ARE YOU BUILDING A SUCCESSFUL & LASTING ENTERPRISE?
Editorial

Will you ever buy such sub-standard material for yourself and your family? Assuming your answer is NO, your response is also the future of such businesses!

he top two volume products for wood panel trade are Plywood & Laminate. These two products constitute around 80% sales volume of an average plywood retailer thus earning of a shop depends on them. During 2018, the market for these products turned extremely competitive, hence pulling down operating margins with each passing month. Either they are manufacturers, distributors or dealers, profits have come down for everyone due to rise in supply and mindless price cuts. People reduce cost and pass on the price to its next in chain for retaining/capturing market share. This is when consolidation begins, and factories either get sold or shutdown. Following is an ongoing example. There is a desperate attempt to sell under-thickness category of laminate instead of standardised “1.0 mm or 0.8 mm” in India. Offering 0.9 mm or .85 mm is just a way to reduce sales price per sheet by Rs 100 or more, but ironically the cost of “1.0 mm Vs 0.92 mm” has no such big difference except some change in décor paper cost. But it extends a chance for a dealer to earn that extra Rs 60-100 bucks that he thinks is an extra profit or smart way to operate. Following this shortcut many aspirant HPL manufacturers believe, bringing .9mm folder is a smart move because it can be accepted by dealers faster and this is what many distributors advise. In fact a manufacturer must think and realise that “if he is reducing the 20-25% price for 0.9 mm at place of 1.0mm then can’t he keep the thickness standard at 1.0 mm and reduce that amount?” Same way a distributor must think that “Is it not a better way to keep the thickness as 1.0 mm and sell cheap because at least it offers a standard thickness if not décor quality on that product”. Think!!! Who are you fooling on thickness as there is no end of thickness game. One may go on reducing from 1.0 mm to 0.92, 0.9, 0.85, 0.76, 0.7, 0.65, 0.55, 0.45, 0.4mm, etc but, does it help to earn or it offer better surface quality? Have you seen any successful company or brand or showroom selling substandard material? Will you ever buy such sub standard material from such a shop or a player? It is important to understand that price competition is always market driven and helpful to market expansion, but product deterioration or tricks only lead to market contraction and rise of substitutes. Whether you are a manufacturer, or a dealer, Genuine product, Profitable selling and Goodwill are only way to sustainable business. Ask Yourself ‘ARE YOU BUILDING A SUCCESSFUL & LASTING ENTERPRISE? Aim for Volumes but getting trapped by reducing price and quality may remove you from the game permanently. I firmly believe, many of you will note and take wiser steps in coming year. Best whishes...

What is Wrong With PVC Foam Board market?
apni baat
Rajiv Parashar, Editor

WPC/PVC demand seems to be idle though being driven through projects queries. Dealers/ Distributors have gone back to plywood focus where as PVC board has become a secondary market driven product. Meanwhile PVC doors frames and PVC laminate demands are growing but Foam board market is struggling due to ones but manufacturers short sightedness.
Y
ear 2016-2017 was said to be a good year for WPC/PVC board manufacturing. There was an excitement among stakeholders such as machinery suppliers, manufacturers, traders, chemical suppliers along with users. It was believed to be charismatic product that has potential to fight in Termite/Borer prone India market and ultimately replace plywood infurniture making. Plywood producers became cautious with PVC arrival and even many decided to enter into manufacturing. Even top plywood brands such as Greenply, Centuryply added it in their portfolio. Brands like Reliance, Sintex etc put their feet in this category apart from old and established players like Jain Irrigation, Echon started exploring India demand, who till then focused on exports. Moving on, come 2018 and India’s WPC/PVC foam board seems to have turned sleepy. Despite manufacturing establishment crossed 100 mark, PVC board market seems to be standstill. Reason is flood of low quality materials and degradation of the product quality, image and its margins for dealers/distributors who have now started loosing their interest. Growing number of complains is forcing away the dealers who are now asking for longer credit period due to product extremely slow pace. Users don’t have any quality guarantee kind of confidence from suppliers simply because there is no acknowledgement by BIS. Plant Breakdowns in manufacturing, lack of technical manpower make ‘consistence quality product’ supply as a challenging task. The struggle keep their confidence low hence they take lesser interest in investing in marketing and promotion. Since major producers are small players, hence they don’t dare to invest in promotion instead use short-cut like supplying low quality materials on lower pricing. WPC/PVC demand seems to be idle though being driven through projects queries. Dealers/Distributors have gone back to plywood focus where as PVC board has become a secondary market driven product. Meanwhile PVC doors frames and PVC laminate demands are growing but Foam board market is struggling due to ones but manufacturers short sightedness. We at Ply Reporter often discuss ‘what went wrong with PVC board market’? Conclusively we hope it shall bounce back as India marketeers never loose any product. In this yearend December issue, ‘7 TURNING POINTS OF 2018’ would remind your memory of happenings in wood panel industry and trade in 2018. The one2one interaction with the ‘pioneer of Decorative Veneer Mr. Suman Shah of Jalaram Veneer’ is worth reading for manufacturers, traders and showroom owners. There are lots of industry and market news in this issue apart from coverage of exhibitions held in Mumbai. Approximately 150 brands related to wood panel surface decor trade were showcased at glittering displays in Mumbai in November where The Ply Reporter team went through every details of product showcased there. Hope you will enjoy the Glimpses and knowledge as always. Happy reading and Good Bye 2018 !

Market deMand Subdued, eMerging coMpetition a big worry
NEWS WATCH
T

he market for plywood and panel products is becoming fierce and throat cutting as reported by Ply Reporter correspondents from across the country. The emergence of new plants in every product category related to wood panel surfacing sector is continuously bringing down the operating margins of every players except a selected few. The market share of almost everyone, be it brand or manufacturer is found to be stagnant or have reported a decline because of increasing number of manufacturers in this segment reflect the recent study conducted by the Ply Reporter and Big Sea Market Research wing. Speaking to manufacturers, the Ply Reporter finds a kind of big unrest due to low installed capacity utilisation in plywood and other wood panel products. The hope for a better market scenario does not look imminent because the reality market is not improving across the markets. The plywood demand in North and West remains subdued as sales per retail counter has noted a drop of 40 to 60 percent’ as commonly accepted by retailers. The on-going survey conducted in MP, Rajasthan and Maharashtra reflected a subdued response on all time evergreen products like particle board and even MDF. The surge in supply has dented the profitability of retailers thus they are once again promoting plywood sales just because of better margin obtained compared to other panel products. The demand in Project sales continue to be stable thus branded segment has maintained its sales numbers. Mr. Suman Shah believes in genuinity, transparency and honesty in business. Showroom named ‘Jalaram’ was the first of such decorative veneer display in India that was conceptualised on these principles by Mr Shah. ‘Jalaram’ is an ideal name for many decorative showroom owners because of its quality offering principle hence a trusted and strong client base. Mr Suman Shah also own veneer manufacturing facility but promotes brand ‘Jalaram’ mostly through his retail showroom. Now with growing awareness in this product category, he is beginning to expand ‘Jalaram’ Veneer brand in dealer’s network pan India. During an interaction with The Ply Reporter, he shared his view on changes happening in veneer market recent time and his future plan. Jalaram is also a house for manufacturing decorative veneers, but market understands, your company is a retail business house. What is your observation? Yes, it is true that Jalaram established in 1978 began as a simple timber & plywood retail shop and in the process grew into a company that set up its own veneer manufacturing unit in Kerala. Even though we have a committed clientele across the nation we presently have a retail outlet only in Mumbai and that is the reason for this perception. Give details about your manufacturing facility, infrastructure, etc. Our Factory, ‘Natural Wood & Veneers Pvt Ltd.’ is spread over 6 acres and located at Vettickal, Mulanthuruthy in Ernakulam district, Kerala. It is 20 kms away from Kochi and an hour drive from Kochi airport. Our factory has a fullfledged slicing & peeling facility and Kiln drying chambers. Within our factory www.plyreporter.com

The waste veneers are dyed, smoked, mismatched and sold with fancy name tags & since they look different from natural veneer, buyers feel they are buying something unusual or exotic. premises, we also house an innovative showroom that showcases a grand variety of wood, veneers and floorings.
Now to increase the availability & accessibility across India we are open to appointing dealers in important cities, the first being in Indore & second a showroom at our factory premises in Kochi. If anyone wants to become dealer of Jalaram Veneer, what is the criteria? How could he reach to you? The criteria is very simple. One needs to have a midsize showroom, maintain some stock, should be sincere and most importantly believe in our philosophy which is honesty, genuinity& transparency. With emails & WhatsApp anyone can reach us easily.
Market views that Jalaram veneer is costly, what is your comment? When people are not comparing an apple to an apple, when 0.35mm veneer is compared to a 0.5mm thick face veneer and when a look alike engineered veneer is compared to our natural veneer then they will find it expensive. We would like to inform you that there are many factors which decide the prices of the veneers such as thickness of the veneer, the species of wood, aesthetic beauty of the veneer, quality of the plywood, size of the lots and the grade. What change do you observe in Veneer market during last 5 years?
In spite of new products being introduced every day the demand for natural products such as stone, marble, wood & veneers will always remain. The demand is definitely on the rise as with travel, exposure and awareness of the product people are looking at better interiors and bigger spaces which will provide a growing demand for decorative veneers.
In the last 5 years we have seen all sorts of lowgrade veneers being accepted in the market. The waste veneers are dyed, smoked, mismatched and sold with fancy name tags & since they look different from natural veneer, buyers feel they are buying something unusual or exotic. Since neither the customers nor most of the dealers are aware or knowledgeable of different species, such products easily find buyers and they think they are buying something different & unusual. How do you see the emergence of some trading brand in this market? Natural veneers sold under brand names can be important if they maintain the quality & sell with the original botanical names & maintaining the original grading systems. www.plyreporter.com

Why would not you spread Jalaram Veneer brand network pan India, although you have huge manufacturing facility, sustainable quality, good range and expertise in veneer selection? What next?
