ell guy’s it has been a good biking season for the club runs and ride-outs with plenty of dry conditions and some of us even managed to get away for some warmer continental riding which is all part of the fun. As the Monday evening ride-outs come to a close big thank you to all the marshals who have yet again turned up for duty no matter the weather and got on with the task at hand. On a personal note I would like to thank all the members of the PMCC who have supported Plymouth Bike Night in it’s first year and despite the occasional damp Thursday evening you have all helped to raise £3982.47 in support of the Help for Heroes charity. Thanks again to all Pete Batten

Autumn Breakfast Run - Sunday 17th October ‘10 The message that the depart time from the Novotel would be at 0930am was well remembered by 23 hungry bikes thanks to Denis Callicott e-mails. We all set off on time lead by Roy and Pat in front, with Ritch taking up the rear and with a lovely sunny start to the day no-one was in a hurry. We departed the Novotel at 0930 right on the schedule we soon managed to clear the Tamar Bridge and Saltash tunnel in one group thanks to some well timed lane changes by the riding group and some considerate Sunday morning car drivers. Ritch as tail-end marshal drew the short straw and had to drop back a few times to cover marshal duty for a 125 but they both caught up as we made the turn of the A38 at Liskeard for the run to Callington. We soon cleared Callington and made the down hill run to Gunnislake and onto Tavistock and the uphill climb to Princetown. The morning sunshine over Dartmoor gave us all a great reason to be out on the bikes on such a lovely day. The group soon cleared the moors and before we new it we were on the A38 heading back towards Plymouth and the turn for Wrangaton. It was strange not to give it wellie down Wrangaton straight, for this time we turn left into the entrance of the old navy depot. The café was soon going flat out doing big breakfast’s for us all and even a few extra club members turned up. Thanks to Roy & Pat for organising a great day out. PLYMOUTH MOTORCYCLE CLUB - CHARITY SUPPORT GUIDELINES Nomination to support a charity All club supported registered charities (must be registered and not for a named person) are to be proposed annually at the AGM. Any club member proposing a charity at the AGM must have been a member of the club for the past 12 months and should give a brief overview to the membership present as to why their proposed charity event should be supported by the members. All charity nominations will be reviewed at the next available committee meeting. Executive Committee Charity selection Each charity proposed at an AGM will be reviewed by the executive committee at the next available committee meeting for final selection and approval of support of the club for that calendar year. The selected/non-selected charities and the AGM proposing club member will be informed in writing of the decision of the committee. The committee is empowered to nominate a proven club supported charity event from the previous club calendar year. Club supported charity event planning 1. A flyer about the charity event should be produced and reviewed by the committee no less than three (3) months prior to the date of the charity event, so as to give time for it to be advertised to club members and the public. 2. The facilities and local resources at the final destination need to be discussed by the committee at least two (2) months prior to the date of the charity event. 3. A copy of the proposed ride route should be given to the club Rideout Coordinator / Safety Officer at least (1) month prior to the charity event, to give them time to check the safety of the route and make any necessary changes. 4. The charity should be preferably a local one, with representatives who will be willing to assist PMCC with the collection of monies/ donations during the event, If a raffle is to accompany the ride the organiser would need to supply the prizes and sell raffle tickets on the day. All monies from the donations/raffle would be passed to the PMCC Club treasurer on the day to be counted and checked with the charity representative and presented to the charity at a club meeting as soon as possible after the event. 5. If food is to be supplied by the club representatives of the charity would be expected to help with set up, serving and clearing up afterwards. Hints and Tips Your short presentation to the AGM (approx 5 minutes) should include some history of the charity and reasons why you support it and why we should. Details you should know beforehand. Is it a local charity? When will it take place? Where will it start, go and finish? Do you have support from the charity as helpers?
PLYMOUTH MOTORCYCLE CLUB - CHARITY SUPPORT GUIDELINES
MESSAGES FROM THE CHAIR Hi Guy’s and Girls, By the time you read this we should have finished our 2010 ride-out programme. This year we have varied the ride destinations which we hope you have enjoyed. The ride numbers are slightly up this year (numbers and marshal activity will be in the AGM packs released mid December). We always welcome your comments on rides or if you have destination that you have in mind please let us know and we will try to put this in place. I would like to thank all the Marshals for their hard work, as well as Monday nights a lot of the Marshals go out on a Thursday on Recce rides to ensure the route is safe for the club runs. This is double the expense and in this current climate this just shows the measure of generosity and good will of the marshals. This year we have taken on more marshals, the idea being the more marshals the better as a lot more route marshals were used. I would like to say thanks to these guys. Also the following need a special thanks Pete Tibbins for helping me with training and re-writing all the route cards in the closed season, Roy Pike for his help with training, Trevor Pridham for sorting out the route Marshals on Monday’s and to Ken Bush and Denis Callicott for all their general help on the ride outs. If I have forgotten anyone I apologise. Finally I would like to say thanks to you the riders for your continued support, also the donations you give on Monday nights are gratefully received and go towards first aid training, Hi-viz jackets and radio equipment and whatever is left over goes in the pot to keep membership fees down. As a way of thanks we provide a small buffet on the last Monday of the summer ride outs, to show our appreciation. Thank You, Ritch Bounds .............................................................................................................. News Flash! Buy without trying? – Not for me! – But it could cost you! So – you feel like changing your machine for a newer , faster or larger capacity model and go down to your local dealer to see what’s on offer – and there it is – your dream bike. You’ve never ridden one before – o.k – it’s a Hyabusa, it’ll make a change from riding the CB400 and it’s just what you think you want. So – you sit on it going brrrrm brrrm – play with the switches – and then sign on the dotted line, and pay your money, looking forward to the day when you’ll collect it and go out for your first ride ever on this model as its new owner. Have I missed something out? Oh yes –silly me - you might want to take it for a test ride first. It might be entirely unsuitable for your riding style and comfort – so you ask your dealer if you can take out a demo bike out, he says “yes” and on producing your licence – you sign a little bit of paper and off you go.- Let me state here that after doing some research on the internet – you are lucky that you can have a ride at all, and if you were a dealer, would you let just anyone go out on a Ducati that costs 15 grand? Now – here’s a little scenario and it does happen! You’re doing fine, but then – bollocks! - you need to stop to get petrol because that flaming yellow fuel level light is flashing at you, and you want to at least do a few miles to test it properly. So, you pull into the petrol station thinking “Why do I have to put petrol in this thing – they want me to buy it don’t they?” And then – ooops – you,ve dropped it! Panic!!! (Have you ever noticed how quick you can pick up a bike sometimes) – Oh well, it’s only a bit of fairing damage - --and a bent footpeg – and a broken lever –and a flasher. – never mind - it’s a demo bike – they’ll soon fix that! You get back to the dealer – tell him of your little accident and he checks out the bike – then with a sharp intake of breath announces that you’ll have to pay him the insurance excess that you signed for when you took the bike out your free ride could cost you £500 / £1,000 (dealers excesses vary) ! “Wow – didn’t realise that! “- is the answer I’ve had from some of the guys I’ve talked to about it. “ I know” you think –“ I’ll phone my insurance company and get them to pay for it – I’m fully comp.- and it says I can ride any other bike”. – Wrong!! I’ve asked my insurance - Your fully comp cover is for third party only when riding a bike that doesn’t belong to you.....which means that you are insured to ride any bike......etc , but if you are on your own ,you are liable for the damage to the bike you are riding. So- now you’re stuffed –you have to pay out that money - and you can’t afford the new bike – gutted or what! O.k , you say – I know all this already, - good - but surprisingly, some don’t –– anyway here is the point of this article – If you take a demo out from your dealer – make sure you know what you are signing for on that little form. They should point out clearly how much the excess is before you sign, and different dealers vary. I actually saw a report of an excess of £1600 for a Ducati and they swipe your card before you go out. Other option – buy before you try – maybe make a deal with the salesman that you can take it back if you don’t like it- yeah - right!! Denis.
