‘Gurjan is Gurjan’ but, is it a wise choice?

Editorial

Pragat Dvivedi, Founder Editor

Okoume is directly saving Rs 2 psf and relief from harassment in procurement for all. Sarda Plywood and Green Ply have shifted their entire production to new face specie where as other top brands too have began using Okoume face regularly. Wise ones are shifting because there is need and logic as well.

‘G

urjan cannot be replaced, Gurjan is Gurjan” is a common line we hear but when logically put, Gurjan is not even close to other face veneer species in terms of Price, Availability and passing Quality tests. The only factor still working for few is the perception or “Gurjan is Gurjan” phrase. If this line has not been a myth, Companies who invested heavily in Myanmar 3-4 years ago would have been running and supplying Gurjan face. Unfortunately, 9 out 10 are shut who went with a dream called ‘Gurjan’. The face traders in India needed ‘Gurjan’ word to remain in business but unfortunately Indonesia and China too could not fulfill the needs. Amidst struggles and uncertainty for face, Okume emerged as a hope. We at Ply Reporter too believed that a timber that has characteristics like Gurjan is absolutely fit for Plywood making, specially the way Indian market perceives strength with face veneer color. But when Gurjan prices crossed 1300$ this year which was around 700 $, three years ago, that too with almost no availability and very poor timber quality, Gurjan failed itself to be a sustainable face further. That is when we at the Ply Reporter felt the need of strong awareness campaign for new substitute face veneer and began series of seminars on Okoume technical trials in plywood clusters. The cost component of Gurjan in Plywood (if you are lucky to get 1-2 containers) crossed 22-23% that is unviable and unsustainable as it shall remain below 7-8 % as a practice (also because there is no enhancement in strength or durability of the product because of Face). Along with writing about species from P&G, PL, PQ, Makai, Recon etc., the Ply Reporter has also been continuously writing about need of adopting new face to all manufacturers together so that market can shift to a logical, suitable and sustainable face. When we saw that Gabon, has norms to ensure sustainable supply of Okaume to meet India demand for face in tune to 1400 containers a month and big companies entering Gabon SEZ in veneer business, we started awareness seminars for Okaume face veneer that was held in Haryana, UP, Kerala and is scheduled to be held in Punjab. As a result many manufacturers have benefited and many are running their trials. Hundreds of ply manufacturers have sent massages-calls that trials are reaching to success and retailers too are accepting it. Okoume is directly saving Rs 2 psf and relief from harassment in procurement for all. Sarda Plywood and Green Ply have shifted their entire production to new face specie where as other top brands too have began using Okoume face regularly. Wise ones are shifting because there is need and logic as well. Probably that is why China shifted to Okaume a decade ago but we are still discussing and paying heavy price. ‘Gurjan will remain Gurjan’ but availability? And Price? The introspection must be done. It may be there for a few more months with a few manufacturers but ultimately time has come to use a FACE that justify its price and needs. It is time to be practical and offer sustainable product at affordable and logical pricing. Decision is yours…

Best Wishes

Doors manufacturing:

Many door producers are reportedly very hesitant in supplying doors to projects because of stricter quality norms but fear of default in payments and uncertainty in real estate is holding them to supply to builders/contractors. Seeing from a different perspective it is giving a fair opportunity to new suppliers who can cross check financial strength of a builder firm and supply materials along with quality because many builders are running under deadline to deliver their projects on time.

T

he Ply Reporter is coming up with ‘DOORS SPECIAL ISSUE’ for which our intensive market, industry and product research is going on since 5 months. We are in process of analyzing every nook and corner of door sector to tap the changes that has happened during last decade. The entire door segment includes approximately 1400 manufacturer of flush doors, molded panel doors, laminated doors, membrane doors, veneered doors, solid wood doors, aluminum doors, WPC/PVC doors, fire rated doors, Pre-hung finished doors, Door + Frame with complete solution etc. All doors categories have potential and growing Year on year where as flush door is still largely sold product in door category. Our findings indicate that India is set to offer huge growth potential in Pre hung doors and fire rated doors. Fire rated doors are not yet a very popular or focused category in India because it lacks awareness, hence the demand. Around 10 to 12 brands are offering fire rated doors in India but there is no unanimous technology for producing such doors and different companies having its own technology and manufacturing parameters. The users and dealers are also not much aware about FR Doors range and they come to know, when they find special specification in particular projects queries mainly from government projects and high rise building in metro cities. Seeing fire hazards in modern living and rise in vertical living, our findings show that it is wonderfull doors product for people safety if producers and dealers drive awareness among users about its benefits. If India is able to produce such doors in huge volume, they can find market prospect overseas as well. It is an area we believe is needed a push, investment from manufacturers in technology and awareness which will help them to grow a product category and profits along with people’s safety. At present, RERA has helped the demand of quality doors from organized sector, and producers shall be able to gain by standardizing sizes and thickness of doors. Our door issue is taking more than estimated time because the sector is highly scattered, unorganized and do not have standardization. In fact that is why there is opportunity too. This June issue is worthy read for decorative veneers, laminates, MDF, Shuttering ply, doors, plywood, face veneer, timber, ACP sector people because there are lots of reports based on research are being featured, which is an indicator of your business plan. The One2one interaction with Mr. Mahendra Gala, Director of Timex Plywood about his new technology, Mr. Nikhil Arora, Director of Virgo AluminumComposite Panels about commencement of production of his new ACP plant in Gujarat and with the directors of Yamuna Nagar Based Shree Jagdamba Panel on his new state of art technology plant for construction & transport sector plywood have also been published. The successful events of The Ply Reporter’s ‘Talk of the Town series Seminar’ on ‘Possibilities of New Face Veneer’ held in Kerala, International Meet of Amulya Mica in Dubai and many others industry and trade events have been covered in this issue. MDF proDuction capacity Doubles, expect steaDy growth in DeManD

W

NEWS WATCH

ith commencement of commercial production of Balaji Action Tesa at Uttarakhand and Green Panel at Andhra Pradesh, the production capacity of MDF in India is almost double now. Action Tesa has begun commercial production from 1st April this year, which is around 800 cubic meters with European manufacturing line from Siempelkamp. The supplier MDF line to Green Panel, Dieffenbacher announced the production of first board in April, which has 1200 cubic meters capacity per day.

28

It is noted that after beginning of Century Ply MDF unit in Punjab, the total installed capacity touched around 2300 cbm per day. Now with addition of the new two mega capacity plants India has almost doubled its manufacturing capacity in MDF. Producers and suppliers are expecting that this product will replace some of the portion of cheaper grade plywood in future and accordingly moving ahead but they are also sure that it will take time. A considerable amount of import of over Rs 500 crore/annum is an addition to the existing market. MDF is steadily entering into many interior décor purposes such as decoration, flooring, carcases, shutters, wardrobes, grills, racks etc. Manufacturers view that growth is expected in MDF due to rise in application of material in surfacing, partition and furniture making. The development work from government departments and PSUs and acceptance of MDF is also going to help the boost in demand in this segment. The leading manufacturers in the country believe that MDF growth shall remain steady during next three years because of rise in availability and softening of prices. The Ply reporter data analysis indicate that MDF shall witness growth of 19-21 percent during next three years compared to 10 to 12 percent growth in plywood segment.

Edited excerpts. Virgo group is diversified into ACP manufacturing, how would you reach a decision to enter into this sector?

Our overall project is in to 52 acres of land that will have advance production units for Laminates & Aluminum Rolls along with ACP.

Our entry into ACP is a part of our long term strategy. We are in the business of making Aluminum Rolls and coils since last 7 years. We are making 1XXX, 3XXX and 8XXX series in our Aluminum Unit and supplying Aluminum products to many major companies in India. Our foray into ACP therefore is a forward integration of our Aluminum Making Capacities. Based on our experience in Aluminum as well as in decorative spaces, we are confident that we will be able to contribute in the overall growth of ACP industry and raise the new standards of quality and service.

How much is the production capacity and, what is USP of your plant?

Why did you opt Gujarat as manufacturing location? What are infrastructures there? Gujarat is a good location for us looking at its geographic position near the sea making it easy to get the raw material. Also the government policies and environmental factors are best suitable for raising a plant there. We are eyeing Gujarat as one of the main manufacturing locations for all our products in future. www.plyreporter.com

We will be in a capacity to make 25 Lacs sq. feet of ACP in next three months. Our core USP is the quality of our products and manufacturing facilities with all latest technologies. In many of the overseas countries like Dubai, it is now compulsory to use FR Grade ACP. We are going to make FR Grade ACP since beginning which is a very high grade FR product using Halogen Free Chemical and having a fire rating of 2.5 Hours. Also we will be the first company in India to launch A2 Grade FR ACP, equipped with European technology, which is highly noncombustible material and generates negligible smoke. What kind of products do you manufacture? Give brief of any special products do you produce? We are going to manufacture best quality PVDF coating products only with higher coil thickness. The Indian real estate market size is expected to reach USD180 billion by 2020. The housing sector alone contributes 5-6 per cent to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The growth of this sector is well complemented by the growth of the corporate environment and the demand for office space as well as urban and semi-urban accommodations. In the period FY 2008-2020, the market size of this sector is expected to increase at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 11.2 per cent. Retail, Hospitality and Commercial real estate are also growing significantly, providing the muchneeded infrastructure for India’s growing needs. The growth in real estate in India is directly going to increase the demand of ACP products in market. The ACP market is already growing with a CAGR of 10-15%. We are therefore very much positive about growth of ACP market. We want to make users aware about the quality
