† PRAYER OF CONFESSION Rev. Donald Potter

Grace-filled God, we confess that we pursue our own needs, neglecting the needs of others. We pursue our own desires, while slowly destroying the gifts of your creation. We deflect the call to ministry, ignoring the cries of those in need. We are drawn to proclaim the gospel, yet live it out only at our convenience. Have mercy on us, O God. Open our eyes to the truth of the gospel that, whatever the time or wherever we are, we may fully embody your love and justice for all the world.

ANTHEM I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes Michael Head

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth, my help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: He that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is thy keeper: The Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thee shall preserve thee from all evil: He shall preserve thy soul, preserve thy soul, the Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore, for evermore.

† AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

ANTHEM Teach Me, O Lord Philip W. Stopford

Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end, keep it unto the end. Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end, keep it unto the end. Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall keep it with my whole heart, with my whole heart. Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein is my desire, my desire. Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness. O turn away mine eyes lest they behold vanity, and quicken me in thy way, and quicken me in thy way. O stablish thy word, thy word in thy servant, that I may fear thee, may fear thee, may fear thee. Amen.

Don Potter, born in Canton, OH, is a graduate of Spring Arbor College (MI) and Princeton Theological Seminary (NJ). Ordained in 1976 he has served Presbyterian congregations in Pennsylvania--Kittanning, Mechanicsburg, and Middletown. He retired at the end of 2015 and resides at Presbyterian Senior Living in Dillsburg. For the past five years he has served as Pastor of Visitation at Camp Hill Presbyterian Church and has done extensive pulpit supply throughout the Presbytery of Carlisle.

The Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan is an American tradition begun in 1941 by the Rev. Dr. Peter Marshall, “A Man Called Peter.” Marshall, a Scottish immigrant, held a service at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, D. C. “… to raise funds for British War Relief.” It was held to raise funds for “a mobile kitchen, to feed the victims of bombings” in Britain during World War II and was not called a “Kirkin’.” In his 1941 sermon Marshall said that during “the miracle of Dunkirk” in World War I, “… when the people of Great Britain were told of the danger, they did the only thing they knew to do, they went to their churches and prayed.” That simple phrase may well be where the phrase, “The Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan” came from. Its simplest meaning is gathering, or kirking, into the “kirk” or “church.” It could also have roots in Marshall’s awareness of an ancient Scottish service from which a modern ceremony (1999) known as “The Kirking of the Scottish Parliament,” is derived.

The American service quickly became an annual event and the first use of “The Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan” was not as a sermon title, but as the name of the service in 1943. Several years after Marshall’s death in 1949 the Kirkin’ moved from Presbyterian churches to the Washington National Cathedral where it has been held annually, except during the pandemic, ever since. The National Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan resumed in 2022 and for the first time was streamed live and recorded.

The “blessing of the tartans,” now often a very visible part of the service, was unknown to Marshall and grew informally after his death. His use of the word “tartan” singular suggests that he meant the Kirkin’ of the Scottish people, “the Tartan,” not the fabric tartans (plural) which represent them.

Other Scottish societies and groups, including the Scottish Society of Central Pennsylvania, both in the U. S. and in Canada (but not Scotland!) have made the Kirkin’ tradition their own.
