Prof. Dr. Sompop Manarungsan, PIM President, expressed gratitude and pleasure for His Excellency’s visit to the campus. “PIM is interested in learning from Kenya’s expertise, particularly in the field of agro-industry,” he added. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sompop also mentioned that several faculty members are currently working on related activities that His Excellency may find valuable for future collaboration. H.E. Patrick S. Wamoto, EBS, states that the model PIM is using is different from what is available in Kenya. He expressed the same sentiments with CP Group’s Chairman, Mr. Dhanin Chearavanont, agreeing that every organization is only as good as the people it has. Upon the receipt of the scholarship, His Excellency expressed his deep
gratitude and articulated that the concept of a corporate university is a wonderful idea that Kenyan students would be pleased to explore. He is looking for ways to add value to areas in Kenyan industry, a process that CP and Thailand more broadly, is able to implement well. Dr. Usanee Kulintornprasert, Director, International Relations gave further details on the thrusts of PIM as an academic, research, and industry-focused university to which His Excellency underlined his interest in closely working together as he believes that the work-study model PIM employs will be useful for Kenyans to gain practical and relevant experience in preparation to joining the workforce.

Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia to increase ties with PIM
High level government officials from the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, Mr. Arif Suyoko, Minister Counsellor, and Dr. Yunardi, Education Attache visit PIM to get to know the concepts that drive Thailand’s Corporate University on 7 October 2015.
Dr. Yunardi (fourth from left) and Mr. Arif Suyoko (third from left) receive scholarship for Indonesians to consider higher education at PIM Welcoming the Indonesian diplomats to the PIM campus, Dr. Somrote Komolavanij, Assistant to the President for Academic Planning, introduced PIM as a place of learning where young people are prepared to join the workforce. He added that he looks forward to learning from Indonesia’s long history of influence in education in the region which could enhance and further contribute to Thailand’s mission in education. Dr. Somrote also shared that PIM aspires to see more Indonesian students in the Institute and presented the representatives of the Indonesian government a scholarship for a deserving Indonesian to study at PIM. Dr. Yunardi expressed his gratitude for PIM’s generosity and looks forward to an opportunity to initiate ties and activities with PIM. He congratulated PIM’s efforts in implementing work-based education at possibly the largest scale in the region and commended the model’s focus on involving students in real world situations at the onset of the programs. Dr. Usanee Kulintornprasert, Director, Office of International Relations provided more details on PIM’s emphasis in integration with industry priorities.“We make sure that students receive relevant work experiences and encourage

them to provide solutions to any issues they may encounter while deployed in their workplaces,” she underlined. She added that an example is organizing innovation contests to provide incentives to students who can deliver innovative solutions and contribute to PIM’s partner companies. Mr. Arif Suyoko complimented PIM’s rapid increase in student intakes and mentioned that learning from PIM’s recruitment model would be helpful to Indonesian universities. “The interest to study in Thailand has been steadily increasing for Indonesians particularly in business, I hope more Indonesians choose PIM due to the Institute’s uniqueness,” he added. With CP’s presence in Indonesia increasing, Mr. Arif noted that cooperation with Thai industries and universities is likely to intensify. Discussion topics included PIM’s expanding reach in the region, models on internships and corporate mentors, and mutual goals to contribute to raise the level of higher education in Asia.

Mr. Bounxay remarked that work-based education is an impressive study model that PIM is utilizing to the fullest. He mentioned that learning how PIM prepares students who will be “ready to work” showed how different PIM is from other institutions of higher learning. Discussion topics included how CP and PIM are able to build a wide network and how these relationships are maintained. Dr. Usanee Kulintornprasert noted that
although PIM is new compared to other universities, the Institute has established relationships with more than 50 universities, and is keen to build more in areas such as Europe and Australasia. In closing, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sompop awarded the Embassy of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, through Mr. Bounxay, a scholarship for Laotians to study a full time degree at PIM.

Massey University salutes PIM’s dedication to balancing science, technology, and business to serve society Hon. Steve Maharey, Vice-Chancellor and President of Massey University express positive outlook for future official partnership with PIM during his visit on 21 October 2015.
MU’s Hon. Steve Maharey and PIM’s Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sompop Manarungsan PIM President and one of Thailand’s key economic experts, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sompop Manarungsan agreed that PIM and MU have many aspirations in common particularly to innovation and agriculture. He commended MU’s significant contribution to New Zealand’s development and affirms that the Institute can learn a lot from one of New Zealand’s top ranking universities. Hon. Steve thanked the CP and PIM team for organizing a “tremendous visit that has given us a chance to talk about common interests especially in food and aviation.” He also noted that engaging and working alongside with the Institute will allow MU to share experiences and be as useful as possible.

Dr. Montri Congtrakultien, Dean, Faculty of Innovative Agricultural Management (IAM) mentioned how important it is for PIM to prepare qualified and work-ready students who understand modern farm techniques, possess entrepreneurial spirit, and are socially conscious.

William Angliss Institute (WAI) looks into complementary collaboration with PIM Melbourne-based specialist centre for hospitality, tourism, and culinary arts, William Angliss Institute (WAI) visits PIM campus and looks to explore complementary collaboration with Thailand’s Corporate University on 5 October 2015.

Mr. Wayne Crosbie, Director for International and Business Development, William Angliss Institute (WAI) commended PIM’s direct involvement with industries, noting how this approach has allowed WAI to flourish and remain independent for the past 75 years. With five campuses in China and close linkages with the ASEAN and Singaporean government, Mr. Wayne considers Australia to be a part of greater Asia. Mr. Phornvit Phacharintanakul, PIM’s Vice President for Academic Affairs, welcomed the opportunity to get to know one of Australia’s world famous institutions carrying an established history of success in preparing Ms. Puangpetch culinary and hospitality experts. relevant to the Institute’s mission to contribute to Thailand’s growing food industry. An overview of the current activities including internship opportunities for hotel and tourism management students at PIM was provided by Ms. Wisakha Vadhanapakorn and Mr. Puthapong Purushahansa. The session was concluded by a campus facilities tour and a visit to the 7-Eleven flagship store, followed by an immersion trip to Makro Food Service. This visit was arranged following an exploratory trip to Australia by CP ALL and PIM’s international development team, led by Mr. Siam Chocksawangwong in September 2015.

University of Boras continues discussion on possible academic collaboration

PIM Short Course Programs are designed for international students interested in expanding their knowledge in Asian business and culture. National Sun Yat-sen University talks research collaboration with PIM’s China-ASEAN Center
Top Taiwanese university, National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) explores ways to collaborate with PIM’s China-ASEAN Center on 1 September 2015.
PIM’s Mr. Pollasak Ruongpanyaroj and Dr. Tang Zhimin with NSYSU’s Prof. Samuel C. Y. Ku Dr. Tang Zhimin, Associate Professor and Dean of PIM’s International College welcomed the guests noting that at PIM, continuously improving the curriculum and delivery of programs shows the Institute’s commitment to raising the bar for higher education in Thailand. “Every program contains management components, a strong area for the CP Group as a whole. We invite professionals who bring real current experiences to our classes, exponentially increasing the value of education here at PIM,” he said.
Prof. Samuel C. Y. Ku, Director of Institute of China and Asia-Pacific Studies, NSYSU introduced the university as one that places equal emphasis on the teaching and research of humanities as well as science and engineering. He was joined by Dr. Tai Wan-Ping, Director, Department of International Business, National Sun Yat-sen University and Mr. PoChun Chuang, Institute of China and Asia-Pacific Studies. Discussion points included ways to collaborate in research covering both technical sciences and culture and the arts through PIM’s China-ASEAN Center. The center is currently working on many hot issues in Thailand and the region, such as trans-boundary issues and the enabling nature of IT in various businesses. Dr. Tang noted that interns are welcome to spend time at the center and contribute to its many ongoing research activities.

Ms. Mijeong Song, Managing Director explained that through participation in major exhibitions and targeted networking, the center increases familiarity of Korean foods and products in Thailand and encourages a positive image of Korean agricultural and fishery products through relationships between exporters and distributors. She was accompanied by Ms. Jiyeon Min who expressed that it is not easy to learn theory and practice at the same time, saying “PIM is very impressive, we would like to cooperate.”

Prof. Arnoud De Meyer, President, SMU expressed his gratitude for welcoming his team to PIM. He inquired about PIM’s iMBA program, stating that cooperation may be explored to complement each organization’s postgraduate business program. He was accompanied by Mr. Martin Tan, Executive Director, Institute of Societal Leadership; Ms. Chan Wai Leng, Director, Office of Advancement; Dr. James T.H. Tang, Dean and Professor of Political Science, School of Social Sciences and Special Advisor (China Initiatives); and Mr. Pang Eng Fong, Professor of Strategic Management (Practice), Lee Kong Chian School of Business. Dr. James also implemented an expert interview covering Thailand Workforce Analysis, specifically on skill gaps in the ASEAN, with key representatives led by Dr. Lertchai Suthamanon, Assistant to the President for Planning and Development. This research is being conducted by SMU with JP Morgan.

Nagaoka University of Technology discuss future programs with PIM
Nagaoka University of Technology (NUT) invites PIM to jointly develop and organize a symposium and student mobility options during a session on 13 October 2015.

The delegation was welcomed by members of PIM’s engineering faculty led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pisit Charnkeitkong, Dean and Assist. Prof. Dr. Paritud Bhandhudbanyong, Executive Director, Education and Special Project Development. Mr. Satoshi Matsunaga, Director of NUT Thailand commended PIM’s uniqueness and ability to make sure of CP’s wide network to develop more young leaders with
entrepreneurial skills. He was joined by NUT’s Professor Takashi Yukawa, Department of Information and Management Systems Engineering; Dr. Masato Aketagawa, Department of Mechanical Engineering; and Dr. Takahashi Kazumasa, Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering. Discussions covered possibilities for organizing a joint symposium in PIM and ways to collaborate for student mobility and internships.

Dr. Fan noted that the university has several international programs on offer, including fashion and product design, recognized as leading programs in Asia. Graduates from these programs are often recruited by top international

designers and firms. “SCU seniors may opt to spend 6 months in Shanghai as interns. In the future, they may consider Thailand because of the country’s position as an educational, commercial, and cultural hub in Southeast Asia,” he added. Discussions led to several opportunities for collaboration such as PIM to host interns and exchange students from SCU. SCU will be returning to Thailand on 25 November 2015 to ink an MOU with PIM.

Norton University sees potential ways to work together with PIM
Prof. Chan Sok Khieng, Rector of Cambodia’s top ranked Norton University (NU), expresses interest in learning from PIM’s experience in work-based education during his recent visit to the campus on 17 September 2015. He was accompanied by Dr. Michel Tranet, Professor of Archaeology.

He also commended CP’s investments and contribution to his nation, particularly in the agriculture sector. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Somrote Komolavanij, Assistant to the President for Academic Affairs noted that though PIM is small and new, the Institute is determined to see its graduates succeed in their chosen careers. He invited Prof. Chan to visit again; trips to CP subsidiaries can be included as exposure experiences for NU. Dr. Usanee Kulintornprasert, Director, Office of International Relations shared her experience visiting the impressive NU campus at Phnom Penh and getting to know the influence of matriculating at NU for Cambodians.
Ms.Thunwita Sirivorapat Puthpongsiriporn, Assistant Dean, Faculty of Business Administration continued the discussion by sharing the details of the upcoming bachelor degree program in International Modern Trade Management (iMTM). The iMTM program, scheduled for its first intake in August 2016, is comprised of 65% theory and 35% practical learning, aiming to prepare interested youth for a career in this particular field, which is one of CP’s core businesses. PIM’s Marketing Manager, Mr. Atit Koirala, detailed the uniqueness of the master’s degree in international business administration (iMBA) which is highlighted by rare courses on oriental philosophies in business and its China ASEAN focus. He added that scholarships are available for NU alumni who may wish to continue their education at PIM, provided that they satisfy the requirements for acceptance.

Prof. Dr. Sompop Manarungsan, expressed his appreciation for the high level delegation’s visit to PIM. He intimated CP ALL’s commitment to contributing to society by establishing PIM eight years ago. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sompop added that CP is also looking to share its accumulated wealth of experience and knowledge to all who may also be interested in pursuing higher education at PIM. Establishing PIM is also a way to develop human resources, carrying the CP DNA, to fulfil the needs of the growing conglomerate, he noted. Fr. Dr. Stephen acknowledged that Indian higher education systems are often too theoretical, and as a result graduates need to be retrained by the companies they join.”Don Bosco is now applying more project-based and practical approaches to learning, after seeing firsthand how this concept can change a person,” Fr. Dr. Stephen confirmed. He said that ADBU is looking to address the 40-50% food wastage in India due to ineffective distribution and packaging. Dr. Sunandan Baruah of the College of Engineering & Technology shared ADBU’s
research involving food packaging analysis technology using nano sensors. Fr. Dr. Stephen recognized CP’s world class experience in agro-products, making PIM an ideal partner to collaborate on this project. Asst. Prof. Dr. Datchakorn Tancharoen, PIM’s Vice Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology provided an overview of the academic and research activities at PIM, particularly in the field of computer engineering. Dr. Nattakarn Phaphoom mentioned that activities include responding to requirements from CP and translating these ideas to special projects and research at PIM. Discussions revealed that both universities are relatively new, supported by large organizations, and have substantially grown over the past eight years. Indicators include ADBU’s ability to develop 17 programs at the doctorate level in less than a decade and PIM’s rapid increase in annual student enrolment from 500 in 2007 to over 4000 this year. Some possible initial activities were identified including student exchanges.

MCIE Australia looks to opportunities with PIM
Ms. Pauline Drayton, Marketing Consultant for Melbourne City Institute of Education (MCIE) calls on PIM and CP ALL to explore ways to work together to maximize industry linkages on 7 September 2015.

Ms. Wisakha Vadhanapakorn of the Faculty of Management Sciences provided an overview of the hotel and tourism programs available at PIM. Ms. Pauline showed interest in many aspects of PIM’s work-based education model expressing, “PIM has good programs with good cooperation with industries.” She proceeded to introduce MCIE noting that the institution specializes in five core areas; business, hospitality, age-care, children, and disabilities. MCIE also matches students, who satisfy
specific qualifications, with companies to perform internships which are often one-year long programs. A discussion centered on niche subject areas that PIM currently specializes in such as oriental wisdom in business and service innovations in modern trade. Ms Pauline added, “There are a lot of innovative activities going on in PIM. It would be nice to try to develop a program together.”

Dr. Jai Bir Rai introduced BITAD as a center that aspires to be a premier regional development training institute in Asia focusing on areas including young leadership training, executive and managerial leadership training, management excellence, project management training, good governance skills, and social solution through econometric, financial and mathematical modeling. He stated that BITAD also organizes international events and conferences in Bhutan.
A team led by Ms. Parichart Buakao, Assistant to the President for Organizational Communication, expressed interest initiating activities and welcoming more students from Bhutan. Some possible initial collaborative activities include developing short term programs and study visits with BITAD. Dr. Usanee Kulintornprasert, Director of the Office of International Relations, and Dr. Veerisa Chotiyaputta, Assistant Director of PIM’s International College, also participated in the meeting.

Fruitful discussions with a delegation from the Singapore International School of Bangkok (SISB) led by Ms. Susan Lim Poh Suan, Head of School, sparks interest in developing staff development courses with PIM on 8 October 2015.

They were accompanied by representatives from their host, Asian Institute of Technology, led by Prof. Nitin Kumar Tripathi.

Mr. Derek Thitsanuthit of PIM’s International College welcomed the delegation, gave an overview of CP, and proceeded to give a special session on CP’s management principles. He highlighted how the group is directly impacted by CP Group CEO Mr. Dhanin Chearavanont’s adherence to oriental philosophies. CP’s investment in higher education is an example of how the group views giving back to society while also developing people with desirable traits to support the group’s main business lines; agro-industry, telecommunications, and marketing and distribution, he noted. Prof. Nitin Kumar Tripathi, AIT’s Director of Special Academic programs and key expert in remote sensing
and GIS, commended the innovative spirit of CP and the exciting activities PIM is involved in. As host to SRMU, he thanked PIM for receiving the Indian students, noting CP and PIM’s approach as completely different to higher education. He was accompanied by Dr. Raj Laxmi and Engr. Anurag Agarwal from SRMU. The session continued with Q&A sessions wherein both faculty and students from SRMU actively participated, inquiring on how CP overcame challenges on total quality management, packaging and distribution of products, future ventures, and PIM’s work-study model. The program concluded with a study tour in CP ALL’s 7-Eleven flagship store.

Kansai University Triangle Program
Five students from Kansai University (KU) complete exchange program prepared jointly by CP ALL and PIM on 7 September 2015.
KU interns at Khao C.P. This year’s second cohort from KU joined a two-week program which covered a wide range of knowledge areas including international business administration, an English language focus training session, comparative analysis of Thai and Japanese culture, and CP ALL’s signature internship experience. The program was led by Prof. Alexander Bennett, Prof. Ikeda Keiko, and Mr. Yokoyama Ryuta from KU’s Division of International Affairs. During the orientation program, KU faculty and students showed great interest in the growing internationality of PIM and the origins of the Institute. Prof. Alexander commended the large network PIM possesses through CP ALL’s industry partners and linkages and the Institute’s unique positioning as a corporate university.

The method of teaching and learning also sparked several discussions mostly towards the delivery and effectiveness of work-based education. The program also consisted of several field trips to broaden the participants understanding about Thailand’s business context, culture, and society. The interns were taken to places such as the Chitralada Agricultural Royal Project; Khao C.P., a rice research and refinery facility in Ayutthya province which produces the Royal Umbrella brand of jasmine rice. Special courses on Thai classical dance and Thai arts including food and flower garland preparations were arranged for the students. The interns were also given an opportunity to join sessions of PIM’s international MBA (iMBA) program.

Chuo University Global Internship Program Five students from Chuo University (CU), Japan complete exchange program prepared jointly by CP ALL and PIM which was held from 31 August to 11 September 2015.

Liby Group’s Mr. Wang Bin, General Manager, Detergent Business Unit and Mr. Rao Bing, Manager, Southeast Asia Market visited PIM to meet China-ASEAN experts based in PIM. They were accompanied by Mr. Chen Xiaoqun, Vice President, CP Lotus. Dr. Tang Zhi Min, Dean of PIM’s International College and primary expert on China ASEAN studies, shared some relevant experiences pertaining to doing business in China and its relation to Southeast Asia. He gave his
preliminary analysis on Liby Group’s competitiveness in the Thai market and offered advice on where they should focus to ensure market penetration. CP ALL’s Mr. Adisorn Wongjittapoke and PIM’s Mr. Pollasak Ruongpanyaroj accompanied the representatives from Liby Group to visit the CP ALL headquarters and Makro. An agreement was subsequently signed with the Liby Group and CP Group China on 22 September 2015.

He believes that linkages with corporations and educational institutions will become increasingly important in the years to come.
