LOVE OR HATE, INDIA IS GREAT

EDITORIAL

Pragat Dvivedi, Founder Editor

Indian market propositions offer plenty of avenues who understand the essence of Indian consumers, who need best quality but with a moderate price. Indian consumers love brands but equally seek personal touch and importance over too much of professionalism. The emerging readymade furniture companies have been largely a victim of too much demand from customers

Despite of a weak and dull 2018, 2019 in a row, business houses and analyst are not yet giving up hope for a turnaround in 2020. Post budget 2020, there have been some hits and misses but the hopes have become stronger for wood panel industry. Despite of weak macro data’s across business leaders are hopeful, because they all are certain on one thing, INDIA HAS TREMENDOUS POTENTIAL. Deep Inside, we all know as well that ‘India is a fast-growing economy with increased spending and better lifestyle seeking generation. People are more than ready to buy good quality, better finished furniture today. We all know that buying capacity of people is likely to increase in the years to come and this will have a positive impact on furniture and hardware industry. It will directly add to demand for wood panel and other new composite material in India. With a huge 19% human population on planet earth, India is one of the most favored, fast emerging and consumption driven economy where Price and Trust, both matters. India has unique demography where people are price conscious, brand minded and aspiring to upgrade. The wood panel industry in combination with growing readymade furniture seeking millennials, are drafting a unique market which is not US or exactly China, neither Europe nor like any Asian or middle east country. India is diverse in preferences and purchase patterns, but very huge in market size and consumption. India is a market where you “love to be, but hate the fears of failure and cluttered competition.” Indian ‘wood, panel and furniture market’ is still a testing and trial ground for many of the international wood machinery and furniture selling companies. India is also a bizarre for many of the building materials and interior product selling companies because they come with great hopes and attain great success but there are many who pack up with memories that suck. Indian market propositions offer plenty of avenues who understand the essence of Indian consumers, who need best quality but with a moderate price. Indian consumers love brands but equally seek personal touch and importance over too much of professionalism. The emerging readymade furniture companies have been largely a victim of too much demand from customers. The online furniture sector is growing but it has also seen and modified itself with the customization and service needs of Indian consumers. Live space, home lane, Pepper fry etc, have done their part of quality, branding and economical offering work that has made them work harder and spend crores, so that serving, innovation and brand image can go together. To get a pie in India market, the furniture and material companies have to go a long way with plenty of left out work that may sound tiering but certainly promising. We at the Ply Reporter, are always researching, doing surveys on ground and reporting, with a very open and ambitious objective i.e. - ‘The wood, panel, materials, furniture companies& trading, retailing and design community’ are creating a ecosystem which is big and instrumental to make India a 5 trillion economy by 2025. SCENARIO INDIA: WOOD AND DECORATIVE PANEL SECTOR

READYMADE FURNITURE; PROSPECTS 2020-2030 The readymade furniture demand is rapidly growing in the country, thanks to growing awareness for quality and finishing and scarcity of time among users. The rise in import duty on furniture or related items is very significant for India based material manufacturing companies. The Indian market is big and includes customers belonging to different income brackets. In Furniture segment, the carpentry based local and unorganized sector, that ruled the market for decades, is seeing a break away and increasingly more people are looking for professional furniture making companies with skill set to apply new fittings/hardware’s, new finishes and design trends.

MARKET REPORT

Today close to 95 % of the furniture market in India is unorganized and this has significant implications on how the hardware segment operates. The Indian wood, panel, timber and miscellaneous material made furniture market is around 1.85 lacs crore per annuum, according to estimates the Ply Reporter and Furniture Design & Technology magazine. The kitchen systems with a market size of over Rs 3,000 crore is expected to grow at a CAGR of 21-23% till 2024. To support these figures there is considerable amount of movement on ground but a compiled and verified data is still under progress at the offices of the two pioneer magazines that focuses ‘study and research based news reporting’ for the growth of Indian wood panel and furniture businesses. The furniture hardware, which is an essential part of furniture that enables new design and helps to create the functionality and ultra-latest factor; differentiate the furniture’s from being common, has been growing at a faster than expected pace. The locks and related hardware command a market value of approximately Rs 5500 crore and is growing at a healthy rate according to Ply Reporter estimates. If we look at the growing hardware market in the country, it has grown at humungous 30% plus growth every year on the lowest side.

ORGANISED PLAYERS ARE EXPECTED TO TAKE BIGGER SHARE IN 2020

MARKET REPORT

Putting all hopes pinned on 2020, there are so many questions floating everywhere. When will demand and payment scenario improve? Economy will stabilise or will continue to remain weak? In fact, the recent past has been so slow that the top industrialist too are hesitant in putting across their thoughts on markets. With lesser GDP growth, manufacturing activity contracting, private investment drying up and the industry is desperate for improvement in demand and cash flow. 2020 is expected to be very good for few organized players and I have no doubt on it. With right process and systems, brand image, regional plant set up, adequate cash flow and plenty of government spending’s coming up, there is no point uncovered that does not extend advantage to an organized brand. Brands like Centuryply, Green ply, Merino, Greenlam, Action tesa and Royale touche are expected to perform better. The highway to bigger market capture is clear for organized players like Green Panel, Rushil DÊcor and Stylam so 2020 is certainly going to

38

bring decent growth for them. The emerging organized brands like Virgo, Alstone, Austin, Amulya mica, Airolam etc will also have lot to gain with added capacities and new product categories. The mid-sized players will be facing another spell of hard work where they have to focus on best quality and right marketing policy. Around 40 such companies from North and Gujarat are there who could be performing well despite of shaky scenario during 2020.The raw material prices e.g timber, chemical, fuel cost, taxation will rise up in 2020 so there is only way forward is to work in right manner. The producers of calibrated plywood, or balanced planned laminate design brands with right strategy, team and channel partners will have bright 2020. The unorganized segment of plywood and laminate may continue to remain under pressure with not much happening residential real estate front. The PVC board segment will see stability with quality stabilizing around 450 density zone. Overall panel industry will have a growth bound phase this year but for few.

THE PLY REPORTER FEBRUARY 2020

SCENARIO INDIA: WOOD AND DECORATIVE PANEL SECTOR

TIMBER PRICES WILL REMAIN IN HIGH BRACKET

MARKET REPORT

The Plywood, Particle Board and MDF industry is about to witness volatile prices of raw material, largely tilted on higher side compared to 2019 levels. The raw material prices offered deep comfort to the manufacturers otherwise more of the plants would have fallen to sick category. During 2020, phenol prices are anticipated to be the biggest disruptor which will impact laminate as well as plywood industry to the most.

40

The timber price for plywood makers will be troubling again, if market demand for finished product goes up. Year 2019, witnessed a price rise reaching to 1000 mark and coming back to 850 again because of weak demand from industry side. Stay order on new wood-based industries in Uttar Pradesh also deterred the timber price levels in the year end. Although whether market demand improves or not, prices of poplar as well as eucalyptus logs will be rising by another 15 % July onwards. The arrival of more MDF, Particle board plants and new modern plywood factories will be helping the strengthening of timber prices be it North or South India. Conclusively prediction for 2020 is on the negative line with respect to profits for plywood, laminate, MDF manufacturers due to higher raw material cost. The timber prices in North India are hovering around 1000 mark for high grade timber where as the lowest grade wood process are stable at Rs 300 per quintal. With more capacity addition in plywood, particle board and MDF boards capacities, these prices are expected to remain in higher bracket for next two year in line. On an average, cording to experts and plantation growers estimates, the timber prices will be 18 to 20 percent higher compared to 2019. In the recent plantation seedling sales season, there is a spike in plant nursery sales of tree sapling in northern region, which is an indicator of optimism among planters

www.plyreporter.com

and farmers with respect to agro-wood plantation for wood and paper industry. The scenario for next two years are in higher price bracket but come 2021 end and there will be a beginning of downward price trend, reveal the Ply Reporter survey.

THE PLY REPORTER FEBRUARY 2020

SCENARIO INDIA: WOOD AND DECORATIVE PANEL SECTOR

CLUTTERED DECORATIVE LAMINATE MARKET

MARKET REPORT

Standard quality materials are hit by cheap versions:

42

The decorative laminate market is expected to see a lot in 2020. Year 2020 onwards, arrival of new decorative laminate plants will fall to minimum numbers though change of ownership will happen. The present market has over supply and huge inventory that is choking the money rotation and extending the calculated return to 4-5 months cycle. Year 2020 onwards will be a phase when strong and good brands will tighten their payment cycle, stricter norms for stockiest. In semi-organized category, distributor led working will make way for more of Depot driven working, thus taking service and delivery speed to better levels. There could be higher rewards and benefits in terms of attractive offerings for fast payment in short times in specially HPL. The strong players of semi organized category have already begun tightening the payment cycle in decorative laminate trade that will speed up and be followed by other actively. The year may see continuation of suffocation in sales and payment cycle that will lead to new investors entering and buying stakes from the old ones. The single press plants will see increased pressure as laminate marketing cost will further increase hence taking expenses to the roof. In

www.plyreporter.com

time ahead, market will be further pushed towards more of price sensitive offerings in unorganized category where as branded segment will spend more on sweeping the market share. The approval driven demand will escalate due to more commercial projects coming in 2020 and onwards. The market share of organized players is expected to grow this year with deeper penetration and material offerings in varied range along with more of large projects and OEM working gaining momentum. The market in 2020 will further accelerate towards lower thickness category in retail markets because more improvement in now taking place in lesser thicknesses. There are chances of more thickness categories emerging in 0.7, 0.74, 0.85 and 0.88 type thicknesses just to take some of the market. The increasing availability of 0.9 range will further dent the 1.0 mm market of mid-sized players. The addition of lesser thickness categories will continue to increase inventories in markets hence liquidity crunch will remain a burning issue for unorganized raw material suppliers. Year 2020 will be again ridden by oversupply though market would like to stick with better organized brands who has better policies and supply, not only price.

THE PLY REPORTER FEBRUARY 2020

SCENARIO INDIA: WOOD AND DECORATIVE PANEL SECTOR

MARKET REPORT

PARTICLE BOARD SECTOR, MORE CAPACITIES TO DENT MARKET PROFITS.

44

The Indian Particle board Industry has witnessed a steady growth over last 10 years where number of plants has crossed the half century mark. With particle board manufacturing lines springing up in every region of the country, viability of large size plants has come under question. Any big plant needs a structured and formal work culture which has been a weak area in case of particle board industry so far. The Kucth-Surashtra region alone house around two dozen plants and has emerged as a biggest manufacturing hub for wood-based particle board manufacturing during last five years. Many of the bagasse board players have also entered in wood-based boards hence bringing price base selling as a weapon. The quality parameter in a particle board material has taken a back seat particularly in case of retail led market consumption. The OEM led market is primarily buying from organized brands, where slowdown has caused a subdued phase lately. The unorganized players have been operating on almost 20 to 25% lesser price compared to branded particle board manufacturers. The brands operating in organized segment and their stockiest e.g Action Tesa, Century, Associate, Mapple etc, often express frustrations over prevailing market scenario where operating margins are pressed at the bottom if analyzed on the basis of return on investments.

www.plyreporter.com

Indian Particle board Industry largely comprise of production capacity ranging from 100 to 250 cubic meters manufacturing capacity, except one large Associate board plant located in southern region. With more than 50 mother board and pre-lam plants in the country, Particle board prices will continue to sell below price material in 2020 too. The OEMs will have to depend on imports and existing few brands who are offering the material under pressure from over supply emerging from unorganized segment. In the nutshell, year 2020 will continue to see more of average particle board supply growth, check on prices and arrival of 3 to 5 new plants to further crowd the market, on the contrary demand will pick up some pace in second half on 2020, following more brands coming to India to take the benefit of large middle class consumers market.

THE PLY REPORTER FEBRUARY 2020

SCENARIO INDIA: WOOD AND DECORATIVE PANEL SECTOR

MDF SHARE IS INCREASING, DOMESTIC AVAILABILITY

MARKET REPORT

The future of MDF in India is bright and prosperous, says Reporter’s study. Evidently year 2020 will have lesser of imports and more of domestic MDF boards sold in markets that will make way for more capacity utilization. The big sized MDF plants of Green Panel, Action Tesa and Century market share is certainly going to grow, followed by Vir MDF. Since capacities are rapidly being added where as demand is not growing that faster, thus margins will remain under check. Year 2020 will also witness a certain rise in timber prices by 15 to 20 percent hence there could be a stress for plants on margin front.

46

By mid of 2020, Indian MDF capacity will be touching 7000 cbm per day hence availability of MDF per market will be higher that will fuel more margin tightness on dealers front. Seeing past trends of India market, MDF segment also witness quality fragmentation and variety of new thicknesses by new players just to play the game on price basis. It is expected that 2020 will have more of price game compared to quality and brand. Further reduction in standard thicknesses and density of boards will be an area, where ply Reporter anticipate more fragmentation. During 2019, India has initiated a probe into alleged exports subsidization by Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam on fiberboards. The commerce ministry's investigation body, Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) has already started the probe to examine whether the subsidy from these five countries in fireboards impacting the domestic MDF industry

or not. The three major plants ‘Green panel, Century Plyboards and Rushil Decor have filed an application on behalf of domestic industry alleging providing cover from subsidization on fiberboards, thus demanding levy of countervailing duties on the imports of the goods. On the whole year will be a defining a turning curve, where application in paneling will be more tilted towards MDF compared to plywood. The coming time will certainly see, MDF replacing cheaper grade plywood from contractors furniture making and wall paneling. MDF will also witness deeper presence due to being more affordable and variety of option in Pre-lam boards category from organized brands. The Ply Reporter senses that ‘from here on MDF market will see a gradual rise in demand and capacity utilization. Overall there could be 55 to 60 % capacity utilization happening in 2020 compared to 40% during 2019.

Action TESA launched the first thin MDF/ HDF plant in the country as well as the most massive Particle Board Plant. The company is known to be the pioneer of manufacturing true HDF based Laminate Wooden Flooring. Born in 1970, Action Group has emerged as a multi-dimensional company with a strong presence in diverse sectors. The group of companies anticipated long ago the lucrative future market demand for MDF/HDHMR & Particle Board and related products. Hence, they created Action TESA as the brand name to cater Pre-laminated Particle Board, MDF, & HDHMR, HDF Laminate Wooden Flooring, Embossed HDF, UV Coated Panel, Acrylic Hi Gloss Boards, HDHMR Doors. Excerpts from his interview with The Ply Reporter.

Why is the MDF thicknesses decreasing day by day. Is it an ethical practice or people are taking undue advantage of the situation? To be honest, in a way it’s unfair. For example, you are required to use 2.3mm thickness and you apply 2.1mm instead as a cheaper option. But on the other hand, we are making one or two more thicknesses available in the market. This is causing a lot of chaos in the market and I am afraid the industry will face a lot of trouble in the times of come.

our capacity. We are in the process of upgrade at particle board plant that will further increase capacity to around 400 cbm or so. MDF market is currently tough due to lot of expansions and competition from lower priced options. At the moment, our total capacity utilization for all 3 products is around 70 percent. I believe, it will likely take us about a year or so to have complete utilization at MDF. We are growing at around 25%, with growth in MDF, HDHMR, Flooring, UV panels and other value added products.

What is the current capacity vs utilization at Action Tesa MDF and Particle Board amidst struggling markets?

You are the one of the oldest and strongest player in particles board and MDF domain? Where does Action Tesa stand in this whole market of particle board and MDF?

We increased our Particle Board capacity from 280 cubic meter to around 340 cbm, and presently using 100% of

Could you please let us know how you manage and operate SUFOMA brand? What SUFOMA has achieved so far in India? We are a state-owned company in China, and we do have certain standard to represent the image of China. I would like to put FOCUS and PERSISTANCE to differentiate us from others. We focus on high-end customers only and we persist in our focus. We are the only company in China for world-based-panel machine industry that we develop all the key machines in house. Could you please let us know the status of those projects? In the India Wood 2018 at Bangalore, we held a presentation to introduce a tailor-made MDF proposal for India market which yielded very surprisingly positive responses. We got two orders from India after that presentation as the proposal did get resonance from the people who are ready to set up new MDF project. The price we gave is also very attractive. We came to know from the success that if we do something from customers’ thinking latitude, it will work. The project is a
