Margins are too low & payments are very slow. In a promising sector of building material in a growing country like India, where there is enough room for everyone yet such scenario arise because many people enter in the business blindly. Financial capability, Marketing plan, Execution, conversion to sales and Payment collection have to be strengthened in line with the big & established players to remain alive during next 2-3 years of this roller coaster phase.
T
he wood panel industry is going through a phase of uneasiness because the rising manufacturing cost is not being absorbed in selling price. The uneasiness is deep and high in the field of Decorative Laminates and Particle Board because of selling price getting low. For new or financially weaker players, margins in these two product categories are very narrow and to moving ahead on that level is getting difficult yet there are 7-8 more plants are in pipe line. I truly believe that smaller size and liner-based factories won’t last this Financial Year unless they have access to some huge reserved capital for the hit and trial. Most of the laminate companies are trying their best to increase sales by bringing beautiful Folders, new combinations, Attractive schemes but as a product category there are 50 to 60 such plants who are slipping from their survival mark. The plywood demand has improved marginally after the price increase pushed by manufacturers. The branded and semi branded plywood manufacturers are operating on very narrow margins but the jump in poplar prices has forced cheap & all-poplar ply manufacturers to losses. For average quality and short core plywood manufacturers, the time is fast slipping by. The Plywood trade is initiating to compete fiercely by offering lower rate despite of unviable equation, thus the longevity of many players will be on stake soon or in coming time. According to data, facts and emerging possibilities in my analysis, 100 plus truck load plywood manufacturers with one Flagship brand will be able to sell through the tough period of 2019 and 2020. The plywood brands with good quality and genuine price will remain hot during this period. The WPC, PVC board is a growing product category where market is worth Rs 1200 crore and growing steadily each year. But too many manufactures emerged in very short span of time that did not allow this product quality to sustain, hence weak and desperate producers made this product loose its image and pulling down the sales on retail counters. The PVC board market is stable with few mature brands who are doing better but margins for manufacturers or sellers are not too encouraging to keep going. A large part of Indian Particle board industry has done the same deterioration for itself which is suffocating this product segment as well. Better is to find strong and smart companions, partners and sellers. Prepare your company to embrace competition else open to be shutter down. Wishing you all good business ahead.

Present market scenario hints that MDF, PB share is growing but not mainly on the cost of Plywood, or even cheaper grade plywood but to growing applications. Presently market has compelled the MDF/PB producers to reduce prices if they want to remain in the market.
A
t Ply Reporter, we often hear opinions expressed by traders, industries, machinery experts and pioneers in wood panel industry that MDF is growing but can’t replace plywood so soon. They say that “Globally MDF, PB have 80 percent of market in wood panel category whereas Plywood has mere 15-20 percent but in India it is vice-versa. This is expected to change in favour of MDF/PB, which is cheaper than plywood.” Their comments have motivated more companies to enter in MDF/PB manufacturing without knowing supplydemand scenario and Indian consumers’ behaviour, and even without having understanding of timber availability or actual investment needed to educate consumers etc. During last 2-3 years, MDF production capacity grew more than 150 percent and in PB it rose by 75 percent, but the market growth has been limited below 20 percent in case of both. The Plywood manufacturing scenario is also upward where capacity has grown by around 50 percent during last three years against annual growth of around 7-8 percent. The present market scenario hints that MDF, PB share is growing but not mainly on the cost of Plywood, or even cheaper grade plywood but to growing applications. Presently market has compelled the MDF/PB producers to reduce prices if they want to remain in the market. MDF and Pre laminated Particle Boards prices have dropped by 15-20 % compared to prices of last indicate that it is not exactly what was though to be an easy replacement by many manufacturers. It means market adoption is slow and there is struggle for survival. Despite of price decrease, MDF companies are struggling for sales and If this will need to change then MDF/PB industry need to plan to invest in awareness, education & information dissemination about the usage/benefits among users. They have to spend their energy, time and money with patience to accelerate the market growth, because only rising supply is not enough to get good share of plywood. While preparing for August issue, The Ply Reporter team really struggled to get some mood cheering news and in fact it could not find much. The August issue of “The Ply Reporter” magazine has featured the ground market report on MDF, Laminates, Plywood, Timber and many more. The One2one interaction with Mr. Vishal Dokania, Director, Cedar Laminates (Durian) is worth read for Laminate Industry and trade. The benefits of ‘Sanding Machine in Plywood Industry’ is well explained by Mr. Sunil Srivastava, Director, Kumar Engineering in our regular column that highlight interview of machinery manufacturers. Apart from these, there is coverage on seminar on Wood technology interface at FRI, various product launch, glittering award ceremony and updates from industry/trade. Enjoy reading, and send your view.

UP gets whoPPing 15,000 aPPlications for wood based indUstries
U
NEWS WATCH
ttar Pradesh Forest department has received 15000 online applications for new wood based industries in the state. The applications were received during a specified time limit that ended on 15th July 2018. On the basis of availability of wood in the region UP Government had initiated the process of new licenses for wood based industries. The state invited online application for new licenses to set up wood based industries in eight categories such as Saw Mill, Veneer, Plywood, Veneer and Plywood, Stand alone chipper, MDF/HDF and Particle Board.
28
As per report, in MDF and Particle Board categories, the government has received 30 applications whereas in Veneers and Plywood, they have got more approx 2000 applications in each category. Reports from government sources find that there are approx 4600 applications in wood panel segments that include MDF, Particle Boards, Core Veneers, Plywood and Veneer combined. According to sources and available reports, the leading brands from plywood and laminates segment do not have a plant in UP. Players are eager to establish wood panel manufacturing units in Uttar Pradesh thanks to timber availability and culture of plantation in the state. On the similar lines, large number of distributors and other industry people are willing to enter into plywood and wood panel manufacturing for which they have filed applications. Currently the department officials are in process of scrutiny of all the application which is expected to take a couple of months to conclude before the final selection process begins. The further course of action
is not known for any official notification has come so far on the further process. Sources say that forest department will distribute licenses on lottery system each category according to availability of timber stocks. The Department of Forest of UP has revised the terms and condition to bring transparency in the process of selection for wood industries. One thing is certain that Uttar Pradesh is set to see the biggest growth in this product manufacturing to become biggest hub for plywood & panel production in India. The Ply Reporter published a complete article a year ago that very sooner UP may open new units that will add to new units, oversupply and escalation of timber prices in long run.

‘Let your channel partners be your profit sharing partners,’ this is the mantra for success in Laminate trade
132
-says Mr. Vishal Dokania, Director, Durian Laminates Cedar Decor Pvt Ltd, maker of Durian Laminates brand, has maintained its decent growth rate year-on-year, despite the market registered over-supply scenario due to huge capacity addition in laminates. Among a number of brands in HPL category, the company is expanding its Distributors network in small and big cities offering win-win situation for company and channel partners with long term consistency policies, good quality product offerings, prompt and better services, timely updating of catalogues and enhancement of product range, and attractive catalogues with larger size displays which helps in easy selection at retail counters as well. During One 2 one interaction with The Ply Reporter, Mr. Vishal Dokania, Director of the company shared his market strategy, policy and future growth plan. Edited excerpts.. www.plyreporter.com
Our transparent policies and operation system has built confidence with our Distributor network which has helped them to operate with much ease with our company. When forming our policies, one of the most important things we consider is how we can maximise our Distributor ROI and profitability. This helps us create a win-win situation with our esteemed channel partners. How was your HPL manufacturing business in FY 201718? How much was growth and capacity utilization? FY 2017-2018 was the best year so far for our HPL vertical. We say a sharp increase in appointment of new distributors PAN India in unrepresented areas for the brand. YOY Growth was close to 15% in terms of volume sold. Overall the capacity utilization with our company was 93.7% (adjusting breakdowns and other delays). In present competitive market scenario, do you think that margins/realizations are shirking. If yes, then what is way-out? This is the rule of economics that when supply exceeds the demand, the market turns buyer centric and in this situation, there happens to be acute price sensitivity. However, since we operate in various segments of the market we have been able to achieve higher margins than last year. A big factor for this was the price support of primary RM like Phenol. How would you plan to keep away yourself from crowd? Since inception of our company, we have set our policy framed and operated, which are Distributor centric and very friendly with them.
