MAYOR & CITY COUNCIL Mayor D.C. Reeves Casey Jones, Council President, District 3
WELCOME
Jared Moore, Council Vice President, District 4 Jennifer Brahier, Council Member, District 1 Charles Bare, Council Member, District 2
MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR It’s the most wonderful time of the year and believe it or not, 2024 soon awaits! Before we end the year, I would like to thank you all for your continued interest and support in our city parks and programs. Together we’ve built bonds, strengthened our endurance and created cherished memories. We have much to be excited about in the year ahead for Pensacola. We’ve appointed a new Parks and Recreation Director, Ben Heistein, who I am confident will lead this talented division to new heights — bringing more amenities and improvements for you all to enjoy. Under his leadership, we will see the completion of two tremendous capital improvement projects, set to be complete by mid-2024 at Bruce Beach Nature Preserve and the Roger Scott Tennis Center. In the meantime, do keep an eye out for registration opening soon for spring sports including Bill Bond baseball, youth soccer, and more! If you are hosting a loved one this holiday who has an affinity for pickleball, the fastest growing sport in America, be sure to take them out to Armstrong Park! We installed three new pickleball courts this past October for park visitors to enjoy on a first-come, first served basis during park hours. Any avid skaters in the family? Bring them out to Blake Doyle Skatepark, a groundbreaking project we completed this past summer which includes approximately 25,000 square feet of skateable surface area that will be sure to entertain skaters of all ages and skill levels. For our little ones who prefer to march to the beat of their own drum, we encourage you to explore our musical sensory garden at Kiwanis Park. Installed this past spring, the park is a space that provides inclusive and interactive play opportunities for children of all ages and abilities to create and explore. Visitors will find a variety of outdoor instruments, including harmonic chimes and percussions! You won’t have to leave your furry family members at home as Kiwanis is also home to one of our five city dog parks. Not only are city parks a great playground for recreation, but many also maintain Pensacola’s deep and rich history including Bayview Park — which now serves as a historic land marker to memorialize the nearly 30 Native American women and children who lost their lives during the Battle and Massacre at Bayou Texar in 1818. The event was a pivotal point at the closing of the First Seminole War, and we are grateful to recognize the area as a Florida heritage site. I wish you all a happy and prosperous new year and am excited for all that is ahead for the beautiful City of Pensacola. I look forward to continuing to serve you in the coming year and beyond, and I hope that you continue to fulfill our parks and recreation motto to “Get Out and Play!” Sincerely, Mayor D.C. Reeves

MEET THE DIRECTOR
It is an honor to be appointed to lead the City of Pensacola Parks and Recreation Department! I hope to enhance resident and visitor experience at city parks and facilities, while propelling the mayor’s vision for a greater and higher quality of life in the City of Pensacola. We have an amazing team of passionate and talented individuals working hard to offer recreation programs and maintain the green spaces that you enjoy. Parks and Recreation, including the professionals who make it happen, are essential to the health and wellness of the community. It has been proven that access to indoor and outdoor recreation correlates with greater physical activity, increased educational opportunities for youth, and improved mental well-being. Parks are also a driver of economic activity by increasing adjacent property values and a community's attractiveness to employers and home buyers. Perhaps most importantly, parks are a place to connect with nature and each other. It is my commitment to sustain our parks system by driving re-investment in our parks and facilities through updating aging infrastructure, enhancing our green spaces, and ensuring residents have access to recreation. I want to thank
you for participating in our programs and using our parks and facilities. Now, let's “Get Out and Play!" Heistein recently served as Parks Superintendent for the City of Dallas Parks and Recreation Department where he was responsible for the management and daily operations of 200 parks and 91 miles of trails. While in the role, Heistein also managed a staff of 160 employees and administered an annual operating and maintenance budget of more than $38 million. Prior to his position with the City of Dallas, Heistein served as Assistant Parks & Community Services Director for the City of Watsonville, California. In addition to managing parks, he has also developed and managed youth and adult recreation programs, dog parks, skate parks, splash pads, capital improvement projects and directed city street tree programs. Heistein earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of California at Santa Cruz. He is a National Recreation & Parks Association Certified Parks & Recreation Professional and an International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist. playpensacola.com | 5
