Tips

Helpful Tips: For limi ng unwanted calories  Lighten up on beverages containing alcohol or sugar; order water with a fresh lemon or lime wedge instead of ordering regular soda or sweet tea.  Avoid fried or greasy foods and foods prepared in cream sauces or gravy; instead, opt for other cooking methods, such as grilled, roasted, or steamed and order sauces and dressings on the side so that they can be used sparingly.  Skip the baked desserts and ice cream; order fresh fruit if it is available.  Pass up the appe zers and save your calories for when the meal is served. For limi ng sodium  Ask what food items can be prepared without added salt or high sodium seasonings. This is not usually an op on for pre‐seasoned foods, but might be possible for fresh cooked vegetables and foods made to order.  Flavor steamed vegetables with lemon juice and add flavor to salads by using balsamic vinegar in place of dressing. For ea ng smaller por ons  Order a “to go” container when you place your order; put aside the amount that you intend to save for another meal.  Split your food order with your dining partner.  Order smaller por ons; look for op ons such as half‐por ons, kid’s meals, or senior meals.  Slow down; if you are a fast eater, try pu ng your fork down be‐ tween bites.

Requirements 1. Maintains a current City of Temple Food Dealer Permit. 2. Enforces City of Temple no-smoking laws within the establishment. 3. Offers at least two entrees and one side item that meet Dine Right nutrition criteria as listed below. One of the following must be submitted for each qualifying entrée or side item: nutrient values per serving or a standardized recipe including number of servings, ingredient amounts, and directions.

The establishment must provide at least two qualifying entrées and one side item as follows: Entrées1,2 containing no more than: 550 calories 18 grams total fat (30% of 550 calories)3 6 grams saturated fat (10% of 550 calories)3 1000 milligrams sodium (600 milligrams sodium for Sodium Smart designation)4 Side items2,5 containing no more than: 250 calories 8 grams total fat (30% of 250 calories)3 3 grams saturated fat (10% of 250 calories)3 300 milligrams sodium4 Notes: 1 Entrées must include a source of lean protein (lean meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, beans, peas, and/or soy products; meatless entrees containing cheese may be substituted) served in combination with a vegetable, fruit, lower fat dairy, or grain product. Deep fried foods will not be considered. If an entrée is served with an additional food item, that item may be counted as a side item. 2

We encourage replacing refined grains with whole grains. Whole grain designation will be given to food items containing a whole grain as the predominant grain. 3 We recommend replacing solid fats with oils when possible and limiting foods that contain synthetic sources of trans fats, such as partially hydrogenated oils. We also suggest offering salad dressing choices that are low-fat or fat-free. 4

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010 recommend reducing daily sodium intake to less than 2,300 milligrams and further reducing intake to 1,500 milligrams among persons who are 51 and older and those of any age who are African American or have hypertension, diabetes, or chronic kidney disease. 5 Side items include any menu items other than entrées or beverages. Although beverages are not included in the criteria, sugar sweetened beverages are discouraged. Deep fried foods will not be considered.

Dine Right

The Temple Mayor’s Council on Physical Fitness invite you to participate in our Dine Right Temple program in order to promote healthier nutrition among people who dine in Temple, Texas. Dine Right Temple was established to recognize food establishments who voluntarily offer nutritional, properly portioned foods in a healthy environment. Dine Right Temple seeks to improve the health of our communities by increasing the availability of nutritional information to consumers and by expanding the range of healthy choices offered. Restaurants are encouraged to participate by offering healthy options that meet the Dine Right criteria. There is no cost to participate. There is a definite need for the Dine Right program in Central Texas restaurants. Based on information obtained from the Department of Health and Human Services, in calendar year 2009, the State of Texas had an obesity rate of 28.7% and another 33% overweight. The increase in obesity is an attribute to several factors including high dietary fat intake; overconsumption and availability of inexpensive, energy-dense foods;

low

intake

of

fruits

and

vegetables;

and

sedentary

lifestyle. Obesity is the second-highest preventable cause of death in the United States second only to tobacco use.

Obesity causes many

different types of preventable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer. Restaurants are encouraged to partner with The Mayor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Scott & White Healthcare to offer healthy choices and potentially improve the health of our community members. If you are interested in participating, please view the back of this book for Dine Right regulations and an application. Or contact the Mayor’s Council
