2019: Gear up to compete fierce
Editorial

The rise in competition index for wood panel industry and trade parallely offers threats and negative outlook for small and unorganized companies or those who are still not taking their enterprise seriously. 2019 will establish the ‘importance of accounted cash flow, adequate marketing strategy, spending and need of efficient sales professionals’ up to an extent that was never felt needed before.
T
he new year 2019 hold prospects, opportunities and plenty of scope for fit, focused and hardworking companies, distributors and dealers. The new year is the starting time for all entrepreneurs including retailers who are ready to go out of their comfort zone for sales and exploring new markets. Presently the entire building material segment is facing weak demand and payment worries apart from rapid change in trade buying practices. Cheque has become the new cash hence organized brands are gaining preference. With merely 14.0 % market share in value terms, the plywood category has plenty of room for growth to serious quality conscious branded player. The rise in raw material prices, huge production output will lead to competition and consolidation during 2019. Branded companies will continue to gain apart from growth of new players seeking branded status. In plywood product category, the combination of clarity, effort and capital required to be called as brand, is so rare that except a few counted names the 30,000 crore plywood industry still awaits brave and ambitious entrepreneurs who make their way to top 5 slot. The acceptance of branded product is anticipated to grow with narrowing gap of price between GST paid and non GST attracting product. Year 2019 is set to be the beginning of rigorous and hardworking era hence gear up to compete fierce. In 2019, It is also hoped that GST slab will come down and provide more gain to branded players as the gap between branded and unbranded will further narrow down. With ease in financing options from banks and NBFC’s for SMEs and MSMEs, I strongly believe an ease in liquidity in second half of 2019. The Election year always carry a drifted business mood for around 3 to 4 months time, that means during ‘April to June’, large projects and big business decisions will be under wait and watch mode. The remaining effective 9 months of working period will be full of surprises from central government and high optimism will keep nation mood positive. LETS WELCOME A BRIGHT & PRSPEROUS NEW YEAR…

Now in the changing scenario the industry seeks sensible and hardworking sales people who can explore and establish the product with dedication and responsibility. The visible fact is that plywood and laminate industry lack good and able people. Not only mid segment but big companies too lack responsible Sales Personals. Entire wood panel, plywood, surface décor products, PVC, ACP etc may cross a turnover of approx Rs. 50 thousand crore.
W
ith changing time, Indian wood panel industry and trade is becoming organized, adopting professional approach and targeting end consumer’s needs. The industry needs are rapidly changing unlike before when only production was good enough. They require all available tools to reach out dealers, retailers, projects, influencers, contractors and consumers now. Post GST, large number of mid level industries are transforming to adopt formal business model which are spearheaded by next generation youngsters who have joined the company, and understand the need of marketing, discuss growth ideas and do not fear to spend. Just 6 years back, it was not at all easy to convince a mid level wood and decorative panel producers for advertising, promotion and team building; but now it’s different. Earlier they had fear in releasing ads, as officials might target them through ads but no more. Now companies boldly advertise, and dare to plan for sales team and promotion to develop new markets. They understand the value of quality, company policies and are ready to effort for spreading brands among users and influencers. 50 thousand crore but the availability of good people is very less. There is considerable size of industry and everyone is looking for sustainable business plan and people who can take the charge and hit the bull’s eyes. Thus the role of Sale Personnel is becoming bigger and important with the need of branding. They must be growth oriented, able to plan and expand companies business to provide needed profit margins in lieu of asking only reduction of prices of finished goods. If Sales Personnel understand their responsibility, give results not reason, utilize their 100 % time, energy and efforts with dedication, then only they can achieve own growth with company sales growth. The time is changing and scenario hint that sales people must take responsibility and ownership to perform at best and to compete in todays crowded market. This New Year January 2019 special issue is must read as there is ‘Quotes of visionary leaders of our industry’ from interviews published in the Ply Reporter in 2018. Our research wing BSMR’s research based ‘Predictions for 2019 in wood panel sector’ may be a big help for entire industry and trade people to plan their strategy for this year and ahead. A quick chat with MD of Duro Ply Mr. Jaydeep Chitalangia on change of company identity into new, number of brief news reports, product launches, market reports and happenings have also been published in this issue. Wishing all of you a Happy and Prosperous New Year 2019!

PoPlar Prices Pain again, racing UPward
P
NEWS WATCH
oplar is once again back on rising spree. There was a brief pause in poplar prices due to demand and supply mismatch during mid-November to mid-December but soon it is back to ascending root. Increasing price of Poplar logs is painful for plywood manufacturing units as the prices for finished goods are not increasing. There has been almost a 50 % jump in last one year for poplar where as eucalyptus has noted a marginal rise.
28
The prices were started escalating from beginning of this year, which has been strengthening almost every month. The prices are reported to be growing in every region be it Yamuna Nagar, Punjab, UP East, UP West, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan or Delhi-NCR region. In December alone, the Poplar logs prices have witnessed a jump of Rs 150 per quintal thus, increasing the core veneer cost by 12 to 15 percent. Industry says that it has been getting difficult for them to offer Full Poplar Ply in old rates, thus they are compelled to increase prices. Industry sources also confirm that ‘All Poplar Ply’ has acquired significant market share in last 3 years when the prices of Poplar reached to bottom level, hence many dealers want to buy this range but it is tough for companies to supply in old rates. Although, ‘All Poplar Ply’ prices were up by 15 to 20% in last one year depending on face veneer applied on this. But producers are not much interested to supply this range in coming time because Eucalyptus prices become lesser than Poplar and many producers are converting from ‘Alternate Ply’ to ‘All Poplar Ply’. Manufacturers say that payment and demand both are worrisome at present, hence selling ‘All Poplar Ply’ is comparatively easy. We get advance against these materials as well. As per industry people, ‘All Poplar Ply’ is like a survival pill for many small and unorganized plywood producers of Haryana and Punjab.

Korea based Cba eyes huge opportunity in indian deCor industry IntervIew
Mr Thomas Yi, Head of Operations Asia, CBA AG, Switzerland

The decor industry in India is rapidly growing with rapid economical development and increasing prosperity of people of the nation. The increasing awareness about these products and its applications among people has also boost the demand of diverse range of decor products. As of now the demand is coming from both the high end to low end segments in the country. The diversity of demands has attracted Korea based CBA AG, the company which is a facilitator of diverse range of decor products such as charcoal, flooring, panelling etc having collaboration with a number of manufacturing establishments based at Korea. CBA’s India operation is headed by Heten Oza who has been closely working with the industry fraternity across pan India since the last 25 years. In a one 2 one interaction with the Ply Reporter, Mr Thomas Yi, Head of Operations Asia, CBA (Cross Border Associates) AG, Switzerland talked about their objective, strengths and initiatives for their offerings in India. Here is snapshot of the conversation. www.plyreporter.com
According to my observation India will be the biggest economy by 2030 however as of now it is developing rapidly. I have never seen such a diverse market in terms of product offering. So, India needs diverse range from high price to low price that is not happening in any country around the world.
Heten Oza has been closely working with the industry fraternity across pan India since the last 25 years. and different format planks, tiles etc. We have such a vast and in-depth network in Korea, we can actually go with any of the manufacturers to the press and design specifications. How do you create designs, because you are not manufacturers?
Which kind of products are you offering in India? Our company name is CBA AG in which CBA represents Cross Border Associates. We saw lot of development in India in terms of wall decor and coverings, face panel, charcoal. Some of the imported highlighters like face panel in charcoal is developing as a highlighter. We would like to bring in more such products. At the moment we are offering Charcoal panels. CBA AG is not manufacturers, in a way we are facilitator of Charcoal. We have an exclusive arrangement with the Korean factories. We also are offering LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tiles) flooring from 2mm to 5mm with interlocking, loose layer
Of course, we do not create designs. We are a consulting facilitator and give them feedback. We had most of the existing importers’ catalogue. We also maintained data for that and core of those catalogues we have in our position that is given to designers. We don’t have designers in hand as well but we consult them. We present those catalogues before customers and let them choose their choice, and if required, customise the product design according to the customer’s choice. Many companies are offering Charcoal panels in India, so what is the difference between their’s and your offerings? The product has been started from Korea. In terms of actual products and its designs, these are being driven by people. They want to see new designs; however we can work on that with them in plant at Korea. So we are diverse in designs and connect price wise also as we are subsidised www.plyreporter.com

Mr. Rajesh Mittal,
MD, Greenply Industries Ltd
“In coming years due to many factors Gurjan timber will probably become obsolete, hence plywood manufacturers have to shift from Gurjan to other face veneers like PQ, Okume, Reckon, Makai etc. The shift will not impact the branded plywood because the required technical specification of plywood will not change”

The Future
Hkfo’; ds ckjs esa
We expect a considerable growth in plywood by 10-12 % during next 2 years followed by higher growth of 15-18% in FY 2021 to FY 2023 in plywood category. It shall be largely led by market share gains from the unorganized sector and gradual recovery in real estate sector.I clearly see that furniture industry as a whole will continue to grow.

On GST, E-way billing impact GST and E-Way bill implementation will enforce stricter compliance on the unorganized sector. It will be positive for organized players as it enables them to compete on a more level playing field.

I strongly feel that no dealer wants to sell something where quality of the products and its after sales service are not certain. Dealer will any day choose a brand provided they get good margin in the same. In today’s market environment, consumers have become aware about the quality features of different products and they are getting more inclined towards buying the right quality product at the right price. Hence from growth perspective dealer’s priority will always be to sell branded products.
