Failing payment commitment is pushing manuFacturers to adopt ‘direct retail’

Choosing a supplier on the basis of only rate might have been a successful mantra of the past but today, only this criterion is extremely insufficient for creating sustainable business model. A company offering good quality, genuine specifications, having long term vision, have plans for expanding market, marketing strategies in plan and awareness support to markets, with around 30 days credit period is the way forward. And soon, the entrepreneurs dealing with such companies will find themselves in better situation than others.
A
s a business journalist, my work involves around 20 days of traveling per month, participating in various conferences, meets; involvement in trade association policies, speaking sessions and discussions on topics including products, new market, news analysis and more.
The burning issue dominating these days is about Capital & Payment shortage. Established brands are getting their payments much easier than others. I’m hearing much about delayed payments, disputes & worries. The heaviness is doubled by the ongoing slow demand and oversupply at large. In general, the wood panel players of India are putting the blame on ‘Slow market demand, very slow real estate, the missing banking support, taxation, government policies etc. Panic is across 90% of the market both manufacturing and trading, all fearing for the unknown and uncertainty. The small and mid-sized firms are continuing with their old fashioned work culture of ‘first take order, payments will come automatically if the party is good’. The large firms are of view that ‘first talk about payment, order will automatically come if the party is good’. I have a different opinion about how things should work in both the cases, however it is better leave it to entrepreneurs, manufacturers and traders. They all consider it as part of ‘Evolution, Process & Journey’. But when taxes are same for all the companies, rules are same for all businesses, the big worry is how will a Rs 75-100 cr annual turnover company survive if they don’t stick to payments terms of around 30 days with trade? With nearly two third (70%) of working capital above 100+ days, how will a company and its related vendors sustain. In wood, plywood, panels and decorative laminate industry & trade, 50% of the business volume is coming from companies with annual revenue between Rs 50 to 100 crore, the SMEs. If businesses are changing from unorganised to formal ways, the only way left is opting for tight working, making quality product, strengthening your local and regional presence. If you are a trader, you must choose your brand carefully which is not just offering cheap! Look at how the company is offering other support to create and expand market. This is why in present scenario “failing in payment commitment is leading to a “Direct Retail” (own warehousing in HPL & plywood) work culture in the industry. Last but not the least, my work is to remind the traders that whatever you do, will cause a ripple effect in the industry. Choose your collective actions with care! Best Wishes

Calibration is requisite property for plywood produCt

The calibrated panel processing goes well with CNC machines and better surface finish hence without calibration, plywood cannot grow further. The survey also hints that the consumption of plywood share in OEMs, Kitchen Makers and Big Contractors (having business turnover of above Rs 5 crore annually) have increased by 25 to 30 % among all panel requirements.
T
he producers and importers of different panel products e.g. MDF, PB, WPC/PVC Boards, Cement Fibre Boards, etc have tried to present these as alternates of plywood. These products are being marketed as better substitutes of plywood with many advantages over plywood. These alternate panels have been successfully reaching among users due to being economic and additional features, hence expanding their production capacities. But, the fact is, Plywood market size still holds its firm grip and is maintaining its share, charm and attraction because of its dependability and ease of working, which is not yet matched by any product so far. Surprisingly in this growth period of other products, the plywood production capacity also doubled with many new factories, new machines in Punjab, Haryana, Kerala and other states. In terms of profitability for dealers, Plywood is a winner among all panels which makes it a consistently much growing product in India. Many people believe that, Plywood is a first choice for consumers also because available alternate panels do not meet few mechanical & physical properties that provide the strength and durability. Carpenters/ Contractors and designers prefer plywood because it is most credible product in terms of workmanship and mechanical features. But with changing uses and application, plywood too need to be upgraded. In present scenario and available technology, plywood shall stay for another longer time period if it becomes a calibrated panel. Ply Reporter and Big Sea Market Research recent surveys show the rising applications and demand among OEMs and Modular Kitchen Makers where they require only ‘calibrated plywood’. Presently the calibrated plywood is imported from Russia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and China. Although 25-30 Indian plywood producers claim to have genuine calibrated plywood but accept half a dozen brands, there is need of development further. With growing need, calibration will become essential feature for plywood making in another 2-3 years. The Ply Reporter strongly recommends to produce genuine quality and all calibrated plywood for emerging markets. The interaction with OEMs for the need of Calibrated Plywood and their expectation from ‘Wigwam Fabricate’ plywood is interesting report for trade people. The July 2019 issue of The Ply Reporter contains important news on ‘how GST strictness is bringing the plywood trade under organised working, Uttar Pradesh wood industry Licenses ongoing status, Greenply ties up in UP, Expanding capacity of Fibre Cement Panels etc. The interview of ‘Euro Pratik’s managing director, Mr. Pratik Singhvi opening up on present state of imported decorative highlighter panels in India. There is also an interaction with Mr. Ashok Agarwal, MD, Kanchan Ply and an important office bearer of AIPMA, talking on various issue of wood panel industry. The views of Mr. Manish Goel of Abhiyan Group also explain the motive and need to their products in market. India’s pioneer laminate brand GREENLAM LAMINATES’ initiatives are covered under feature ‘Greenlam Connect’ starting from this issue. Besides, many updates and reports featuring in wood panel decorative industry and trade are loaded in this issue of Ply Reporter that may help you to plan better in present times.

NEWS WATCH
fter being questioned by National Green Tribunal (NGT) on the new license issued for establishing wood based industries in Uttar Pradesh, the UP Forest department has constituted a High Power Committee in this issue. This Committee will present its detailed report to the NGT on July 15. Based on this report, the matter will be heard by the NGT on 6th August 2019.
28
Talking to The Ply Reporter, Mr MP Singh, Chief Forest Conservator, UP Forest Department said that the detail report is being prepared by the new committee, which is in process. This High Power Committee has been constituted under the leadership of Kalpana Awasthi, Principal Secretary Forest and Mr. Pawan Kumar Singh, Principal Chief Conservator of forest, forest department, UP Government. Pawan Kumar Singh is also the Head of court cell for UP Forest Department. This committee has to submit its report to the court on July 15. This report will be presented as an answer to the questions raised by the NGT. The committee is working on its report, Mr. Singh added. This is also noted that NGT issued notice to UP Forest Department during a hearing on a petition filed in connection with the process of licenses issued for wood based industries in UP. In this notice, the NGT has sought the forest department’s response to the amount of wood available in Uttar Pradesh. In the petition filed in NGT, the UP Forest Department has been accused of misrepresenting the quantity of wood available in the state. WIGWAM FABRICATE’s offerings are such, that they do not require extra finishing during applications. Wigwam uses veneer on plywood, which gives us the advantage to polish it directly. We are involved in melamine polished furniture production for which Wigwam’s plywood is perfect. It is a calibrated plywood with a veneer application on it, which reduces our cost of production for the required purposes. We are using their MR grade plywood and feel that the offerings are perfect for OEMs. We also see advantages in using WIGWAM FABRICATE in place of imported plywood due to a number of benefits like cost saving in inventory, consistent material supply and high-quality product offerings.

When we talk about OEM, its manufacturing set up is in such a way that a variation of even a fraction of a millimeter in panel thickness matters. If the variation is more than the excepted level, the drilling goes out and the product output is not as desired. For a quality OEM, perfection is a must, which can be obtained only with a quality calibrated plywood. WIGWAM FABRICATE’s quality is very good as there is no gap in between the cores, the thickness is proper and the tolerance is less than 0.30 mm, which is perfectly fine. I personally feel that their offerings are good and perfect for OEMs like us. As an option to imported plywood, it gives better results in terms of consistency of products and delivery period. This saves us a lot in costs of inventory management and import-export paperwork for which we require separate department. Actually, they are using automation in their production process to make their products perfect for OEMs.

Euro Pratik, one of the leading suppliers of Decorative Panels, is known for bringing the highest innovative range in Charcoal Panels in India. Besides consolidation in this segment, they have registered double digits growth in this category due to having their pan India market presence with retailers. Mumbai based Euro Pratik and their group companies have been also dealing in many other decorative panels such as PVC laminates, Albasters, Flooring, Planks etc. The Ply Reporter talked to Mr Pratik Singhvi, Managing Director, Euro Pratik regarding the present market scenario of decorative and highlighter panels, along with market trends and approach. Excerpts. www.plyreporter.com
The Ply RePoRTeR july 2019
How do you see the growth potential of Charcoal Panels in present Indian market?
Why Charcoal Panels are not being produced in India? DECOLITE- Charcoal panels making is highly technical and tedious that has been produced at best quality only in Korea. The quality level and precision has not been achieved by any other countries or even China so far. Multiple factors like the ingredient compositions, heat treatment, foils, raw material, paints, brushing, different effects, etc. are not so easy to meet hence the perfection in output is still managed to be achieved by only Korea. We are the ones who first asked for this material and have exchanged lot of inputs in developing this product, its designs with a combined team effort of India and Korea. With right technical support and good marketing efforts, we offer quality so, you can say that Euro Pratik is the one who invented Charcoal Panel and kept improving gradually. We were the first company to bring this product in 8x4 range and in a way created a market for this product pan-India. Euro Pratik is a leader in this particular category, so how do you manage to differentiate your products? The differentiation in market is established during last five years. Today only one or two companies are making it successfully that is itself a differentiation. Charcoal panels become more difficult if you increase the width of the panel. The finishing of the product is equally important. The material used in making of Charcoal Panel is Polystyrene whose manufacturing process is very complicated. We have currently more than 350 designs in Panels as well as 300 designs in mouldings.
From last year, Charcoal panel is performing good but sales numbers are not rising the way they use to be during last 3-4 years. We can say it is flat now after witnessing good growth. Cumulatively Our Charcoal panel sales grew by 20-30% each year since last few years. During last 12 month, I think, at least 15 players have made an exit, by selling the materials at through away price, therefore the market is currently in a consolidation phase. With 3040 designs, one cannot compete with us and currently there are only 2-3 sellers who are selling Charcoal in an organised way and would revive this product in future. What is you expectation for the next three years in this category? It should grow, as the market is maturing day by day. In Charcoal panels, we are trying to bring something which is new and unique. In design offerings, we have brought something really innovative as if you observe the embossing in designs which were outside embossing till date, but now we have brought inside embossing. It is first time we have introduced in India. We call it PUNCH LINE series. So, we see the future will be very good. Now it is a consolidation period. One of the very biggest factors is that the competition has drastically come down. Those who are doing business with just a limited range are exiting and those who have long term vision are going to sustain. The serious players with right market, fulfilling inventory, right channel partners and perfect strategy will grow in this segment. We feel only players who have a big range, who can innovate will stay & others will exit sooner or later. Also it should be noted that no other product with the quality & property of Charcoal is available at this price bracket. There is no end to innovation & charcoal has replaced Designer MDF, MOSAICS, PVC wall panels & several other products due to its affordability & design innovation. So we strongly feel, Charcoal is there to stay. How do you see PVC laminate growth with respect to imports and present market demands or application trends? We are the only importer in color core PVC laminate in the country today. The rest of the players are bringing only white and off-white range to avoid risks and dead stock buildup. We are also doing veneer PVC with high gloss. Due to high gloss, 90 degree bending property, product acceptability it is taking lot of share of regular laminates, especially in 1 mm segment, because it

The Ply RePoRTeR July 2019
There is a shortage of Poplar wood in the market. The industries have shifted majorly to Eucalyptus. Some small industries are using Semal and Aru timbers. The shortage of Poplar timber will prevail for the next 3-4 years at least. Due to very low prices of timber in the past 2 years, farmers restricted themselves from plantation of Poplar timber. They found viability in other crops. In Uttar Pradesh, lots of new licenses have been issued. Do you think all units will start on these allotted licenses in Uttar Pradesh in coming future? In accordance to the number of licenses allotted by the state government, it is very difficult to install so many units in Uttar Pradesh. In the current sluggish market scenario, very few new players are thinking of setting up a plywood industry, where as the existing manufacturers are installing new presses and increasing their production. Under the new licenses, new peeling machines and band saw machines will work. Do you think the licensing process can be cancelled? The licensing process has been challenged by an NGO at the NGT (National Green Tribunal). So it is under the preview of only the NGT to take a decision in this matter. No one else can comment on it. What is the status of licenses of MDF and Particle Board? The U.P Government is backing the people who have acquired licenses for MDF and Particle Board. Currently
The new players are coming up with new technology, method and practices. We should also adapt new techniques for sustainability. As soon as the demand will come to its course, the increase in prices will be accepted by the market.
Melia Dubia is a fast growing species and has a bright future and a replacement for Poplar in the next 4-5 years. The people of Yamunanagar should encourage the farmers in Haryana to plant more and more trees and get in collaboration with the government to educate the farmers the benefits of new species of timber ‘Melia Dubia’. Greenply and Centuryply are amongst the big names which are planning to install MDF or PB lines. Greenply has acquired land in Sandila whereas Centuryply has acquired near Sitapur. Dealing with mango wood is cheaper and its wood is being accepted these days, what do you say? It is not so! The mango wood is not cheap. The acceptance of Mango wood is not there with the end consumers. Pine timber has more acceptances. But I wish to point out that Mango timber is a hard wood and has better properties than that of Pine to be used in Doors, Stiles and Rails. Moreover Pine is not even acceptable as per BIS standards to be used in Door Frames, Stiles and Lock Rail as it being soft wood. The mango wood due to its strength and grain texture is witnessing increased usage in Furniture Industry. What about the price of Safeda and how is its plantation and other crops and how is the status of mango wood in UP? Due to sudden shift from Poplar to Eucalyptus, there is pressure on eucalyptus prices also but not as much that on Poplar. There is a gradual increase in the prices of Eucalyptus timber and it will continue to be so. The availability of Eucalyptus will sustain the demand of the market. The mango wood is under restricted species of timber which is made available only after requisite permissions from the department.
