Increased supply to reduce FInIsh goods prIces; retaIl to grow In 2018-19

A lot is happening on capacity additions in Plywood, Doors, Laminates, PVC boards, Particle Boards, MDF, Edge band, Adhesives, Decorative surfaces and Floorings segment hence there will be growth in market size with more material supply. The estimated growth in each category will be around 16 to 18 percent YOY for next 3-4 years due to the capacities exploding everywhere. The consumption has to grow because of too much of capacity leads to market growth along with price rationalization.
D
espite of all gloomy doomy scenario, the furniture manufacturers are gaining confidence. A cumulative growth in furniture industries has not been visible during last one and half years but capacity additions, new plants and modernization is regularly being done by the furniture makers. The Indian Wood Panel Décor and furniture industry is adopting the change though moving ahead after acknowledging the fact that business has to be in books and so the earnings despite of all the ‘slow market’ chatter. The benefit to the exercise is resulting in form of realization among entrepreneurs and businessmen that ‘Things have to be worked out in organized manner’. Despite of struggles on the ground and weak lifting in retail markets, the expansion in manufacturing plants are happening at astonishing speed in every product category related to wood panel furniture industry. At ‘Ply Reporter and Furniture Design & Technology research wing’, the team is grappling to combine and verify the industry capacity numbers because, there is a news of capacity expansion or a new plant every alternate day. India in FY 2017-18 is poised to offer bigger opportunities and organized working after E-way bill, though a speedy pick-up in demand is expected to grow slow and steady. After GST that was applicable in July 2017, un-organized industries of plywood, Hardware and Furniture made sincere efforts to reduce the slab and thankfully the slab was changed from 28 to 18 %. Now every interior product has become cheaper with 18% net GST paid on them. With rise in industry capacity, lesser tax cost, the net cost of furniture is going to be more economical in FY 2018-19 thus helping active and organized retailer to grow quicker. With data pointing to increasing sales in budget housing, The Ply Reporter is bullish on domestic demand coming in to each product category related to furniture making thus helping wood and panel industry at large. FY 2018-19 will belong to sincere effort makers who save on raw materials, improve efficiency, establishing distribution and setting up teams and provide the best at cheapest possible. Best Wishes

The objective of entire wood panel and related furniture materials producers are common, that they want to reduce their dependency on men power, and wish to adopt automatic manufacturing establishment for volume production. Furniture sector is increasingly opting for CNC controlled machines, panel saw, edge band, boring machines for quality and volume. Concluding manufacturing scenario, Indian wood-panel and furniture manufacturing sectors are on transformation spree to be equipped by adopting atomization and it is visible in every product category and every part or states of India.
I
ndian Wood Panel & Furniture manufacturing are getting mature gradually and producers are moving towards high production with modern machines for quality work to support big volumes. There is pressure on margins because supply is more and market is becoming competitive. The logic behind big volumes is to reduce overhead cost and generate ability to sustain. In present scenario, those firms having turnover between Rs 80 -Rs 150 crore are moving towards Automation in plants to keep them safe and be different from the crowd. Plywood companies are bringing high capacity Boilers, Jumbo Driers, auto Core Composers, Auto Loading-unloading system, 20-daylight presses, double side sanding, Calibrator, High Speed Peeling with smooth work flow layout. HPL industries too are putting high speed impregnation lines, 16-daylight presses etc. PB and MDF producers are enquiring for medium capacity (ranging 300 to 400 cubic meters) and Conti-roll production lines with new designed Chippers, Refiner and Flakers at the same time MDF players are putting high capacity European lines. PVC Edge band, PVC Boards, Cement Fibre Boards, Doors, Decorative Veneers too witnessing high volume lines to cater demand. Hence, the situation is a big opportunity for machinery producers and suppliers, of catering the actual need by offering genuine solutions to manufacturers. Now, come to the March 2018 issue, which is very much important for producers and retailers, who are calculating last year achievements and planning to set new target for next financial year because the issue has a feature report as ‘TAKE AWAYs for WOOD & Panel Trade from FY 2017-18’, a lesson for all. One 2 one interaction with Mr. Ajay Agarwal, MD of Balaji Action Buildwell (Action Tesa) on MDF demand scenario, company’s expansion plan and target of next two years, a worth reading for wood panel industry and trade. Besides, lots of research based news reports on Plywood, MDF, Décor Paper, PVC Mica, etc have been published. Apart from that many reports are related to new development, product launch, happening in trade. The Ply Reporter Team would like to ‘THANK YOU’ all our advertisers, readers, well- wishers for their support in FY 2017-18 and we wish to continue the same in the new Financial year. Wishing you all a prosperous Financial year Ahead ! .

THE Ply REPoRTER march 2018
Plywood manufacturing caPacity to rise by 25%
I
NEWS WATCH
ndia has always been a predominantly plywood consuming country as against the world-wide trends. The ratio of Plywood v/s Other panels (MDF, PB) demand in India is 80:20 where as it is almost opposite like 20:80 in developed and mature markets world over. Value wise the Plywood market is worth Rs 25000 crore v/s MDF/PB markets of Rs 6000 crore as estimated vague by Industry analyst and associations. Continuing to the past trends plywood industry capacities are growing at a very high speed thanks to sustained demand in the plywood sector.
28
In coming years, the plywood manufacturing capacity is set to rise by 25-30 percent where as market demand is growing at 9-10 percent YOY growth. Punjab, Haryana, UP and Rajasthan are set to have approximately150 new units within 2018. This rise in number of Plywood plants will create pressure on sales prices and volume growth of each unit. The market in 2018 is not expected to bounce back because there is hardly any sign of growth or demand pick up in reality sector. Compared to anticipated demand the rise in supply will provide cheaper plywood to customers and will lead to margin pressure on plywood factories. The pressure on sales is set to drive the Indian plywood market in favors of buyers hence creating an additional challenge to organized industries despite of GST implementation. The small and mid-segment factories will have to spend more to sustain the growing competition during 2018 and 2019 because of huge flow of plywood, boards and doors in markets. Those who are entering in plywood manufacturing with a notion of decent profit-making sector will confront the reality by 2018 end.
The plywood industry is set to witness big change in FY 2018-19 when Cheque payments will be preferred over cash. The coming FY will be a defining year for brands who are expanding capacities and introducing economy brands in plywood category to expand their market penetration in each consumer segment. Despite of GST that was implemented from July 1st 2017, the unorganized or informal sector is continuing its old practices of working in unreported manner. This has been causing huge blow to the branded segment players due to the price gap between tax compliant company and non-tax paying company. The Indian market is slowly tilting in favor of such companies who have sales teams, trust and wider network. The mid segment players who are maintaining a fine balance in controlling cost, quality of products and decent brand spending are expected to fare better in channel network in coming time. In long run, the success will come to organized players who have been waiting for GST, E way bill and a level playing field where taxes for a big firm and a smaller firm has huge difference.

Price War hits margins of mDf ProDucers
W NEWS WATCH
ith rise in awareness and application of Medium density fiber-board, India is consuming more MDF than ever. Thanks to designers using MDF in different applications, this category is growing at 22 percent annual growth despite of many odds. With present installed capacity of 2400 cbm per day, Indian MDF market is around Rs 1800 crore as of now. The growth in value terms in MDF segment has not been very promising though volumes have grown by 22 percent. The key players in Indian markets are Action Tesa, Green Panelmax, VIR MDF, Century Ply, ASIS MDF and Pioneer.

Apart from Indian producers, major play is pulled by importers who are getting materials from Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia etc. Australia, New Zealand etc also contribute to Indian market as they are Pie based material specifically used by many furniture makers. With more of CNC routing application on MDF and increasing taste for ‘unique/creatively designed furniture’ MDF panels are looking at a decent growth run. With commencement of production of two new plants in India the MDF capacity is set to reach 4500 cbm per day by the end of 2018-19 FY. Action Tesa and Shirdi Industries expansion in MDF plants in Uttarakhand and Green Panelmax and Rushil Decor new plant in South India shall be pushing the market expansion in coming years of 2019 and 2020. Growth is expected in MDF due to rise in application of material in surfacing, partition and furniture making. The development work from government departments and PSUs and acceptance of MDF is also going to help the demand boost in the segment. There are high chances that a price war will begin in second half of 2018.

The largest company for manufacturing MDF and Particle Board in the country is Action Tesa. With present capacity of almost 1000 cbm of PB & MDF, the company has been one of the fastest growing brands in India. With huge spending on awareness building for MDF, PB and Flooring, Action Tesa has been pivotal in bringing these new product acceptances in retail consumers and OEMs. Speaking to The Ply Reporter, Balaji Action Buildwell (Action Tesa) MD, Mr Ajay Agrawal shared his views on present scenario of panel industry in India.

& Century will be 2.5 times of current capacity. Although 100% utilisation from the newly added capacities will take at least 2-3 years considering the current demand and supply gap, assuming market demand to grow by 25-30%. So, definitely there will be a stiff competition for the next 3 years due to excess supply starting from now. What is the present MDF market scenario in India? The current year till date is good, but the market scenario looks tough with growing MDF production capacity. The production from Century’s new plant has started just a quarter back and it is feared that it may impact a bit in the coming years. Cheap import of MDF is also creating added pressure in the markets. Present MDF demand seems highly competitive with new plants coming in. What is your view on pricing of MDF? Yes, of course with new upcoming MDF production units, we anticipate highly competitive market ahead as everyone will be striving hard to run on 100% capacity utilization. With upcoming cumulative capacity of major players viz Action TESA, Green
Also, one cannot rule out the unhealthy competition posed by low quality, low priced MDF from imported & other local manufacturers’ product which dents Indian manufacturers. The pricing of MDF will be under pressure during next 3-4 years for sure. Despite of demand, we have not heard any plant coming in for Thin MDF, why it so? Well, all the three big players Action, Greenply and Century can provide MDF in 2.0 mm onwards thicknesses from upcoming new plants. How do you see the sustainable procurement of timber for complete capacity utilization? If farmers don’t plant more trees in line with the anticipated increasing demand then yes, it will be a matter of great concern. Also due to increasing demand of timber it may result in price hike by the farmers which in turn will increase the production cost. How do you see market growth of MDF by 2018, 19 and 20? I think it will grow nearly by 20 percent YoY. www.plyreporter.com

says Mr. Suresh Shah, MD, Gautam Plywood Industries (P) Ltd, Maker Jyoti Ply
164
Mr. Suresh Shah, having more than 40 years of experience in Plywood industry and trade, is founder and MD of Gautam Plywood Industries (p) Ltd, which makes Jyoti Plywood brand. The Ply Reporter talked to him on his journey so far and the industry witnessing changes with the passes of time. He eloquently talked on various topics without hesitation. Tell me about your experience in this industry, and how is the journey so far? I started my career in this industry in the year 1977 as an employee in a plywood manufacturing company Sudarshan Plywood and worked there till July 1990. I was in sales at Sudarshan Plywood. Later I played a major role for launching one of the leading Laminates brands. I ventured for my own manufacturing establishment in 1998 and started brand ‘Jyoti Ply’ under Gautam Plywood Industries in Sampla, Haryana. Currently we are working with two presses of 10 and 12 daylights and producing nearly 35 trucks if work for 12 hours a day. We mostly produce PF grade plywood including decorative ply and doors as per order. If we talk about the considerable change happened in this industry till date. How it changed every decade right from the 70th till now? From 1970 to 1990, that was a very good period for plywood, because the majority of the plywood was manufactured at North-Eastern region and nearly 30 percent were manufactured at Southern region of the country. There were no factories in existence in the North and the quality of manufactured plywood was excellent that time. In the beginning the face veneer thickness of www.plyreporter.com
1.2 mm was used, which has now reduced to 0.25 mm. The 1.2 mm face veneer ply was with so good quality material as the core gap was not visible and that was so strong that today’s even waterproof ply is not able to come at par. In the beginning only commercial ply was manufactured. Waterproof ply started to manufacture first of all in 1984 at Sudarshan Ply itself with the brand name Kitply (the concept came from the word kitchen) and later after six months Sarda Plywood started manufacturing similar product. The technology was not so advanced but hardwood cores from Holange were used. The plywood quality was good, core thickness was complete, materials were of good quality, quality of wood was good. Now that quality of wood is not available in the market. If we talk about 1991 to 2000 period, how was it? Till 1996 the situation of raw material availability was somehow good but after the Supreme Court (SC) guidelines, factories located in N-E region get closed. In North India, the local factories were emerging right from beginning of the 90s. And after 1996, the factories establishments mushroomed at Northern India such as at Yamunanagar, Delhi NCR, UP and others. Kerala developed later.
The Ply RePoRTeR March 2018
The margin was good in the beginning because the timber price was less. As the number of factories increased the margin as well as quality both came down. Till 2000 there was good margin and later the factories mushroomed in the North and due to which margin shrunk drastically. After 2010 the qualities as well as margin both are on stake. Now companies are not focusing on quality they just want to capture market and there is cut-throat competition. There is a sentiment in the market that whatever is the quality but price must be less. Now people do not ask for quality but they definitely ask for the lower rates. When did you observe the best and the worst phase during this 40 years of your journey in the industry? The best phase was up to the year 2000, slowly it is witnessing the downfall in the industry and I can say the worst phase is post 2010. Today after DeMo and GST implementation demand is very low and supply is high, consumer awareness is very less, quality of the products are not good, real estate is slow which are affecting the demand of plywood and panels. What are the good things happening in the industry at present? A number of individuals and small projects in budget housing are doing well and in coming day we are hopeful for better plywood demands. It will increase considerably which is a reviving factor for the industry. But, there should be quality product game plan for every player. The implementation of E-way bill is another good thing which must be implemented effectively at the earliest for the benefit of the industry. New generations’ increasing interest in the industry is good but they must be guided positively and follow the organised working model. GST mechanism may facilitate them to adopt the system. What are the five best qualities of Jyoti Ply? Jyoti Ply does not have just five qualities, it is many. First of all I have 45 years of experience in the industry. Secondly, we do not compromise with quality. The quality means –100% waterproof what we always do, good quality at the most reasonable price, the guarantee of best product offerings on the same price, excellent and very quick after sales service, etc. Tell me about present trade practices in plywood?
bests material and manufactured products. What is happening in the industry today is that a customer is shown a good quality ply at higher price and delivery is done with the inferior quality, which is available at half of the price. At the time of purchase decision the customers trust most on influencers. The solution to this bad practice is nothing but consumer awareness. We tried many times and discussed with industry players but no concrete has been done. Therefore the trades are unwilling to get good quality product as their margin comes down after commission to mediators. Its effect is witnessing everywhere that every manufacturer has to make lower quality products. Look at the top brands activities these days. Every now and then they are coming up with new brands and reducing their price as well to capture their markets. In this way whether MDF market will gain the space of plywood? It is happening today! Day by day it is increasing and to feed the market new units of MDF are coming up rapidly. Their productions are being consumed. They must have studies thoroughly and opting for machine installation and running their units confidently. The reason is that people are losing their confidence with plywood. Consumers are doubtful about the quality of delivery of the plywood they wish to purchase. How do you see the new licensing initiatives of UP and Haryana Governments? Haryana Government has given several new licences and UP is shortly going to open for it according to the announcements. In my opinion there is no need of these licences in this industry as the current productions are being already over done and are not able to be consumed. This new licensing initiatives will further down the quality of the products due to stiff competition. How do you see the future of plywood facilities operating in Delhi-NCR regions? It is sure that they have to face trouble in coming days. If you observe, the sealing drives have broken the back bone of this regions’ trade and industrial activities. Due to increasing pollution in Delhi many plywood factories and its chemical processing units had been shut for nearly 15 days. There is only option for them is to shift their units at safer place and maintain their peace of mind and move ahead confidently.
