PIM’s Global Efforts Blossom
International Mobility: A Key Priority The year 2015 proved to be one that pushed PIM to be nimble and swift, continuously adapting to opportunities while carefully nurturing relationships with the Institute’s esteemed partners. By initiating and sustaining discussions with close to 200 entities related to international education, particularly with higher education institutions, PIM’s Office of International Relations had the distinguished opportunity to create linkages with more than 1,500 individuals. These activities have led to the signing of 15 official agreements with higher education institutions located in six countries. Such connections will serve PIM’s long-term mission to promote the CP DNA, which puts value in industriousness, humility, teamwork, and most of all excellence. The Office of International Relations more than doubled in terms of headcount, in order to accommodate the increase in volume and variety of international activities. This was a welcome challenge that allowed the team to develop and mature as individuals, and also form into functional sub-groups to cater to geographic priority areas strategically. The Office also launched Global Connect, an initiative that includes this newsletter, now on its fourth issue, and primarily serves to promote internationalization at an Institute-level. As 2016 unfolds, we look forward to working even closer with our partners and friends by creating meaningful programs that contribute to the international development of higher education. It is important for PIM to partner well to ensure that every activity brings us closer to becoming a sustainable center of practical knowledge... developing leaders that are destined to make a distinguishable mark in the world. I hope that the activities we share through Global Connect will be valuable to all readers and inspire discussion to promote cooperation, as we work together to strive to achieve internationality, in its truest sense.

Finnish Ambassador to Bangkok invites PIM to explore the nation’s renowned educational models

“A good diploma does not always guarantee a job, and vocational education is often under-valued in Thailand,” H.E. Kirsti Westphalen, Ambassador of Finland to Thailand said, reflecting on Finland’s similar situation over 20 years ago. She added that the academic channel and vocational training are not completely separate, they complement one another and there is a possibility to cross-over at some point or another. She led the participants, particularly PIM, in a discussion on competence building and results-based reviews that can aide in alleviating the misconception surrounding vocational training. This talk was delivered as part of the sixth board meeting of the organization, Thailand Education Deans Council, hosted by PIM’s Faculty of Education on 18 December 2015. These regular high-level meetings are held to promote dialogues among stakeholders and decision makers in Thailand higher education.
PIM hosts China’s Zhejiang University Special Lecture on Knowing and Doing Prof. Dong Ping, Distinguished Professor of Chinese Philosophy, Director of Chinese Thought and Culture Research Institute, Zhejiang University delivers illuminating speech on practical learning based on ancient Chinese philosophies at PIM on 17 November 2015. “If you wait until you know everything, opportunities will pass you by,” Prof. Dong Ping emphasized during his session titled “The Unity of Knowing and Doing: Infinite Transition in the State of Life.” He advocated the philosophies of Wang Yang Wing, a politician who thrived during the Ming Dynasty, who is considered by many as the key proponent of practical approaches in learning. Honored guests from Chulalongkorn University led by Assoc. Prof. Han Xi, Chinese Director, Confucius Institute and representatives from the CP Lotus Corporation Mr. Li Wenhai, Executive Senior Vice Chairman and CEO, and Mr. Chen Xiaoqun, Vice President were present during this special session hosted by PIM’s China ASEAN Studies Center. PIM launches new bachelor program on international modern trade business management
Festivities mark the launch of PIM’s new bachelor program on modern trade management, highlighted by a keynote from distinguished guests, H.E. Dr. Chaiyong Satjipanon, former Thai ambassador to the United States; Mr. Matyawongse Amatyakul, trade expert from the Department of International Trade, Ministry of Commerce; and Mr. Somboon Prasitjutrakul, former President of DKSH (Thailand) on 26 November 2015.

Dr. Chaiyong Satjipanon; Mr. Somboon Prasitjutrakul; and Dr. Sriprai Sakrungpongsakul The opening of International Modern Trade Business Management (iMTM) bachelor program featured a grand ceremony and a symposium carrying the theme, “In an ever competitive international trade -you snooze, you lose.” iMTM is the first and only bachelor degree level program in modern trade in Thailand. H.E. Dr. Chaiyong shared his experience of dealing with international trade in Asia, Australia, and the United States. He suggested that the first step of doing international trade or business is comprehension of international trade law, customs, and the culture of counterparts. Mr. Matyawongse shared his experience when he was
posted in the United States as a trade counselor and his eight year stint in Myanmar. It was while based there that he discovered that there were many opportunities to do business in a newly developed country, such as Myanmar. Mr. Somboon offered advice and techniques on trade negotiation. This symposium was geared towards Thai investors who are keen invest in the CLMV countries (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam). The event was moderated by Ms. Natchanan Peeranarong, News Anchor, Thai Channel 3.

PIM and NUT join hands to deliver first symposium on new applications of computer engineering and information technology The participants of the one-day symposium were welcomed by host Dr. Pisit Charnkeitkong, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, PIM. PIM’s Executive Director, Dr. Paritud Bhandhubanyong formally opened the symposium noting how important it is to have regular knowledge exchanges with academic partners such as NUT. Six experts, Dr. Yoshiki Mikami, Dr. Izumi Suzuki, and Mr. Hitoshi Obata from NUT and PIM's Dr. Tunyawat Somjaitaweeporn, Dr. Weerawut
Thanhikam, and Mr. Chanakarn Kingkaew, were invited to present on topics ranging from impulse noise and speech processing application, development of languages communication application for use in modern trade stores, sampling smoothed local descriptors by creating a semi-local feature in a vector quantization process, and automatic detection of repressed anger from text messages.

Curtin Business School and PIM explore collaborative activities
Curtin University introduces one of Australia’s largest business schools, the Curtin Business School, to PIM and finds similarities with vision, scope, and delivery on 1 December 2015 at CP ALL’s Sivadol Building.

well as evidenced in MBA (Global) program’s regional linkages with some of the top business schools in the world. Further discussions covered possible student exchanges, tailor-made short courses, and collaborative activities relating to industry partnerships and internships.
Myanmar Institute of Finance seeks PIM as partner in developing short-term programs
Myanmar Institute of Finance (MIF)’s Mr. Tun Myat and Mr. Aung Thein Tun explore possible collaboration on delivering short-term programs with PIM, particularly in the field of food business management on 2 November 2015.

Bhutan Development Bank learns CP and PIM management and administration practices Nine delegates representative several business functions of Bhutan Development Bank were welcomed to the PIM campus by VP for Academic Affairs, Mr. Phornvit Phacharintanakul on 5 November 2015. Mr. Phornvit grounded the session by stating that at PIM, “we try to familiarize the students with real world situations. They are not studying merely just to excel in school.” Noting that PIM’s concept lies on developing people, he applauded the visitors for joining a refresher course that would be useful in their careers. Dr. Usanee Kulintornprasert, Director, Office of International Relations provided an overview of the Institute’s mandate to society. She introduced the two international programs that are currently on offer at PIM: the bachelor program on International Modern Trade
Management (iMTM) and the international masters in Business Administration (iMBA). Mr. Amrit Bdr Limbu of Bhutan Development Bank (BDB) also provided a brief on his organization noting its beginnings with a royal charter with the assistance of the Asian Development Bank. Mr. Amrit expressed that he was impressed in how CP invests in different sectors and hopes that BDB may also learn from the best practices of CP. The BDP group was accompanied by Mr. Mathew Kuruvilla from the Asian Institute of Technology.

PIM short courses spark interest with Canadian and Russian educators Five senior level educators affiliated with secondary schools and tertiary level facilities visit PIM and are introduced to PIM’s international outlook and willingness to accommodate more international students on 20 November 2015. The session sought to establish and explore possible collaborative activities with the representatives from the Eastern European University Association, Russia; and Canada’s Stanstead College, Pickering College, and Career Quest. Discussions centered on international student mobility particularly through short courses, partnerships with universities outside of Thailand, and career assessments.

Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) advances exchange student program with PIM
PIM’s esteemed partner, Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), expands student exchange program to include more candidates and increased priority areas during a session on 16 November 2015 at the PIM campus.

He added that SISU is eyeing four candidates to be deployed here at PIM next year as part of their internship program. Mr. Lu was also keen to involve PIM faculty in more activities with SISU, noting that tailor-made classes can be opened for those seeking professional development, in addition to the option of continuing post-graduate programs at SISU. Prof. Henry expressed that although NPUST is mostly know for its strength in agribusiness management, he hopes to increase cooperation with PIM particularly for current students to consider joining English programs delivered by his team. Mr. Gary noted that WCG is one of largest further and higher education college groups in the country with over 16,000 students enrolled in six colleges. More than 400 international students from 40 countries matriculate at WCG annually.

During the discussion, WCG and PIM identified some similar core programs delivered in both institutions such as automotive engineering, business studies, agriculture, and English language. Initial areas determined for further exploration included study group visits and English exposure programs in the WCG campus in the British midlands.

IDP Education and CP ALL - PIM executives IDP Education’s Regional Director for Southeast Asia, Ms. Varaporn Dhamcharee provided a brief background on IDP Education noting that the business model has evolved to include not only Australia but also New Zealand, the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. She added that IDP has three business units in Bangkok covering student placement, IELTS testing, and English language programs. She was joined by Ms. Wallapa Narunatvanich, Country Director; Mr. Pathunyu Yimsomruay, Marketing Manager; Ms. Nadchanan Dangkhom, Student Services Manager; and Mr. Juthaphat Sakkhajornphop, Business Development Executive.

Thailand Business and Cultural Exposure
The PIM Short Course Program on Thai Business and Cultural Exposure is specially developed for international students who are looking to expand their knowledge in cross-cultural management and international business, with an emphasis in Thailand. Core sessions are delivered in collaboration with recognized scholars, industry experts, and teaching specialists covering current issues in international business, particularly within the Thai business context. The program also includes special courses on basic Thai language skills, culinary arts, and traditional dance. Participation in this short course will anchor students’ understanding in Thai business and culture while building interpersonal skills that are essential in today’s dynamic and increasingly Asian-focused global economy. PIM strengthens Japanese ties with four universities International University Japan
IUJ and PIM faculty and administrators Dr. Li Wenkai, Dean and Professor of Operations Management, Graduate School of International Management, International University of Japan (IUJ) expressed that they are keen to outline areas for collaboration such as joint master degree program, research alliances particularly in the field of cloud computing and IT, business, and furthering case method activities, an approach which similar to what PIM integrates in the delivery of PIM’s iMBA course. He was accompanied by Dr. Zaw Zaw Aung. PIM was represented by a team led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pisit Charnkeitkong, Dean, Faculty of Engineering.

Endorsed by Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO), Utsunomiya University (UU) representatives held a brief introductory session for selected faculty, staff, and students on 14 December 2015 at PIM. Over 40 faculty, staff, and students participated in the session, and learned about the joint agricultural academic and research activities taking place in Japanese universities. Prof. Dr. Shinso Yokota, Director, Center for International Exchange was key speaker. He was joined by Ms. Yoshiko Abe from the International Student and Exchange Division and Ms. Yumiko Morikawa of the Education Affairs Division. Following the session, a roundtable discussion facilitated developing deeper linkages with PIM and UU. Topics pivoted around PIM’s internship model, student exchange, and short courses. Dr. Voravit Siripholvat and Dr. Chairat Burana attended, representing the Faculty of Innovative Agricultural Management.

Kansai University
Kansai University representatives with PIM team Prof. Hiroshi Tamura, Professor, International Affairs, Kansai University (KU) led a team of five faculty and technical staff to PIM to further discussion on an upcoming student exchange program on 15 December 2015. Building on the success of this year’s student exchange programs at PIM, KU representatives evaluated and proposed new mechanisms for next year’s short courses. The preliminary outline of the 2016 program will focus on teaching Japanese language and business exposure. Due to the popularity of the short course and triangle program hosted by PIM, Prof. Tamura was joined with his colleagues from the Faculty of Economics: Prof. Yoshinobu Zasu and Prof. Takeshi Nishimura, assisted by Ms. Keiko Kawakami Manager, International Affairs and Ms. Jitima Preechawong from KU Bangkok Office.
Ehime University
Ehime University with PIM faculty and students Dr. Murakami Kazuhiro and Mr. Takao Wakeya of Ehime University visited PIM to share opportunities available for PIM students who are interested in spending some time in Matsuyama province on 16 December 2015. Two faculties proved interesting for the PIM students since they offer English programs: Graduate School of Science and Engineering and the Graduate School of Agriculture. PIM is currently exploring an official partnership with Ehime University, particularly in student exchange programs.

Ateneo de Davao University visits PIM as part of Global Marketing Study Trip
Seventy-five students from Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU)’s School of Business and Governance, accompanied by five faculty members, visit PIM as part of their global marketing course on 11 November 2015. Panyapiwat Institute of Management (PIM) is the only higher learning institute that ADDU included in their study trip.
PIM welcomes Ateneo de Davao University PIM’s VP for Academic Affairs, Mr. Pornvit Patcharintanakul, greeted the visitors, welcoming the group back on their third visit. He emphasized that at PIM, students are not taught to pass their examinations but rather prepare them for life after their finals. He said, “The ability to adapt to different situations is important. Life starts at the end of the exam.” Dr. Jenner Y. Chan, Dean, School of Business and Governance, ADDU graciously thanked PIM for hosting the group and giving them the opportunity to learn practical knowledge outside the four corners of the university. The session began with a brief introduction about the CP Group, CP ALL, and PIM followed by a lecture on the Management Thinking of CP by Mr. Derek Thitsanuthit. Mr. Derek commended ADDU for incorporating international trips into their curriculum noting that the real-life experiences

will leave a lasting impression on their students. He delved into how speed and quality is a key core value for CP while oriental wisdom drives the group’s corporate culture. He emphasized on how humility has played a pivotal role in the Group’s leadership as endorsed by Chairman and CEO, Mr. Dhanin Chearavanont. The students actively participated in the session, seeking more information about integrity and leadership and how CP integrates its core values to the country, people, and the company.

Taiwan’s Dayeh University joins PIM’s short course on Thai business and culture A seven-day program featuring fundamental concepts about international business in Thailand was customized for a group of gifted students from Taiwanese seat of higher learning, Dayeh University (DU) in November 2015.

Six students from DU qualified to attend PIM’s signature short course program which began on 15 November 2015. They were accompanied by DU’s Mr. Tzu-Ching Lin, Chief Executive, Office of International & CrossStrait Affairs. Ms. Jill Lai, Education Attaché, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Thailand graced the opening program on 16 November 2016. The program featured five lectures, four cultural exposure trips, and three company visits. Lectures covered topics about Thailand, including a basic Thai

language course, cooking classes, and a workshop on Thai classical dance. Students were treated to a unique experience by accessing several international business operations based in Thailand such as CP RAM Innovation Center, Thai Glico Co., Ltd., and Ichitan Group Public Company Limited, a Thai company that produces green tea which boasts of having highest market share in the country. During the culminating activity, participants expressed their appreciation for PIM’s short course program, noting how excited they were to begin the next day since each activity was educational and also enjoyable.

Faculty members from the Faculty of Food Business Management, Faculty of Liberal Arts, Faculty from Innovative Agriculture Management, and Faculty of Agro-Industry joined the introductory session. Mr. Toshiyuki remarked how impressive PIM’s approach is to education, saying that developing human resources is key to high functioning business operations.

Moderating the session, Mr. Siam Chocksawangwong expressed his delight in having an opportunity to meet representatives from Myanmar CP Livestock who are handling various types of businesses such as animal feed, food business management, international trade, human resources, finance, and integration business. Possible joint activities may be developed through PIM’s Faculty of Agro-Industry (AGI), Faculty of Innovative Agricultural Management (IAM), and Faculty of Food Business Management. PIM’s activities in hospitality and tourism may also be explored for possible linkages as Myanmar’s tourism industry is at an incline.

Shell executives at the 7-Eleven demonstration store at Panyatara The group expressed interest in how the CP Group has grown into Thailand’s largest private conglomerate while retaining high quality not only in product lines, but also increasingly more important, in service delivery, logistics, marketing, and distribution. The visitors from Shell were led by Mr. Grant McGregor, GM Retail Thailand. This visit was organized in coordination with Panyatara, CP ALL’s training arm under the supervision of Ms. Pathama Aueathakarn, AVP. Shell has previously expressed working closely with Panyatara and PIM to develop human resources programs geared towards inhouse professional development and in parallel with Shell’s future expansion to other market sectors. Dr. Usanee Kulintornprasert provided an overview of PIM’s commitment to society by providing youth an
opportunity to study and work at the same time. She explained pertinent details on how the education model at PIM works, noting 100% employment and the high number of PIM students deciding to continue their career with the CP Group after graduation. PIM graduates can also demand 20% more remuneration compared to others graduating from similar courses because their internships qualify as real work experience. Mr. Grant concluded the visit by noting how important it was for his group to see PIM's faciltiies and learn the Institute's capabilities. He mentioned that he looks forward to collaborating with CP ALL as a whole, particularly in preparation for developing value-added products and services which will soon be available nationwide.

Leading mobile learning solution, Qooco, explores opportunities with PIM President of Sales explained. He continued to add that Qooco has helped many international brands increase their associates’ spoken language skills by up to 80% in just several months. Although Siam Daikin’s focus is in sales and service, Mr. Takayoshi added that he would like to link PIM with other companies, including Siam Daikin’s factory in Amata Nakorn Industrial Estate in Chonburi. Mr. Bundit noticed how PIM’s education model is very different from the styles associated with established universities in Thailand, rather he said, “PIM seems closely linked to the German system.” Dr. Tipawan Apiwanworarat, Dean, Faculty of Liberal Arts commended Mr. Bundit's observation noting that PIM takes the best practices from Germany, Japan, and Thailand which PIM as the DJT (Deutsch-Japannow promotes Thailand) educational model. Dr. Datchakorn Tancharoen, Vice Dean for the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, also noted that more than 20 teaching staff in PIM completed their post-graduate degrees in
Japan, himself being a graduate of the University of Tokyo. Sharing experiences in developing engagement models with several industry leaders, Mr. Mana Amanaton, General Manager, International Business Networking Management, CP ALL mentioned how PIM is eager to assist Siam Daikin in a number of ways to benefit their organization. Dr. Usanee Kulintornprasert, Director of the Office of International Relations emphasized that it was a challenging process to change the perception of work-based education, since the general public is not familiar with this concept, particularly in Thailand. Today, the result of PIM’s commitment to producing job-ready graduates is evident by statistics showing 100% employment, she concluded. Discussion topics revolved around possible ways to develop models of engagement with Siam Daikin, focusing on how to fully utilize the programs PIM currently offers in engineering, business Japanese, and marketing.
