The target and timeline driven allotted budget for infrastructure, Delhi- Mumbai connect, freight corridors, extension of exemptions in budget housing, high spent on clean drinking water and increased spending on divestment and offering exemption for start-ups are direct benefits that will have immediate positive impact on businesses.
The budget of 2020 offered a fresh perspective to see things in the changing economic scenario for several sectors. Entrepreneurs of today understand that the restructuring and reforms are meant for the long term goal. There is nothing short term and we cannot expect any booster dose from the government. However, the positive impact on real estate with the pre-budget sanction of Rs 25000 crore by government for completion of 1600 stalled projects and extension of exemptions for affordable housing during budget promises to provide some kinetic energy to the snail paced sector. The restructuring in income slabs, offering flat income tax slabs, reduced hassles in tax filing and bringing transparency through e-assessment is a direct and immediate change. All these are expected to boost consumption and increase demand for building materials. The increase of import duty on furniture items are straightaway connected to Indian wood panel industry and trade because it will enable increased consumption of raw materials here in Indian furniture making activities. We estimate a significant 8-10% increase in domestic consumption alone with respect to wood panels and decorative surface material demand. If global economy is supportive & positive, trade wizards are of firm belief that India should be on the cusp of growth and rebound from here on. The present market scenario is seemingly better and looks promising. Demand for plywood, Film faced plywood, decorative laminates and PB, MDF, are in better flow than last two quarters. The sales in decorative veneers and highlighters have seen a flat line that may be due to steep pressure on consumers from the ongoing economic slowdown. The panel manufacturing industry and the wholesale community has been under tremendous stress since a couple of years but there is a build-up of optimism for 2020. The raw material prices have eased a little, and the banks have eased up financing, supported by government fund to stalled projects. Growth is expected in industrial manufacturing and demand of commercial and warehousing spaces is indicating better prospects in the recent future. Although 3-4 veneer manufacturing brands have endorsed ‘Pre-Polished’ decorative veneer but major chunk of manufacturers are not daring. Decorative veneer is a natural product with exotic looks and feel. It saves lots of timber and natural resources because it is sourced from matured sustainable timber and forest. The growth in sales of decorative veneer is driven by innovation in manufacturing, display at showrooms, new launches, creativity by influencers, dare to keep stocks by retailers and dealers, higher disposable income, and HNI’s remittance to India. All these stakeholders are making maximum effort despite present slowdown period to maintain their share, even by lowering profit margins to drastic low. There are significant huge drop registered in prices of Teak, Walnut etc range to maintain the sales tally. Now, reports find that the root cause in stagnant growth of veneers that is largely considered with time taken in polishing and hassles during finishing and coating. As a part of magazines like Ply Reporter, Surfaces Reporter and Furniture Design & Technology, we keep meeting retailers, showrooms owners, specifiers, interior designers, contractors, furniture makers, etc and keep eagle eyes to absorb the change in behavior of customers and influencers. We believe that Decorative Veneer Demand could grow only if customers core issues like sanding, labor cost, time spent are reduced if dealers start promoting Pre-sanded, Pre base coat-sanded- lacquered decorative veneer to customers. With advent of new finishing line tools and machines, veneer producing factories are in much stronger position today to offer Pre-sanded, pre-finished or “final coat ready” decorative veneer sheets. This step may sound ‘not possible’ for people today but if adopted it can be a great solution and reduce the biggest application ache, saving time and money. Pre-polished or semi polished or with pre- sealer coat will save lot of money for applying veneer. This way veneers will become affordable for users, and will help driving demand. he coronavirus epidemic has impacted industrial sectors across products including wood panel, decorative and related raw materials for surfacing needs. The entire industry and trade transactions and transport is expected to be hit; which is certainly going to jeopardise many companiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; supply chain and businesses. The related machinery, raw material and equipments coming from China is feeling a great hit and will derail or delay many of the businesses that are directly related. The economic implications of coronavirus are increasingly affecting the networks. The laminate and highlighter trade related people say, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s now worrying. If Chinese factories closure continues in industrialized provinces after February 2nd weeks onwards, many of the PVC laminate, decorative laminate, floorings, PVC board additives, Aluminium composite sheet coils and wood panel industry related machineries like peeling, core jointer, composers, sanding etc are going to be hit. Various furniture manufacturing companies who depend upon imports from China for various items including hardware, parts, handles, channels, etc are also getting affected. According to reports from people, Hong Kong is already witnessing the heat and business damage from the coronavirus fallout. We have never witnessed any such incident in recent past history post economic boom and global business network era as this time, world economy is staring to China is today due to coronavirus-epidemic deaths there. Chinese economy is somewhere second in size to the US, but it is part of so many supply chains coming from paper products, stationary, clips, toys, pens, cars to iPhones. Each one of them be it an electrical appliance company or a leather exporter in Agra, who anticipated that getting supplies moulds are uncertain. A large number of distributors of chemicals and papers; speciality paper are already experiencing shortages of supply from China. The owner of a mid-sized furniture showroom from Kirti Nagar said she had been communicated by the furniture supplier in Foshan, Guangdong that the shipment, what the client is expecting in a few weeks is certain to be delayed. There is an agreement among importers and suppliers in India that coronavirus impact is looming big on decorative surfaces, charcoal panels, wall papers, wood veneers, furniture, hardware, PVC and paper related businesses. If the situation improves in February then also, it will take another two months to come to normalcy else there is no certainty till some breakthrough is achieved. There are hopes from rise in temperature during March that will help to curb and destroy the virus till then there will be significant impact. Till writing this news, several Chinese companies who visit during Indiawood exhibition to Bangalore and launch new range of products and machineries for Indian market have cancelled their participation. The cancellation means lesser level of participation of companies and lesser numbers in business transaction in terms of materials and machines from China. India wood panel decorative industry is already witnessing the impact of Coronavirus, even if India is taking extreme majors to prevent its spread in the country.

How do you serve Indian wooden sector? Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been working for the last ten years to help furniture exporters establish transparent wood supply chains linked to responsible forestry operations in India. Our member companies, sourcing furniture in Vietnam and India, were the first to achieve this and inspired many other companies in the region to take the same approach. We continue to partner with companies to source wood products responsibly. We support community-based projects to improve timber production and gain access to international markets. We help retailers to comply with the European Timber Regulation (EUTR) and other global market compliances. The demand for wooden products is growing with each passing day, putting the extra burden of our forests and farmlands. It's reasonable to understand if we keep taking out of nature without giving it back, very soon we'll finish our reserves and reach the stage of a crisis. That will be a massive dent to the wood fed industries. We know what happened with "Sheesham" when the trade restrictions were imposed. We need to put collective efforts to address the issues to the core Today, the International buyers are putting much emphasising on traceability, legality, and sustainability of the imported wooden goods arriving in their respective countries. And Indian exporters are happy to full fill these regulatory obligations to increase their sales.
