Plant efficiency & market understanding is the answer in tough times

Editorial

Pragat Dvivedi, Founder Editor

20

This is the time one must focus on re calculating cost by saving on every resource and preparing a price list based on market understanding. Instead of packing your bags filled with samples and catalogue’s or making repeated calls to salesmen and dealers, this is right when you must identify the reasons for which a dealer or a retailer would like to buy from you.

I

n past two months, I am seeing more of desperate faces who are extremely suspicious. The desperation is growing with each passing day because the market is behaving like never before. You may come across people who will be heard saying ‘I have never seen so much slump in my career’ or ‘never see such a bad market where no demand-no payment’. As a market person and statistician, in my 19 years of business journalism, I have a different perception and way of seeing things. Since I have seen similar situation around 4 times in previous years too, I am sure of one thing - If good times are not here, bad time will also not last’. The present times are just not right for making desperate attempts to find dealers, get orders or run from pillar to post, instead it is time one shall look at plant efficiency, wastage control and right human allocation with appropriate mind set suiting to the section he is assigned with. In plywood industries there are so many gaps and lapses that are needed to be plugged and sealed for example; 1) Inventory of core veneers, face, raw materials are needed to be stored in tandem with order flow. 2) Raw materials used on a rotation to reduce wastage completely. 3) Right mindset among workers and supervisors who can save on every inch of veneer or every gram of resin or every minute of a machine run or every watt/ml of fuel and energy. 4) Right calculating practices to add overheads and cost. 5) Plant insight and finished goods produced followed by B grade checking and sorting formats 6) Wastage % & plant output ratio at par with best of other plants/leading industries etc. On the other side this is the time one must focus on re calculating cost by saving on every resource and preparing a price list based on market understanding. Instead of packing your bags filled with samples and catalogue’s or making repeated calls to salesmen and dealers, this is right when you must identify the reasons for which a dealer or a retailer would like to buy from you. There is absolute clarity that either one has to be a brand in an area, state or region one has to become highly competitive. Mid sized industries have tried to be none till now. If some has made some efforts with marketing or branding, they have limited themselves to some samples, ads or facebook posts or whatsApp posting. Indeed it is not at all enough. Now one has to have deeper market understanding, better planned approach and right people on every nodal points. I strongly hope for a sharp rise in demand post 2019 because of many factors and policy decisions made by government during past 5 years. But that is certainly not going to be reaped or taken benefit of by every one. The production capacities are so much higher than expected demands that it will need more than being just manufacturer or industry person. An industrialist and successful entrepreneur must learn to have better market understanding based on facts and research with fine back up of an efficient plant. We all must wake to the new reality that is driven by organized working, formal work culture and a more than aware consumer.

Good Quality Particle Boards are always dear to markets

apni baat

Rajiv Parashar, Editor

2019 could be smooth and rewarding for particle board industry because of a decent demand coming from rural housing and corporate office segment. The industry trends also reflects that users are ready to pay a sustainably genuine price to good quality particle boards because there is a gap in demand-supply of high quality boards, hence the producers should focus on quality than go into price war, which happened in Particle Boards in 2018.

T

he Indian wood panel industry and market overview reveal bright prospect for quality particle board compared to scenario in plywood and MDF. The applicability and affordability with working ease in furniture making is so good with PB that it provide an edge for this material in Government sector, Ready-made furniture, commercial space, Budget housing, e-commerce furniture segment, economical furniture category etc. It is also found that Particle Board industry strengthened in 2018 because there was not much of capacity addition last year. Whereas, other wood panel products such as Plywood, MDF, etc made huge expansion. The disturbance in India’s biggest manufacturing plant has also created some space for good quality wood based board producers. Most of Indian Particle board plants are in tune of 180 to 250 cbm per day because such plants are economical, viable and have been in running trend since last 5 years. India is having above 10,000 cbm per day capacity that includes wood and bagasse. Many bagasse based plants have license and infrastructure of making wood based boards also but there are few. Apart from domestic particle boards manufacturing, the imported boards have around one fourth of the share in mainly high quality boards, that is required by big and quality conscious furniture/OEMs and Kitchen brands. Ply Reporter’s recent survey clearly indicates that lack in supply of good quality particle boards does offer a significant space for another thousand cbm plus capacities of good quality boards. It is also analyzed that 2019 could be smooth and rewarding for particle board industry because of a decent demand coming from rural housing and corporate office segment. The industry trends also reflects that users are ready to pay a sustain-ably genuine price to good quality particle boards because there is a gap in demand-supply of high quality boards, hence the producers should focus on quality than go into price war, which happened in Particle Boards in 2018. The April issue is very much important for entire wood panel industry and trade because there are many reports which indicates ‘survival trends in difficult time of order and collection’ in wood panel and plywood sector, which may help to correct your policy in current Financial Year. On the basis of based on research and analysis, Ply Reporter has been published many reports in 2019 from January to April, which are indicators for making your plan in year 2019-20. This issue also featured an interview of Mr. B L Jain, who has come back to Panel Boards manufacturing sector after 3 years of selling Uniply, and has entered into innovative Natural Fibre Boards manufacturing. There is very insightful brief article on PVC growing uses and its impact on markets which could be useful of HPL makers and sellers. Besides, comprehensive reports on recently held ‘Delhiwood’ exhibition and many more happenings…. Good luck for FY 2019-20 !

GrowinG SaleS with drop in marGin for orGanized wood panel brandS

O

NEWS WATCH

rganised wood panel and plywood companies have witnessed a growth ranging between 6 to 12 percent across the sector during financial year 2018-19. Though the drop in their profit margins is an indicator of pressure in this segment. Entire bucket of Plywood, Panels, Decorative laminates or Doors producing companies and brands have expanded their network and extended their product categories to cater different buyer groups but the past Q3 result in FY 201819 and the expected results being heard is keeping a profitability pressure among organized players.

28

Due to increasing supply of finished goods and rise in Raw material cost and higher expenses, the organized sector is trying to cut down on various points including substituted raw material and increasing plant efficiency. The ongoing demand slump and price war like situation is not giving any scope to these companies as of now. Big brands like Green Ply, Century Ply, Archid Ply, Duro etc have introduced economical range plywood to cater the demand of middle-class customers and even furniture grade but the material lifting has been not very rosy other than few projects. The lifting is not much because a huge supply of good quality materials from mid and small sized plywood brands from northern India’, says a Surat based Plywood dealer. Slow real estate market and payment pressure and holding on to market share factor are the key reasons for profit drop of formal sector companies feel experts in trade. Most of the big brands have registered around 10-14 % growth in FY 2018-19 compare to previous year largely

due to a result of implementation of GST followed by e-way bills, but the companies had to offer schemes, TOD, CD etc to maintain the sales tally. In the product categories MDF has been the worst hit that has brought down the profitability for Plywood majors in this FY. The organized companies are in process of summing up their financial analysis but the possibility of decrease in profit compared to last year growth are very much expected. It is to be noted that Century Ply posted a turnover of Rs 2018 crore, Green ply Industries stood at 1651 crore where as Archid ply Industries touched 311 crore. The organized companies like Sarda Plywood, Uniply Industries are making efforts to sustain and grow amidst ongoing competitive scenario.

AIPMA IncreAses PrIce of fInIshed Products by 10% The national general body also suggested being conscious about payment and demand/supply

A

ll India Plywood Manufacturers’ Association decided to increase the rates of finished products such as plywood, block board, flush door and alternate plywood across the country. The association has requested their members to implement the increased price with immediate effect. The decision was taken into a meeting of executives of “All India Plywood Manufacturer’s Association “was held on Saturday 16th March 2019, at India Expo and Mart, GREATER NOIDA. During the meeting Mr. Devender Chawala, President; Mr. Naresh Tiwari, Chairman; and other senior office bearers such as Mr. Vikas Khanna, Manish Kedia, Mr. Ashok

The decision has been taken such as 1) Price Hike: To meet the immense price hike in timber increase the Price/Rate of finished products POPULAR plywood, Block Board & Flush Doors by 10% and alternate plywood by 6%. Every manufacturer has been requested to strictly implement these rate revisions with immediate effect.

2) To maintain the balance of Demand and Supply: Curtail over production by lowering the working hours from 14 hours a day to 10 hours. State associations are requested to conduct meeting of manufacturers in their area for working 5 days a week and give feedback/ suggestions of the outcome, so that the matter can be taken up in General House Meeting. 3) Payment terms: Due to increasing price of raw material and that too on No Credit basis, involvement of funds have increased tremendously and the industry is facing acute payment crunch due to delayed payments, so, sell your finished products either on instant payment or minimum credit facility. Talking about the use of ground water Mr Naresh Tiwari, Chairman of AIPMA instructed the industry leaders to think about the use of ground water and the notice and dead line to get NOC about it. It is noted that the procedural issues pertaining to getting NOC is very complicated and tedious and goes against the objective of the government for ease of doing business. The requirement listed for getting the NOC is very long and will be very difficult to fulfil for MSME. He also talked about strengthening the national body AIPMA so that the industry do not get divided in regional advantages for manufacturing and trading in wood panel industry.

Mr Devender Chawla, President, AIPMA attracted the delegates’ attention towards strengthening the hands of AIPMA so that a single voice can go to the industry manufacturers and traders and its implementation could become easier. This is the only solutions to challenges before industry. He also narrated the various challenges before the industry and how the industry leaders altogether overcome it. He said that today’s generation is very ambitious and are thinking globally. But we should act locally and lead the industry to get mature with vision. For the use of BIS marks the executives present in the meeting were agreed to take up this at General House meeting of AIPMA to be held shortly and discuss the matter with deep interest. www.plyreporter.com

“Light wood frame building is quick, easy, user-friendly, beautiful and is right for our planet because it is made from sustainable wood,” says Mr Peter Bradfield, Technical Advisor, FII India. FII is aware that wooden houses are gaining popularity in India for resorts at beach locations and hill stations, and also for farm houses and countryside home sites with infrastructure and access challenges, due to their advantage of being portable. It also gains attention because of the very low carbon footprint. This prompted FII to organise an LWF training for the Indian T&G house manufacturers who liked what they saw at the exhibition and expressed interest in this method of construction, because of its different style. www.plyreporter.com
