Spotlight on PIM

360 Degree, A New Perspective of Viewing Education 23 August 2016

PIM’s Faculty of Education, Masters in Education Leadership hosted a seminar on “360 Degree, A New Perspective Viewing Education”. The talk brought together several thought leaders from the academe and the industry.

The event was graced by many education luminaries including former ministers of the Royal Thai Government; Professor Dr. Krasae Chanawongse and Mr. Veerasak Futrakul.

PIM hosts national conference to promote innovation in Thai businesses in global market 29 July 2016

This national event attracted hundreds of industry leaders and academics presenting their experiences in promoting creativity in business to increase markets from locally-driven to globally accessible. One hundred and sixty presentations were accepted with 100 being delivered orally during the conference. The remaining sixty topics

were presented in the form of posters. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sompop Manarunsan was also present, giving a talk on how PIM and the business sector can help achieve Thailand 4.0. He noted some ways such as being more open to utilize and maximize technology in agriculture and in small and medium enterprises in general.

Diplomatic Connections Embassy of the Russian Federation to Thailand 22 August 2016

This meeting allowed the CP ALL and PIM international networking team to introduce the CP Group, CP ALL specifically, and in more detail Panyapiwat Institute of Management (PIM), CP’s primary education project. H.E. Dr. Kirill Barsky expressed his interested in PIM’s work-study model, particularly since the Russian government is seeking to invest and redevelop the federation’s current

education sector. Other discussion topics were centered on possible ways to collaborate in the future in terms of business and education. The courtesy visit adjourned with H.E. Dr. Kirill Barsky noting that he would be interested in visiting PIM’s campus in the future.

Mr. Sherzod Soatov,Vice-Consul, Consulate General of the Republic of Uzbekistan welcomed the team back and shared some developing trends in Uzbekistan in the field of international trading and education. While faculty and student mobility is still yet to be fully explored by Uzbeks, Vice-Consul Sherzod Soatov expressed his appreciation for PIM’s proactive approach to hosting an international community at the Institute’s campus. Discussions covered ways to collaborate in the future in terms of business and education.

Mr. Anuar Akhmetov, Counsellor, Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan provided useful information about the state of the educational system in Kazakstan. He shared some of relevant activities his mission has explored with Thai entities and provided valuable advice for the CP ALL and PIM international networking team, should there be an imperative to actively pursue students from Kazakstan. He also noted that the PIM’s short courses could prove to be interesting for Kazaks seeking exposure in Thailand. This meeting was the first interaction between the mission of Ukraine to Thailand and CP and PIM. H.E. Ambassador Andrii Beshta, welcomed the team noting that the CP group is one of major players in Thailand’s business sector. He expressed appreciation for PIM’s vision to empower the youth of Thailand to assimilate into roles projected and is essential to the growing labor force. Other discussion topics were on ways to collaborate in the future in terms of business and education, particularly in the form of blended company visits and short courses.

H.E. Mrs. Kshenuka Dhireni Senewiratne, Ambassador, Embassy of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka welcomed and generously advised the team on Sri Lankan institutions that could be partners for CP ALL and PIM. She also shared some upcoming projects wherein CP ALL and PIM may be able to contribute to due to the company’s experience in agro-industry and distribution/logistics. Ms. Tanarat Teeratanakiat, Deputy Director, Office of the President, PIM graciously invited H.E. Embassy of the Lao PDR 28 September 2016

This meeting was organized by CP ALL and PIM in order to reconnect with Mr. Bounxay Chanhsina, Counselor (Education & Culture), Embassy of the Lao PDR. Dr. Usanee Kulintornprasert updated the counselor of some of the programs and activities that PIM has embarked on since their last appointment with the Embassy of the Lao PDR. She also invited Mr. Bounxay to maximize the short course program opportunities with CP ALL and PIM. Mr. Bounxay likewise shared relevant activities of the embassy with regards to education in the country and student mobility. He invited the team to visit Lao PDR and recommended some institutions that have similarities with PIM and therefore may have greater potential to develop joint activities and programs.

Nepal’s Former Prime Minister visits PIM 26 August 2016

PIM management representatives, together with selected students, received the Honorable Mr. Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli, who generously graced the campus on 26 August 2016. He expressed his happi ness upon learning that PIM is host to several Nepali students who are all learning via the work-based education model. He also shared his thoughts on Thailand and Nepal’s longstanding relationship.

PIM signs MOU with Stenden University of Applied Sciences, hosts Grand Tour

September 27 2016 marked the beginning of the official partnership between Stenden University of Applied Sciences (Stenden) and PIM, as signed by Mr. Leendert Klaassen, President of the Executive Board, Stenden and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sompop Manarungsan, President, PIM. H.E. Mr. Karel Hartogh, Ambassador, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Bangkok, Thailand was present to witness this important professionals, academic partners and friends, and students to the CP ALL Academy. Mr. Phornvit highlighted the importance of creating a balance between rigorous study and incurring relevant practical experience in order to become a competitive hire in the future, during his key note. The second speaker, also a Stenden alumnus, Mr. Hans Van Den Born, Executive Director, Netherlands Thai Chamber of Commerce narrated his unique work experience having had the fortune to work in different industries milestone for both

institutions and countries. Mr. Klaas-Wybo van der Hoek, Vice President of the Executive Board, Stenden and PIM’s Mr. Phornvit Phacharintanakul, Vice President for Academic Affairs were also in attendance. After the signing ceremony of the memorandum of understanding, a seminar carrying the theme “21st Century Skills: Academic and Industry Collaboration” brought together over 300 indicating that honing soft skills is key to climbing the career ladder. A panel discussion rounded up the afternoon session with Ms. Sandy Loup, Academic Dean, Stenden Thailand and Ms. Noppasorn Siripakde (Oy), Director of Human Resources, Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park joining the keynote speakers as panelists. Mr. Prantik Bordoloi from Stenden Thailand served as moderator. A celebratory cocktail/mocktail party soon followed the panel discussion, hosted by PIM’s Faculty of Hotel and Tourism Management (HTM).

PIM co-organizes regional workshop on One Health with Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health and Massey University, New Zealand The ten day regional workshop on One Health welcomed 24 policy makers and fellows from public health and animal health sectors in four South Asian countries; Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal on 28 July 2016 at Best Western Plus Wanda Grand Hotel.

Dr. Amnuay Gajeena, Director General, Department of Disease Control of Public Health, Thailand delivered the opening remarks on 28 July 2016 at Best Western Plus Wanda Grand Hotel noting One Health’s innovative approach to look at and deal with human health, animal health, and environmental health as “One”. He then underlined the importance of raising awareness to achieve One Health’s global and ambitious objectives, particularly from the South Asian and Thai perspectives.

Dr. Saowapak Himjoy (MPH) shared experiences in implementing One Health programs in the kingdom at the provincial level which was met with high interest from the participating policy makers.

World-renowned epidemiologist Professor Emeritus Roger Morris, who has been at the forefront of efforts to control outbreaks such as bird-flu virus and mad cow disease, was the key expert of this workshop.

Government Official from Shanghai visits PIM 19 August 2016

Ms. Li Hai Yun of the Communist Party, Secretary of Zhen Yu Putuo District, Shanghai visited PIM as part of her study tour, specifically to learn more about the CP Group. As guest of Mr. Dhanin Chearavanont, she expressed how impressed she was with the study model of PIM

saying that students are lucky to secure a job within the CP Group after graduation. Furthermore, she noted how encouraging CP ALL is to its students particularly due to the option. She was also toured at some of CP ALL and PIM facilities.

During his visit, President and Professor Yoshihito Okinaga shared with PIM representatives that Teikyo University will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. He added that in 2018, the university plans to open new international programs and in line with this, will be sending more students to Southeast Asia

for internships. “We may also organize overseas study programs on economics, culture, and people to visit Thailand, as hosted by PIM�, he said, expressing that professors from Teikyo may also join the exchange and teach at PIM for a certain period of time.

This visit follows a previous meeting wherein Mr. Sittipornchai Rattana, a recruitment specialist Siam Michelin and PIM’s Mr. Denchai Pringthaisong, Director, Office of Student Potential Development last June to determine opportunities for hosting interns from PIM. Mr. Siam Chocksawangwong, VP for Administrative Affairs, PIM hosted the top-level visitor, Ms. Suchala Thephabutra and continued with the topics from the

previous session. Ms. Suchala expressed her interest in PIM’s unique work and study model, saying that Siam Michelin would be happy to welcome some interns from PIM, beginning with qualified students from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology. She also said that she will be able to assist in advising PIM should the Institute request for guest lecturers from Siam Michelin.

China giant in research and development of robot applications, Shanghai SIASUN Robot & Automation Co., Ltd. (Siasun) shows interest in working with PIM during representative visit on 25 August 2016.

Siasun’s visit is an extension of the soon-to-be launched project with True, Smart Home. Siasun invited PIM to consider launching a research and development center that would initially provide support to the CP Group. The team also mentioned that they can help develop textbooks and the curriculum for PIM’s Faculty of Engineering and Technology, since the faculty is currently developing

a program in robotics. The discussion covered possibilities for internships at Siasun for excellent students who are proficient with robotic design and have a good command of the English language. SSRA also shared that they plan to open an office in Thailand, wherein PIM students can also intern and work as sales and service staff.

First International Freshy Party 28 July 2016 marked PIM’s first International Freshy Party, a celebration of the Institute’s commitment to welcoming its increasing international student population. With close to 100 students and staff re presenting over 20 countries, the Office of International Relations brought together the Institute for a night of cultural festivities.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sompop Manarungsan, President, opened the program expressing how important it is for PIM to create an environment that can accommodate international students. Highlights of the party included six performances by students from Cambodia, China, and Myanmar.

Short Courses at PIM PIM was fortunate to host twelve groups of short course participants from the months of July to August 2016. A total of 167 university students joined the tailor-made courses hailing from two countries, Taiwan and Japan. The programs were prepared in close coordination with counterparts in each organization to ensure that the general interest of each group was prioritized

and met. Some key activities included learning how to play the ancient Chinese game “GO�, seeing the demonstration 7-Eleven store, and visiting companies such as the joint-venture CP-Meiji factory, Royal Umbrella Rice Factory, Ichitan Group, CP RAM Innovation Center, and Uni-President.
