SPOTLIGHT ON PIM
PIM hosts inaugural Global Forum on Fintech’s pivotal role in evolving to cashless society; Institute committed to financial literacy 17 May 2018 Panyapiwat Institute of Management (PIM) sets the stage for a stimulating discussion on an impending issue on the evolution of the means of payment which is set to shape society, business, and individual daily lives. Opening the forum, PIM President, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Sompop Manarungsan addressed the audience
noting how important is it for PIM to bring together 200 of Bangkok’s key players in business, academe, and government to begin the discussion on one of Thailand’s most important issues today. Inaugural PIM Global Forum 2018
Assoc.Prof.Dr. Sompop Manarungsan
Mr. Dechpol Lamwilai, Senior Vice President, Business Development, Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) shared his thoughts on the topic starting with emphasizing that achieving a cashless society is merely an evolution of the means of payment. “Many may not be aware that the cost to physically manage cash across the nation costs 200 billion THB annually. What banking institutions are trying to do is shift from being dependent on physical cash and rather focus on creating added value through online transactions.” he said. Mr. Tanyapong Thamavaranukupt, President, Ascend Money emphasized on how important information is. With online transactions, information becomes a critical tool in understanding consumer behavior, not just for companies but also for the individual consumer. Simple transactions build onto
become a full record which can be helpful for small businesses, like a noodle shop, to develop proof of their financial health. He added that Thailand is the first country to launch a standardised Quick Response (QR) code for payments is linked to all e-payment institutions. Ms. Pipavin Sodprasert, Country Manager (Thailand), Ant Financial Services began with saying that cash is an instrument. She said that Alibaba’s philosophy is to remove friction and that the act of handling cash, and subsequently change, is friction. “In China, cashless payments are even more secure due to the existence of fake bank notes,“ she added. Dr. Wit Sittivaekin, TV anchor and sports journalist, moderated the forum.

University of Borüs, Sweden Program: Master’s degree in International Modern Trade Business Management (iMTM) I hope more students get the chance to experience studying at PIM as an exchange student. It was good to learn from lecturers from different places in the world with different backgrounds who contributed to the interesting topics. And it was nice to get to know new class mates.
I also liked the active teaching methods that PIM offered in the courses. We worked in groups a lot, that will contribute to my ability to work with different people later. It was nice to go on the company visits and interesting to see how things work function in the real life at those work sites. The courses felt relevant to the program and for my future career.

Program: Master’s degree in International Modern Trade Business Management (iMTM) I never thought that I would have a chance to come Thailand as an exchange student. I was very excited to come to PIM. The teachers and students here are friendlier than I thought. During this time, I participated in many special activities here, and I enjoyed every activity very much. The company visit courses I attended enable me to get close contact with leaders of large enterprises and learn firsthand wisdom from them. I have experienced different cultures in my four-month study and life in PIM. And I have gained a lot of friendship. In the future, I am also looking forward to visit teachers and classmates in PIM, beautiful Thailand.

NHL Stenden Thailand Diversity Week at PIM
In the end of June, Stenden Thailand wrapped up its academic year 2017-18 and a look back at the last ten months reveals a long list of student activities and events the NHL Stenden students were involved in. A total of 247 students joined one of the 10-week minor programmes offered by Stenden Thailand here on PIM campus. As part of the socalled Grand Tour concept, third year NHL Stenden students can switch to any of the campus sites in the Netherlands, South Africa, Qatar, Bali or Thailand and study a specialization programme. In Thailand, students can choose between International Relations, Spa & Health Business Concepts, Event Management, Marketing & Management in Asia, Community-based Tourism and Digital Marketing.
Although the programmes are currently only offered to NHL Stenden students, the time on PIM campus allows both Thai and international students to mingle with a variety of student activities outside the classrooms. The friendships usually already start right at the airport when groups of motivated PIM students welcome the international students upon arrival. The first highlight of the programme follows right after when PIM hosts all NHL Stenden students for a welcome dinner, creating a great opportunity to get to know each other. Besides the yummy food, the welcome dinners often turn into a big karaoke party with joint performances of PIM and NHL Stenden staff and students.

Sports Day
One of the highlights of the past few months was certainly the Summer Festival, a collection of different events and activities that were initiated by students of the Event Management programme and co-organised with PIM staff and students. A fantastic effort that included a whole week of fun encounters, starting with a Diversity Week to underline intercultural friendships and celebrate the mix of students’ backgrounds on campus.

Universities Fighting World Hunger 2018
The event kicked off with the Wonder Wall, a wall stand which offered students the possibility to write, paint or draw anything they are proud of in their country. Initially projected for an entire week, in just two days the wall came to life after it got full of colors and messages in more than five different languages. This was followed by flag parades, movie nights, World Cup activities, meet in speed, and the Diversity Hunt which was the most interactive and competitive of all programs. The eventful week was topped by breaking an official Guinness World Record when 158 students
stood up simultaneously to raise awareness for hunger issues as part of the Universities Fighting World Hunger initiative. In the end, everyone met at the international food festival as the closing event of this year’s summer festival. All in all, a long list of achievements in our striving for intercultural exchange of students and a great outlook at many more to come in the next years.
