DEAR FRIENDS

W

Amy Brady

hen you think of Playhouse Square, the instantly recognizable RedCoats immediately come to mind. These outstanding volunteers are the first to greet you when you arrive for a performance. They scan your tickets, hand you a program, help you find your seats and assist our Front of House team in ensuring you have an enjoyable and memorable experience at the theater. Since we reopened in June, our 1400 volunteers have given more than 70,000 hours of their time in service to Playhouse Square. Among this dedicated group, you will find spouses, groups of friends and generations of families volunteering together, along with 318 RedCoats who have been with us for 10 years or longer. We know of many RedCoats who have formed lifelong friendships and a few who have even met their spouses while wearing the iconic red blazers! During National Volunteer Month (April) and beyond, please join me and the entire Board of Trustees and staff in thanking our RedCoat volunteers for all they do for Playhouse Square — and perhaps consider becoming a RedCoat yourself. We welcome friendly new volunteers throughout the season. Enjoy the show!

Sincerely,

Amy Brady, Chair, Board of Trustees

SPOTLIGHT ON Donors

MAKING MEMORIES AT PLAYHOUSE SQUARE: BRENDA AND BARRY HUMMEL “Playhouse Square has been special to us during different seasons of our lives: from entertaining friends, to enjoying family time and now date nights. Having a grandchild with special needs proved to be no problem for the Playhouse Square staff as special arrangements were made to accommodate our sweet Corbin so he could attend a Children’s Theater Series performance. We are also grateful for the opportunities that being a donor provides. The accommodations, friendships and hospitality found at the RJF Presidents’ Club adds to the enjoyment of attending a show. Coming from a small, rural community to experience the beauty and culture of Playhouse Square is a gift that we look forward to enjoying for years to come.” – Brenda and Barry Hummel

For more information about being a donor visit playhousesquare.org/support

SUPPORT OUR DAZZLE AWARDS STUDENTS!

playhousesquare.org

Playhouse Square is grateful for Brenda and Barry’s continued generous support and we wish them and their family many more years of memories!

The 2022 Playhouse Square Dazzle Awards program, presented by Pat & John Chapman, recognizes excellence in Northeast Ohio high school musical theater students. The program emphasizes helping students build confidence and showcase their talents, while having the opportunity to learn from Broadway industry experts. The goal is to raise $25,000 by June 30 to continue to support these students and continue to reward their talent and hard work. An additional generous contribution will be made by long-time Trustee John Chapman and his wife Pat, who are committed to helping to provide inspiring and engaging opportunities through the arts.

We hope you will join us to help these students excel in the arts!

erhaps like you, as I think about To Kill A Mockingbird, I immediately recall my first encounter with the work — the stark and powerful 1962 black and white movie. Atticus Finch was my fantasy father. Calpurnia was the loving enforcer. And Boo Radley scared me! However, it was Scout’s opened-hearted questions on the perplexing behavior of the adults surrounding her that sparked something inside of me. As our songbird in the story, she is given the freedom to fly above the fray, spreading seeds of inspiration while cross-pollinating the ecosystem of rural Maycomb, Alabama. Given this small town 1930s setting, her journey is measured not by miles but rather the distance of the social inequities. My ownership in the story was such that when I took my allowance money to purchase the paperback, it was as though I had discovered my new BFF. After many readings, the tattered and worn cover was a testament to my affection for Harper Lee’s novel and its pint-sized narrator. I was all in! However, upon learning that Aaron Sorkin was going adapt my story for Broadway, admittedly I was a bit concerned. Would this be akin with attempts to “improve” mom’s prized Thanksgiving dressing or any other savory dish that is deeply emblazoned in my memory? Maybe Aaron Sorkin could write The West Wing and The Social Network, but… All of those concerns dissipated after reading the script, having the opportunity to speak with Aaron and ultimately seeing the play on Broadway. This production is a masterful adaptation of the beloved novel that compels us to reach to a higher level of thinking as it gives voice to some previously muted characters. Rather than simply being a member of an audience, we are all summoned to witness an unjust trial. Like a fastidious sculptor, Aaron Sorkin’s writing carefully slices through the oppressive air of the era of the Great Depression. Characters are infused with a vocabulary that is sprinkled with contemporary colloquialisms, offering an immediacy and relevance to the dialogue. Tom Robinson has a voice, Calpurnia is empowered and Atticus has vulnerabilities. Here in Cleveland, we have the joy of welcoming two special actors, along with their excellent cast. Richard Thomas has been previously seen on our stages as Juror Eight in Twelve Angry Men and Erik Blake in The Humans. He now dons the well-pressed suit of southern style and wisdom as Atticus Finch. Mary Badham, who played the innocent 6-year-old Scout in the film, has shifted to the antagonistic Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose. A neighbor of the Finches’, Mrs. Dubose sits ready to spew her venomous beliefs on any passerby on any subject. She is a defiant racist. Adding to the flow of the storytelling is Adam Guettel’s score. His music moves us from scene to scene, transitioning from the comfort of the Finches’ front porch to the drama of the courtroom with the grace of a ballet. Bart Sher’s directing of this piece is exceptional. His vision for casting adults in the roles of Scout, Jem and Dill is truly visionary. The authenticity of these three actors as children is impressive, even as they glide from being adults recalling this youthful chapter of their lives, back to becoming a trio of cubs romping about Macomb looking for their daily adventure. For me, their transformation beckons us to do better — that we adults all might benefit from shedding the cumulative weight of our biases and listening to the hearts of the 6-year-old version of ourselves. It is an aspect of our personality that we should hope to never lose.

Enjoy,
