Indian dealers have to re-learn the art of selling costlier plywood over Particle and MDF boards, if they are willing to take their earnings and counter’s goodwill as priority. It is very clearly established fact that plywood selling hold the most share of turnover and profit, a dealer/retailer makes from its retail counter. Hence when times are changing, there is utmost need to tell and re-tell the benefits of plywood role vs another cheap substitute.

P

oplar plywood is a history with 2018 and it’s no more available. Its time to realize that, availability of Poplar logs have reached to their scarcity cycle and will possibly return only after 2022. Year 2019 onwards, its ‘only alternate & all red plywood’ phase. The combination of alternate woods ‘poplar and eucalyptus’ are the proven and tested combination for plywood making, thus dealers have to change and recalculate their factsheets to profitable business with alternate and all-red plywood. Manufacturers and retailers, both have earned well, riding on the POPLAR economy, but it’s time to embrace the material available which is far better in quality and make sense due to availability. The all red plywood is also a sensible choice for Gujrat and Maharashtra states, where Full poplar plywood has been favored material for masses. Since poplar ply was cheap and readily available on easy terms, it was fast selling but now retailers have to reach out to distributors for bridging the gaps. Sooner or later, manufacturers won’t be dispatching plywood lorry’s directly to retailers without payments and hence distributors role is going to be relevant again. The dealers of state of Maharashtra, Gujrat and Karnataka have to understand that ‘if they are still looking for cheap plywood made of poplar, they will have to buy plywood made of untreated Ardu, Semul, Rubber etc where quality risk is very high to damage the image of a retail counter. Although, if a producer treats these timber before making plywood, it may improve, but the cost will not be much viable. Instead ‘the Alternate plywood’ will make more sense. It is time for dealers to work hard and convince customers on the basis of Durability, strength and genuine warranty factor on full Red material. Crying and blaming for the rates and poplar ply availability is not going to help and believe me, plywood-laminate retailing is still good business if you are a dedicated dealer. The all-red plywood remains favored choice in Andhra, Telangana, Tamilnadu, Orissa, West Bengal, Bihar, parts of Karnataka, Maharashtra and even MP because this material is explained and convinced to customers on the basis of its durability, density and performance. Most of the retailers would agree that ‘All Red Plywood’ has better attraction if a dealer identify right customer and work on its selling, mainly because it is perceived with genuine naturally termite-borer resistance properties Marine grade plywood. The established counters who sell branded plywood know it well and they are having better supplier and margins. It is an opportunity for dealers to learn selling good quality plywood instead of waiting for cheap all poplar.

Good resins are needed for future

Decorative panel producers in laminates and veneers spend lots of money in innovation, design, offering and presentation but why not on safety of future generations. It is high time for the industry to seek E0 and E1 resin uses in panel products. There are number of research done by IPIRTI and FRI for resin developments and the time has come to adopt those researches for future. The Industry should also work towards strong measures in panel manufacturing quality norms in line with people’s health in future.

R

esin is one of the most essential raw materials for making wood panel products and decorative laminates. Resin quality qualifies the mechanical and chemical properties of panel products. The nomenclature of different grades of Plywood’s, Doors, MDF, Particle Boards depends on the varieties of resin used for making these products such as MR grade, BWR Grade, Exterior Grade, Fire rated grade, Insulation grade, Acoustic grade etc. Time to time the world wood panel industry do innovation in resin technologyto develop environment friendly, health and hygiene supporting resins as they are used in interior of the houses and offices. Apart from these there are many research related to technical advancement, cost saving, etc has done for resin development in world wood panel sector. Indian furniture sector has been growing and there is huge consumption of wood panel products locally. With improving awareness and education among the people, the requirement of health, hygiene and environment conscious products are needed more than ever. The educated consumers are asking about Emission Free decorative panels to safeguard them from skin diseases, cancer or other health affecting issues. Like other developed countries, India also needs to adopt formaldehyde emission free raw materials for panel and furniture making. The 40,000 crore worth Indian wood panel industry is making lot of investments in infrastructure and machineries for making volumes. But very few companies have infused money in resin developments and emission free resin production. Now come to this May issue, which has featured a special report on ‘ 0.92 mm decorative laminates : a Short Term Profit business or Long Term way’. Reports on tightening of timber supply and strict buying terms, labour shortage, etc are worth read. The interaction with Mr. Avtar Singh Bhullar, National Sales Manager of Century Ply MDF/PB Division is another worth reading interview for wood panel industry and trade. The interview with the Owners of Multiflex Furniture, known for making high quality furniture, is a learning lesson for panel manufacturers and dealers who are curious for furniture manufacturing. The successful launch of India Interior Retailing (IIR), an initiative of Ply Reporter and Surface Reporter magazine, is featured along with other happenings in the industry and trade. May is hectic month because 2nd and 3rd edition of IIR in Ahmedabad and Bangalore on 4th and 18 May respectively, World biggest furniture and wood working machinery show Interzum and Ligna in Germany. Keep reading and wish for stable government!

Labour shortage at Peak, Factories Production droPs beLow 50%

T

he absence of workers in Plywood, Panel and Door industries is affecting the ply board production nationwide. According to reports from different regions, the net production in Plywood Industry alone has gone below 50 percent due to shortage of factory workforce and helpers. The Industries located in Yamuna Nagar and Punjab has been observing mass departure on its railway stations since last one months. The reports from Gandhidham and Kerala indicate the similar picture. The workers from Orissa and West Bengal have gone to their native places time before due to damage threats and fear from Cyclone Fani. The combined impact of crops, election and Cyclone Fani has led to bigger exodus this time compared to previous years. Their expected return could be also delayed if the cyclone will be strong enough to inflict asset damages. It is known that plywood and panel industry employ large number of workforce form two states Bengal and Odissa.

As per ground reports, plywood manufacturing units in Mangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai and Vishakhapatnam are more affected due to lower concentration of factories. A number of units from these areas are unable to rotate dispatches and orders due to men power shortage. The labour contactors are said to be resuming of workers partial returns from June onwards. The national elections have become a bigger pull for workers this year because it is like a celebration time for them apart from casting their votes says Manak Das, a labor contractor from Orissa. On the other side, to minimize the labour counts, Plywood industries are adopting automation and modern machines with better layout to overcome the crisis since past 5-6 years yet plywood sector still need a huge manpower. It is expected that the workers will return to factories and the production will begin to smoothen only after June 3rd week. The present scenario has disturbed the dispatch routine in plywood and laminate factories.

The Ply RePoRTeR may 2019

How do you see, the journey of Century ProwudMDF in wood panel market so far? The growth has been substantial, from our production point of view, we are able to sell every piece we produce. We did not introduce all products since beginning of MDF plant, instead we introduced these gradually. We first launched DWR (Densified Water Resistant) & DIR (Densified Interior Range) of products. In the 2nd stage we introduced pre-lam range and now we have unveiled the path-breaking product of the panel industry - PREMIUM PLUS boards. The beauty is that all our product ranges are Quality products and conforms to BIS standards. Even the Premium Plus range has unparalleled 5 years warranty on it. Do you agree that last Financial year was challenging as there was over supply in the market? Yes, last year was challenging. Almost every player added capacity in MDF. The markets were not in a position to consume such huge production capacity suddenly. Due to this, there were lot of volatility in prices and that affected profitability. Fortunately, Century Prowud was able to change the market dynamics and created its own space due to its Quality products. We did not compete just on basis of prices in the market but with quality products and market-friendly policies. Today, Century Prowud products has reached pan India market. We have created over 500 stockiest network and cater to every nook & corner of the country. Do you see an improvement in pricing levels in MDF in coming time in MDF? We are working hard for improvements on all fronts. We

have launched value added products like Higher-density PREMIUM PLUS boards through which we are targeting quality plywood users. The middle class consumers is a large consumer segment in India and it always aspires to have a quality product at affordable prices. Today with changing consumer preferences the Indian middle-class wants a product that matches their home-ambience and is affordable. Buying the best quality ply boards are beyond their capacity due to higher prices. Due to costeffectiveness, Premium Plus caters to this segment and is fast replacing use of ply boards. With growing demand the prices of quality MDF will definitely go upwards. How was the last year turnover in MDF? Also tell us your aim for this FY? We have sold around 1.34 lakh square meter of MDF & Premium Plus during 2018-19 financial year. Century has been able to reach a combined turnover of over 400 crore, that includes Particle board and MDF. In the current financial year, we are confident of reaching Rs. 500 crore. We are confident of good demand in MDFand hence have plans for a further capacity addition of 400 cubic meters per day at Hoshiarpur plant. What is there in Premium Plus boards that makes you so confident? Higher Density PREMIUM PLUS comes with 5 years warranty. Century is the first company in India to give warranty on MDF products. Today middle class buyer wants Value-for-Money preposition. With HigherDensity Premium Plus range we are offering a Quality product at an affordable prices. It is said that the road to success comes from the hard works, determination and dedication. The phrase is right on three brothers Mr. Ashok Quodros, Mr. Anand Quodros and Robin Quodros, who founded the Quadros Group of companies and commenced panel processing activities in 1995. In the beginning of company, many obstacles started taking their exams but they never gave up and continued their hard works with total dedication and honesty. The result of the their struggle turns to a big success within a small journey of five year and Quadros brothers set up ‘Multiflex’, a fully automated, CNC factory in 2000 and then never looked back. Today, three Quadros brothers have established an ideal example of entrepreneurship in furniture industry of the country. At present, their company is providing a modern, high quality and affordable product to its customers, through a modern and state-of-the-art panel processing factory. www.plyreporter.com

How do you manage the operations at factory now?

Our basic principle is ‘Never compromise on quality of the furniture or its specification’. If sufficient data is not available, we don’t take the job. We cannot lower our standards, instead we opt for going beyond our already high standards. What is infrastructure and other strengths of your company? We produce furniture only to the extent that we can physically manage, not to the extent that our machines can produce. We always keep a single shift as buffer shift to meet the deadlines, as our operational philosophy is ‘ON TIME, EVERY TIME’. We have never come across a situation where we couldn’t deliver on time. We receive offers of huge scaleup but we do not avail them because we are yet to build up a comprehensive infrastructure. Currently, we are working with machine manufacturers to give us specific customized built CNC machines with multiple access. We are sure that bolstering our infrastructure and developing our new stream of panel processing will soon meet the demands of future. What are the signals that you find positive for India’s modular furniture industry? India’s modular furniture industry is growing very aggressively. Hundreds of new manufacturing units are being set up. With rise and growth of various suppliers of infrastructural material, machines and processing solutions or development in allied works like extraction, paint woods, roller coater, UV lines, automatic robotic press, etc., signal a sharp growth and bright prospect for modular furniture industry. Among Modular furniture and Solid wood or Kitchen specific sector, which one hasbigger potential? In my view, it is panel processing that will have bigger scope in future. Although when it comes to creation of

We produce furniture only to the extent that we can physically manage, not to the extent that our machines can produce. We always keep a single shift as buffer shift to meet the deadlines, as our operational philosophy is ‘ON TIME, EVERY TIME’. panels, the parameters one adopts matters a lot. In the kitchen segment, there are certain parameters that are faced like prone to water, heat, oils, fry fumes and dust, etc., and it has to be sufficient enough to withstand the abuse rather than its use. A kitchen has to be designed scientifically and ergonomically but it becomes a tricky and pricy affair. How do you see the role quality raw materials for furniture making? With regard to the input material that one uses, a careful selection must be done in terms of density and at least of E1 or E0 standard in terms of emission. Often, there is density variation, thickness variation within the board, across the board and a furniture maker can’t manufacture good furniture if the thickness variation is beyond the tolerance level. Plywood is a good material, but not calibrated in India. There is no concept of calibration, but everybody claims calibrated with a thickness variation of 0.5 to 1mm. There is density variation, gaps etc., which could be a breeding ground for termites/borers. Hence selecting quality material is very crucial for a furniture company, if it aspires to be successful. How do you see the entry of IKEA? IKEA will be a gamechanger in India. They will set standards which everybody will have to know. It will be a very good thing, in that India will realize the importance of standardization and it will help the entire furniture industry to grow. People are educated and everyone who wants to purchase furniture is eager for a correctly-done, long-lasting, value-for-money product and IKEA will be a www.plyreporter.com

We work on very set parameters for every activity such as sawing, edging, gluing etc. In case of any shortcoming, the onus and responsibility lies on the operator of the next operation process to reject or accept the material at that stage. We have very experienced employees for inspection and quality checks who have been working with us for a very long time, hence, if any deficiency has inadvertently continued till the last stage, it is taken care of there. We do not have any marketing and sales set up, yet success has found us by word-of-mouth. We put a lot of emphasis on R&D, as it is an integral part of our corporate philosophy and tradition—thus we keep ourselves abreast of the global trends.
