River scenes
Born in 1884, Paulémile Pissarro became an established Post-Impressionist artist, who throughout his career took great inspiration from the subject of water. The youngest son of Camille Pissarro, Paulémile was interested in the relationship between light, colour and water reflections, with river scenes becoming one of his most important motifs. Starting from 1918 and covering a period of 50 years, this catalogue explores these scenes to present a beautiful insight into the course of Paulémile’s oeuvre.
Spending the majority of his life in the Normandy countryside, Paulémile was stimulated by the luscious rivers he saw daily. It was during the early 1920’s while living in Lyons-La-Forêt, adjacent to the River Eure, that Paulémile developed a ‘Floating Studio’. Aptly named and highly original, it was a boat where Paulémile kept his painting equipment and could render the surrounding scenes from the middle of the river, as opposed to from the bank. The impact this had upon his practice was monumental, with his works giving the sense of water escaping from the painting, and allowing the viewer to feel at one with the river, as if we too are floating. Paulémile, continued to use a ‘Floating Studio’ following his move in the early 1930’s to Clécy, directly next to the River Orne - arguably his greatest source of inspiration.
Across his life, Paulémile’s technique and approach to capturing the essence of water evolved. Early works such as L’Abbaye de Brantôme (P.2) are particularly indicative of the role his father Camille played in the development of his technique, with the visible, individual brush strokes recalling Impressionism. However, the works he executed during the 1920’s pay greater hom age to Paul Cézanne, with Paulémile’s choice of restrained palettes and blocks of flat colour reflecting his burgeoning interest in Cubism. His Godfather, Claude Monet was also a continual influence, with the diligence he paid to water a testament to the time Paulémile spent during his adolescence in Monet’s garden at Giverny.
With Paulémile’s style changing throughout his career, his river scenes are considered some of his most recognisable and collectible paintings. In our view, this subject matter embodies the very best of Paulémile’s work and we are pleased to have such a rich selection of them available in our collection.
