Today HPL segment is hopeful and buoyant with growth estimates but also confused, drained and looking at a blank canvas. where there is illusion of grand success but no clue about where to begin and how to maintain the growth flow. Retailers are desperate for margins hence curious of creating live sheet galleries with combination panel displays but all this add up to the cost of material for a consumer. The underline fact is, everyone is trying to solve the laminate selling puzzle which is totally a result of mindless expansion and hollow conceptual drive emerging from ambitious people from manufacturing, trading, design paper & plate trading companies and raw material suppliers.
During a discussion at IIR, the eminent panelist talked about growing stock in decorative laminate segment at every level in trading chain. The opinion gathered at New Delhi mega conclave, reflected the tremendous pressure mounting on laminate distributors and its damaging impact on laminate manufacturing companies who are fighting with rising payment issues, poor cash flow and risk of survival in future. The scenario for laminate stockist is equally risky as they too are not untouched with rising inventories, looming dead stock and growing payment outstanding issues. The laminate market is over flooded and stressed due to rise of total laminate stock in every city just because, instead of two prime thicknesses 1.00 mm and 0.8 mm, An influential distributor is forced to maintain stock of 1.0, .92, 0.85, 0.8, 0.75, 0.7 etc kind of 6-7 thickness types in HPL. The inventories have rose to 3 times higher levels compared to 6 years ago, which is a signal of blatant mismanaged business practice prevailing in HPL industry and trade. The growth is superficially felt at factory level who feel happy about growing sales In their ledgers but actually not growing at all when it comes to actual receipt and cash flow. The Non-folder laminate suppliers are also feeling the pressure on demand for fast innovation, panel based sales practices and looming risk of price war instead of design innovation. There is a need to put a healthy ecosystem which probably will emerge only after a few more failed laminate plants which is very possible in near future. As we know, after every destruction comes a calm phase where we evolve and learn from the past. Probably our HPL segment will learn after the “fittest will survive” phase which is ongoing. The retailers and stockiest shall be putting more energy and mind in choosing the right material supplier and brand and prefer to such companies who have balanced approach towards quality, vision and focused working. “Price, price and price” approach wont last after a couple of years. Thank you all for coming to IIR and WADE Asia 2019, in respectable numbers and supporting the pure intent of spreading knowledge and awareness at much needed times.

AIR POLLUTION :
TAKE A WEEK SHUT DOWN, AS A LESSON FOR FUTURE !
APNI BAAT

North based wood panel laminate and other related industries should take precautionary step as soon possible to restrain the challenges with technological upgradation in their power generation systems. With timed government help Switching to Gas Fuel system in industrial units including plywood and laminates clusters will help controlling air pollution and Growing threat to the industry, when the problem reach to their doorstep, because it is fact that if you don’t make it correct, the government would compel the manufacturing establishments to change to manage air pollution scenario.
Northern India plywood, panel and laminate industry is struggling due to oversupply, slow real estate market, liquidity crunch, timber shortage, de-monetisation effect, GST and increasing expenses. All these factors led to affect the profit margins of industry and trade. Some companies have somehow maintained their sales but are forced to do work with poor profit margins. The situation of increasing air pollution in north India states pose another burden to plywood laminates industries. Due to high air pollution scenario, Pollution Control Boards and NGT have taken stern step, by ordering to defer all construction works, operation of industries including ply-lam factories in Delhi-NCR region, Lucknow and others cities. Due to deferred construction activities, shuttering plywood demand had fallen since two weeks, whereas the manufacturing establishments have suffered huge loss due halt in its production. The pollution causes another burden to these wood panel sector, which has been surviving with low margins due to above mentioned challenges. Air Pollution is becoming every year phenomenon, affecting more than 150 plywood and laminates manufacturing units. The producers are forced to defer production for almost 7 to 10 days, which leads direct losses in crores to ply-lam sector. This year, the affect has broadened to many other cities of north e.g Lucknow, meerut, and if the situation previals to more days or next year, the side-affect may reach to Yamuna Nagar, Ludhiana, Barailly etc as per sources at EPCB and NGT. Hence North based wood panel laminate and other related industries should take precautionary step as soon possible to restrain the challenges with technological upgradation in their power generation systems. Take this a week shut down, as a lesson for future ! This issue has featured number of market reports, updates, launches related to plywood, MDF, Laminates, Timber etc, which are worth read. Besides there are market reports related to many brands such as Greenlam, Century Ply, Amulya, Archidply, Kajaria Ply, Virgo etc published. The Ply Reporter take a previledge to ‘Thank You’ all sponsering companies, wholesellers, stockiest, dealers, showroom owners, project consultant, Architects and Designers, for a ‘HUGE SUCCESS’ of IIR, India Interior Retailing. UP POLLUTION CONTROL BOARD TAKES STRICT ACTION AGAINST POLLUTING PLYWOOD FACTORIES
T NEWS WATCH
he effect of harvest residue burning by farmers in several northern regions in the country has started showing its bad effect and the pollutant factory operations is being questioned by the authorities. Due to weather conditions, burning of harvest residue and ignorance of pollution control norms by manufacturing units create breathing and health problems for city dwellers. Observing the bad effects, Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) has come into action against rapidly increasing air pollution in the state.
44
In order to control the worsening air pollution, the board has taken strict action due to which many factories’ production has been put on hold till November 15, 2019 in the capital city Lucknow. Its effect is seen in other cities like Ghaziabad, Noida, Moradabad, Meerut also. After UPPCB action, approximately 13 plywood factories’ production has been affected in Lucknow, five units in Ghaziabad; Moradabad is also under the authorities’ scanner. The temporarily closed most plywood factories in Lucknow are located in the area of Talkatora and Faizabad Road. The suspension of factory operation in Lucknow came to effect after UPPCB board meeting held on October 23, 2019. The board also enquired UPHDC to abstain construction work and a notice has been issued to 29 under construction projects in Lucknow who were not following the pollution control norms. Some of the projects under construction in different cities and some of the wood panel factories have been imposed huge fine by the authorities. According to media report, apart from Lucknow, a fine of total Rs 2.38 crore has also been imposed on the factories in Ghaziabad area. The UPPCB may initiate stricter action against the industrial units in near future if the pollution control norms are not followed in UP.

PUNJAB GOVT TO CONDUCT A SURVEY ON AVAILABILITY OF EUCALYPTUS & POPLAR TREES IN THE STATE
T NEWS WATCH
he softening of the law for opening up new plywood manufacturing units in Punjab was strongly opposed by the industry players specially plywood manufacturers. Last month the government had proposed to de-license the plywood manufacturing industry. Existing manufacturers were worried about short supply due to shortage of timber to their existing units due to the coming up of wood based manufacturing units and clusters after the new rules. The Punjab state forest department has taken initiative to conduct a survey for the availability of Eucalyptus and Poplar trees in the state after the industry representative meeting with Punjab forest department and FRI, Dehradun officials.
48
A group of Punjab Plywood Manufacturers had strongly opposed the government intention as the main features of the new rules included Agro forestry species such as Poplur, Eucalyptus, Drek, Mulberry, Subabul, Silver Oak, Malabar Neem, Khejri, Indian Willow, Gamari to be exempted from the purview of Timber Transit regime (this provision was not there in previous rules) along with exemption of Bamboo grown on private lands from the purview of Timber Transit Regime. In the meeting with forest officials, PPMA representatives said that the new rules will not only severely hit the plywood industry but would also pose a danger to the forest cover. Mr Indrajeet Singh Sohal, President, PPMA said that since 2014 a lot of change has happened in the industry and now there is an acute shortage of Safeda (eucalyptus) and Poplar timber in Punjab due to which the prices have gone double in just one year period. Punjab Conservator of Forests (Extension), Mr V. Chauhan, who was among the officers who attended the meeting, said the survey has been conducted in 2014. “A need based survey will be conducted afresh,” he added. Another officer raised questions on bringing more buyers in the market due to which there is increased cost of raw material. He reasoned that today the grower is at a more advantageous position to negotiate the price. One of the officers stated that conducting survey is the department’s decision but it should not be concluded that the Government will not notify the new rules till the survey report comes.

CENTURY PLY EXPECTS DOUBLE DIGIT GROWTH IN FY 20
C
NEWS WATCH
entury Plyboards is looking at double-digit growth this fiscal even as it expects to maintain margins at FY19 levels. The company will balance its portfolio between premium and mass offerings, and increase its distribution presence. In FY19, the company had an operating profit margin of over 13 per cent, a decline from 16 per cent a year ago.For the first three months of FY20, its operating profit margin (excluding other income) stood at 14.96 per cent (16.11 per cent in Q1 FY19), while the consolidated net profit saw a 4 per cent decline YoY.

“We are looking to maintain margins at FY19 levels. Plywood is a little muted. But laminates, particleboards and MDF (medium density fibre-board) should do well with double-digit margins,” said Keshav Bhajanka, Executive Director, during an interview. According to him, the plywood business, which continues to be among the topline and bottomline drivers, has “been under a bit of strain”. Weak consumer sentiments and a general slowdown meant “muted growth”. Dealers had a conservative approach to stocking. The company worked on its branding strategy and increased the distribution reach including that of its mass brand ‘Sainik’. Now, the focus is on expanding its presence in weaker markets like Karnataka. Apart from Sainik, the eponymous brand ‘Century’ remains its primary offering in the premium segment. Laminates have been “doing quite well” and Bhajanka expects “double-digit margins” in the category. The entry into new offerings with higher volumes has also gone well. MDF and particleboard are among the better performing segments. The company recently brought on stream its MDF facility at Hoshiarpur in Punjab. “Margins are expected to be around 20 per cent in MDF while they are likely to be in the 10 per cent range for plyboards,” he said. The demand for plywood, MDF and particle-board is expected to improve with recovery in the real estate sector, industry observers said. Century Ply plans to invest in a new MDF unit in Uttar Pradesh. Details on capacity and investments are being finalised. “By December, plans should be finalised,” he said. Around Rs.20-25 crore is being invested in Gabon in Africa for sourcing veneers. www.plyreporter.com
