WELCOME

MAYOR'S WELCOME MESSAGE

As summer comes to a close and we anticipate fall, I’m excited about the many great things happening in our city – especially at our parks and community centers. Parks and Recreation plays such a vital role in creating a strong sense of place and enhancing the quality of life for our residents, whether it’s through beautiful parks, interactive playgrounds, youth sports, after school programs, and so much more.

I love Pensacola in every season, but fall is always a special time for our city, with no shortage of activities for residents of all ages to enjoy.

We’ve had a busy summer, installing new playgrounds at Belvedere Park, Eastgate Park, Fairchild Park, Pintado Park, and Sanders Beach Park, along with the new Kiwanis Park Sensory Musical Garden. Several other amenities were also completed this year, including the Blake Doyle Community Skatepark, new docks at the Bayou Texar Boat Ramp, the new Pensacola Bay Pier/day use marina at Community Maritime Park, and a new pool house/restrooms at Cecil T. Hunter Pool.

We also have several improvement projects planned for our parks, including new hard courts at Roger Scott Tennis Center coming in early 2024, a new bathhouse/restrooms at Roger Scott Pool coming in summer 2024, and Bruce Beach Phase 1 and 2 coming in 2024, just to name a few. The city was also recently awarded significant grant funding from the state for several projects, including $25 million for the development of Hollice T. Williams Stormwater Park and $5.5. million to rebuild the Fricker Center social hall and complete infrastructure hardening.

We are continuing to work diligently to prioritize and improve maintenance of city parks and facilities, investing heavily in this year’s budget to ensure we are keeping our parks and community centers in top shape for you. Parks and Recreation offers several after school programs to local youth, which provide an engaging and fun environment for K-5 students. This year, the city was awarded an approximately $1.7 million grant from the Escambia Children’s Trust, which will allow us to offer our after school programs at no cost to children whose families qualify for free and reduced lunch. This is incredibly important to ensure equal access for low-income families, while increasing the number of children enrolled in quality after school programming.

I hope you’ll take a moment to explore our fall activity guide and check out some of the many programs, team sports, activities and events offered through Parks and Recreation. I’m confident that you’ll find something for all ages.

We are proud to have 93 parks and greenspaces in the City of Pensacola for our citizens and visitors to enjoy, along with 10 community resource centers. We know how vital these amenities are to our residents, and we truly take pride in working hard to maintain and improve them for you.

As your Mayor, I will continue to work with City Council, our incredible Parks and Recreation team, and you –our citizens – to make Pensacola the best it can possibly be.

Wishing you and your families a wonderful and active fall season here in our vibrant, beautiful city.

Sincerely,

MAYOR & CITY COUNCIL

REMEMBERING MICHAEL MIMS

The City of Pensacola Parks and Recreation Department mourns the loss of our respected area manager, colleague, community leader, coach and friend, Michael Mims.

As the Recreation Supervisor of Fricker Resource Center, Michael began his tenure with the city in 2017 and quickly became a tremendous asset through his dedicated service and civic engagement that will benefit staff and community members for years to come. Michael’s tenacity for development and youth excellence extended beyond Fricker’s walls through the implementation of the Alpha Elite Youth Development Program, a coaching and mentorship program consisting of teams and leagues that promote both athleticism and scholarship for students in a variety of interests including basketball, t-ball and baseball, track and field, and academic competition.

In his own words, Michael’s vision “to leverage existing community resources while introducing new concepts and ideas regarding mentoring and youth development,” came to light every season upon

extending an invitation to participate to a new cohort of students ages 4 and up. The 2023 Alpha Elite Youth Basketball League welcomed a total of 36 teams and 372 players throughout the Greater Pensacola region. Michael’s passion for his favorite sport, track and field, has fueled the talents of students who are a part of The Gulf Coast Running Club (a.k.a. the G.O.A.T. Farm “Greatest of All Time”), a team of high school track and cross-country runners who train together during the off season. As one of the lead coaches, Coach Mims helped The G.O.A.T. Farm win national awards in the AAU National CrossCountry Championship, place first in the AAU National CrossCountry Regional Championship and qualify to participate in the Junior Olympics.

The City of Pensacola Parks and Recreation Department is committed to building upon the legacy Michael Mims made during his lifetime. He will be dearly missed.
