Temple offers a variety of school options, public and private. Public school districts that serve Temple are Temple ISD, Belton ISD, Academy ISD, and Troy ISD. Private schools serving Temple include Central Texas Christian School, Holy Trinity Catholic High School, and St. Mary’s Catholic School. There are also many opportunities for higher education in and around Temple. Higher education institutions include Temple College, University of Mary-Hardin Baylor (UMHB – Belton), Central Texas College (Killeen), and Texas A&M Central Texas (Killeen).

WATER CONCERNS

The City of Temple’s Public Works Department is dedicated to providing exceptional service. If you believe you have a water leak, your water pressure seems low or you can’t find your shutoff valve, contact the City’s Public Works Department. While they can’t repair leaks on your side of the meter, they can determine if the leak is on the City’s side. This could prevent you from paying unnecessary plumbing costs.

UTILITIES

The City of Temple provides residential water, wastewater (sewer), garbage collection and curbside recycling services. Residents also benefit from many other environmental services and programs, such as document shredding, household hazardous waste, recycling events, and more. The City of Temple bills monthly for water, sewer, solid waste, and drainage fees. For questions or to start new services, visit templetx.gov/newservice or call 254.298.5616.

STORMWATER

The City’s Engineering division works to prevent pollution of our creeks and rivers from stormwater, urban runoff and illicit discharges. Contrary to popular belief, water that enters the storm drain flows directly into the nearest creek with no treatment or filtration. For questions or to report illicit discharges, please call the Stormwater Division at 254.298.5625.

GARBAGE & RECYCLING

Residential curbside garbage and recycling collections are managed and performed by the City weekly. Containers must be placed curbside by 7am the day of scheduled collection and must be removed by 8pm the same day. Visit templetx.gov/solidwaste to find your scheduled Garbage, Recycling and Brush/Bulk pick up days.

RECYCLING ACCEPTABLE ITEMS

Paper products, newspapers, magazines, cardboard, pasteboard, cereal & food boxes without liners, detergent boxes, paper towel/toilet paper cores, plastic beverage containers, soda bottles, water bottles, milk jugs, clean food containers, detergent bottles, aluminum, and steel cans. No Styrofoam, glass, yard waste, or plastic bags. Glass bottles and jars may be taken to either of Temple’s two recycling centers. For details and locations, visit templetx.gov/recycling

HELPING HAND PROGRAM

Do you or someone you know need assistance taking garbage and recycling bins to the curb on collection days? You may contact the Solid Waste division at 254.298.5725 to verify eligibility.

YOU CAN GET ONE FREE VISIT TO THE LANDFILL EACH MONTH!

Temple residents receive one free disposal per month of general household waste. Bring your current water utility bill showing your residential garbage rate to use this service This does not include any type of remodeling, demolition, building or roofing materials or anything more than a pickup load.

If you pay your bill online, please visit our Solid Waste office at 2611 E. Ave H to obtain a copy before proceeding to the landfill.

Be sure to bring your identification to show where the waste was generated.

Minimum disposal charge for one load for non-Temple users is $16. All loads must be fully covered and tarped or an additional fee of $20 will be assessed. A safety vest MUST be worn while in the landfill. You may wear your own safety vest, or one may be purchased for $10 +tax.

WATER CONSERVATION

Protecting our water supply is essential to the City of Temple. As is typical in Texas, extreme weather conditions can cause drought conditions and outdoor water use may need to be limited. The City of Temple has four stages of water restrictions that are put in place when necessary:

1. Voluntary Water Conservation

2. Moderate Water Shortage

3. Severe Water Shortage

4. Emergency Water Shortage

Utility customers must comply with the appropriate watering schedules when the City implements drought restrictions. During the high-water usage months of summer, we encourage all citizens to conserve water.

The City of Temple’s wastewater system is specifically designed to dispose of water, toilet paper and body fluids. If other substances and materials are flushed or poured down the toilet or sink, it can block the flow and cause sewage to overflow into your home, lawn, nearby creeks, and anywhere else it can! Temple is a community focused on smart growth and development. The City of Temple Planning & Development Department can assist you from the beginning planning stages of conceiving a development or even a home improvement idea, right through to the permitting process and on to its final completion.

The Planning & Development Department includes the Building Permits & Inspections Team, the Community Vitality Team, and the Planning & Zoning Team. Each team plays a role in ensuring that the City provides professional planning services on urban growth and development to promote quality of place.

INSPECTIONS & PERMITS

The Building Inspections & Permits Team offers a fully on-line application process, which allows for electronic submittal, routing, review, payment, and issuance of approved permits. Contractors and owners can track and manage their permit, upload revisions, and download approved documents in a virtual environment. Inspections can also be managed completely on-line.

The focus of the Community Vitality Team is to foster and maintain collaborative community partnerships among downtown and neighborhood stakeholders, support and preserve the city’s unique history and provide pathways to economic vitality and a sustainable future for all citizens.

Preserving, enhancing and engaging Temple neighborhoods and helping residents access city services and programs ensures Temple is a place you love to call home. Doing so maintains the health, safety and welfare of individuals living, working and doing business within the City.

CODE COMPLIANCE

Code Compliance officers collaborate with other City departments to obtain code compliance on properties throughout the City. They also actively assist in educating the community to raise awareness concerning ordinance violations by personally meeting with property owners, landlords, and other community organizations whenever possible.

TOOL TRAILER

This program is designed to equip volunteer groups with the tools and support they need to host successful neighborhood clean-up events. The Tool Trailer is an enclosed trailer equipped with a variety of tools and supplies essential for large clean-up events. The junk trunk is a dumpster which can be set in conjunction with a clean-up event to facilitate the removal of junk and debris from the neighborhood.

TOOL LIBRARY

With the Tool Library we believe we can build a stronger, safer and more stable community by lending tools to empower our residents to maintain and improve their homes. The Tool Library provides residents with the necessary resources for home repairs and modifications through a no-cost membership. This is a concept similar to that of a book library, but instead of books, we lend tools! By providing accessibility to quality and costly tools, the Tool Library gives all Temple residents the opportunity to repair, enhance, and beautify their homes, allowing them to maintain a sense of independence and dignity. Housing & CommunityDEVELOPMENT

Do you have a neighbor in need? With your help, we can expand our services to provide assistance to more citizens in need throughout the Temple area. Through the Good Neighbor Program, the City of Temple seeks volunteers who are willing and able to help Temple’s elderly and disabled with regular lawn care needs and other minor home improvement projects. Volunteers are invited to use the

lawn care equipment that is available through the Transform Temple Tool Library at no charge. Lawn work is completed on a monthly basis, or as needed. Minor home repair projects might include painting or clearing of brush/debris. Volunteers will receive a Good Neighbor t-shirt and a lot of gratitude from a very thankful citizen!

The Temple Police Department’s mission is “Protecting, Serving, and Working in Partnership with our Community to Prevent, Reduce, and Solve Crime with Integrity, Honor, and Dedication,” as these terms best describe the character of the men and women who are the Temple Police Department. Temple PD employs dedicated professionals, including more than 150 sworn officers and dozens of non-sworn employees. The department provides ongoing engagement within our community and delivers police services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to those who live and work within and visit the City of Temple.

FIRE DEPARTMENT

Temple Fire & Rescue has more than 120 sworn personnel operating out of eight fire stations throughout the City that focus on reducing fire deaths and injuries, providing life saving safety education and ensuring every resident is safe at home, work and at school. The Temple Fire & Rescue Department provides a first responder type of EMS system with paramedics on all fire engines. Transport of patients by ambulance is provided by a private company. Currently the Temple Fire Department averages more than 12,500 requests for service per year.

HEART TO HOME ANIMAL ADOPTION CENTER

Animal Services aims to provide prompt, efficient, and humane enforcement of the animal control ordinance to protect the life, health and welfare of pets and residents of Temple. More than 12,000 acres located on the Leon River. Amenities include boating, fishing, swimming, camping, picnicking, hunting, and lakeside marina.

CHALK RIDGE FALLS PARK

A 3.1 mile heavily trafficked out-and-back trail located near Temple features a waterfall and suspension bridge and is appropriate for all skill levels.

MILLER SPRINGS NATURE CENTER

260-acre scenic natural area located between the Leon River and 110-foot-high bluffs, immediately east of the Belton Lake Dam.

MOTHER NEFF STATE PARK STILLHOUSE HOLLOW LAKE

Along a scenic stretch of the Leon River lies the 259-acre Mother Neff State Park, one of Texas’ oldest state parks. Isabella Neff donated the original six acres for the park in 1921 and it now includes camping, hiking, birding, and picnicking.

Located a quick 15 minute drive from Temple and with more than 58 miles of shoreline, Stillhouse Hollow Lake area features boating, fishing, swimming, scuba diving, camping, picnicking, nature trails, birding, and lakeside marina.

SANTA FE PLAZA

The Santa Fe Plaza was a nearly $40 million redevelopment project for downtown Temple. The area includes a multi-functional plaza and the historic Santa Fe Depot. The space is flanked by the Santa Fe Business Center, housing the Temple Chamber of Commerce and Workforce Solutions offices, and the Temple Independent School District’s administration building. In addition to the beautiful and multifunctional green space, the geyser fountains also double as a splash pad for the kiddos! You will also find a kids playground along Santa Fe Market Trail. Santa Fe Plaza is also home to the Railroad & Heritage Museum, a working Amtrak station, and is a beautiful outdoor venue for special events and concerts held throughout the year.

While many travel to Temple for healthcare services, our residents simply step outside their door for the best healthcare available. Anchored by Baylor Scott & White Healthcare, Temple’s medical district is thriving. Temple is home to the only Level 1 Trauma Center between Dallas and Austin. Temple’s healthcare district also boasts McLane Children’s Hospital, the only children’s hospital between Dallas and Austin, offering highly skilled practitioners in 40 pediatric specialties.
