After a year of hard work, we’ve reached our 12th issue. The journey has been long and at some points, even heart breaking, but we did it. This isn’t just a celebration of the one year, it’s a look back at how far we’ve come. If you haven’t seen our one yer video, please check out our Facebook page videos and have a peek. One of the best things so far is the amazing people I’ve met in the journey. Business acquaintances that have become friends, and friends that have become business acquaintances. It’s all one big circle.
Follow Us!
This issue in particular is one of our Wedding Issues and more. You’re going to see predominantly wedding stuff, but little flashes of our favorite styles as well. We’ll be looking at the new spring line for East Coast Lifestyle Clothing, as well as local designer Michelle Noseworthy. We’re also pleased to say that the taping of our show is underway, just waiting for it to be properly edited. Can’t wait to show everyone! Be prepared, my dear readers, because PinkBlitz is going to be taking another turn for the better! In the next couple months you are going to see us really step up our game. We’re very excited to be taking these steps to a very bright future. Great connections, great friends made, we’re rockin’ it! Stay beautiful xo

PinkBlitz Must Do’s Spring has arrived! Unfortunately, in Canada we seem to have a Stage 6: Clinger Winter on our hands. Here’s some ways to make it seem like spring even if there’s sill an ice problem outside: 1. Buy some plants for inside your home. Nothing like a shopping spree to get you ready for Spring/Summer! Hit all your favorite stores and get your clothing in check! 3. It’s the perfect time of year to take a vacation. Untraditional Wedding Gowns By Kayley Reed

Every bride wants her wedding day to be special, but some are more daring than others. Weddings are getting generally more progressive, and dress styles are following suit. You don’t have to be outrageously bold to choose an unforgettable, untraditional dress. It’s your wedding day after all, so why not wear something that reflects your personality and style? If you’re one of those brides-to-be who are looking for something unique, read on! If you’re a gal who fancies sticking with tradition, these dresses might just change your mind. A Touch of Gold The gold accented wedding dress has become a huge hit since being spotted on Gossip Girl’s finale by Serena Van Der Woodsen. You know that if the Upper East Side’s “It Girl” is wearing it, there’s something special about it! The exact dress is by Georges Chakra, but some similarly inspired styles have appeared such as the gold-flecked gown by Monique Lhuillier. Black is the New White The Spring 2014 runway saw this trend lead by Vera Wang, whose collection featured almost exclusively black accented wedding dresses. Whether it’s floral accents, belts, or gloves, black is a hot twist for brides looking for uniqueness. Birds of a Feather Forget ruffles and tulle, the new trendy texture is feathers. This is a fun and flirty new look that isn’t as visually dramatic as other untraditional dresses. The feathers are just eye-catching enough to make viewers turn heads and look twice, but not so bold to make your grandmother question your dress choice! Pale Ombré Pastels are taking over Spring 2014 fashion, including wedding gowns. Rose and Cinderella blue have become common dress options, but now ombré is a new unforgettable style. The beauty of the pale ombré is that it gives a subtle unexpected splash of colour, while keeping the traditional white.

Wedding Dress Nightmare! Photo by: Janna Lounsbury
Alright ladies! Wedding season is just around the corner and it’s time for you to buy your perfect dress. You want to stand out and have all eyes on that gown. But you want all eyes to be on you for a good reason. Let me give you a few examples of things you should absolutely avoid at your wedding. Firstly, I know Duck Dynasty is huge right now and everyone just seems to love camo, but seriously, not at a wedding. Maybe have hints of reflective orange, if you really want it in your décor or flowers, but not on you or your groom. Recently, the infamous Honey Boo Boo’s mother, June, got married. The dress was a short sleeve, floor-length gown in camo with a construction/hunting orange sash and underskirt. Now, if you don’t consider that a nightmare, then I don’t know what is. Another thing you need to make sure is that your dress fits you. Mainly, you want it to fit in the boob department. You want to make sure the dress is snug and holds the up during your ceremony and as you party into the night. Don’t be one of those girls who keeps pulling up their dress every 5 minutes. Or worst, have the entire wedding party see your lady lumps. I know some of you may not want to wear a bra but it will save you from this problem. You can find bras that are strapless, backless, plunge low. There’s one out there to work with your dress. Finally, simple is always in. You don’t need a two mile long train or something over the top like My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. No need for thousands and thousands of dollars’ worth of diamonds and crystals covering every inch of your body. Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life. You’re gonna want to look back at your pictures and not ask yourself: “What the heck was I thinking?”. Keep it classy ladies!

Amy simply wasn’t cut out for traditional schooling and traditional jobs, she was born with a love for all things fashion. Being from a small town, her big city dreams needed to become her reality. She knew after watching copious hours of The Hills on MTV, she couldn’t do anything else but pursue a career in the fashion industry as a stylist. Wedding Esthetic Checklist By Phoebe Hicks
Preparing for your wedding is one thing, with decor, invitations, location and all that jazz, preparing yourself for the wedding is another. Getting down to the nitty-gritty last kinks and details revolve, for the most part, you; the bride. Down to the month before the vows are set in stone, 3-4 weeks before the big day and the first point on your personal checklist. Hair and makeup trials: testing styles for the actual event. This gives the bride the chance to play and fool around a bit for the final look, it’s a very good idea to take this step for practice, to get a feel of what results will be and make a decision. Being aware of and excited for your real prep day can calm nerves and give the bride a nice relief and confidence amongst the nerves. Down to 2 weeks! Time to touch up- get your teeth whitened, as well as get your hair coloured and trimmed if needed—or wanted. Proceeding with these things two weeks prior gives the bride wiggle room to get anything fixed. The time period is perfect to adjust or settle in with colour or such, while being fresh and giving the next bit of time to get other priorities done. 30 34
During the week before treat yourself, go to the local salon and spa for a message, facial, manicure and pedicure. Relax, freshen up and get pretty nails for the day that’s vastly approaching. Preparation takes time so, when it comes to this step it’s one that should begin a few months before the wedding, but 4-6 days before your scheduled date wax, wax, wax! Eyebrows, legs, bikini, Brazilian- whatever is your preference—or his. THE NIGHT BEFORE, perhaps with your main girls; do a facial mask, take a bubble bath and sleep! The last freshen up and calmer downer, very important, put your body and mind into a giddy but relaxed and prepared state. At last, at last, it’s THE DAY! After a good night’s sleep have a filling, but small breakfast so you aren’t bloated but you aren’t hungry you get to finally lead into what’s left. Hair, makeup and suit up! You’ve fulfilled the personal bride’s checklist; you had a month to get ready, it’s your day, you did it all right and you look fabulous and stunning and everyone’s breath will be taken away.

Dear John, I’m newly single and it’s been literally 10 years since I’ve had to enter the dating scene. It’s so different from what it used to be, how should I go about this? Sincerely, Lost in Love Dear Lost, It definitely is a different dating scene than it was 10 years ago. Back then, you could go to a bar or meet someone at work, or other various ways of meeting a guy. Now, everything is computerized, and let’s face it. Unless you were 10 when you met him, you are probably too old for the club scene now. So here’s where it gets good. Where can you meet someone? A lot of people try online dating, with websites like Plenty of Fish. In my humble opinion, websites like that aren’t necessarily for serious buyers so to speak. Most of the guys on there are seriously only looking for one thing. One thing you should know from my own perspective, guys aren’t really that different from what they were 10 years ago. We still like sports, food, sex, and when people do nice things for us… simple as that. We don’t like girls who try too hard, and we want something real but never know how to ask for it. But, one thing I recommend is meeting people through other friends. Some of the best dating adventures happen when your friends try to hook you up with one of their friends. You aren’t going to find someone who is worth it, easy. He’ll come along when you least expect it, but when he does you will know. He’s who you were waiting for all along. Give it time, it’ll happen! Or, try online dating. You’re choice! Just be sure to love being with yourself first, otherwise how can you love being with someone else? 50

Many believe that the marriage keeps on going as strong and beautiful, but other believe that the huge amount of debt caused by the wedding will send shock ways into the relationship. After spending days, or hopefully weeks in a tropical or romantic destination, most are secluded from the troubles that are piling up back home. But when the time comes, to back up and head back to the real world, most couples tend to do fairly well. Even with the huge dollar signs next to credit cards or bank loans, the beautiful humming on a happy couple will always beat out the horrible clunking of bills and money troubles. What most people tend to forget is that even when there are no problems in a relationship, people will always fight over money, but it’s the stronger ones; the ones meant to be together, that will find their ways back to bed that night sleeping soundly next to each other without any ill feelings. So what IS next after the honeymoon for a happy couple? Longevity.

Wedding myths BY: NATASHA DORE
There are a few wedding myths that even the most ethical girl will follow. Ones such as seeing the bride in her gown before the wedding, rain on the wedding day, and wearing white on the wedding day. Actually, there are many more myths out there, and most of them are much more weird than the usually ones we hear. In Greece it is believed that if you place a sugar cube inside your glove it will sweeten the union. Moroccan woman bathe in milk in order to purify themselves for their wedding day. Egyptians pinch the bride on her wedding day. Weirdest yet, the English believe that a spider found in the wedding gown means good luck to the happy couple. Wedding myths are just that, myths, if something goes wrong on your wedding day, or if you’re extremely afraid of spiders, then don’t fret, if you found the right person for you, it will work out. Make your own good fortune.

Everywhere we go these days it seems we are surrounded by media of some sort. The internet, Facebook, Twitter, television, radio, it’s everywhere. Here is a story I think many can benefit from. I myself have grown up watching media and technology advance over the years and it’s amazing how far we’ve come in my 25 years. I was rarely seen without a boom box in my hand. I always dreamt of one day being famous. I grew up and went to college for Radio & T.V with high hopes for a wonderful, shiny-looking industry. I always wanted people to know my name, be excited when they saw me walk into the room, and most importantly, to make a positive impact on people’s lives. I worked in radio for 4 years before being unceremoniously laid off. I felt defeated, betrayed. Like nothing I put my heart and soul into for 4 years mattered to anyone. I drove home from the radio station for the last time, bawling my eyes out. I had just lost my dream job for no legitimate reason. I thought my life was over. When I got home, I announced to the community via social media that I would no longer be a radio announcer in my home town, which I love. What happened next was something I never expected. The community reached out to me! People who I had never met or even spoken to before were messaging me nonstop on Facebook and Twitter with kind words, support and love. I couldn’t believe it. My shattered faith in humanity had been restored by complete strangers who listened to my voice over the airwaves religiously and I wasn’t even aware of it. I never realized the impact I had on so many people in Moncton and it was totally overwhelming. I read stories fans sent me about how me talking on the radio about my experience with bullying helped them, gave them the courage to tell their story after years of hiding, and how I gave people hope when they thought they had none. It made me realize just when you think humanity has lost its way, there are more people than you think out there who will bring you up when you’re down, and they can come from the most unexpected places. No matter what you’ve lost, there’s always something bigger and better to gain.

I Survived A Jillian Michaels Workout! By: TAMMY MALLEY Brock health science student, former food law consultant, gym addict and health nut. Can cook a carrot 101 ways while wondering the origin of growth of said carrot. It’s no secret that I’m a gym rat. I love the gym. I’m in a relationship with the gym. I am a GoodLife member, and I love everything about them. They have awesome classes, good selection of club locations, and lots of cardio and weight gear. And my favourite part: they have women’s only gyms that are warm and welcoming. Since joining in Jan 2012, I’ve lost 100lbs and found a passion. I do nothing in moderation so when I find something I like, I go all out. One of the things I love about GoodLife is that they have some sort of relationship/affiliation with Jillian Michaels. GoodLife holds BodyShred classes with certified Shred instructors, and it’s an insane 30 minute workout that does cardio, strength, and abs.
And then the day came! Finally! I can meet Jillian Michaels and do the BodyShred class led by her! I went to the gym early, and almost wasn’t able to attend. The class was held in the basement of the massive gym—I’ve never been to this one before—and in order to get to the basement, you had to take an escalator.
When GoodLife had a contest to enter to win the chance to do a BodyShred class taught my Jillian Michaels herself, I jumped at the chance to enter. I filled out the ballot online, marked what my favourite BodyShred move is, and submitted it. A few weeks later, I received an e-mail that I won a spot in the Toronto BodyShred class at 11:30am on March 4th.
There were no stairs, no elevator. Unfortunately for me, I have a crippling fear of escalators. I don’t know why, but they terrify me and I can’t use them. I asked the people at the front desk if they could stop the escalator for me to get down the stairs, and they were nice enough to accommodate me—of course, after giggling a little at my dilemma.
I was ecstatic! I am a big fan of her and follow Biggest Loser and regularly look at her sites for tips on healthy living. I had to confirm my spot (I did that within seconds of receiving the e-mail!) and then asked my employer for the time off, which she happily gave me. And now, I had to wait a week for the class...
Outside waiting for the class to start, I met a nice girl there who was just as excited and anxious as I was. We chatted and decided we would pick spots beside each other once in the studio so we could suffer together. There were security guards everywhere, which I wasn’t expecting. We had to wait a while for the class to get set up, and then finally we were allowed in the studio.
During that week prior, I kept feeling anxious every time I thought about it. I was so concerned that I would be the biggest person in the class, or the slowest person, or the most lost. I decided to actually go try a BodyShred class, since I never did it before. 62
I found a women’s only club in the city I work in that had a BodyShred class on the schedule and I ventured out to it. I was shocked to see how hard it was! I can do two hours of cardio classes back-to-back and survive it easily, but the BodyShred was insane! I was so sore, and I went home and crawled in bed and fell asleep in minutes. It was exhausting! This made my anxiety much, much worse.
Once in the studio, we grabbed our equipment and found our spots. I was centre to the stage, two rows back. There was a brief info from her helper who would demo the moves with her, and then out comes
She wasn’t lying. It WAS torture. I have very severe asthma and a mild heart murmur, so I keep a heart rate monitor strapped on my chest and my inhalers are always within arm’s reach. At one point during the class I looked at my monitor and it said my heart rate was 195 beats per minute. I backed off a little, thinking if I take it slow for a set that it’d come back down. Wrong! It shot up over 200 beats per minute so I grabbed my inhaler and took several hauls of it. Heart rate rapidly went down, body returned back to normal, time to get back into it! There’s a puddle of sweat at my feet, my body is aching, I want this to be over! Jillian announces we’re getting towards the end of the workout and have just one circuit left. During the class she’s been walking around giving encouragement and constructive criticism to people in the class—well, that’s a nice way of saying she was yelling at us to work harder. We’re towards the end, and we have to do 30 seconds of a high knee run. My body isn’t happy with me so I’m slowing down a little, but then I see Jillian walking over by me. I try to get my knees up higher but my body says no. Jillian comes over to me, stands in front of me, puts her arm up to my chest level and yells “GETS YOUR KNEES UP NOW.” Magically my knees went up higher! The mind can say quit before the body is ready to give up.
my idol onto the stage! To say I was star struck would be an understatement. This is a woman I highly respect and I adore, and here I was about to have her as my instructor. What an opportunity! I took pictures and videos while she demonstrated the moves we’d be doing. She warned us all that once the workout starts, all videos and cameras and phones go away or she’ll be unhappy. Demonstration took almost 10 minutes then the workout started. The first few minutes are just warmup but the warm-up is very intense. Lots of jumping jacks were involved. Then we moved into the harder parts. Every move is only 30 seconds long and then we switch to a new move, but, as Jillian said in the intro, “it’s 30 seconds of torture.”
Finally, it’s cool-down time! Hooray, I survived! So did the girl that I befriended before the class started. I look over at her and we laugh a little and point out each other’s sweatiness. My sweat puddle grew quite a bit. My hair was drenched, my pants and shirt was drenched, I looked terrible but I felt fantastic! I got to work-out with someone I deeply admire, and who many others clearly admire given the number of likes her Facebook page has. I got to experience something very few have the opportunity to do, and I am so thankful I was able to do it. 2 years and 100lbs ago, I would never have thought that working out with a celebrity trainer would be something I’d love to do. Being able to complete the BodyShred class with Jillian Michaels has given me even more drive and motivation to do my best at the gym.

Calming the Wedding Jitters By: Rachel Richard To say you might be nervous during one of the most important days of your life is an understatement. This reaction is completely normal, and don’t let anyone tell you any differently. It is likely you felt the same nervous excitement as you walked on a stage to collect your high school diploma, or when you sat your driving test. Unfortunately, it is to be expected no matter how prepared or excited you may be. While I caution you to listen to your instincts, don’t delude yourself into second-guessing your decisions because of a case of the nerves. This type of anxiety is not unique to weddings. Before the ceremony, it’s important to distinguish any nervousness you might feel from doubt. Doubt is a powerful emotion, and an even greater premonition for things to come. Just as you would not ignore a medical condition, you should never ignore any feeling of doubt either. Marriage should not be used as a solution to doubt; the problems you had before the wedding ceremony will not be magically fixed when the ceremony is over. Doubt should not be a cause for concern or cancellation, but it should be addressed before the wedding. Do not stay silent, talk about your concerns and try to work through them before walking down the aisle. Both the ceremony and the relationship will benefit from it. Just as you should deal with doubt before the ceremony, anxiety can be alleviated too. If you choose not to deal with it, I promise you it will not go away on it’s own. We have compiled some methods and practical tips to help you deal with anxiety whenever you feel it, especially on your wedding day and on the days leading up to the big event. Calm your nerves: Focus on your breath by way of yoga or meditation as these are known to be both emotionally and physically calming mechanisms. Control your adrenaline by focusing your stomach muscles on your breathing. If you need to, step away from the festivities for a few moment to spend by yourself. Applying pressure on the inside of your wrist where lies a pressure point can help you.
Positivity: Believe in the power of optimism! Above all else, this is a day of celebration with your betrothed and your loved ones who want to share this day with you. Give in to their love and attention and let yourself be pampered. Be happy and enjoy the day to the fullest. Sleep: Get plenty of sleep before the big day so you feel refreshed in the morning. Don’t stay up until the early hours of the morning on the day before making the last decisions. On your wedding day, your role is no longer the one of wedding planner, but that of the bride. Morning Ritual: Keep your morning as normal as possible. Make sure to eat a good breakfast even if you are not hungry. Fill your stomach to settle your nerves, Try watching the news or indulging in your daily morning ritual to deal with an extraordinary day as ordinarily as possible. Be Punctual: The day will pass by quickly so it is not the time to procrastinate or panic. Make a time plan beforehand and allocate some extra time between tasks to allow for any timely disruptions to the schedule. If you are able to do so, try to be ready an hour before the ceremony (two hours for the bridesmaids). Emergency Preparation: I do not mean to alarm you but at some point, it is likely something will go wrong. It is impossible to prevent all eventualities, but it is possible to be well prepared for them. Gather some emergency supplies in case you need them. These can include hairspray, safety pins, bobby pins, toothbrush, hairstyling tools, mini sewing kit, pain relievers, eye drops, q-tips, clear nail polish, makeup remover, tampons, spot remover, tissues, tweezers, nail file, mirror, and gum. Don’t forget to keep a list of emergency contacts and their telephone numbers so you are able to contact them if the need be. This might be just some sentimental hogwash, but try to enjoy your day. This important milestone will only come once (hopefully!) in your life. Do not pay attention to the problems that may arise, focus instead on the joy of the moment. If all else fails, a healthy glass of champagne never hurt anyone.

Staying Fresh On the Big Day

Months upon months go into planning for one special day: your wedding day. Despite the limited amount of waking hours in a day, you will manage to cram a lot of action between the time you open your eyes until you are whisked off to your honeymoon. While you will be energized by the excitement of the festivities, they will take a toll on you as the hours roll by. From the wedding ceremony to the reception, you have to maintain your vigour and freshness throughout the day. That is difficult to pull off in sweatpants and sneakers, let alone under a mountain of tulle in four-inch heels. Here are a few tips and tricks to have on hand to keep you flawless until the end in both appearance and spirit: 1. Comfortable Shoes: If you are insistent on purchasing that gorgeous pair of four-inch stiletto heels, consider bringing along a more comfortable pair of heels or flats for the reception. I am sure you would not want a pair of blistered feet to stop you from dancing the night away with your loved ones. Be sure to break in any new pairs of shoes weeks in advance of the ceremony. To do so, try putting on a pair of wool socks and using a blowdryer to soften and stretch the shoe leather for a more comfortable fit. 2. A Fitting Dress: I know those corseted gowns can look beautiful, but they are not ideal if you are planning on hitting the dance floor during the wedding reception. Be sure to move around the store in your dress before making the purchase to get a feel it. If you do not think you will be comfortable, consider changing into a new outfit for the reception such as a formal dress or your getaway outfit. 3.
water at hand at all times to stay fresh throughout the day. The water will help your mind stay alert and keep you energized. If you feel like drinking wine and champagne during the reception, try alternating each glass with water to reduce the effects of alcohol on your system. 4. Check Your Makeup: Even if you have your makeup professionally applied, you should always keep some beauty essential with you. As the day wears on, so will your makeup. Your blush and your lipstick will most likely be the first ones to fade. Keep these items in your clutch for easy access and application during the reception. If your makeup is applied by a professional makeup artist before the wedding ceremony, ask for a sample of the products used or request that she uses your own makeup products. Don’t forget some waterproof mascara! 5. Emergency Items: We have included a comprehensive list of emergency items you might need throughout the day in another piece in this issue (see: Calming the Wedding Jitters). The most important articles you will need are the following: a mirror to check on your makeup so you won’t have to rely on your girlfriends, some pain relievers to prevent possible headaches or aching limbs, a nail file to keep your manicure intact, clear nail polish to fix a run in your stocking or an extra pair of pantyhose, and a stain removal pen for obvious reasons (I cannot be the only clumsy one here). It is impossible to prevent all eventualities, but it is important to be prepared for them. Do not forget all the hard work you have put into the organization of this special day. The months that precede the wedding day are for its preparation, the day itself is for your enjoyment. You will have plenty of time to rest after your wedding day. Or not.

Your Perfect Dress BY RACHEL RICHARD
A bride’s beauty cannot be measured with a scale. And neither can her happiness. When you’re standing at the altar, don’t get married to society’s opinion of the ideal bride, but yourself and your partner’s. The importance placed upon a woman’s physical appearance as a measure of her worth as a human being is quadrupled when she becomes a bride, so be careful! It seems the beauty industry and the wedding industry have teamed up to body shame women into becoming their idea of the perfect bride, at a hefty price. As if wedding planning was not a stressful and expensive affair enough already. The initial euphoria felt at the time of the engagement is quickly replaced with a great deal of stress: choosing a location for the wedding, selecting the food, picking the flowers, inviting the guests, and worst of all, finding the wedding dress. As a young girl, I was never enamoured with visions of white, nor do I have pictures of my dream dress tacked on a board in my bedroom. However, I realize I am in the minority. Most women have been envisioning their wedding day ever since they first put on a white towel on their heads while pretending to walk down the aisle in their living room. As young girls grow up, they quickly realize the importance is not placed upon how THEY feel in their wedding dress, but how SOCIETY perceives them. These days, it seems women are not sufficiently toned, thin or fit to walk down the aisle. It is possible we have started to mistake the wedding aisle for the catwalk. Unsurprisingly, a 2007 Cornell University study found that 70 percent of 272 engaged women wanted to lose 68 76
an average of 20 pounds. That desperation felt to lose weight in preparation for that one special day — not in concern for their health — often leads them to resort to crash diets. According to Dr. Sacker, a professor at NYU Medical Centre and an eating disorder specialist, 10 percent of women develop a lasting disorder as a result of these extreme diets before their wedding. In the context weddings, weight loss is an industry almost exclusively reserved for women. I do not know about you, but I do not remember the last time I heard a man anguishing about fitting into his tuxedo. Do not let these kinds of societal expectations put undue stress on you. Am I saying you should not lose weight before your wedding? Not at all. If you’d like to lose a few found to reach a healthy weight, go for it! However, you should not put your body through a rigorous diet in the hopes of obtaining that « perfect » dress for that one day, that one photograph. Introducing a nutritional diet and decent amount of physical activity to your daily can greatly benefit your health, but you should expect long-term gradual results, not drastic ones within a short period of time. And by all means, don’t purchase a small dress in the hopes of motivating you to lose weight. You will more likely end up by gaining five pounds due to the anxiety it will create. Trust me, if your partner loved you before your engagement, he or she will love you even if you don’t lose those last pesky ten pounds. A happy bride is a beautiful bride, whether or not she’s hiding two pairs of Spanx underneath her wedding dress.
