DISTRIBUTION POLICY IS CRUCIAL! THINK THRICE!

Editorial

Pragat Dvivedi, Founder Editor

20

Excessive production capacity has disturbed the laminate manufacturing & distribution earnings and the same is expected in plywood which is the biggest earning contributor to the retailers, whole sellers and even manufacturers. The new license issued in Uttar Pradesh are estimated to result in new 300-400 hot presses in next 2 years for plywood. This huge addition will further pressure the entire trade and thus cause disturbance in the chain across all the levels.

W

hat the Plywood Industry witnessing today is the greatest confusion of all times. Choosing to go with a “DISTRIBUTOR’ or RETAILER” has become confusing for manufacturers although more people are trying to approach the retailers directly. In the past, there has not been any need for manufacturers to sell directly to retailers nor to the whole sellers/ distributors wanted it to slip this way. But at present, the supply has gone 3 times above demand causing severe damage to the market practices and payment etiquettes. This turning of situation had repeatedly been reminded by The Ply Reporter to the industry - ‘ALWAYS DO YOUR HOME WORK BEFORE PUTTING UP A NEW UNIT OR ADDING CAPACITY.’ The excess supply diminishes the value of the product, eventually the whole product chain suffers. The not so perfect yet the perfect example is the season when onions or tomatoes or any vegetable become very costly or scarcely available, its taste great to consumers, Farmers earn and whole sellers too earn well but when there is excessive production, the crop loses its attraction, value and even taste, with that profitability loses at every end. This leading to a point where few (fittest) survive, others (mediocre) struggle. The Producers’ are directly approaching to retail counters now, is equally desired by the retailers who desperately wanted to remove the middle men in between getting margins. They never got this opportunity as they did not have that strength. Now with the rise in number of manufacturers, over-supply, multiple brand policy, the retailers have got their much awaited opportunity. Off late the cases of delayed payments, rising defaulters and bad rotation of money is largely an outcome of irrational supply from all sides. Manufactures’ direct supply to retailers has indirectly led to blockage of Distributors/suppliers money which was invested on retail counter since years. Whether retailers are able to sustain the direct marriage with factories is a different thing but merely 3.0 % of the retailer aside, 97.0 percent of the retailer’s neither have administrative capability, mindset, nor space and finance to sustain the direct buying from manufacturers. Distributors are needed and will always be in commodity driven, consumer durable segment. Though manufacturers are going against it, but the cases related to payments and various type of disputes are not hidden. This issue has distributors’ views as a lead story which will help many to rectify and improve their market standpoint. For any factory, distribution policy is crucial move and one must think thrice before any move.

Laminate is a designer product, not commodity. Mind it!

apni baat

Manufacturers effort to educate and aware about innovations among retailers, specifiers and users wont be possible instead it is more of a price base market which is actually not, if you speak to a end consumer. A customer considers the value of creativity and happy to pay its cost and stay in feel-good factor, that is why a reasonably informed customer choose better designer material over cheap looking laminate sheet. Other imported designers and highlighters surface decor products for interior application are still growing and doing well despite of the cost and if it is so why to hurry or race in dropping prices?

I

f I am not wrong, what we see today is happening for the first time in Indian Decorative Laminates Industry that there is a race among producers for reducing prices. Everyone was talking about the other brand that how much did he reduced? Distributors tried for maximum reduction and manufacturers felt that the price reduction would be only way to sustain in HPL business. Although few brands intact with their present pricing structure and keep focus on presentation, innovation and marketing strategies etc, but majority of producers reduced the prices. It was good for a retailer but very surprising and confusing for many. The changing trend may be considered as good by few but we disagree. Laminate is a surface design product; it is a kind of lifestyle material for making your furniture elegant, attractive and putting WOW factor. It creates value to your home interiors, adds beauty and warmth in your living experience, hence the focus of manufacturers should be more on giving innovative and quality products so that users feel pampered, relaxed and highly satisfied after applying the laminates in their home and offices. Just a year ago, good designed non folder laminates were dominating over even known brands in cities like Pune, Surat, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, etc. Other imported designers and highlighters surface decor products for interior application are still growing and doing well despite of the cost and if it is so why to hurry or race in dropping prices? Market has variety of imported designer sheets, which having no guarantee of quality and certifications, but it is being offered at Rs 100 per sq ft and this materials easily finds customers here but decorative laminates have packed with all features of innovation, quality, certification, credit and guarantee but it struggles to get approx Rs 25 per sq ft price. This situation arises because we have started considering Decorative Laminates as commodity products, but happily it is never a commodity material. If one enters in this business, considering HPL is faster money making business, then he is wrong. Maintaining serenity of innovation, creativity, right marketing tools and with right customer targets, one will certainly earn brand name, respect and money as well in long term. This February issue has published a ‘Descriptive Reportage’ on ‘ARE DISTRIBUTORS LOOSING THEIR IMPORTANCE?’, a worth read story based on recent research of Ply Reporter and BSMR team on plywood industry and trade. The one 2 one interaction with Mr. Mohiyuddin Ashfaq, the Director of an emerging brand in south India -TROJAN PLYWOOD, is interesting read. A feature report on ‘Charm and Priority of installing Core Veneer Composer’ elaborates the present situation of plywood industry. Besides, there are lots of market reports, new product updates, technical feature, are published in this issue. The issue is followed by ‘THE PLY REPORTER’S DELHIWOOD SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT’; assure your presence and write to us. Enjoy reading, keep sending your feed back !

Advantage of offering Calibrated plywood

T

NEWS WATCH

he charm of Calibrated Plywood has been seen in India since last 4 years, when its demand created by furniture manufacturers for making cabinet and shutters. The users are acknowledging the use of this plywood in furniture, beds, kitchen cabinetries, wardrobes, sofas thus boosting the queries of plywood without any thickness variation. The growth in Kitchen producing furniture companies, which supply to Kitchen to residential customers, has been fueling demand and queries of 16 mm calibrated plywood in huge quantities.

28

4 years before the plywood industry has been unable to deliver real ‘Calibrated Plywood’ that can be smoothly used by in furniture making category thus the suppliers are importing such plywood from China, Indonesia and Russia. But, so far a number of plywood producers have created proper set up to produce ‘Calibrated Plywood’. As per market report a dozen of Indian brands have been offering Real Calibrated plywood from 6 mm to 25 mm thicknesses. A dealer from Bangalore says that he gets extra price for its calibrated plywood range because its demand is improving day to day. He says that all plywood having similar raw materials, but if it is calibrated properly, it has extra advantage, and customers pay extra for this. Plywood uses have been growing among furniture manufacturers, hence they are looking for calibrated plywood in all thicknesses. According to an estimate, Indian Kitchen/Furniture Industry is ready and adoptive for real calibrated plywood. A survey among OEMs and Kitchen makers clearly hinted the possible opportunity for this product segment. Calibrated plywood bears uniform thickness all across which is achieved by calibrating it in modern high end machines. Uniform thickness all around the ply makes it ideal panel product for use by mechanized automated furniture manufacturers. Smooth surface facilitates an excellent easiness for post lamination and post forming for making furniture, inserts and modular items.

The Ply Reporter February 2019

We have been keeping pace with the developments in the market and have ensured that we continued to grow during FY 2018-19, despite challenges. We remain optimistic that the coming months of the last quarter of this FY, and the FY ahead in 2019-20, will further boost our prospects for all-round growth. How has GST implementation affected your Company? The GST implementation has been a welcome, positive, step in the right direction. Doubtless, this will go a long way in strengthening and benefitting the organized sector. This is although traders across the market spectrum have been taking their own time to get used to the new system. Your product range and which one your product is major contributor to your growth? Among our premium brands of Plywood, we offer Trojan Signature and Trojan Platinum products to our luxury interiors related and quality-sensitive segments. For market segments where quality-sensitivity goes side by side with price-sensitivity, we offer our Trojan Gold and Trojan Classic sub brands, whereas for areas where price is the single biggest concern, we offer Troy Gold and Troy Silver. Among these sub brands, it has been Trojan Classic that has contributed to our growth stability in recent months. What is the speciality of your plywood product for customers? One key highlight of our premium products is that they exceed IS: 710 specifications and that they are all fully calibrated from 6mm thickness upwards. Life time warranty backed by a Guarantee Card, uniform strength, structural balance, Quad-press technology and the unique Trojan core-protection technology which ensures that our products are resistant to both, termites and borers, are all welcome qualities as far as a designer is concerned. Great tensile strength has to be coupled with incredible bonding qualities. We have an in-house resin manufacturing unit and R& D facility that makes the best synthetic resins – another key quality which the careful designer seeks to ensure in his choice of plywood.

The market in India is slowly granting acceptance to brands and semi-brands working with regular sales teams, better back-up technology and wider network. At Trojan, we hope to maintain our balance in controlling cost, for good product quality combined with well-considered promotional expenditure. We are sure that over a period of time, it will be the organized sectors with a level playing field that will benefit. in terms of quality and brand value. Along with all other major brands, it is among the fastest developing brands in south India. What are the advantages of making calibrated plywood? Are you offering calibrated plywood in all thicknesses? If yes, then why would that be so from a purely technical perspective? Calibrated plywood provides for uniform thickness all across the panel. This is achieved by calibrating it in modern high-end imported plywood calibrator machines. The singular advantage granted by ply boards having uniform thickness is that this quality makes them ideal panel products for use by fully mechanized and automated furniture manufacturing units whose numbers are growing by the day. Customer, too, are becoming more aware of the benefits of having calibrated plywood. At Trojan, we had realised this advantage quite early on, and as such, have made investments towards, and have completed commissioning of, state-of-the-art calibrator machinery during FY 2016-17 itself. Today, we bring out plywood as calibrated for all thicknesses above 6 mm.

Trojan Plywood brand has been getting popular in the south Indian market. Can you rate your brand among top five brands in southern plywood market?

Present manufacturing capacity and turnover of Trojan plywood?

As of today, we would not be exaggerating if we consider Trojan Plywood to be the very best in the market

The Plywood-Laminate and entire wood panel industry have always been dominated by distributors. The choice of a distributors and their sales network have been a crucial move for any company to ensure the success of its brand. The Ply Reporter surveys have repeatedly found sales numbers in favor of mighty, wealthy and established distributors since beginning of the publication in 2001. But 2018 onwards, we are witnessing, many manufacturers talking about direct selling to retailers. The Ply Reporter planned to conduct an interactive article on the subject where we sought the views of various top distributors on the subject “Is the direct retailers’ preference is somewhere undermining the role of distributors?” This interactive-market based article will be published in continuation in coming months as we at (Ply Reporter & Big Sea Market Research) are getting deeper to find the degree of this change and its reasons. This article may be a very crucial document for many of such companies who are in wood panel manufacturing and entrepreneurs who are retailers or whole sellers.

The role of distributors has always been pivotal and defining for a brand in any product in consumer durable product segment. Looking at entire building material product category market, even in present times, the role of distributors remains fairly strong and even dominating. But what appears is, the dynamics is being challenged by the change indemand- supply status. Particularly in plywood and decorative laminate segment their importance and role is often being discussed at manufacturers’ level where Ply Reporter interacts. The logic made by manufacturers is ‘distributors role is just limited to be the financer where they are appointed for the safety of payments and volumes. Manufacturers often comment that ‘in present scenario, distributors are neither generating volumes nor giving timely payments. On the contrary few producers advocate the ‘direct retailer’ model. They feel, many Retailers have good financial capacity who can buy truck loads and are

The change in market dynamics is purely induced by over supply and is set to cause profit disruption at every level. The oversupply scenario has compelled to disturb the entire stakeholder chain and trust, that was the strong thread of Plywood Industry and trade since decades. Manufacturers don’t have option to depend on Distributors, hence they are looking for those counters or even small retailers, who can give them sustainable sales and margins, but is it happening?
