who knows how long it will last, but there is certainly a lot of benefits to job seekers and anyone looking for a change in their current careers given the vast number of opportunities available in the

The CRS system and Express Entry selection

SEPTEMBER 1 - 15, 2022 PILIPINO EXPRESS PAGE 5

Michael Scott is a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC, R525678) who has 30 years of experience with Immigration Canada and the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program. He currently works as a licensed consultant with Immigration Connexion International Ltd. Contact him at 204-691-1166 or 204-227-0292. E-mail: mscott.ici@gmail.com.

The quickest way to increase the overall CRS score is to obtain Canadian work experience or to complete additional education. If you have one post-graduation certificate, you can receive 112 points. This score can be increased to 119 points if you complete an additional one year of studies. You should not forget to include a sibling you have in Canada because they are worth an additional 15 points. Further candidates who are eligible for provincial nomination may be given 600 points on their CRS score. The conclusion is that there are things all candidates can do to enhance their CRS scores. Examine the past scores to determine if the candidate pool is getting harder to match or easier, but first of all, do not despair. If you are not selected, do something to increase your CRS score or consider other options such as coming under temporary immigration as an international foreign student or overseas foreign worker. This will be the preliminary step you require in order to be selected.

Since its introduction on January 1, 2015, the federal Express Entry system has brought thousands of skilled workers to Canada. The challenge faced by all applicants was first to obtain the highest number of assessment points in order to be selected from the online Expression of Interest (EOI) data base. The question is how to maximize your potential assessment points. There are some things in the Comparative Ranking System (CRS) that cannot be changed, such as your age at time of submission, but marital status, education, work experience and English and/ or French language proficiency can all be altered. The change is important because the higher the points earned, the greater the chance of selection, which means receiving an invitation to apply (ITA) for Canadian permanent residence through the Express Entry system. The Comparative Ranking System The Comparative Ranking System (CRS) is a points-based system used to assess all profile submissions with the Express Entry pool. It is used to assess your skills, education, language ability, work experience, and other considerations such as close family supports. The Canadian government’s studies on the outcomes of economic class immigrants takes into consideration predictions of a candidate’s potential for success in the Canadian labour market. The maximum CRS score is 1,200 points: 600 under core, spousal, and skill transferability components; and 600 points under the additional point’s categories. Beyond the core of age, education, work experience and language facility, additional points are given for provincial nomination (600 points), arranged employment (50 or 200 points), Canadian post-secondary education graduation (15 or 30 points), second language, French for example, proficiency (25 or 30 points) and a sibling in Canada (15 Candidatespoints). who submit an EOI must update their profiles to reflect changes in the various categories. Some updates such as age or expiration of your language test will be triggered automatically. Others such as a job offer or provincial nomination or an improved language test result would result in an increase in the CRS score but only after the change is entered. How to change your CRS score You should check your potential CRS score before submitting the EOI but only IRCC can give you the actual score upon submission of your online profile. This information is helpful because you can compare your potential selection with the scoring of current or past Express Entry selections from the candidate pool. Age is important so the sooner you maximize your chances by applying early before you age any further. If you are between the ages of 20 and 29 you receive the highest points for age and this decreases over 30 until age 45, which is given 0 points. In terms of language proficiency, it is important to understand that your score is based on four abilities: reading, speaking, listening, and writing. Each is given a separate score according to the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). Consider the difference in scoring between CLB 4 and CLB 9. You should be aiming for the highest ranking possible, especially a base score of CLB 7 in all four language categories because this is required for the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), which is one of the three programs, along with the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). It is important to enter your foreign work experience as well as any work you have done inside Canada. For example, a combination of one year of foreign skilled work experience (O, A or B level) along with CLB 7 in language is 13 points. If you have two or more years of foreign work, the score can receive an additional 25 or 50 points.

The Burgos summer adventure

Ninong Dale with his inaanak Dahlia and kumpare, Dennis de Jesus Jr., in Calgary that province. Not much to see on the highway, but oh my, it is an easy drive. Child #4 took the wheel for a bit and did great! Upon arrival in Manitoba, we stopped at my sister’s acreage just outside of Brandon. There we reconnected with Ate/Tita Net, my brother-in-law, and nieces. We rode their little tractor, and I even had the chance to mow about two acres of land. This was particularly exciting for me as I don’t have a lawn in B.C. I’ve gotten my fix for another year until we can visit again. The end of the road was Winnipeg and surrounding area. Our goal was to visit our granddaughter who turned two in August. We had only met her once before when she was just a week old. Visits with grandma, Lola, and Child #1 were also tops on our to-do list as we last visited as a family back in 2018. We got our fix of Lola’s yummy cooking and a BBQ with grandma. Life doesn’t get much better than that. Since we’re on the topic of eating, we made sure to stop at one of my favourite restaurants in Winnipeg, Johnny’s Maples Pizza located in the Maples area. I desperately needed to have one of their Fatboy burgers. There is nothing like it anywhere else. I devoured that meal and enjoyed every second of it. Johnny himself stopped by for a chat and welcomed us back. If burgers aren’t your style, they have amazing chicken souvlaki or gyro pitas. And don’t get me started on their lemon rice soup…OMG! The last leg of our trip was much more rushed as we just wanted to get home. After a quick stop in Calgary we found ourselves back in B.C. in midAugust. Made it to the ferry with time to spare and in our own beds by nightfall.Thisis the abbreviated version of our trip; there was obviously so much more that happened in between. In the end, we’ve made more memories and will hopefully have the chance to do it again next year. Dale manages the communications department for a school district in B.C.

Back to work, school, and reality (insert sad face emoji here). As crummy as it is, I am very thankful we were able to have the opportunity to have a summer vacation after two years of being apart from family and friends. I hope you were able to take the time to visit loved ones you couldn’t see since before the pandemic began. As for our brood, we packed a lot into three weeks. We left Vancouver Island in mid-July and started to make our way east, eventually stopping in Winnipeg. In all, we made stops in four provinces for a total of almost 7,000 kilometres. It was an epic road trip full of family visits and fun. Our first stop was in Revelstoke, B.C. to ride on the Pipe Mountain Coaster. Think of it as a solo ride on a roller coaster, except you have all the control while careening down the side of a mountain, while not wearing ANY safety gear. Needless to say, we survived and will gladly do it again.Next stop was Calgary, home of the Stampede and most pickup trucks per capita in Canada (this is not a confirmed fact, I am only guessing by using my eyes). Here we visited the majority of our extended family. Visited my inaanak, Dahlia, as she celebrated her baptism. You can call me Ninong We also took the time to do the only vacation-y thing, which was visit West Edmonton Mall’s indoor water and amusement parks. I still have the bruises from being thrown around some of the “funnest” waterslides known to exist. If you get the chance, this is a must-do experience. Alberta did not disappoint, even though we visited on their hottest days of the year up until that point. Next stop for the Burgos Bus were gas stations in Saskatchewan. As you know, I have a love-hate relationship with

Feng shui tips for making money fast them. It’s better to have no plants than to have plants that don’t look healthy. Kathryn Weber has over 20+ years of feng shui study, practice and professional consultation. Her witty, no-nonsense style appeals to audiences, making her a popular speaker and radio show guest. She is often called on by media to explain feng shui in down-to-earth terms, and has been featured in Seventeen, First for Women, Faces, Conceive, Martial Arts Professional, and Natural Health magazines, and on websites around the world.

One of my clients always keeps $200 in her wallet, and when she’s tempted to buy something, she can remind herself that she has plenty of money for it but chooses not to spend it. And this keeps a nice sum in her wallet at all times making her feel wealthier.

4. Point the way. We hear a lot about poison arrows in feng shui, but sometimes there are good arrows – especially when the arrows are pointing money into your home. Add an arrow (or three) made out of Chinese coins under your rug at the front door. This literally points the way for money and tells it “Go in here!”

7. The look of wealth. Put your best image forward by dressing the part of someone who has money and who makes money. Get your handbag and wallet cleaned out and add money to your wallet. Even filling your wallet with $20 in $1 bills can be a big “wad” of cash. Make sure you look the way you want to feel – flush with money.

8. Clear up any “money drains” in your home. To open the way for money, make sure you do a good decluttering in your house. Watch, too, for things that look damaged or broken (glasses, plates, windows) and get rid of them. Go around your house and make sure there is no dripping water anywhere or toilets that are leaking and constantly refilling –these symbolize loss of money. If you have one of those plants that has tendrils that you pin up or a sad plant that doesn’t look full, lush, and healthy – pitch

It happens to everyone. Your brakes go out, the air conditioner dies, and your dog has to have surgery. When bad luck happens, it happens in threes, as the saying goes. And when that much happens all at once, it can take a toll on your finances. Suddenly, that darling pair of shoes goes away, and maybe you get behind on your rent or car payment. That’s when you need money fast, and feng shui can help! Feng Shui Fast Money Tips 1. Make change. Money is just another form of energy and when it stops or comes to a trickle, or you’re met by surprise expenses, you need something to happen quickly.

5. Get your financial house in order. Keep money flowing in your life by keeping your finances neat and orderly. The more you pay attention to money, the more it pays attention to you. Some people think it’s crass to be financially focused, but that’s mistaken thinking. It’s also a mistake to think that if you aren’t rich, there’s no point in keeping your financial life orderly or trying at investing. Clean out your files or create a filing system to keep your bills and payments orderly. Once you begin paying close attention to money, your energy shifts, and money starts coming in. Ignore money and money will ignore you. Pay attention to it, and it will reward you. 6. Start seeing gains. My grandmother used to say that “water draws water.” What she meant by that is that sometimes, drawing water from a pump required putting water into it to help it come out. It’s like wealthy people who just keep getting wealthier – water draws water. Once there’s financial momentum, the energy builds on itself. It’s also why when you have money problems, they also stay withYouyou. have to break the draining money momentum by accumulating money. Find a clear jar to put money into every day. Put whatever you can into it – a small bill or some coins –just do it every day. This is especially potent if you do it beginning on a New Moon. Put your money jar or an account where you see it so your eyes can take in that image of money growing. It sends a message to your mind and to the universal energy that you are focused on money. Keep a positive thought as you put the money into the jar or account and focus on the feeling of money growing for you. Feng shui is very focused on symbolism and seeing money grow on a daily basis will help draw money to you.

One of the fastest ways to make a shift in your energy that makes a change in your bank account is to move 27 things in your house. Be sure to keep count and move something in every room. 2. Spruce up your front door. Without question, the money is always at the front door. Give your porch and front door area a good cleaning. Is there a broken light bulb or a dying plant? Anything that doesn’t work properly, look auspicious or that’s dirty (like a light fixture with dead bugs in it), will lower your financial energy. Spruce up your front door and walkway. Add a pretty pot of flowers here and keep the porch light on and the area will-lit to invite money and opportunity to your home.

3. Focus on the foyer. Once you’re past the front door, your foyer is the next area that is key to income and inviting opportunity into your home. Make sure the foyer looks auspicious, with bright lighting and an attractive entranceway. Check that there are no dings or paint scuffs on the wall. If the carpet is dirty, clean it or add a new rug. Add a vase of pretty flowers and make sure the area is clear and that shoes aren’t bunched at the front door. Energy lowers by an overabundance of shoes, so if you have a pile here, remove them and put them in a closet. Consider adding a picture of water here to give your foyer even more of a financial boost.
