Welcome to Pinta NY 2013! BY DIEGO COSTA PEUSER Executive Director & CEO Pinta NY.

In this new edition of PINTA NY we are featuring an innovative curatorial format to showcase four new platforms, organized by a team of international renowned curators. The curated exhibitions include a section for modern art galleries selected by Cecilia Fajardo-Hill, a contemporary art section curated by US Director Ian Cofre; Emerge, curated by José Roca; Video, curated by Octavio Zaya; Centro, curated by Omar LópezChahoud, and Next, a section devoted to young galleries. Visitors will also be able to enjoy the series of Conversations organized by Gabriela Rangel and Miguel A. López, to be held at the Pinta Forum, and the new section, Pinta Editions, in which Latin American museums and foundations will present their publications of the past two years. We believe that a joint effort and working together for a common purpose are a foundation for success and for achieving great results, and we are determined to build bridges to and from Latin America, so that art from the region may continue to position itself globally. The commitment and trust of the participating galleries have been priceless for us in our endeavor to establish a platform for the diffusion of art. Our aim is to offer visitors a comprehensive program that fosters an interaction network between them, the artists from Latin America, Spain and Portugal, art institutions in general and other individuals and organizations related to the international art world. A very special ‘thank you’ to our sponsors, whose generous support makes Pinta possible. I hope this seventh edition of the fair will be a fantastic experience for all our visitors! PINTA | 5

The Drawing Center

BY BRETT LITTMAN Director del Drawing Center, NY.

The Drawing Center is honored to collaborate with PINTA NY 2013 by presenting the work of Argentinian artist Matias Duville on the cover of this catalog, in a booth at the fair, and through the launch of the book Alaska, which we are publishing in November 2013. The Drawing Center has always had a close connection to Latin American drawing and in the past year we have presented the work of Guillermo Kuitca, Jose Antonio Suarez Londono, and Ishmael Randall Weeks in our museum. Claire Gilman, our curator, and I feel strongly that some of the most interesting drawings being made in the world today are coming out of Latin America. Over the past two years, we both have spent time in Colombia, Argentina, and Brazil visiting collections and museums and engaging in dialogue with artists and art historians about historical and recent trends in drawings and plan to continue to engage with and exhibit artists’ works from these countries (and others) over the next several years at The Drawing Center.

Modern

Modern Latin American art through the development and diversification of scholarship, exhibitions and the art market in recent years, has become broader to include artists and tendencies that until not so long ago were relatively unknown. 20th century art history has become richer with the incorporation of new protagonists from Latin America. The Modern Section for PINTA New York 2013 reflects the expansion of a more diversified modern field in the areas of Abstraction, not only Geometric, but Conceptual and Informal, in artists such as: Regina Aprijaskis, Ivan Contreras Brunet, Eduardo Costa, Jorge Eduardo Eielson, Ana Mercedes Hoyos, Gert Leufert, Mercedes Pardo; Conceptual Art in multidisciplinary formats found in Diego Barboza, Leonora de Barros, Delia Cancela, Carlos Castillo, Paz Errasuriz, Marie Orensanz, Clemente Padín, Margarita Paksa, Claudio Perna, Pedro Terán, Yeguas del Apocalipsis and Yeni & Nan; and more established artists such as Antonio Asís, Jesús Rafael Soto and the Escuela del Sur, featuring prominently José Gurvich. The Modern section at PINTA will introduce works by artists that are fresh to the art market, and a larger number of women artists, this way playing a key role both in the expansion of the Latin American art market, and in the fostering of the collections of the future. For ten years, he managed the arts program of the Banco de la República in Bogota. He co-curated the first San Juan Poly/Graphic Triennial in San Juan, Puerto Rico (2004), the 27th Bienal de São Paulo, Brazil (2006) and the Encuentro de Medellín MDE07 (2007), and was the Artistic Director of Philagrafika 2010, Philadelphia’s international Triennial celebrating print in contemporary art. Emerge

Pinta Emerge will be curated by Jose Roca (Bogota/London), who will select and invite ten emerging artists under the age of forty (40), whose individual presentations will give the audience an in-depth look into their current work and practices. Curated by Jose Roca Modern Ruin Ruins used to be a remote past and were evoked with nostalgia. But nowadays ancient ruins coexist with those of Modernity, a recent era that has already produced its own heap of rubble: traces of possibilities that never made it past their potentialities. What once was future, today is only the witness of its failure. Utopia can be defined as something that is not possible within the circumstances of its time: always in a state of becoming, it is enunciated but never materialized. The Modern project left us the ruins of political models that, defeated, become part of the sedimentary layers of History. The projects presented here reflect on the spoils of our most recent past. As a result of a collaboration between Pinta NY and FLORA ars+natura, a center for contemporary art in Bogotรก, Colombia (www.arteflora.org) one of the eight artists of Pinta Emerge will be selected for a month-long residency in Colombia, resulting in a one-person show at FLORA in the second semester of 2014. Centro

Pinta Centro, a regional, curated project will be organized by Omar Lopez-Chahoud (New York/ Miami), concentrating on Central America. Curated by Omar Lopez-Chahoud Curating the Central American section for Pinta New York has provided me an excellent opportunity to look at a region of the world that has been neglected by the international art community for far too long. During my research, I have found a core group of galleries that are deeply committed to exhibiting the work of Central American artists who focus on the region’s unique social and political history.

Video

Pinta Video presents a selection of new video art curated by Octavio Zaya (New York/Boston). Curated by Octavio Zaya Fractures While experiencing and thinking on the works selected for this presentation –the first of its kind at PINTA-New York– there is this ongoing feeling that we are living within the irreducible matrix of a multiplicity of times (pace G. Deleuze). Time not only seems to be multiple, but it also generates multiplicities, while repelling any reduction to a space-time continuum (Garet, Vizcaino). It seems as if those times were incommensurate dimensions of one another, processes resisting stability, permanence, totality or completion (Vizcaino, Marti). Often, the undefined differentiation of thought and thinking is woven into time’s multiplicities as fracture (Aires, Motta, Pizzani), and, at times, this fracture invites new, though transitory, transformative formations (Martinat, Garet, Motta, Vizcaino). These works, as thoughts, might be experienced as a break, a pause, or an interruption in the order of time, which, in turn, brings fracture into thinking. Thoughts of fractures / fractured thoughts, against time.

Next

Curatorial Committee PINTA Next features young artists and emerging galleries selected by the full curatorial committee of PINTA New York 2013. The seventeen participating exhibitors have been open under five years, recognized by the curators for their unique programs, and represent the next generation of exciting young artists. These spaces have adopted a wide range of formats – white cube galleries, roving curatorial projects, collective art studios, and artist-run spaces – to pursue their commitment of promoting emerging art in their respective countries.
