MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR WELCOME

Here at Parks and Recreation, it’s always a great time to get out and play, especially during the spring and summer!

We love this time of the year. It’s the season everyone ventures out most to enjoy what we offer! Whether it’s unveiling a new playground for families to savor those precious extra hours of sunlight or helping our youth create incredible memories at summer camp, we’re here to serve you.

Hosting friends and family? Plan for a day outdoors! Practice your long drive and escape the sun under a mobile canopy at Osceola Golf Course. Rent affordable outdoor recreation equipment at the Bayview Outdoor Pursuits Center to enjoy our area’s beautiful greenspaces and estuaries. Don’t forget our Blues Angel Music Blues on the Bay concert series! This special event draws a fantastic crowd and brings together our region’s best musical talent all spring and summer for free! Enjoying live music next to a cool breeze by the bay as the sun sets is the perfect close to a weekend in Pensacola.

We encourage you to explore our musical sensory garden at Kiwanis Park. This new musical garden provides inclusive and interactive play for children of all ages and abilities. Furry friends don’t have to miss out on the fun. Kiwanis also has a dog park! When visiting our parks, please ensure your pet remains leashed unless inside a dog park facility.

Parks and Recreation is growing, and we appreciate you joining us for the exciting journey. Be on the lookout for announcements on our website this summer for the grand opening of our newly remodeled Cecil T. Hunter swimming pool facility and the brand-new Blake Doyle Skatepark!

We wish you a great season and hope you enjoy exploring the programs and events in this edition of our activity guide, The Playbook!

PENSACULTURE SPOTLIGHT

MEET YOUR NEW CULTURAL AFFAIRS COORDINATOR SYDNEY ROBINSON

In November of 2022, Parks and Recreation welcomed a new member to our team, Sydney Robinson, the city’s first Cultural Affairs Coordinator!

Sydney is a Pensacola-Milton native and previously served more than three years as the director of Gallery Night Pensacola.

Working with other Parks and Recreation folks including the Special Events Supervisor and Superintendent of Park Projects and Administration, our Cultural Affairs program is creating new and exciting art and culture opportunities for city residents.

From more public murals around town to artistic educational opportunities at our resource centers; from highlighting cultural events like Juneteenth to applying for public art grants – we are so excited about what this program will achieve!

Stay tuned for updates in completed projects in Pensacola Parks in the coming months.

CELEBRATE NEW PUBLIC ART IN PENSACOLA

On Friday, January 27 the City of Pensacola Parks and Recreation Department hosted a public art unveiling ceremony to celebrate the installation of the Chute Des Cubes sculpture at Admiral Mason Park.

Designed by Quebec artist Marc Plamondon, Chute Des Cubes is an aluminum sculpture featuring three stone white cubes balanced to form one monolithic outdoor structure. Strongly influenced by American minimalist art, Plamondon’s playful, abstract sculptures explore positive and negative space. At night the sides of the cubes appear as free-floating diamonds.

The Chute Des Cubes sculpture was donated to the city by resident Holly Benson.

Admiral Mason Park is located at 200 S. 9th Ave. in Pensacola.
