The recent changes in policy regarding freeing up wood panel industry form licensing are a favourable step. The changes allow establishment of new wood based industries in the country (except North East, UT). The new guidelines make a strong possibility for opening of MDF, Particle Board, Plywood pasting, Flush Doors and other wood based furniture units in many deserving states. UP, Haryana, North Bengal, South India etc could be the key places for this. This is going to improve plantation and give big boost to wood based industries.

T

he plywood laminate and timber markets are still struggling even after 2 months of GST implementation. ‘Sales are weak, payments are not coming and uncertainty looms everywhere, be it for a manufacturer or a dealer’.

The sales in plywood have seen a massive drop of around 35-40 percent from its levels recorded in Feb-March 17. Timber suppliers are not much happy either. Touble faced by small retailers and traders and their complaints to the new GST law is genuine because it is giving them sleepless nights. Particle Board and MDF sales are at average level but that too is based on discounting support. The sales in decorative laminates are down by 20-25 percent. You may come across few people who claim, they are not that affected which is mainly due to addition of new stockist in every region and the sales are largely primary. The only bright spot we can see is the good demand for Film Face Ply, mid segment brand’s plywood ply and HPL. There are hopes that Government will bring some relief by easing up GST norms but the sentiments at present are negative, the hope for revival is equally bullish. Many industrialists fear about more competition because the installed capacity is already way high as compared to current demand scenario. However, it is equally true that farmers are not planting trees with the enthusiasm they should have done. The future is going towards ‘survival of the efficient, smartest and visionary entrepreneurs’ in this segment for sure. The move is undoubtedly the needed step to boost confidence of for better price and to create a sustainable “timber supply vs industrial demand” equilibrium. While travelling to different markets, I often ask and research, ‘Are businesses/ enterprises doing what they must do? Factory owners are supposed to adopt and charge taxes from the market. Are they doing? Enormous efforts are required for skill development, creating awareness and motivation in each enterprise within the ecosystem. Are they building up? And do retailers & distributors understand the situation of manufacturers? Or, are we all running our fingers in calculators to add up more wealth? Briefly, I can conclude by saying, “Wood Panel Industry needs to do a lot, a lot!” Those who are doing it today, shall be the ‘best profit making businesses of tomorrow’ Shubh Deepawali!

Decorative veneers are Forever if you have knowledge and passion !

At present the Decorative Veneer market is of approx Rs. 3000 crore that include every category of veneers. The Decorative veneers market rely on innovation, presentation, offering, group match, stocking capacity, passion of selling, retailers connect and the most importantly the knowledge about the products and species.

T

he luxury products were said to be the most affected post DeMo. Many of the luxary items in building material witnessed a similar impact during February 17 to June 17 at least. But the assumptions were not much true for decorative veneer, its demand posted a consistency during the same period. Although, the margins of producers and retailers reportedly dropped due to weak sentiment of buyers but growing number of showrooms and display of decorative items in cities has been able to support the demand. If the decorative veneer category is not fast growing then it is not slowing down either. It is a fact that retailers are real driver of decorative veneers sales in India because their choice of offerings high end luxury products through attractive display and willing to deal with high net worth value customers and sophisticated designers are the primary buyers for this product. The market is flooded with variety of decorative products such as laminates, wall papers, paints, cement boards, fabric, PVC, metal, tiles and many artificial highlighters and it is interesting to visualize that entire decorative panel products try to copy-paste veneer look-like designs. Although only some of these items have got success in Indian market, because there is a variety of customers with different choices and budget but Veneers are natural, unique, awesome, exotic, aesthetic and unmatchable product which are regarded as the most valued and most favoured by retailers as well has architects and designers. At present the Decorative Veneer market is of approx Rs. 3000 crore that include every category of veneers. The Decorative veneers market rely on innovation, presentation, offering, group match, stocking capacity, passion of selling, retailers connect and the most importantly the knowledge about the products and species. What Ply Reporter findings hint ‘The producers must educate the retailers about ways of handling customers’ and the more they help new retailers to learn the art of selling, the more growth will be seen for retailers/showroom owners and decorative veneer brands’. TPR survey among showrooms indicate, that many new showrooms keep veneer to showcase but they don’t have the skillset to present and sell, but many of the retailers are very smart and updated with the art of presenting veneers and such retailers dare to keep stocks and hence they have become the actual driver of decorative veneers in India. We all need to identify more of them and educate for further growth. In this October issue, we have a report on ‘why to sell decorative veneers’ which is a worth read for industry and Trade. The issue also presents an interaction with the brain behind laminates brand Virgo, Mr. Surinder Arora. Mr Pravin Patel, MD of Airolam Limited views are important after listing of successful IPO of Airolam and that presents an example for other mid and small size companies. News on free license for wood panel manufacturing units and its effect on UP. The present market situation of wood, Ply, MDF, PB, HPL, PVC, are also reported, along with the coverage of Showroom in Delhi by ‘Bansal Interio’. With much more info and continuous efforts for more valued input, we wish you a prosperous Deepawali !

s reported earlier by The Ply Reporter there has been phenomenal change in Government policy towards boosting the prospects for opening wood panel furniture industries in the country. The change in guidelines is published in ‘Government of India gazette’ issues by Ministry of Environment & Forest on dated 12th September 2017 in gazette number 2625.The guidelines offer clarity on freeing up the establishments of plywood, panel and furniture units and designate the poser to SLC to take decisions as per available rules and facts. If they are using agro-forestry timber species that require a small window for pasting units but does not allow any establishment of peeling, slicing or sawing unit anywhere in India. The gazette says, “the State Level Committee (SLC) shall assess the availability of timber in the state by way of appropriate study on demand and supply as and when it decides. SLC shall devise suitable mechanism for sustainable use of timber in a way that does not affect the forests of the area adversely. The SLC shall approve the name of wood based industries which may be considered for grant of fresh license or enhancement of the existing licensed capacity in case the SLC is satisfied that timber is available legally for the said new Wood Based Industries (such as Trees outside forest, Forests etc.). It further states that SLC shall ensure that the amount lying with the respective State Forest Departments (recovered from Wood Based Industries) is utilized for the purpose of afforestation only. Virgo group is now producing laminates from 4 different facilities located in Barwala, Punjab; Dera Bassi near Chandigarh, Punjab; Himachal Pradesh and Bhiwadi, Rajasthan. With 3 presses on each location, we have a manufacturing capacity of 13.5 lac sheet every month. Each of the units has a separate brand entity and each has a separate market share in India at present. We are in process of merging all the decorative laminate manufacturing units under one company as Virgo Laminates ltd. We have heard about expansion plans of Virgo in Gujarat. Can you elaborate about your vision and future manufacturing expansion plans for HPL or new products if any? Yes, we are going ahead with expansion in HPL manufacturing capacity now. We have identified land in Ahmedabad, Gujrat for ACP and HPL manufacturing. In Gujarat, we aim to add large size presses apart from regular ones and enable this facility for exporting to whole Asia & the World. Are you coming up with Aluminium Composite Panel manufacturing on the same location? Yes, in fact Ahmedabad plant will begin operation of manufacturing Aluminium Composite Panels and in second phase we will produce HPL. The ACP production shall commence in beginning of next financial year. We will produce all variety of top quality ACP for domestic and exports markets including Fire grade or A2 grade. After starting the Aluminium Composite Panels, in another six months we will be ready with decorative laminate production in Gujarat plant. We also aim to expand the ‘Aluminium rolling unit’ operations. We already have an Aluminium Rolling manufacturing plant in Himachal Pradesh and now we will be adding another in Gujarat. We will add rolling mill and other allied machineries for Aluminium rolling products and aim to double our present capacity. What is the present ‘Laminate Industry and Trade’ scenario? Despite of little weakness which is temporary, I will call it good for all. Laminate consumption is steadily

growing in India and we all get more clarity through Ply Reporter’s survey reports time to time. Of course, there are now more options available for dealers because many new manufacturers have entered in HPL manufacturing but it also requires regular efforts and knowledge of markets and trends. This is the time when people shall be cautious in dealings on the basis of ‘credit behaviour’ and ‘working style of people’ before making commitments. Laminate manufacturing is not just a plant based work, it is a full time involving work. Many new plants are reportedly being added and majority of them keep talking about expansions. What about new laminate industries and HPL future in the country in long term? Industries are always established keeping long term view not on the basis of present scenario. If you observe, MDF lines are also growing in India which will bring major change after 6-7 years. In developed countries 80 percent of wood panel needs are fulfilled by MDF not plywood but in India, this ratio is reverse. Once the demand for MDF will grow, there would be a trend of declining demand for HPL. Hence, in long term perspective, too many plants would not be in position to sustain. If there will be too much of MDF availability then there might be a gradual shift from plywood to MDF and that may halt the growth of HPL too. And this might change with time hence laminate demand growth may turn to declining side after 5-6 years. Now you seem to switch from distributor model to company warehousing driven distribution in the country? Is it planned or just due to competition? In majority of states, the distributor driven marketing is not feasible in present competitive scenario. There are various limitations like many www.plyreporter.com

,d fjVsyj dks Msdksjfs Vo oqM fofu;j D;ksa cspuk pkfg,\ We all know, selling decorative veneer is not just price based selling, instead it is an art. It is a belief in nature and a package of class, satisfaction and status, you choose to create around you. This article is an honest effort of the Ply Reporter to update those plywood-laminate counters who believe that decorative veneer is not for them. In fact, the article allows you to narrow down your though process towards clarity and the eagerness to take the next step forward. The article is prepared based on the observations made by Reporter’s team on the ongoing practices in different markets. We felt the need to highlight the core facts behind selling and presenting decorative veneers at retailers place today. The concept of decorative wood veneer is very strong in West and South India compared to Northern India. The Ply Reporter team worked on finding the purpose that “why and what shall be the real motive of a dealer to sell wood veneers” and highlight the fact behind why a customer may like to purchase and use natural veneers instead of decorative laminates. www.plyreporter.com

If a dealer wish to rise high, and has passion to grow and make money. He cannot be away from selling decorative veneer.

T

o do interior and wood work, designers plan the application area according to customer preference and design theme. It is proven that in our various surveys conducted on time to time that decorative veneer has no competition with any material. It is an inspirational item for customers and limitless beauty experimentation material for architects. Hence any brand or company who claim to be a surfacing expert company has to enter in decorative veneer and if they are not that means they are leaving the most precious and pride segment of customers and architects. The same applies to a plywood dealer who may be selling a large volume or monthly sales of over 50 lakh but if he is not selling wood veneers then, he is missing to be in a league to retail businessmen who cater to the prestigious architects and top-class clientele in the country. According to our group magazines (‘The Ply Reporter’ and ‘Surfaces’ that caters to architects and designers and FDT (Furniture Design & Technology) that caters to OEM and Furniture makers and sellers have a combined survey on “Need and Demand pattern of Surface Materials in India’
