DO NOT BE TRAPPED IN SALES NUMBERS, MONEY WON’T COME…
EDITORIAL
Pragat Dvivedi, Founder Editor

If the situation on corona improves in March-April, hopefully, it will take another two months to come to normalcy else there is no certainty till some breakthrough is achieved. There are hopes from rise in temperature during March that will help to curb and destroy the virus, till then there will be significant impact. The working in offices, factories are first hit if corona virus fear grip any country. So far India has been escaping the spread, let’s pray for blessings, nature support and lets adopt to hygiene and prevention.
Till writing this editorial, the market scenario is seemingly better and looks promising. Demand for plywood, Film faced plywood, decorative laminates, PB and MDF are better in flow than the last two quarters. The sales in decorative veneers and highlighters have seen flatness that may be due to steep pressure on consumers due to economic slowdown. The panel manufacturing industry and the wholesale community have been under tremendous stress since a couple of years but there is an optimism building up of for the year 2020. The raw material prices have eased a little that has extended the spark among manufacturers. But, the fall back for decorative laminate manufacturers is very much visible because the volume biggies are pushing their material in the markets, leading to a race of price cut. The decorative laminate players from mid-segment are desperate to sell their capacities and on the way to faster growth, they are compromising with margins, payment terms and hurriedly including new folders of lesser thicknesses. The outcome of present scenario in HPL points towards a scattered and fragmented decorative laminate trade in coming future where lot of stock build-up is happening with slowing payment cycle. How oversupply can distort beauty and add to strugglein a fine product, one can gauge from decorative laminate category? The only suggestion to manufacturers is, DO NOT GET TRAPPED in PUSH SALES, MONEY WONT COME… On the other side, the impact of corona virus epidemic is visible on industrial sectors across the products including wood panel, decorative and raw materials for surfacing needs. The entire industry and trade transactions and transport is expected to be hit badly, which may jeopardise many companies supply chain and businesses. The related machinery where raw material and equipments, parts are coming from China is feeling a great hit and will derail or delay many of the businesses that are directly related to them. The economic implications of coronavirus in India are yet unknown because the infection cases are very few in proportion to other countries with no death reported till date. But, if the scenario become serious due to virus and spreading with pace in India, there would be a direct hit to businesses, trade, industry and economy. If any corona fear grips India in coming few weeks, there will be certainly a direct effect on demand for wood panel and decorative products. it’s not yet known but certainly worrying for India markets. Enjoy reading the India wood related news and trade reports… HAVE A CORONA FREE WORLD SOONER THAN IMANGINED,

ANTI-SLOWDOWN VITAMIN: RETAILERS SHOULD ADD SAWN TIMBER IN THEIR PRODUCTS BASKET
APNI BAAT
Rajiv Parashar, Editor
26
In 2019 hardwood lumber shipped from the USA increased by 72 percent in value and by 140 percent in volume compare to last year. Canadian Wood also has been working sustainably. The demand of American Softwoods, Swedish Wood, and German Woods also noted to be increasing since last two years and the players are offering attracting price, suitable sizes and grading as per India’s requirements. Hence, usages of Solid wood sawn timber have been increasing, and only 2-3 % plywood dealers/ retailers are dealing in these categories.
Retailers and dealers are struggling to maintain their sales tally in present slowdown time because there are oversupply scenario in entire decorative and wood panel products. They are facing lots of challenges to retain average business turnover; hence they are unable to earn a minimum profit margins. Retailers are facing cutthought competition in market because of abundant supply of plywood, decorative veneers, laminates, Pre-lam Boards, Architectural hardware, other decorative panels and highlighters. The preview of our survey on Sawn Timber finds, ‘Sawn Timber and Decorative Lumbers could be ‘Anti-Slowdown Vitamin’ for wood panel retail trade. After the emergence of E-furniture Retailers, Entry of IKEA and growing demand of customised furniture, it is noted that there is exponential growth in Solid Wood Furniture demand in India. Increasing Custom Duty on Furniture import will also fuel the demand of ‘Make In India’ customised furniture. It has also been noted that Architects and Designers are creating innovative household furniture, beds, dining tables, sofas, cabinets and wardrobes with fusion of Solid Wood, Panels and Decorative materials. Study also reveals that domestic furniture and handicraft producers based in Jodhpur, Jaipur, Pune, Moradabad, Saharanpur, Bangalore etc has shifted their focus on domestic market for catering demand of customised furniture made of solid wood. Interior Contracting companies, which are taking big projects of Five star Hotels, Resorts, Hospitalities, Residential, Institutional etc also confirm the increasing consumption of Good quality Hardwood and Softwood lumbers in India. Data from different exporting countries to India, also show the growth in demand of Sawn timber and lumber in India from furniture, construction and house hold industry. In 2019 hardwood lumber shipped from the USA increased by 72 percent in value and by 140 percent in volume compare to last year. Canadian Wood also has been working sustainably to promote their different timber species such as Hemlock, Yellow Cedar etc and they have shown mainly application such Wood Houses and different furniture. This base could be expanded and retailers may benefit from the market gap. Timber exporting Countries Foram, such as AHEC, Canadian Wood, Swedish Wood, French Timber etc, must approach Plywood Dealers and Retailers for their further growth. Similarly, adding solid wood in their baskets would be ‘Anti-Slowdown Vitamin’ for Retailers. This March 2020 issue is available with lots of fresh information, reports, products launch and developments in wood panel and decorative sector. The Interactions with ‘Walky-Talky’ of Veneer Industry Mr. Bharat Seth and Star of All Wood Mr. Ashish Agarwal, Director, Starwood Veneers are worth reading. The reports, showcases, pictures related to recently held expo in Bangalore would remind your memories and fresh info for those, who did not visit the exhibition. Be safe and help others to be safe in present breakout of Corona Virus. We hope for ‘Your good growth in FY 2019-20’!

CALIBRATED PLYWOOD, FILM FACE SHUTTERING PLYWOOD TO SEE FASTER GROWTH
dSfyczsVsM vkSj fQYe Qsl 'kVfjax IykbZ dks feyh ubZ xzksFk
n the recent market survey conducted by the Ply Reporter and BSMR, the demand trends for genuine calibrated plywood made with fully composed core veneer ranked at the top among product asked by retailers and dealers. The second hot product category for the trade was film faced shuttering plywood followed by Medium Density fibre boards of high density high moisture resistance grade. The demand for calibrated plywood is still in infancy and is fast catching up among traders and wholesalers. The survey conducted among 87 cities across the country reflected a curious mindset of dealers for branded calibrated plywood with genuine BWR category. The top most reason mentioned by the dealers was kitchen and wardrobe segment where high gloss laminates or acrylic sheets are being applied and need an absolute zero waviness finish surface. Mr. Bharat Sheth
How would you describe the journey of selling Decorative Veneers, which has lasted for over 25 years?
Veneer as a product needs to be marketed very well. This can happen if all the producers come together and form a body whose function is to promote veneers in the right way.
I can sum up as it was one of the most rewarding periods of my life. I enjoyed every moment and have seen constant changes happening, which kept me interested. What are the changes have taken place in these many years, can you explain in detail? Ideally I would like to say about the changes in 3 phases: (Year 1995 to 2005): The veneers sold or are known to buyers were mainly the Indian species like Indian Rosewood & Indian Mahogany (real names) + Golden Cedar, White Cedar etc (not real names). Of course Burma Teak was the number one specie. The logs were imported and sliced by most of the companies. The import of veneer was not allowed, since it was not under OGL (open general license). I do not remember exactly when, but with reforms taking place, the veneer imports were allowed by the government. Some leading Indian companies started visiting Europe & US for purchase of veneers. The veneers imported by these companies were natural veneers and www.plyreporter.com
