E-Way Bill BrightEning thE prospEcts for BrandEd products

Editorial

Pragat Dvivedi, Founder Editor

Dealers will have to adopt formal billing culture with good banking practices to grow and expand further. To succeed at such times, the advice to distributors and big dealers is to pour capital in business, be on toes to expand your network and take products from likeminded manufacturers and organised players.

F

inally E-way bill on interstate transportation of goods is mandatory. Above Rs 50,000 dispatches will have to log in for E-way bill and hence the era of data matching and catching the evasion masters will be easier. The whole process of “GST & E-way bill” will be complete, there will be interstate, intrastate and other inbound form provisions. “If you miss the bus now, you may never reach your destination.” The implementation of E-way bill is set to change the working and selling proposition in Plywood, Laminate and whole interior material sector. The importance of being a branded or organised company will be realised with each passing year from now onwards. With E-way bill impact, the gap between brand and non-brand products will be narrow hence dealers will prefer buying from better equipped and active manufacturers. It is certain that those who were selling without bill will not find this trade easy any more. They have to add taxes and hence there will be relief to branded and organised people from May 2018 onwards. The raw material input cost has gone up for each product. Timber prices have gone up by 30% whereas face veneer, formaldehyde, phenol, pine or fuel (petrol, diesel) have shot up, hence impacting a price rise in tune to 6-7 % (till writing it ) hence Plywood, PB, MDF producers will need market support. The laminate producers have recorded price rise in base paper, phenol, melamine and transport cost hence a pressure on increasing price is inevitable and sooner or later the price increase will have to be passed on. The biggest impact going to trouble small players is for staff salaries and sales expenses to remain relevant in present market. With time, as companies will add up taxation cost and various other expenses, the net price of finished material will climb up. And this is exactly why during last 1 year; stock price of every organised brand has appreciated. Dealers will have to adopt formal billing culture with good banking practices to grow and expand further. To succeed at such times, the advice to distributors and big dealers is to pour capital in business, be on toes to expand your network and take products from likeminded manufacturers and organised players. If you miss the bus at this moment, you might never reach your destination. GST & E-way bill combined with state forms will certainly push the wood panel trade to be in a transformed business environment by 2020. Best Wishes

Decorative veneers DemanD can grow with right awareness

apni baat

Rajiv Parashar, Editor

24

If decorative veneer producing companies wish to expand natural veneer usages with growing disposal income of next generation users, they must prepare a guideline for quality and range of suitable coatings with specific veneers. They must educate retailers and influencers about appropriate coating options and its benefit for customers.

D

ecorative Natural Veneers are exotic, adds beauty to interiors, eco-friendly because it saves timber and offer uniqueness. There is no alternative to decorative veneer despite many new products for interior surface decor, because for some reason veneer lovers don’t buy them. The demand has been on a positive growth during last decade, but if growing number of HNI’s, luxury home buyers are compared with veneer growth then decorative veneers consumption is not matching to it. Why it so? The recent survey concluded among Architects/Interior designers/Carpenters/ Retailers/ Influencers on ‘usage and benefit of decorative veneers’, a surprising note appears on this segment. It is found that 85 % influencers are not aware about the actual application of decorative veneers such as, which species are suitable for which applications, which polish/coating is required for which kind of veneers? Why this veneer for drawing rooms, why this veneer for bedrooms? Why this veneer for wardrobe/shutters? Why this veneer for dining table/study table/office table, etc? The biggest reason appeared after the survey that people are afraid of its time taking and tiring polishing process. Lack of awareness on points like ‘What are the advantages or dis-advantages of using matt or gloss finish coating for specific usages’ or ‘which coatings are suitable for which area’ is also adding to problems. Which are the companies that are offering suitable kind of coatings, and what are actual methods of applying coatings? Entire processes of buying and applying veneers are based on emotion of influencers and customers, without rational act. It is a fact that Coating/Polishing are important ingredient of decorative veneers but it is also a fact that Indian veneer producers are ignorant to recommending users about the suitable varieties and kinds of coatings. There are no guidelines for polish personnel for applying material on veneers. If decorative veneer producing companies wish to expand natural veneer usages with growing disposal income of next generation users, they must prepare a guideline for quality and range of suitable coatings with specific veneers. They must educate retailers and influencers about appropriate coating options and its benefit for customers. If they success to control and guide the actual coatings quality, it is sure that its market will expand many times, and users feel proud of using it. Now, come to this April, 2018 issue, which has featured the reports on new launches, product showcases and enthusiasm of industry and trade leaders during Indiawood and D-cube exhibitions. The detail coverage of ILMA’s International conference is also there. The interaction with Directors of Royal Crown Laminates, Mr. Manish Patel and Mr. Shiv Patel is worth reading for HPL industry and trade. Maintaining Ply Reporter’s culture, this issue has also a bunch of exclusive industry and trade reports, which you never find at any web-search sites and portals. Entire news reports must help the readers to plan for this financial year. Wishing you all a prosperous and successful Financial Year 2018-19 ! .

NEWS WATCH

ts beginning of financial Year 2018-19 and the prediction made by The Ply Reporter coming close to reality. The timber prices have begun rising suddenly which is in fact earlier than estimated. After March 15th, the poplar timber prices have been registering a steady rise and so is the path in Safeda. The plywood mills have not been ready for this sudden rise in timber prices hence there are reports of association meetings in every plywood manufacturing cluster.

28

The prices of timber are said to be growing in every region be it UP East, UP West, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan or Delhi-NCR region. The panic buying of plantation logs is also heard in few areas but there are no such reports of scarcity. At present polar logs have witnessed a jump of Rs 175 per quintal in poplar and Rs 50-60 in case of eucalyptus thus, increasing the core veneer cost by 15 percent. Following the sudden rise, producers have started recalculating the cost of other raw materials and timber. There is rise in price of formaldehyde by 20 percent, Gurjan face veneer up by 20 percent, Phenol by 10 percent and a significant rise of 40 % in wood fuel prices. The Labor cost has also gone sharply up hence forcing producers to increase prices. The time of summer witness exodus of labours to their native places which will make a drop-in plywood supply and rise in finished goods prices. The Ply Reporter estimate that by May 2018, the plywood factories will be forced to announce a price rise by almost Rs 3.50 to Rs 4.00 per square foot in 18mm plywood. It is time for distributors to begin preparing for a price increase in coming weeks.
