2018 is expected to be better but not everything is rosy
Editorial

Year 2018 will witness increase in manufacturing cost, fall in margins and high requirement of capital in books. Year 2018 is expected to be a better year compared to last year in terms of demand but shall need capital, team building and higher spent on marketing and branding.
W
elcome to the year of hope and beginning of a new growth cycle. The retarding effects of GST, DEMO & RERA are still present but market recovery and growth is expected, especially from the first quarter of FY 2018-19. Past one and half year have been riddled with slowdown, liquidity crunch, reforms led uncertainty in general where building materials segment is worst affected. Despite ofextremely slow demand in Wood, Panel and Decorative materials category, a huge capacity addition has taken place in this segment thus Year 2018 is set to witness a storm of competition in wood, panels and decorative surfaces category. In 2018, my special caution and advice goes for MDF enthusiast who think that putting up an MDF plant is a guaranteed success formula. The truth is, excessive supply such as 8000 cbm a day will be a sudden overdose against an estimated demand of 3500 cbm (expected). This will lead to unexpected price cuts hence choking the margins and increasing need of working capital in near period. MDF market is expected to grow at the rate of 20-22%, thanks to growing uses in surfacing, Jaali, boxes, replacement of 6 mm, replacement of cheap plywood but it does not mean there is big scope of profit in near 2-3 year terms. Hence if anyone expects MDF industry as a lucrative option, must do his home-work better.
“2018 is the year for organised players, active retailers and able sales professionals!” The tsunami of new Plywood plants and capacity addons is another big ‘disruption’ building up, which might hit ‘very hard’ to inefficient, unorganised and poor-quality ply-board manufacturers. The price rise of poplar and eucalyptus will also suffocate the financially weak players. Year 2018 will witness increase in manufacturing cost, fall in margins and high requirement of capital in books. Year 2018 is expected to be a better year compared to last year in terms of demand but shall need capital, team building and higher spent on marketing and branding.
“I read The Ply Reporter line by line,” he said Any manufacturing should be backed up with research on supply and demand. Becoming organised in Distribution holds plenty of possibilities. Year 2018 will offer bright prospects for organised distribution and focused retailing. Entering in furniture manufacturing business in 2018 could be rewarding in coming years. The Ply Reporter believes, 2018 will offer demand opportunities from government and corporate sector hence branded segment will have good time. On the occasion of new year, I wish ‘Manufacturers of Plywood, Laminates & Decorative veneers include the payment cycle and interest part in their calculation and check credibility before offering material in desperation’. The Ply Reporter receives a lot of good & interesting reviews but I remember only a few. A growing manufacturer and a long time advertiser have recently commented that he reads ‘The Ply Reporter’ line by line. I really liked the last 3 words, “line by line’. What can be more motivating for us to see readers’ & advertisers’ increasing faith on Ply Reporter year after year? Opinions like these are the best New Year gifts for Team Ply Reporter. Happy New Year!

Skilled manpower Shortage, a growing worry!
apni baat
Rajiv Parashar, Editor

Data suggests that the entire wood panel, decorative and PVC sector are making big losses may be in tune of 300-400 cr annually due to shortage of skilled manpower and lacking of able technical heads. Increasing production of B-grade materials, growing overhead cost and under utilization of installed capacity is good enough to justify the numbers. If not, your crores and crores of investment will be under utilized, led to halt your further growth.
E
ntire Indian wood panel & plywood, decorative laminates, doors, WPC/PVC, furniture and kitchen manufacturing sectors are adding to their production capacity year on year. Report says that more than 200 plywood presses are being added in ply, MDF and Particle manufacturing capacity is growing, HPL and WPC on the same way apart from addition of various next generation engineered doors units. Furniture and kitchen sectors are also expanding their production capacity etc but all are ignoring a big issue. Do the companies know that how and from where would they find skilled manpower for smooth running of their operation. Ply Reporter study finds that Plywood and Laminate industry requires approx. 1500 chemists for their operation but the industry is having around 450 chemists. IPRITI and FRI are training not more than 100 technical people every year among them just 30 percent candidates remain as technical people involved in production in this industry. Besides chemists, the sector also requires approx. 25000 technical operators for running presses, peeling machines, sanding machines, finishing and other purpose. BSMR survey suggests that entire wood panel, HPL, LPL, Doors, WPC/PVC requires thousands of trained and skilled manpower for smooth functioning of operation and maintain their growth. Government, Skill Development Council and Industry Associations should take this issue on priority if they want further growth in their industry and product application. They should raise their manufacturing environment standard and approach B. Tech colleges, offer training of basic of their manufacturing technique and employ them. The Present Body like IPIRTI and FRI should also expand their presence, create awareness to attract more students for learning. There is an immediate need to open their training centres in Lucknow, Yamunanagar, Gandhidham and Perumbavoor to keep the industry depending on these institutions. HPL, WPC and Furniture related industry and their Associations should also work in same direction to generate more skilled people. If not, your crores and crores of investment will be under utilized, led to halt your further growth. This, January 2018 issue, is very much important for entire wood panel industry and trade, because it presents forecast for whole 2018 titles as ‘POSSIBILITIES OF 2018’, a well research analysis on the future of Plywood, Timber, Market, DemandSupply, HPL, MDF & PB, WPC & PVC, Decorative Veneers, ACP etc. It is fact that we print such analysis every year in January issue, which has been striking 90-95 % similarity with actual happenings in fact. The Ply Reporter is only Wood Panel trade magazine, which work hard to publish such reports on basis of its extensive survey and deep research work. Besides, the issue has lots of market updates, product information, new launching, trade happenings etc. Wishing all of you a happy and prosperous New Year 2018 !

POSSIBILITIES In 2018 With great optimism and combined efforts from a learned and research oriented team, The Ply Reporter is here with its predicted possibilities for the year 2018. Based on updated reports right from the market the team has been able to make striking 95.0 % of its predictions last year.
PossibiliTies 2018
The continuous movement and passion to keep hang on the pulse of dealers, retailers, stockiest, importers, contractors, furniture makers and designers across the country has given certain hints that we would like to share on the occasion of the new year 2018. The spill-over effect of DEMO, RERA and GST had a dramatic impact on housing and building materials in 2017. Now, with RERA and GST settling down, the realty sector is ready to embrace 2018 on a better show hope. Plywood suPPly to rise, exceed demand, Profits to droP
I
possibilities 2018
n 2018, The plywood manufacturing capacity is set to rise by 25-30 percent thanks to new factories and expansions taking place at various places in North India. Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh shall witness beginning of around 150-200 new units within 2018 which will certainly flood over the market compared to anticipated demand. The pressure on sales will push the market towards “Buyers’ market” hence there will be a drop-in price of finished goods specially after May 2018.
30
The plywood production capacity in Haryana alone is about to witness an increase of 35 percent during 2018. The numbers will further blow up after freeing up of license in UP, hopefully in January month of 2018 itself. The addition in number of factories in UP will take time but would create a pressure build up on existing establishments involved in distribution and manufacturing. The small and mid-segment factories will have to spend more to sustain in the growing competition during 2018 and 2019 because of huge flow of plywood, boards and doors in markets. Those who are entering in plywood manufacturing with a notion of decent profit-making sector will confront the reality by 2018 year end.

In a meeting held in Yamunanagar, Haryana Plywood Manufacturers Association reasoned that the raw materials prices such as Formaldehyde, phenol, wood, and urea have gone up, hence the prices of finished good such as plywood, block boards and doors are to be increased by 5 percent and 12mm film faced plywood by Rs. 2 per square feet. Mr. J K Bihani, Secretary of Association informed that the new rates are being implemented from January 1, 2018. Punjab Plywood Manufacturers Association (PPMA) has also announced to increase the prices of finished plywood products by 5 percent from January 1, 2018. The meeting held in Ludhiana, was presided by Mr. Ashok Juneja, Chairman and Mr. Inderjeet Singh Sohal, President, and attended by more than 25 producers. Delhi-NCR Plywood manufacturers Association is also decided to increase the prices due to high input cost due to exaggerating raw material costs. “The increasing input cost has left us with no other option but to increase the cost of end product. We are forced to pass on the burden to the consumers,” said Mr. Juneja, Chairman of the PPMA. According to another plywood manufacturer, a significant portion of the raw material, such as pine timber, which gives finishing to the plywood, is imported and a minor fluctuation in the dollar also affects the input cost.

Decorative Laminate Price increases by rs. 15-45 Per sheet

igh cost of phenol, formaldehyde and melamine has badly affected the prices of decorative laminates sheets for consumers. According to industry and trade report, the prices of 1 mm laminate have gone up by up to Rs. 40-45 per sheets, whereas 0.92 mm, 0.8 mm, door skin laminates and liner grade prices have increased by Rs. 35, Rs. 25, Rs. 20 and Rs. 15 respectively. Decorative Laminates producers opined that the prices of phenol have increased more than 15 percent in November – December and it keeps increasing regularly, forcing them to pass this burden to market. Market sources confirmed that the distributors had received indication of price rise with affect from December 25, 2017 from their respective supplying companies and they have also conveyed the same to their dealers and consumers. Market sources also confirmed that the new rates might be implemented from first week of January, because the decision of price rise is taken unanimously by pan India decorative laminates producers. A laminate producer says that there is a huge competition in decorative laminate market because of increasing number of producers leading to over supply scenario, hence they are forced to do business on little profit margin. They do not have capacity to observe any price rise in raw materials cost, so they are compelled to pass this burden to the consumers. It is reported that India has been adding 25 to 30 lacs sheets per month capacity every year since last 7 years, and this is also following the same patterns because more than 2 dozens presses are reported to start in 2018.
