Hi! My name is Popolarid, but you can call me Nina.

About

I have a thing for drawing everyday lo-fi snapshots mimicking social media posts that celebrate peaceful moments in mundane situations or people doing pin-up poses, like how people usually take selfies or showing their best outfit with strategic angles. I also like making visuals based on songs and sometimes mixing it up with typography. In my spare time, I enjoy watching game playthroughs and an Indomie enthusiast.

Laneige Lip Glowy Balm Ads One out of two of my entries in the advertising category for The AOI’s World Illustration Awards 2019. A series of Laneige Lip Glowy Balm advertising whose target market are youthful individuals who need a lip balm that could moisturize all day long without the need to reapply now and then. The lips are shaped like fruits to indicate the types of Laneige Lip Glowy Balm offers. 6

Based on their promo video to announce their new product, the video feels upbeat and girly but not too cutesy. From that, I feel like those Harajuku posters would fit the theme, with pastel colors and bold rounded fonts that pops in the visual. Since Korean beauty products start booming in western and southeast Asian countries, it seems plausible to include different shades of skin to promote inclusivity in the advertising, especially with the booming of Korean culture recently in many parts of the world. 8

Stray Kids: I Am Who? Album Ad Two out of two of my entries in the advertising category for The AOI’s World Illustration Awards 2019. An illustrated promotion for Stray Kids’ “I Am Who?” album. They’re keen on using glitch effects as a way to tell their lore that is set on a dystopian future, where a group of boys is at loss and in a search of their identity because of a strict system until a glitch came and lead the lost group by 10

breaking the system.

Stray Kids: I Am Who? Album Ad

The album is aimed for young adults who are searching for their identity and progressing at their own pace in a society where success is seen from how fast (agewise) and grand the achievements are. The running sequence is to show how people go at their own pace with the ups and downs in life, like how it shows how the figures dropped down step by step and 12

slowly stand up to run at a slower pace.

Lilili Yabbay Visualization Entry for iJungle Illustration Awards 2019. Based on SEVENTEEN’s song “Lilili Yabbay 13-month dance”, where they danced on the month of 13th dedicated to a divine being called Lilili Yabbay. I see this divine being as someone who controls all elements in life, in a place where everything comes back full circle as a cycle. She is the one who purges all the things that don’t serve the world and starts the first month again from a blank slate.

Lilili Yabbay Visualization

I want the general feel of the visual looks like vintage tarot cards, as tarot cards have always carried a mystical feel around it, which is fitting for the song that praises a divine being. Inspired by Waite-Raider tarot deck, which is the most used deck for people who wants to get into reading tarot cards. Aside from the vintage look, WaiteRaider has something more into than just a deck of cards if a lot of people recommend it from time to time for people who want to learn tarot, which adds the mystical point 16

for this deck.

Lilili Yabbay Visualization

At first, I want to show that she controls time through the cycle of the moon, which coincidentally aligned with the lyrics of how they‘re looking at the moon and prays for her arrival. I figured that her pose should be more dynamic since she’s the one who sets the thing in motion, and the overall visual would look less boring.

17

Lilili Yabbay Visualization

This part of the illustration intends to show both moon and sun existing at the same time. Being the one who controls all elements in life, like animals and plants, sun and moon, or heat and cold. I tried to show how it all fuse into one to show that Lilili Yabbay has it all under her control. 18

The song praised Lilili Yabbay as if she’s a beautiful divine being, and I feel like drawing her face wouldn’t do justice with the song since beauty is subjective, so I resort to her wearing a mask that shaped like fire to complement her water dress to show that she, again, control all element in life from air to water and everything in between.

A Minute Jukebox CD Cover Visual based from 1-minute music called “A Minute Jukebox”. It is noted by the composer that he’s feeling angry while he’s composing the song. The challenge is how to visualize anger without using the obvious theme such as fire, red, or chaos in the CD cover.

20

A Minute Jukebox CD Cover

At first, I’m still sticking to the warm color palette since anger means defending one’s views with passion and at some point will make impulsive decisions to save one’s pride. However, anger is more like a mixture of emotions that someone can’t let out, resulting in frustration and anger, so I’m trying to translate that into more colorful visuals.

22

The challenge when I’m making the visuals is how to manipulate the typography so it’s as colorful as the image, but not overpowering it as the image already takes so much space. Some attempts and small revisions were made before I settle for the final design.

Visual Narrative: Let Go A storybook based on the incident Bandung Lautan Api. The narrative focuses on a victim that tries to remember what happened to them, their family and their village, only to find out they’re in limbo and their family is already long gone. The narrative ends with them staying in their limbo state with unresolved business as they’re waiting for their family and doesn’t accept their death and move on. Link: 24

Visual Narrative: Let Go

For this narrative, I want to give the Indonesian feel through the art style, starting with the character design. The visual approach is different than my usual art style to match with the feel of the story which plays a big part in making Indonesia as a country. The design for the characters is loosely based on wayang golek while taking some attributes from wayang kulit, since wayang golek doesn’t show the anatomy for the legs. To show the difference that the character is alive or dead is by showing their legs, as it always said that spirits don’t have visible legs. 26

Visual Narrative: Let Go

Aside from showing whether the character is alive or not is shown on the color palette of the surroundings; warm color palette to show that the main character is alive and cold to monotone colors when they’re in a limbo state. Throughout the narrative, the colors gradually turn darker and colder and gloomier as the reader is following the main character’s journey when they’re alive to seconds before their death. 27

Epos Typography Typography based on attributes of Indonesian shadow puppet and batik patterns. I love seeing modern uptake inspired by Indonesian cultures and visuals has always and always wanting to be apart of one, making this typography one of my attempts to fuse Indonesian culture with modern trends.

Epos Typography

The process of making the typography is mostly using traditional media since some shadow puppet attributes are stacked on top of each other. Using traditional media, mostly pencil and black marker, is more efficient to get the shading right and add more depth to the illustration.
