Dealers & Distributors neeD to reinvent with changes in the market

The established dealers/ stockiest and distributors often have a rigid mindset on margins, way of working and capital needs. E
very product category be it Plywood, Laminate, wood veneer, PVC boards, Particle Board, MDF is crowded, competitive and confusing in today’s scenario. Active manufacturers are strengthening their grip on market with increased spent on sales personals, marketing & promotions, and adding new products and infrastructure to support the spend. On the other side large percentage of distributors/dealers are confused on their part of acts. There is over supply of materials from each product category yet majority of distributors-dealers are still sitting dull instead of working on changes because they expect their suppliers/principal companies to do all the effort for sales growth or wait for market to get better. During last 6-7 years, there has been 5 fold jump in number of retail shops and 2 fold in number of distributors at all key centers across the country. With rise in production capacity, outlets have grown too but the consumption on the ground has not grown with the same speed resulting in high competition and price war. Competition gives edge to alert and hardworking distributors and retailers specially to commitment driven players. That’s why new comers (in distribution) who are hungry and pro-active to establish themselves are growing 3 times faster than the old dealers. The established dealers/stockiest and distributors often have a rigid mindset on margins, way of working and capital needs. Very few realise that present market does not offer much scope for conventional thought process on margins. Distributors have to re-invent if they are eager to grow in present market scenario that requires capital, approach to offer service with a good company image, so that a distribution firm can build sales effectively.
Expecting/asking companies to bring secondary or providing sales people, launching schemes, are ok but one shall not wait to weaken own margins and market grip. Distributors need to put greater effort by hiring own sales people and infuse more capital if they wish to earn a net of 8-9% on a bigger volume. Rising competition shall restrict conventional distributors at 3 % net profit even on smaller sales volumes which is not sufficient. Time is suitable for active, hardworking and market savvy distributors for the reason that there are so many companies & good brands looking for right channel partners. In the same way a conventional retailer has to improve by remodeling their outlet with more space. 300 sq feet shops do not offer much scope in modern retailing because of variety of product range that a customer need. If a retailer can afford to expand to 700+ sq feet area, he can re-define his presence and relevance among contractors and consumers. “A retailer is the Guru of products and interior design, because in this purview lies the capacity to change buyers’ perspective during purchase decisions. However, to remain a Guru, you need to change the approach while retailing.” Present times are tough, competitive and full of stress for those who are not active. It is advisable for distributors & retailers to enhance knowledge base; reach out to customers instead of waiting for them to come. It is also time for increased efforts instead of waiting for companies’ support and schemes. The margins are too tight & limited for expecting anyone to do the needful. Embrace the change and reinvent your working to stay alive in fast changing Indian market.
Best Wishes

The ill-effecT of face Veneer on plywood is significanT

Rajiv Parashar, Editor

The use of any or cheapest face veneer is slowly erasing the quality difference perception. This will lead to recon face plywood or decorative melamine base paper. Which if happens, the Plywood as a product or brand, will further loose its brand value and become more closer to a commodity. Hence, its an alert for Plywood and Face Veneer producers both, to use and produce standard thickness of face to avoid ill-affect of volatile face veneer market as well as genuine quality plywood.
F
ace Veneer is an important part of plywood manufacturing. Putting face on ply is not just color but also directly related to mechanical and physical properties hence there was recommended thickness need to be in 0.5 mm to 0.8 mm for making standard quality plywood. Using face of genuine thickness certainly helps to hide the impression of resin on surface of plywood that creates smooth surfaces and better looks. Secondly, it pastes along with cross section of Core Veneer, hence it improves the mechanical properties of plywood which is related to the durability of finished products. Apart from mechanical requirements, BIS also says, the face thickness should be 0.5 mm plus, if you are making IS standard products. But, with the evolution of plywood industry in India, the industry has started compromising in thicknesses of face veneers because the prices of face veneer are going high everyday. Hence, majorly industry has started using face for just putting a layer and thicknesses have lowered to 0.25 mm or below. Face veneer producers keep offering different grades of face for bridging price gap. Besides, all odds, industry kept relying on Gurjan or red kind of face veneer to feed the psychological need of customers till 2017, but when the red colored Okume face veneer entered into market at half priced of Gurjan, a major plywood manufacturing segment shifted to Okume. Post okume rise market is flooded with a dozen varieties, species and grades of face veneer. Now the face veneer quality and supplies are so erratic that industries/consumers are ready to accept any kind of face for plywood. One one side face is irrelevant in todays times but on other side face is what build image of a brand or factory. This June 2019 issue is very much important for those industry and trade people, who missed Interzum and Ligna International fair held in Germany in May. The Ply Reporter has brought to you some significant facts and snippets about these shows. Research based news on MDF, Transport and Industrial grade plywood, Face Veneer, situation after NGT Query on new wood based industries licenses in UP, financial achievement and announcements of organized plywood and decorative panels companies etc are worth read. Knowledge based reports on Fire Incidents and GST are also useful for every person related to the industry. Successful completion of India Interior Retailing (IIR) at Ahmedabad and Bangalore along with many happenings in industry and trade are also reported in detail which our readers must enquire about. MDF pressure easeD, Better capacity utilization aheaD
T
NEWS WATCH
he month of April noted improved lifting of MDF from factories. The MDF manufacturing companies are little relieved thanks to the upward momentum after a long patch of almost 3 quarter that started during last Financial Year. During April and May, the market info coming from stockiest and plants hints at increase in capacity utilization. The capacity uses of MDF lines fell below 30-40 % has moved up crossing 5560 % of the installed capacity.
28
The distributors have also expressed positive outlook as movement has picked up. The breather is being felt after a gap 7 to 8 months which was pretty suffocating due to a sudden bulge in supply after new capacity additions in the country. The three new production lines of Action Tesa in Uttrakhand, Green Panelmax in Andhra Pradesh and Century ply in Punjab added a cumulative total of 2500 cbm that is still a high dose for growing MDF market in India. The ‘attacking posture on price match with imports’ taken by Green Panel max MDF has helped the company to improve on its market lifting. The plant of ‘Green Panel max MDF, is considered to be quality driven product in south India now and has scored over imported material in last six months. The Century Ply’s Hoshiarpur MDF plant has improved its market presence by reaching out to every trusted and potential dealer of Century Ply. Till writing the reports, Century MDF panel continue to improve on market confidence on quality, sustained supply and better pricing. Action Tesa MDF plant is performing better among all with its strong hold in various product categories and brand image created over the years in particular product
segment as a specialist company. Action Tesa plant hold a total capacity of around 1500 cbm in MDF alone that is reported to be utilizing its 80 to 90 percent capacity during April. The increasing prices of plywood has also boosted the prospects for MDF demand specially in lower thicknesses panels. The reports coming from Rushil Décor VIR MDF from Andhra Pradesh and Pioneer Panels too are better compared to earlier reports. The Ply Reporter sense, that ‘from here on, MDF market will see a gradual rise in demand and capacity utilization for next 3 to 4 months till Eucalyptus prices start climbing. Once raw material prices move up, the MDF will again see a price increase that is expected by August-September onwards. Over all, MDF segment has begun to make the positive noise after a long gap of two years thanks to demand and rising prices of cheap plywood.

Interzum, cologne is an important destination for Surface décor trends. While we look at the designs, which seem to be ‘must-haves’ for the Indian market, we also look at the other side – how Indian players are choosing their new designs, inspirations & collection from the fair. In decorative laminates, design creators have been trying to get closer & closer to natural materials and hence they draw inspiration from surrounding environment, moods and natural materials. The level of closeness, the touch of technology and innovation determine how successful it will be.

Reproducing materials in laminated surfaces has been a trend ever since however, this time there were good attempts to display design inspired from urbanism, abstracts and subtle feel of surroundings materials, including metals. Stone, woods and coming back of metal is what we saw at Interzum 2019. There were displays of larger wood or stone block patterns. The modern scanning technology has enabled the designers to imitate and recreate any stone block, wood grain with ditto color match or even with improvisations inspired from surrounding taste and fashion. As Indians, we were more known to spend in hiding the concrete surfaces with paints. This is no more true for the urban well travelled population. Concrete not only provides a cool look in construction, but have found place in furniture and interior design extensively. Architects today are in love with the grey concrete surface. This was quite obvious and visible in the collections of design paper companies. The Grey were displayed for areas like living room, bedroom and even bathroom furniture. Imitating wood blocks, veneers, aged wood, smoky wood, chiseled or sawn etc have been there from quite www.plyreporter.com

some time but this time Interzum stalls had inspirations from dyed and neo-urban colors that were beautifully amalgamated with wood grains. The Italian veneer manufacturer Alpi’s Gamperana Triplex veneer collection was launched in collaboration with designer Martino Gamper. The veneer sheets grouped in three, was visibly a very unique composition. Definitely one of the trends that dominated interzum 2019 was ‘increasing urbanisation’. With growing numbers moving to cities, living space is in increasingly short supply, hence for optimal utilisation of the available floor space and components to provide more space per square metre. “Urban” is an on-trend texture that is ideal for stylish, modern kitchens and is one of the new products being presented at interzum at Saapi. With concept “I’m Pulse”, Impress decor presented new designs with light colors suiting for wall design, furniture or floor covering. lnterprint displayed the possibilities of digital printing in a “future-oriented” way that was covering all possible applications. The presentation of textures with “Xelio” finish foil were stunning and very close to the materials it intended to replicate with. Materiality and authenticity at Interprint design display was appreciated by the laminate producing companies, visiting Interzum 2019. www.plyreporter.com

The exhibitors reported that they did excellent business and established many new contacts from around the world. In its anniversary year, interzum mastered the balancing act of being an industry meeting place for trade visitors on the one hand and a hotspot for the creative professions on the other. A large number of inspiring presentations by companies contributed to this. This year interzum demonstrated impressively that it is not only a trade fair particularly for the supplier industry, but also a 360-degree event that presented visions of how we will
live in the future. By addressing this issue, it takes up a place alongside imm cologne/ LivingKitchen and ORGATEC. In addition to familiarizing themselves with the product ranges of suppliers to the furniture industry, manufacturers, architects and designers were able to discover a host of innovative materials and production processes. With a diverse range of special event areas, talk and discussion areas, piazzas and workshops on disruptive materials, surface design, digital printing, digital products and materials, smart systems, mobile living spaces and new technologies, interzum 2019 linked a broad spectrum of future issues and product innovations for tomorrow’s homes. The stand out themes this year that will set the direction of future developments were the continuing rise of individualisation, energy efficiency and sustainability, light (LED), digitalisation (including voice control), micro living and “slide and hide”.
