Welcome Let’s be honest, it is a good feeling to be out of 2020. A long brutal year which was like the unwanted gift that just kept on giving. But now we are in a new year. A fresh start. A blank page. Light is at the end of the tunnel and now is a time to reflect on what went before and plan for the future. In this issue we have embraced that clean slate to make a clean start. Let’s get healthier, wealthier and happier. With plenty of vegan recipes and fitness tips for body and mind I am certain there is something to help you make a better version of yourself. This year we want to be able to see the loved ones and friends whom we have so dearly missed. To emerge from the lonely existence and make the most of every moment. We all want to be able to show our appreciation to the key workers in person. To the nurses, doctors, police, care-workers, teachers and all who have been protecting our now and our futures we thank you. We will be eternally in your debt. The vaccines which are on the horizon not only offer us all immunisation and protection... they offer us hope.

Here at Places & Faces HQ we’ve been busy choosing our top picks for safely going out or snuggling up inside this January. Here’s what’s happening locally and on your TV screen this month…

Staying in Watch Soul Disney+

January might be drab and dark, but you’ve got your new pyjamas from Christmas and some leftover chocolates – it’s time to settle down with a nice family film. Disney+ has provided the feel-good factor we all need with Soul, Disney/Pixar’s newest animated comedy. Joe Gardner (voiced by Jamie Foxx) is a school music teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town. But one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before – a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth. Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with a precocious soul, 22 (voiced by Tina Fey), and discovers the answers to some of life’s most important questions.

ith hope on the horizon, and talk of vaccinations – as we go to press – I’m sure everyone is looking forward to a new year of possibilities. For most of 2020 the country focused its mind on the things to do and places to stay nearby and in England in general. Domestic travel has never been so popular, with people who rarely holiday in their own country discovering some of the best places to stay, eat and drink closer to home, whilst also visiting beautiful sights and attractions. England is brimming with high quality places to enjoy ourselves and we’re lucky that there is no shortage of these places in Norfolk. There are also plenty of exciting outdoor activities and culture, as well as incredible experiences. And whilst we know nearly every corner of business has suffered immeasurably because of the pandemic, we saw tourism beauty spots, attractions, and accommodation full during the summer and October school holidays. Paving the way for more people than ever taking a domestic break in the UK in 2021 and more

people throwing themselves into doing things and visiting places just around the corner from where they live. Food and drink were high on the agenda in 2020. People had more time to spend in the kitchen and were trying more inventive meals to cook whilst not wasting ingredients. We were also heading out in our droves – when we could – to eat in pubs, pop-ups and restaurants or when we couldn’t, ordering restaurant quality food from eateries that had turned into takeaways. deliveries and late-night shopping. So, in that vein, here are two wonderful food and drink businesses who have changed things up recently, offering hands on experiences to get stuck into, things we can book, look forward to and enjoy during 2021. The owners of Gyre & Gimble – a gin bar in The Norwich Lanes (other spirits available too), spent much of 2020 perfecting the art of gin distilling. Like many business owners who had to temporarily close their doors, they spent the time diversifying their offer, coming up with new products to sell. The result was three of their own branded gins which launched last October inspired by Lewis Carroll’s book Alice Through the Looking Glass. But in addition to their bar and gin production they also offer their own Gyre & Gimble Academy offering gin making experiences for £80 per person. During a workshop choose from over 30 botanical ingredients to create a bespoke gin to take home, while your recipe is saved for another day. During all of this, sip cocktails

and learn about the history of gin. Sounds like a good use of leisure time to me. Is 2021 the year to take your skills to a whole new level? The Richard Hughes Cookery School at The Assembly House in Norwich is an established school which has been running for many years. Richard himself is a muchloved name in Norfolk who is passionate about local produce and how we use it. His cookery courses cover all manner of themes and are really fun in his beautiful state of the art kitchen. Classes are available to book for the first half of the year. With a choice of 1-day, or longer courses including a Sunday morning series called The Sunday Morning Bake Off. This takes place over four weekends where you’ll learn the art of making doughnuts, bread, meringues, macarons and chocolates. Classes are £75 each or the full course for £250 per person. In other classes learn to cook game, fish with sauces, Italian, Spanish and French dishes. Plus, there’s a new course for die hard romantics - ‘The Most Romantic Dinner Ever Cooked By You’ (13 February)

for Valentine’s Day. You cook a stunning meal for two to take home and present. Sounds like a great plan. All of these lessons aim to hone your skills and expand your knowledge. Plus, as a treat for your hard work most classes include in the price your lunch or an afternoon tea on the day. The Cookery School also has a series of guest chef’s dinners if you prefer to stay out of the kitchen. The pop-ups take place over 4 days with 4 chefs cooking 5 courses with each chef having a link back to our county. Dinner is £55 per head with dates: 4, 11, 18 and 25 February. And finishing with eating rather than cooking. Keep an eye on Norwich Market. During summer 2020 and at Christmas the food and drink stalls collaborated on a number of evenings offering al fresco tables to book to enjoy beer from Sir Toby’s Beers and meals from various market vendors. It was a huge success, so I have my fingers crossed that it will come back for 2021. For updated safety information, full details of events, places to eat and drink, stories, where to shop and visit in Norwich and beyond go to visitnorwich.co.uk.

ith over 1,000 years of history

to share, including impressive abbey ruins; Suffolk’s sole cathedral; and the only surviving Regency playhouse in Britain, the market town of Bury St Edmunds is an ideal break for lovers of all things yesteryear. Haled as Suffolk’s foodie town, it’s also a fantastic place to tuck in to a variety of top notch nosh – not to mention the allure of the town’s two breweries.

What to see and do No matter the time of year, a visit to Bury St Edmunds isn’t complete without a stroll through the beautiful Abbey Gardens. With the abbey ruins providing a dramatic backdrop, this mix of floral displays and attractions such as crazy golf, an aviary and a children’s play area will keep everyone happy. The Arc Shopping centre is also a great place

to start exploring the town. With a large car park, plenty of shopping outlets and eateries, and home to the fabulous Apex theatre. From here you can expand your trip and explore what the historic streets have to offer.

Lunch After exploring the cobbled streets and shops, sate your hunger at Pea Porridge, a delightfully laid back and cosy neighbourhood restaurant which is conveniently tucked away next to Old Cannon Brewery – why not squeeze in a brewery tour after you eat? Once a bakery, with its original bread oven still in place, the two 19th century cottages now comprise three charming dining rooms. Prioritising local, seasonal produce, Pea Porridge serves up a unique menu of European, British and Middle Eastern dishes and a selection of rare wines that you won’t find in Tesco. www.peaporridge.co.uk

The Angel Hotel This striking Georgian, ivy-clad boutique hotel is famous within the town for its connection to Charles Dickens, who stayed here several times throughout his life and even mentioned the hotel in The Pickwick Papers. Situated right in the centre of Bury St Edmunds, inside you’ll find an eclectic contrast of comfy contemporary design with touches of exotic grandeur. All rooms are en-suite, with some featuring elegant freestanding copper baths. Downstairs, The Angel Eaterie restaurant has a well-deserved reputation for fine dining. They also serve afternoon teas and host regular wine nights.

The Nutshell is one of the smallest pubs in the country, measuring just 15ft by 7ft. Obviously, at the moment this makes it a hard place to social distance in, but luckily they are now able to offer an outdoor table service. Serving some of the region’s finest ales and boasting a quirky bar full of memorabilia and historical items, this is certainly one place to put on the ‘to visit’ list when times are more normal once again. www.thenutshellpub.co.uk

Big Magic: Creative living beyond fear by Elizabeth Gilbert

Offering insights into the

mysterious nature of inspiration, Elizabeth Gilbert asks us to embrace our curiosity and let go of needless suffering. She shows us how to get to grips what we most love, and how to face down what we fear most. Gilbert discusses the attitudes, approaches, and habits we need in order to live our most creative lives. Balancing between soulful spirituality and cheerful pragmatism, she encourages us to uncover the “strange jewels” that are hidden within each of us. Whether we are looking to write a book, make art, find new ways to address challenges in our work, embark on a dream which has been long deferred, or simply infuse our everyday lives with more mindfulness and passion, Big Magic cracks open a world of wonder and joy. Gilbert strikes a playful and conversational tone, but make no mistake, this is all straight talk. Her no BS attitude helps do away with the unrealistic expectations and unnecessary melodrama attached to the concept of “creative living”.

Self help and strategy books are not for everyone, and with so many on the market aimed at so many walks of life you almost need a self help book to help you choose the right one. Here are a few of our favourites, old and new, to set you on the right path.

Dare to Be You: The Infinite Game by Simon Sinek Defy self-doubt, From the best selling fearlessly follow author of Start With Why and your own path & Leaders Eat Last comes the of a simple question be confidently you! exploration of, “Do you know how to play the by Matthew Syed

The title of the book is

almost a chapter on its own, but don’t let that put you off. The book is aimed at children and is an excellent alternative to the bedtime read. From the bestselling and award-winning author of You Are Awesome comes Matthew Syed’s muchanticipated follow-up. Drawing examples from sport, science and even business, Dare to Be You empowers young readers to follow their own path, love what makes them different and question the world around them. With his trademark mix of hilarious text, stylish illustration, personal insights and inspiring real-life examples, including Greta Thunberg and Malala Yousafzai, Syed introduces children to the power of diverse thinking. This ground-breaking, practical and positive book will help kids develop the inner confidence to grow into happy adults who know - and, more importantly, LIKE - themselves.

game you’re in?” In finite games, like football or chess, the players are known, the rules are fixed, and the endpoint is clear. The winners and losers are easily identified. In infinite games, like business or politics or life itself, the players come and go, the rules are changeable, and there is no defined endpoint. There are no winners or losers in an infinite game; there is only ahead and behind. Sinek is widely known and has a huge following with interesting YouTube videos covering these and other topics. We recommend you watch how he makes comparisons of marketing between a homeless person and Microsoft and ultimately concludes they are the same, how good and bad marketing can work and how changing the narrative constructs incredibly different outcomes. This book will help leaders of business large and small think differently about how to develop the company in directions that go beyond its traditional business model.

fab 5star the da THE

We’re putting our best foot forward as we enter 2021. Start your morning with our five

healthy ways to

Avocado on toast As every millenial (apparently) knows, mashed avocado on wholemeal toast is not just a healthy, but trendy way to start the day. Avocados are packed with fibre and monounsaturated fats, which should leave you feeling full for longer. Add a squeeze of lime juice, some tomatoes and paprika for a guacamole twist, and of course, don’t forget to snap a picture for the ‘Gram.

Smoothie Perfect for life on the go or those that don’t have much of an appetite first thing, smoothies can be whizzed up in a matter of seconds and then taken with you on your morning commute. Smoothies are a great way of sneaking fruit, veg and seeds into your system. Add a handful of spinach or a serving of chia seeds to your chosen fruits for ultimate smugness. Blend with water or milk and enjoy.

DID YOU KNOW? Impress your breakfast companions with these facts about everyone’s favourite stone fruit, the avocado.

Banana & cinnamon porridge There’s nothing more comforting on a dreary January morn than a warming bowl of porridge. Oats are high in fibre, low in fat and have cholesterol-reducing abilities, making them a breakfast superhero. Add a mashed banana and a pinch of cinnamon for a naturally sweet, winter spiced flavour – plus, you’ll already have totted up one of your 5-a-day, winner! This versatile staple can be topped with any fruit, nuts or seeds that tickle your fancy, so it never gets boring.

• According to British Vogue, more than 3,000,000 photos of avocado toast were uploaded to Instagram every day in the summer of 2017. • Avocados contain more potassium than bananas – nearly double the amount in fact. • Avocados are in the same family as cinnamon. Really! • The world record for the largest avocado is a hefty 5lb, 3.6oz. • Before they were known as avocados, they were called alligator pears – an accurate description!

Granola, fruit & yoghurt I don’t know about you, but this is something I always eat when at a hotel’s buffet breakfast, so it feels especially decadent to recreate it at home. Look for granola brands that have a higher oat, nut and seed content as they will be typically higher in protein and fibre and lower in sugar and salt. Use greek yoghurt with added probiotics (your gut will thank you) and top with a few handfuls of fruit such as strawberries and blueberries to tick off one of your 5-a-day.

Eggs How do you like your eggs in the morning? Whether boiled, scrambled or poached, eggs are high in protein and important nutrients. They also promote fullness and help maintain steady blood sugar levels – eggs-ellent!

Mash the banana in a large mixing bowl, stir in the cashew/almond butter, melted coconut oil and syrup. Now stir in the chai seed gel. Add the oats, cinnamon, baking powder and a pinch of salt and stir to form a thick mixture. Fold through most of the blueberries. Pour into the lined dish, top with the extra blueberries and bake for 35 minutes until firm to the touch. Allow the bars to cool fully on a wire rack and slice into squares/ bars. SECRET INGREDIENT

www.munchyseeds.co.uk

Method: Preheat the oven to 180°C. Put the cubed sweet potato on a baking tray with a drizzle of rapeseed oil, season with sea salt and black pepper and roast for 30 minutes. Put a large saucepan on a medium heat with a tablespoon of rapeseed oil. Add the onion and garlic, reduce the heat to low, pop a lid on the pan and cook until the onion has softened, around 5 minutes. Take the lid off, turn the heat back up to medium, season with sea salt and black pepper and add the spices (cumin, coriander, paprika, chipotle paste). Stir for a minute to combine. Add the courgettes and pepper and cook for a further 5 minutes to soften the veg slightly. Pour in the chopped tomato, season again with salt and pepper and cook on a low heat, without a lid, for 25 minutes. This should soften the veg and reduce the sauce. At the end of the cooking time, stir in the peanut butter, kidney beans, roasted sweet potato and spinach and cook for a further 2 minutes. Check that it’s seasoned to your liking and add more sea salt and black pepper if required. Serve with a generous helping of crunchy Mild Chilli Munchy Seeds. 25

quick, flavourful vegan curry that’s delicious either on its own or as part of a larger spread, this recipe from Paul Foster takes top quality tomatoes and chickpeas and cooks them in a spice-tempered oil with plenty of lime juice for freshness and acidity.

Method: Pour the oil into a large heavy-bottomed saucepan and place over a medium heat. Add the star anise, cardamom, cumin seeds, lemongrass, garlic and the chopped ginger. Fry for a few minutes until very fragrant and the ingredients turn golden, then remove from the heat and set aside to cool slightly. Pass the oil through a fine sieve into a clean pan, discarding the solids. Place the pan back over a medium heat and fry the onions for 5 minutes until soft but not coloured. Pour in enough water to just cover the onions,

then leave to simmer until the water has evaporated and the onions start to release the absorbed oil, stirring regularly. Add the curry powder and cook out for 2 minutes, then stir in the tomato purée and cook for a further minute. Pour in the tomatoes and chickpeas, give everything a good stir, then leave to simmer gently for 30 minutes. When ready to serve, stir in the grated ginger along with the lime zest and juice. Season with salt, garnish with the coriander and serve with rice and/or flatbreads.

2021

Let us all put 2020 in the rear view mirror and let’s make 2021 the best it can be by cleansing your mind, body and de-junking your life. By Andrew Hirst

If you don’t take the time to invest in yourself no one else will. Ensure you can fulfil your dreams and desires by dedicating the time to them.

W

ithout a doubt

2020 was a rough year for everyone. But now we have a light at the end of the tunnel with the various vaccines that are on the horizon, and with a new year now upon us it is important to get planning and look ahead to the future. This is a great time to change anything you are not happy with in your life, although I recommend making small, sustainable changes. Go too big too soon and you might just find that whatever you have planned doesn’t stick. If you are going to put in all the effort to think about and plan change we really need to have a realistic view of what we are capable of achieving; play to our strengths

to give change the best chance of success. As a species we generally do not like change. It upsets our equilibrium. We like things to stay the same and have a permanence about them, however permanence is a fiction of our realities as nothing in life is permanent. A constant cycle of transition. Some changes are thrust upon us and are out of our control, but many little changes can be made which we can control; getting fitter, eating healthier, looking after our mental health. So what are we waiting for? If 2020 has taught us anything it is to become more aware of the present moment, enjoy the world around us more and understand ourselves a little better.

The elephant in the room!

 ou y e Fre Min

Life can be relentless at times and it is easy to lose touch with the world around us. Failing to look after your mental health will always lead to disaster. There are many areas of your life which probably need attention, but remember you don’t have to eat the whole elephant at the same time. As Martin Luther King Jr said “You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” And that is definitely the most important thing… taking the first step. Mindfulness may be used as a buzzword at times but it is a great way to reduce stress and feel more in control of your life. Ultimately mindfulness is a basic human ability. The ability to be fully in touch with our now, our surroundings and be

fully present in the moment; where we are, what we are doing and what we are experiencing. When we approach all of these influences in a calm manner it is easier to not feel the urge to overreact to situations or feel overwhelmed. Although this ability is in all of us it is something that must be practiced on a daily basis. Don’t be put off if you struggle with mindfulness at first, perseverance is the key. Sharpening your awareness to what you are feeling, whether through your physical senses or your thoughts and emotions, is your path to mindfulness. With practice you can retrain your brain and some research shows this can lead to a remodelling of the physical structure of the brain.

You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step. Martin Luther King, Jr. The origins of mindfulness are linked to Buddhism and meditation. When you set out it is advised to set aside time to meditate but keep it short to begin with. Maybe five minutes and slowly increase to longer periods. In our everyday life we can also use a few seconds to centre ourselves and gather our thoughts. As an experiment, next time the phone rings instead of rushing to answer it, take a moment, breathe and then have the conversation. I am sure you will find your life becoming less stressful and more productive when you have gathered your thoughts first.

30

If you have a problem, no matter how big or small, it is always best to face it; unless it is a monster with a big stick then it is best advised to wait for the cavalry. Most of our problems don’t have a stick and big teeth. You can’t avoid them forever so it is best to confront them head-on. If you are feeling overwhelmed and not sure what to do then you must talk to someone; a friend, colleague, relative or, if you need, a professional. It’s OK to ask for help. Asking for help shows that you are a strong individual ready to take control of the situation. Professional help can come in many different guises depending on the problem. Financial stress for example has many different organisations you can talk to: National Debtline, StepChange Debt Charity or Citizens Advice for example are great places to start. The main thing to remember is whatever problems you are experiencing you aren’t alone, you just need to talk.

Take the time...

It is important to make time for yourself. Block out time in your calendar if this helps; schedule it in and stick to it. You can take time to yourself by simply reading a book or heading out on a walk. Walking through the hundreds of miles of trails Norfolk and Suffolk has to offer is a great way to relax, clear your mind and get some exercise all at the same time. Combine two of your loves with an audio book and listen whilst you walk. If you don’t take the time to invest in yourself no one else will. Ensure you can fulfil your dreams and desires by dedicating the time to them. If you want to write a novel or paint a picture take the time to give it a go. It is also important to remember you might not be very good at it to start with, but if you never start you will never improve. It is OK to fail. Failing at something means growth, it doesn’t mean giving up. Experimenting with different things is a healthy way to express yourself and creative expression and overall wellbeing are linked. Dedicate time to your relationships with your friends and loved ones. If you have a partner you may feel at times like they take you for granted. Have you ever thought that they might feel the same? Put the time into these relationships and you will reap the rewards. Think not what this relationship can do for you, but what you can do for this relationship and you won’t go far wrong obviously don’t inadvertently turn yourself into a doormat, healthy relationships have a certain amount of give and take.

Stress

Not keeping your stress levels in check can cause all sorts of problems. It can sneak up on us at times and before you know it we are suffering from all sorts of physical, emotional and behavioural changes. You may become indecisive, inflexible, withdrawn and not able to sleep properly. Emotional changes can quickly spiral out of control and you may experience anxiety, fear, anger, sadness, or frustration. These can lead to additional strains being put on relationships with the people in your life who you are close to, making you feel angrier or more aggressive than normal. There may be a change in your sexual habits, and some people may find that their consumption of alcohol increases. These feelings can sometimes feed on each other and produce physical symptoms, making you feel even worse. For some people, stressful life events can contribute to symptoms of depression. More physical symptoms can be headaches, indigestion, nausea, excess perspiration, palpitations and various other aches and pains. Some research has shown that a person who experiences stress over prolonged periods may suffer from insomnia, memory recall, lethargy and even gastrointestinal conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or stomach ulcers. The best option for recovery is to remove the negative influences causing the stress. Sometimes easier said than done, however even implementing small changes over a longer period rather than one big change can help with your overall health and stress management long term.

 t l a e H

Looking after our physical health has never been so prevalent. It has been difficult for some of us to keep motivated and keep moving especially through the various lockdowns and tiers. A great place to start is cutting down on your alcohol intake. A dry January might be a little extreme for some of us, but we all really need to reduce our weekly units. The odd cheeky glass of wine or a G&T after a stressful day at work can soon mount up. Not to mention the calories. We all know that there are a lot of calories in our alcoholic beverage of choice but it is worth reminding ourselves that the average large glass of wine has a whopping 228. Swap it for water. I know it is massively different but the cleanse of your system will do you the world of good. Drinking more water can help you feel better and even make your skin look fresher.

January may not necessarily feel like the best time to start a couch to 5k. The cold weather doesn’t really entice you out, but if you want to get a head start on your summer fitness then now is the time. The perfect beach body isn’t what we are aiming for here and nor do we want it. Get moving and increase your overall fitness little by little. If you let a little thing like the cold weather stop you then you will always find an excuse not to get out there. Invest in some tech, an iWatch or FitBit to help you track your progress, it really will help you keep focused and maintain your progress. Whilst you are increasing your fitness you need to eat healthier. Up the veggies, go vegan if you want, and increase the amount of fruits in your diet. If you are lacking in certain vitamins increasing them can make all the difference to your wellbeing. Pick a good balanced diet rather than go on a diet. Most nutritionists will agree that trendy diets are not the answer. Lowering the calories and movement are the only true answers to weight loss.

1. Don’t drink calories

5. Eat fatty fish

8. Do some cardio

Sugary drinks are among the most fattening items you can put into your body. This especially includes alcohol.

Fish is a great source of high-quality protein and healthy fat. This is particularly true of fatty fish, such as salmon, which is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids.

Doing cardio exercise is one of the best things you can do for your mental and physical health. It’s particularly effective at reducing belly fat.

6. Drink water

9. Don’t smoke and only drink in moderation

10

ing th to get started on your journey to a healthier you 2. Eat more nuts

Despite being high in fat, nuts are incredibly nutritious and healthy.

3. Avoid junk food Processed foods and junk food are incredibly unhealthy, eat real food instead.

4. Get enough sleep The importance of getting enough quality sleep cannot be overstated. Poor sleep can drive insulin resistance, disrupt your appetite hormones, and reduce your physical and mental performance.

Drinking enough water, especially before meals, can have numerous benefits. Surprisingly, it can boost the number of calories you burn.

7. Track your food intake You don’t have to do it all the time but every now and then it is good to know exactly how many calories you eat.

If you smoke, tackle this problem first. Diet and exercise can wait. If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation and consider avoiding it completely if you tend to drink too much.

10. Don’t eat lots of refined carbs Refined carbs have been highly processed to remove their fibre and they are relatively low in nutrients and can harm your health when eaten in excess.

It’s cold. It’s raining. It’s not at the forefront of your mind to get off the sofa to get fit and running. But now is the perfect time to start. Just think in nine short weeks from now you could reach your goal. So by mid March you could be running 5k. There are many apps to check out, but a good place to start is the resources on the NHS website - www.nhs.uk. They have a complete running plan with a podcast you can download to get you started and motivated. If you want to have something a little more advanced check out what is available on the app store.

Give vegan food a try and you will soon see that you too can thrive on a plant based diet.

come along to scupper our best laid plans. Washing machines tend to break at the most inconvenient times. But by streamlining your spending you may find you have a bit more you can save. If you want to look at the bigger picture – remortgaging, pensions and investing – and don’t know where to start then it is best to speak to an expert. Independent financial advisors (IFA) can help you with these more complex financial matters. Make sure you are using a qualified and accredited IFA. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) requires all IFAs to pass what they call ‘Level 4 qualifications’, so you should be looking for a diploma-level certificate, such as the Diploma in Financial

Planning (DipFP) (formerly the Advanced Financial Planning Certificate), or even better, the Advanced Diploma in Financial Planning (ADFP). Normally your first appointment is free so this is the time to find out if you are comfortable with the IFA. Don’t feel embarrassed about asking questions if you do not understand anything, you are potentially going to be transacting large sums of money via this person, so you have every right to ask questions and make sure you’re confident in your decision. Remember you are under no pressure after your first meeting to use this particular IFA, if you are not impressed, you can always find someone else.

 t l a e W Another part of our lives to give the once over in January is our finances. Many of us are not making the most of what we have. Start small by looking through your banking app. Most of them these days give you some great features which can show you trends of where, when and how you are spending your hard earned cash. You can use this to make some informed decisions on changes you need to make. Another needless spend is on those subscriptions we don’t really use. Do you really watch the streaming services you are subscribed to? Are you really using that app which costs £2.99 per month? All of these little expenses mount up and are so easily overlooked. Be ruthless… you can always resubscribe if you want to catch the new season of that must watch show. Upgrades are another pitfall. Having that latest handset for example is a nice luxury and will cost a bundle, but think of how much you can save by shifting to a sim only contract. If you normally have the latest phone you could be saving up to 75% on your monthly bill just by keeping what you have. One of the things we all struggle with is saving. Those everyday surprises

Set some

When looking to start on a life cleanse it is important to remember that you shouldn’t tackle too much in one go. Be kind to yourself as well as being realistic. Don’t over set your goals and understand what your capabilities are. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, make sure you try and play to your strengths and work on your weaknesses. However don’t cut yourself too much slack or you’ll never get anything achieved. Have a look at some of our suggestions to get yourself underway: Set some health goals

e om H

For obvious reasons we have all been spending a lot more time at home over the past year. January is a great time to start giving your home a cleanse, and we don’t just mean catching up on the dusting. Over our lives we accumulate large volumes of stuff and a large amount of it sits in a cupboard never seeing the light of day. 1 in 2 Brits admit to holding onto things for longer than they should, and 1 in 3 say they don’t like the idea of getting rid of their possessions. Research has revealed that we actually store over five times more than our European neighbours. I know it is difficult to part with things but a clearer, less cluttered home can help with our mental and physical fitness, not to mention it will be easier to find things. Get in the cupboards and the loft, and be ruthlessly efficient. Firstly start with the places you can see – the dumping zones. We all have them. That area in the kitchen that gets junked up with all of the bits’n’bobs of everyday life – the junk mail, receipts and random items found in our pockets and our bags. For some reason many of us like to defer the decision to throw it away or keep it. Another great place for clutter is the bedside table. Don’t have a stack of books to read, just keep the one you are reading at the moment, maybe one more. Keep this area as clear as possible. 34

When you’re finished with the obvious places start on the hidden ones. These are often more of a challenge. The cupboards and the drawers where we have gone with the ‘out of sight, out of mind’ approach. Normally stuffed to the brim with items which form a smorgasbord of tat. These items are always harder to offload because it was quite clearly harder to make the decision to get rid because you felt the need to keep it safe in a drawer. Other offenders are the kitchen cupboards. Spices and packets which are well past their use-bys. I attacked these areas of my kitchen this time last year and discovered a fajita packet mix which went out of date in 2015. Coupled with the multiple sizes of plastic tubs which didn’t have a lid and lids that didn’t have a tub. When it was all cleared out it created a space where I could fit a new kitchen gadget. Moving on to the bedroom you need to tackle the two big problem areas – the wardrobe and under the bed. We all have clothes we don’t wear. Don’t keep it hanging around with the thought that “I might need to wear this one day”... because chances are you won’t. If you are feeling confident get everything out on the bed and go through each item one by one. Ask the important questions. When did I last wear it? Does it still fit? What condition is it in? Am I really ever going to wear this ever again? Even if it was a spur of the moment buy that you haven’t found the right occasion for. Personally I think your ‘chunky knit unicorn jumper’ you brought six years ago may never get worn, so get rid. The main thing to remember is that we all consume far too much; clear out what you don’t need and make the most of what you have kept. Buy well and use it wisely.

If you want to work towards a park run or a Tough Mudder start as soon as you can. The summer feels like a long way off but it really isn’t. Start as soon as you can and you only have to start small, but at least you have started. Maybe something as challenging as this isn’t for you, then just set a goal of improving your overall fitness... your future self will thank you for it.

Cut down

Want to lose some weight or just clean up from the excess over the festive months? Try smaller portions, unless it’s vegetables, then go big. Eat less carbohydrates and up your intake of dark-green veg. Not only will this help you shed some pounds, you will feel the health benefits. Cut down on the alcohol and drink more water. If you don’t want to do a dry January then just hit the wine on a Friday and Saturday night. Replace with water during the week.

Bags

What’s in your bag? No seriously what’s in there? Are you needlessly carrying around junk for no reason? In one way the extra weight is a good workout, but are you struggling to find anything? Tip out and have a good sift through your most used bags.

Holkham launches their sustainability and conservation action plan – WONDER

T

he definition of WONDER is ‘a feeling of amazement, admiration or awe, caused by something beautiful, remarkable, or unfamiliar’. Living in Norfolk, we are aware of how remarkable a place such as Holkham is. From the sweeping sands of its beaches and bounteous wildlife of the nature reserve, to the estate’s lush green parkland alive with deer and birds of prey, to the farmland rich in biodiversity, Holkham is a diverse plethora of landscapes to treasure. As we step into 2021, hopefully it will be a time not only to leave the challenges of 2020 behind us, but also to join Holkham on their journey of sustainability and conservation. 2021 is the perfect time for WONDER. But what is WONDER? Well, it’s an ambitious estate-wide sustainability and conservation action plan setting out ambitious goals to be achieved over the next five, ten and twenty years. Holkham’s vision is to be the UK’s most pioneering and sustainable rural estate. One part of this vision is to protect, enhance and revitalise Holkham for the benefit of future generations. Through WONDER, Holkham will focus on three core objectives, committing Holkham to: • Pioneer environmental gain – increasing natural capital every year with every decision made. • Champion low carbon living – become a carbon negative estate by 2040. • Tread lightly to stamp out waste – reducing the amount of non-recycled waste generated by 10% each year for the next ten years. These are meaty subjects, but they introduce to many of us some perhaps unfamiliar terminology which we simply must learn to understand as they are imperative to any effort to improve our habits and environment for the better. To help, Holkham will be releasing a series of short films exploring each key focus, as

well as updates on their live projects, all of which will be available on their website and social media channels – simply search #HolkhamWonder or visit holkham.co.uk/ wonder. To start with, Holkham are undertaking an in-depth carbon audit of all business – from land to leisure – results of which are due to be published in the spring. This will be followed by the release of their biodiversity audit next September. Data is incredibly important to ensure the goals, and projects helping to achieve these ambitions, are informed and measurable. WONDER isn’t the first step in the sustainability journey for Holkham though. The estate has already made advancements in renewable energy with a 100-acre solar farm, smaller roof-mounted solar systems, an anaerobic digester and biomass, ground and heat source heating systems. Holkham is also already respected for delivering sustainable food production – including reducing tillage; planting cover crops; extending the crop rotation; bringing livestock back into the rotation – as well as delivering biodiversity enhancements and habitat provision across the farms and the Holkham National Nature Reserve.

Through WONDER Holkham is pushing the boundaries further still and setting new standards. As Tom Coke, 8th Earl of Leicester, explains: “Sustainability is not a new phenomenon at Holkham, quite the opposite in fact. Sustainability has been front of mind for hundreds of years. From the pioneering agricultural approaches of my ancestor ‘Coke of Norfolk’ back in the late 18th century, to present day investments, innovative sustainable practices are, simply put, a natural Holkham behaviour. I, together with my team, look forward to continuing this sustainability journey – one that will help ensure Holkham is enhanced and revitalised to benefit future generations and for a healthier planet.” By prioritising sustainability in everyday behaviours and decisions across the estate, WONDER will enable Holkham to connect habitats, enhance the biodiversity of landscapes, develop science led innovations, deliver responsible construction, make operations leaner and greener, phase out single use plastics and minimise waste. Peter Mitchell, Holkham Managing Director, concludes: “We are guardians of amazing natural resources, stunning landscapes, and breath-taking biodiversity. We chose the word Wonder to remind us that understanding, protecting, improving, enjoying and sharing these assets are central to our commitments to sustainability and conservation. There is excitement and ambition across the estate to make a big difference over the next 20 years.”

To ind out more, watch the ilms and keep abreast of the live projects of WONDER, simply visit holkham.co.uk/wonder or search your favourite social channel using #HolkhamWonder.

I’

M SURE WE are all pleased

to see the back of 2020 and look forward to a fresh start in 2021. At this time of year we often use the expression ‘New Year, New You’. My ‘new me’ started a couple of months ago with a visit to Polly Vincent, owner of Enhance Cosmetic Clinic. In the midst of the Covid pandemic and wearing a face mask so much, it’s never been more important to talk with your eyes, and I’ve always been so disappointed with my brows. Years of over plucking and age has resulted in a less than the perfect brow. I’ve tried some amazing products which unfortunately have only ever offered me a temporary solution. However when I had the opportunity for a permanent treatment with Polly I jumped at the chance. Enhance Cosmetic Clinic, based in Lowestoft, are a team of elite permanent makeup artists and technicians led by Polly Vincent, a respected technician in her field with over 13 years experience in the industry. Harmonising her artistic talent within the permanent makeup industry, she quickly established her name and brand within East Anglia and beyond. With strong links to award winning London academies and colleagues across the UK, Polly continually travels to update and renew her training to ensure her clients are consistently offered services at the very forefront of permanent makeup. Polly’s expertise in the industry has led to her becoming a training provider for beginner PMU students and gaining her Regional Director role for Biotek UK. Enhance Cosmetic Clinic’s services also include lip fillers, eyeliner, lip blusher, skin peels, dermaroller, dermal fillers and profhilo. From the moment I stepped through the door the service was incredible and everything is fully explained in a very Covid safe environment. Polly ensures every part of the procedure is discussed and the brows are mapped before any decision is made on their shape or the pigment is chosen. I had already

Enhance your by beauty expert

Tracey Wilkinson

completed the patch tests for dye and topical anaesthetic, and to be honest was blown away by how easy it was. Polly was amazing, checking on me throughout the process, and I am ecstatic about the finished result. I’ve now had my top up and am absolutly thrilled... waking up with brows is incredible. I feel I look younger and more ‘put together’ with minimal makeup. My face is redefined and I’m saving so much time each morning. Everyone has a different method or combination they can choose from including “Ombré”, soft and powdered, or bold and glamourous, the ombré brows are perfect for those ladies who like to wake up with makeup! “Combination” brows, hair strokes with shading is the latest in hyper-realistic eyebrow enhancements. Perfect for those with sparse brows or no brows at all. Polly uses 3-5 colours, individually blended to compliment your skin tone, to create the most natural and realistic eyebrow. Finally “hair by hair” simulation

brows. Polly will create and design a bespoke eyebrow for you, using the finest quality pigments to infuse hair-by-hair simulation that blend seamlessly into your natural eyebrow. This treatment lasts up to three years with regular maintenance colour boosts. Polly and her team are able to offer a free consultation by appointment to discuss your requirements. I for one am utterly thrilled with my end result and for me it’s a perfect start to what will hopefully be a better year. Here’s to 2021 and enhancing your brows! keep you motivated, but if you crave connectivity to third party apps and your iWatch then there is a slightly more expensive ‘Track” version.

This yoga app is great for beginners. Choose between 27 different sessions of varying difficulty levels and duration. More importantly the are over 350 illustrated pose images so you can practice your posture and alignment to make sure you are doing it right. The struggle with most yoga first-timers is knowing what you are doing and if you are doing it right. This is a great way to dip your toe in the water before committing to something a little more advanced.

HERE IS nothing quite like

getting home after a hard day at work, kicking off your shoes and relaxing on the sofa. Even more important at this time of the year as we all want to get cosy and shelter from the bitter January weather. Here at JHD Interiors we love offering people that satisfying feeling of comfort in their homes. The perfect sofa to fit with you, your family and your lifestyle is so important. Our bespoke sofa making service guides you through the process from design to manufacture, helping you make the right decisions for your needs along the way.

Size does matter First off you need to think about the size of the sofa. Will it fit in your room? Will it go through the doors? It is all well and good selecting your dream sofa only to find out that you can’t get it in the room you want or even in the house. Apart from getting it in, the other size question is will your selected sofa give you enough space for the whole family to stretch out comfortably? Are you using the space as a relaxing lounge to chill out and watch a movie together? Then you need to have the square footage to fit you all in. When we manufacture a sofa we take all of this into consideration and this is why we offer a free measuring service and site survey. This way there are no surprises when trying to fit through tight spaces. This does not necessarily mean

that the overall finished look of the sofa is compromised. Clever design features and modifications can be incorporated into the build such as removable arms or a sofa which is constructed in several pieces and reassembled on site. Ideal if you live in a cottage with a narrow hallway.

It’s all about the base The foundations of the sofa build are extremely important. It is no use having the right size and a great fabric if what’s underneath is inferior. For the frame we use responsibly sourced wood from the Black Forest. Beech is a really hardwearing wood which can withstand a lot of pressure over time, so it’s perfect for sofas that will get a lot of use. It’s really durable, a good weight bearing material and can withstand high impact force. This is why our sofas come with a 15 year guarantee.

Hey good looking Now that the frame is sorted our thoughts turn to the look of the sofa and the finishing touches. It can be difficult to pick a new sofa as ultimately we have to live with it for a long time. Comfort, design, practicality and the overall aesthetics come in to play. Many people want to be bold with their choices but either don’t know where to start or play it safe by ordering something similar to what they have always had in the past. This is where a bespoke tailor-made service really comes in to its own. Our expertise guides you

through the process and helps you to make informed decisions, and with one of the widest ranges of upholstery weight fabrics in the area there are plenty of options to choose from. All of these fabrics are not just selected for looks alone, they have been vigorously tested to ensure their durability. To ensure maximum comfort we prefer to use coiled or fish mouth springs in the base and back, where the design allows, to distribute the weight evenly. Hollow fibre cushions offer a natural look similar to feathers, but without the need to plump them up and have the added benefit of being non-allergic. Another option is to use a duvet wrapped foam core, which is available in different densities, and gives a luxurious look and feel. We invite our customers to try out the different cushioning options we have available to ensure they are sitting comfortably and stylishly.

Upcycle that sofa If your old sofa is looking a little tired, you have a family heirloom that needs a little love or you just want a new look then you can always have it reupholstered. During this service we check the construction of the piece before breathing a new lease of life into your furniture. Whatever your sofa needs... we have you covered.

ABLE COMMUNITY CARE has been in the same family for nearly four decades and now provides live-in care services throughout the UK. Since 1980 we have provided care and have met with thousands of families who are seeking an alternative to moving into a residential care home. Meeting people inevitably leads, either at the time of an assessment or even years later, to questions for which people are looking for answers. Information around all aspects of care is available but the road to finding out, especially at a time of crisis, about specific factors can be difficult and stressful. Able Community Care receives calls and emails on a regular basis with people asking if we can help with their search for information. Recently these questions have been asked of us...

I

t’s true that 2020 has been

a year like no other. We’ve seen challenges on a global scale that have impacted every aspect of our lives. However, as we move into the New Year, we are beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel, both from a health perspective as vaccines start to become available and from a financial perspective as markets continue to recover. The one thing that the crisis has reiterated is that investing is all about the long game. Those who can hold off accessing their investments for the time being are, we believe, more likely to see a gradual but hopefully complete recovery to where we were pre-COVID. If you do need to access capital you have tied up in savings and investments, I strongly recommend that you get independent advice about what to access first, in order to avoid locking in losses. The past year has seen values drop across the board, but where investors have had the benefit of portfolio management, it has been possible to mitigate some of the damage. Portfolio management involves giving an investment specialist the authority to make ongoing changes to the content of your portfolio as market conditions change. Some advice firms offer this as an add-on using third party managers whereas others, like Smith & Pinching, provide this as a core part of their investment service. The crisis has made us all think about our vulnerability too. We’ve seen an increase in the demand for income protection and other insurances that offer support when illness strikes. Now we are moving into the New Year, it’s time to give your finances a full healthcheck. There are very good reasons for this. Firstly, your long-term financial plans may need to be adjusted because of the

financial interruption of the last nine months. We can’t ignore the fact that growth and returns in some areas may have fallen short of expectations and some adjustment may be needed to put your plan back on track. Different investment types and styles have reacted differently to the crisis and some may look less attractive for

we emerge from the COVID crisis. There are opportunities now for new investment across pensions and general portfolios to benefit from potential future rises in markets but there are, of course, still real risks. Getting advice at this critical time will ensure that you only take the amount of risk that is comfortable for you.

The second reason to take control now in the first months of the year is that there are a number of annual reliefs and allowances that are available for use up to the end of the tax year on 5 April. future growth whilst others, such as the ethical investment sector and investments with strong ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) credentials, are showing new promise with increased demand as well as a greater focus on investing for the future, making these investments more desirable. The second reason to take control now in the first months of the year is that there are a number of annual reliefs and allowances that are available for use up to the end of the tax year on 5 April. These include your ISA allowance, the annual allowance for pensions and your annual gift allowances for Inheritance Tax purposes. It’s important to remember that any additional investments you choose to make now will take some time to process, so please don’t leave it until March to take action. I believe that financial planning is important – and now, more than ever as

Independent financial advice – ideally from a Chartered Financial Planner – will enable you to take informed decisions so that you can look with positivity to the year ahead. I wish you a healthy and prosperous New Year. Any opinions expressed in this article are subject to change and are not advice. Any solution described may not be suitable for everyone. The value of an investment and the income from it could go down as well as up. The return at the end of the investment period is not guaranteed and you may get back less than you originally invested.

Rachel Gilbert catches up with Fiona, who was supposed to be exploring Patagonia in 2020 before the pandemic put a halt to her plans. Instead, she is in Norwich, working her day job as a forensic accountant.

A

ccounting is stereotyped

as a somewhat dull profession, but Fiona has found an interesting niche and forged it into a very successful 30-year career. As a forensic accountant, she handles cases involving disputes over money — divorce, business separation, fraud and money laundering to name a few. She pays close attention to every detail with the assumption that any case could end up in court. With such a high-powered job, Fiona balances this out with a highly active

housework and enjoy your time with them.” This wasn’t her only challenge, however. The workforce in the accounting field is made up of a disproportionate amount of men. Occasionally, she will walk into a meeting and there will be a perception that Fiona will be taking notes or making the coffee as the only woman in the room. The solution to this, Fiona said, was to put herself forward and push herself. “It is important to chase goals and to

She has completed the notorious Wells Triathlon, National Three Peaks 24 hour challenge and zipwired off the roof of Ipswich Hospital. “I have vertigo, so that was quite a crazy challenge for me,” Fiona chuckled. Most of her traveling and challenges are completed with her family, but a few years ago, Fiona embarked on a solo trip to explore Shanghai. She said the experience was really challenging and scary but empowering. She is now planning a trip to the Antarctic for next year. Balancing everything hasn’t always come easy. Fiona found herself fielding negative comments, often about not being a full time mother when her children were young. However she said some of the best advice she received came early from a midwife. “The dust will be there long after the children leave,” she said. “Forget about the 66

find good mentors. We don’t think we can have it all — balancing a family, career and personal life. Women won’t apply for a job unless they have 90% of the required skills, where a man will apply with only 20%.” A former boss of Fiona’s was a great supporter — pushing her to be her best. He could be brutally honest, she said, but that was important for her development. Although her children aren’t following in her footsteps into the accounting field, Fiona is encouraging them to be confident and happy — the same advice she would give to her teenage self. “It matters more to me that they are happy and kind to others,” she said. “I try to encourage my daughter to be outgoing and active, as I was never really pushed into sports.” Being kind and outgoing is definitely in Fiona’s wheelhouse. For the last five

years, she has volunteered her time for the Samaritans, a charity that supports people in emotional distress or at risk of suicide in the UK. It is a change of pace from her day job where she talks a lot and gives instructions instead of acting as a listener. She also works as a support officer to local prisons, helping train and rehabilitate prisoners to support and listen to each other. “I am very passionate about the Samaritans,” Fiona said. “It is a privilege to help, having been helped myself at a low point, it is an honour to take calls.” Although balancing a high-powered job with stressful moments and such an active personal life, Fiona still finds the time to plan for even bigger goals, and run a very active Twitter account (Seasons Tweetings Christmas jumper series is highly recommended)! Next year, she would like to get back into the world of triathlon in addition to her trip to the Antarctic with her family. Additionally, she has a new role as partner within the FRP advisory firm. The hectic schedule does not, however, stop Fiona from being bubbly, outgoing and full of smiles. Fiona advises us all that “It is important to put yourself out there, push yourself and be ambitious.”
