Phenol & dollar Prices are Painful yet eye oPening oPPortunity to recheck your strenth

The month of October extended an opportunity to plywood industries of Yamuna Nagar that if a Rs 100 per quintal price rise in timber can’t be passed on to the market, then what will be the scenario when 200 new peeling machines and units will come up in Uttar Pradesh in 2019 once new licenses are allotted? Eventually new industries in Uttar Pradesh will be choking the timber supply to the North based largest plywood cluster thus increasing their raw material cost to unprecedented levels.

T

he month of October and the previous one had various odds that riddled the wood panel and decorative laminate and veneer industry. Price of each major raw material sharply escalated that led to losses, panic and posed important questions about industry’s viability. There was no match between ‘sales and cost price’ specially when taxes paid in forms of income tax, GST (buying from sellers under composite tax) and cost of other compliance are genuinely calculated. The biggest jolt was felt to those laminate producing companies, who were happily producing 0.6/0.7/0.85/0/9 mm and cheap liner sheets. The phenol & dollar debacle presented a painful yet eye opening opportunity to such companies who somewhat realized the false calculation and price structure they were living with. Despite some price rise in HPL, majority of companies are still not at ease, because they somewhere deep inside know that ‘their business model is unviable.’ October witnessed sharp rise in Phenol + Formalin + Timber and equally sharp fall in payment collection. Doesn’t the upcoming manufacturers in such locations need an analysis check? Working blindly will only create more chaos. The on-going weak demand and phenol crisis is certainly an unwanted trouble, but it has offered an opportunity to recheck profitability cushion, fund strength and dealer’s behavior. It has extended a chance to find gaps with clue to choose the right price, a direction to choose a right channel partner and an urgent need to formulate right strategy for marketing and team building. In my opinion, the October crisis has offered a glimpse of the future that is filled with competition, compliance of law and cost analysis. It offered an opportunity to get a clue, whether your company can absorb, sustain and go on or come to a halt due to such jolts in business by 2020 and onwards? The companies with brand, clear terms, right pricing (that includes cost + profit + taxes + interest) and have system for strict vigil on payment collections were silently smiling. They know, they have the solid footing, good enough to grow better, 2019 onwards.

The other cluster Kennore produces better quality plywood and doors hence their pricing are near to branded products. Perumbavoor was in limelight during 20102014 for economical grade plywood when it was so low priced that it penetrated up to North and even eastern regions. With rise in availability of cheaper timber, North India gained acceptance again. In near future, the table seems to be turning towards south as industries in south have also began to access better timber availability.

I

n South India, nearly thousand of Small, Mid and Big sized manufacturing factories exist which includes ply, doors and even boards. Half of the factories are in Perumbavoor and its contiguous areas which are popularly known for producing economical grade products. The other cluster Kennore produces better quality plywood and doors hence their pricing are near to branded products. Perumbavoor was in limelight during 2010-2014 for economical grade plywood when it was so low priced that it penetrated up to North and even eastern regions. With rise in availability of cheaper timber, North India gained acceptance again. In near future, the table seems to be turning towards south as industries in south have also began to access better timber availability. The Kerala based industries also learned some lessons during this period and gradually understood that they would sustain on the basis of right product with quality. The GST reform is also giving much learning hence motivating them to reach to a level playing field so it is visible that after floods, Kerala is going to adopt organized working model with focus on film face and other products as well to grow further. Many branded companies are successfully sourcing good quality economical materials from here, and there is a greater confidence among manufacturers to offer quality range. Many Perumbavoor based units are commissioning modern machineries, making better products and more concerned about adequate utilization of raw materials and assuring consistent timber supply. There are reports, that there is a growing trend of plantation of Melia-Dubia and Eucaly in southern India states targeting wood panel industry. Kerala based plywood industries are looking towards manufacturing of rubber based Shuttering grade film faced plywood, truck flooring, Packaging grade plywood because rubber has suitable density for making quality grade construction, transportation and industrial grade plywood products. The new found energy and direction can be a new Era for Kerala Plywood Industry in coming future. This November issue of year 2018, has featured report on recent “Hike in prices of phenol, that has disrupted entire Laminate & Ply industry” for a month. There are various ground-based reports generated from team Ply Reporter in news section, which you find every month in Ply Reporter only. The interview with the owners of new entrant in Decorative Veneers manufacturing brand ‘ABHIYAN REGENCY’ and in Laminates ‘OVEL LAMINATES’ reflect their vision and plan. Besides, there is coverage related to happenings in wood panel and decorative industry in this issue. Shubh Deepawali!

Laminate manufacturing pLants hit, hpL production faLLs 50%

NEWS WATCH

I

28

ndia’s High-Pressure Laminates Industry has once again succumbed to raw material uncertainty leading to plants closure for week and few extending to two weeks. The decorative laminate industries have been going through tough phase due to steep surge in prices of raw materials and dollar combined impact. After base paper, phenol along with Methanol and Melamine impacted the manufacturing across the country. The phenol prices soared beyond 30% within a fortnight that forced the factories to stop plants as pre-booked orders of laminates on old selling prices were far lesser than viability range. The supply shortage and prevailing circumstances compelled majority of units to either reduce the production or stop the plant. On one side phenol scarcity choked the process flow, the other chemical Methanol and Melamine that are vital for HPL manufacturing prices surged by 15 % in the same period. The Ply Reporter correspondent from Gujarat reported that the producer had cut production by 60-70 percent, and most of the units are running one shift in 4 to 5 days in a week. Since the people of Gujarat observe a long holiday spell during Deepawali, hence the production is expected to be very slower till mid of November supported with the hope of easing of phenol prices. The North India based HPL units also reported to have reduced running time by 50 percent in October. The worst hit are plants that have been heavily producing liner grade laminates. According to reports cheap laminates and liner manufacturing is simply not viable hence many companies are reportedly waiting for the acceptance of increased laminate prices and easing of chemicals and other raw materials supplies. According to recent market reports, the liner grade laminates prices have witnessed a rise of Rs 30 per sheet during October last week.

We have been largely involved in creative designing field like catalogue designing, printing etc. We are also into Ceramic manufacturing. Since both the fields have similar tests and we are already associated with creative works, secondly the knowledge in this field, its market i.e. the selection of range and the presentation of the products to the targeted customers, hence we attracted to venture into laminate industry. What are the basics of product selection and its presentation? Our maximum collection is from Europe and some parts from China also by visiting there. In these countries we can find range from across the world. If we select from there, it is very rare that can be available in the domestic market. We are acquainted of that concept and the way we move ahead. So, we are well aware to above 50% of the markets and the probable competition in laminate industry before venturing into it. We go with the brands, we adopted their activity and working style. We adopted the same with extra care and innovation. You came into the market with the vision to go with high end segments, what is the objective behind it?

We have plant capacity of 1 lakh sheets per month and it has expansion opportunity for three presses so we can achieve 3 lakh sheets production capacity in future. This is our 1mm target, initially we are also making liner but that is based on service requirement. Despite, we have launched only 1mm single folder, another folder will also be for 1mm.

If you see our history, we have been in printing industry for over 12 years. In that industry also we are with the same concept to cater the high end segment with quality offerings. So we like to bring in something innovative and good quality. In Morbi, Gujarat we are the first company who is playing with the high price tag right from the beginning. In my opinion our folder’s review is also very good. If you ask others, they will also say the same. We have created an image and with that we are moving ahead. What are the exclusivities of folder and range offered by Ovel Laminate? Despite being higher price range our products are going good in this slowdown phase. We are making anti-finger laminate in single core which give us better quality with greater finish. For example in furniture making it does not display core and appears like corian (solid Surface) while without core laminate it looks ugly due to display of black edge. Today’s trend is white with wood colour/texture. In white furniture the core laminate has greater advantage. Besides, we have used ZERO FINISH PLATE which is new in the market and gives a natural feel, and also used two synchronised plates which is sync with full filled (8 ft) which facilitate us to get complete wooden finish in single sheet. It also facilitates to bypass the repetition in wooden finish textured laminates. It has another advantage in looks and feels which appears like veneer. In this way our concept is getting accepted in the market and our offerings are getting space as well, because there are two products veneers and Solid surface, which is consider as premium to laminates in surface décor products, and we are giving similar solution of both products. What are other benefits in your folder? First of all selection is totally European based and plates are also imported from Europe, so our direct comparison is with brands giving different feel from the mid and lower segment. We do not need to enforce much for product promotion because the much better understanding people like architects and interior designers are well accepting our offerings. Our products are not for lower or middle segment customers, but we are for high end premium segment. Till date our sale are good. Let see how the market change accordingly we will change our strategy. Are you going on right track as till date four months have passed after launching your folder? Yes, the folder’s response is very good. We are making efforts for that as we go deep into study for selection and also take views from distributors regarding its acceptability before coming to the market. We have six centres in www.plyreporter.com

henol, also known as carbolic acid, is a white crystalline solid, which has been historically produced through the oxidation of methyl-ethylbenzene, commonly called cymene, which is made from benzene. Starting with benzene and propane, the whole process includes three steps, with the only other major product being 2-propanone or acetone. Derivatives of phenol include phenol-resins, Bisphenol-A (BPA), Caprolactam, adipic acid.

Acetone, also sometimes known as 2-propanone or dimethyl ketone is widely used as a chemical intermediate in the production of other chemicals. Acetone is primarily used in the production of commercial products such as acrylic plastics, which are used for glazing, signs, lighting fixtures and displays. Acetone is also used in conjunction with phenol in the production of BPA. A year back, the Ply Reporter assessed a presentation made by Gujarat Government during Vibrant Gujrat program that focused on Indian phenol-acetone market. It mentioned that ‘the demand-supply gap in Indian phenol and acetone market is huge. The phenol is almost short by a supply gap of 238 Kilo Ton Per annum where as acetone supply had a gap of 202 KTPA in 2016. The lack of plants in India extends this opportunity to upcoming Chinese manufacturers who are targeting India market to sell their recently increased capacity. The presentation suggested that ‘Demand for phenol and acetone is estimated to reach 411KTPA and 362 KTPA respectively by 2020 thus offering huge potential for local manufacturers to set up manufacturing facilities within the country. Experts suggested that Indian phenol market is expected to reach Rs 30 billion by 2020 from just Rs 17 billion in 2012. Indian acetone market is expected to reach INR19 billion in 2020 from INR9 billion in 2012, growing at a CAGR of 10%. (It may have grown further than predicated says experts) It is noted that, SI group and HOCL are the only manufacturers of phenol and acetone in India, with a third new player DPL entering the segment. The growth in demand for phenol in the country is very bright as there is significant rise in Indian water-based adhesive market Phenol and acetone intermediates used as water-based adhesives in paints. Since the Government www.plyreporter.com

is restricting the use of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), solvent-based coatings are being replaced by water based coatings. As a result, there is immense scope for phenol and acetone manufacturers to set up a plant in India in order to reduce import dependency in the paint industry. Phenol and acetone are key raw materials for manufacturing herbicides and pesticides for crop protection and yield improvement. Bisphenol-A (BPA) is the biggest market for phenol and acetone. Demand for bisphenol-A is driven by growth in electronics industry in India, which is anticipated to reach US$400 billion in 2022 from US$69.6 billion in 2012, growing at a CAGR of 24.4%. India is currently import-dependent country for phenol. The country is said to be importing around 2.5 lakh tonne of phenol till last year data suggests. In India, there are two phenol manufacturing facilities are operational one each at Mumbai and Kochi. Twice a year, Phenol witness sudden shortage or supply crunch that leaves a heavy impact on annual balance sheets of the companies operating in decorative laminate, plywood and other composite panels. Every time, a sharp rise in prices of phenol creates panic situation and manufacturers feel helpless and even blackmailed.

In Panel Industry, many believe it is done intentionally to make good earnings supported by joint pooling in case of Phenol and formalin. The laminate industry and densified film face plywood industry were the worst hit with the sudden phenol surge because not only factories were shut but many disputes for material emerged. The old and pending order in ply and laminate, on the contrary almost 30 percent rise in a week thus rise of 7 to 8% in cost became a reason for many feud and disputes. India import around 80% of the phenol & acetone it consumes. Expert comment that Indian local phenol

The advt., expenses and duties determine product flow from US, Taiwan, China, South Africa, South Korea Thailand, Singapore etc. There has been significant rise in Phenol production in China that has an impact on prices in India. There are capacities now in Beijing, Shanghai and in Zhejiang, Guangdong etc in China which are readily supplying to Asian markets including India and if booking are done by importers, the sudden rise at such high levels can’t be expected commented a phenol bulk purchaser to the Ply Reporter correspondent. The wood panel industry and market believes that once Deepak Phenolics Ltd. Plant functions in full swing, such situations will be avoided because the wide gap between India’s demand and supply in Phenol will improve. It is noted that Deepak Phenolics Ltd is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Deepak Nitrite Ltd and is expected to begin its commercial production at its Mega-Plant for Phenol & Acetone. The DPL plant is of 200,000 MTPA facilities, aligned to ‘Make in India’ initiative of Government of India. The plant also has capacity to manufacture 120,000 MT per annum of its co-product Acetone. This is supported by capacity to manufacture 260,000 MT of Cumene for captive consumption. The Chemicals major Deepak Nitrite has set an ambitious target to achieve $1 billion turnover in the next three to four years, with its upcoming Rs 1,400-crore phenol-acetone facility at Petroleum, Chemicals and Petrochemicals Investment Region (PCPIR) in Dahej, Gujarat. Deepak Nitrate ltd manufactures bulk chemicals and commodities along with specialty chemicals

prices tend to follow international trends and china prices too. The domestic benchmark price is usually derived on the basis of Kandla port where more than 90% of phenol imports are discharged. Usually prices are based on CIF + Basic Customs Duty + Costs that totals to Imported phenol price trend.
