Producing Plywood!

Why Big Volumes, if not selling @10% margin on 30-45 days payment schedule?

Editorial

Pragat Dvivedi, Founder Editor

20

The Plywood industry’s Capacity vs Demand Gap has widened where capacity is higher by 50% or can say there is double the capacity than demand. Unlike laminate where you need design and marketing sense to grow, in plywood you just need to reduce price to finish your stock. And that is why plywood industry has begun bleeding and soon its impact shall reach to tradersretailers as well.

P

lywood is a commodity material, though in India it is sold like branded products. Consumer does ask for brand recognition, but percentage of such people is merely 5-7%, and growing. Plywood is largely purchased on the basis of recommendation from Dealers, Carpenters and even sometimes referred/ specified by Architects-Interior designers. According to the market demand patterns analysed by us at Ply Reporter of past 12 years, retail sales dominate in Plywood. The Retail customers catered by retail shop and dealers has 65-70% of market dominance where as commercial projects/bulk account for remaining 30%. In case of project purchases, Plywood prices are directly linked with sales volumes but do price fluctuation matter to a retail customer? Does Plywood price increase/decrease reach to an end consumer? In retail markets, whatever the prices are, customers buys after some market comparison and little bargain from the dealer. Also in retail sales, the dealers buy plywood from factories or distributors after tough negotiation and sell at 15- 20% plus margins. Hence a customer is hardly influenced by plywood price increase or decrease unlike cement-steel or other commodities. In every industry, Price rise according to raw material cost & external factors takes place and simply put, the plywood prices must be increased now to survive and grow. The Plywood industry’s Capacity vs Demand Gap has widened where capacity is higher by 50% or can say there is double the capacity than demand. Unlike laminate where you need design and marketing sense to grow, in plywood you just need to reduce price to finish your stock. And that is why plywood industry has begun bleeding and soon its impact shall reach to traders-retailers as well. You may agree, in Plywood, pricing is a game played within B2B circles that starts from a manufacturer and end before entry of a customer, hence Industry & trade should work together to prevent business losses and save the entire ecosystem before it becomes throat cutting for every stakeholder. The losses to industries would certainly not make the dealers any stronger or richer. In fact, “Plywood Trade & Industry” must work in co-operation to safeguard each other. Those who are desperate, fighting for volumes or selling without calculating ‘interest + taxes’, even below the cost, must know “Sales without profits will not let you grow”, because profits make business thrive not the losses, irrespective of volumes. If one has enough money to burn, he can but will it last? The best sensible way is to “produce according to your capital + margins, with interest on that capital”. Why to offer long credit period for which you are not getting any interest and yet selling in volumes to parties who may disappear without paying. Ask yourself, are you Not witnessing this? Why to produce big, if you are not able to sell with a decent margin and on 30-45 days payment duration. Better is to Optimise, Curtail and Sustain. Plywood & Laminates both segments are on the same boats and the realisation shall dawn on every industrialist, and seller, sooner or later. Do not miss to read the article on Present status of Indian Plywood Sector, published on page 162 to 174. Enjoy reading The Ply Reporter

Decorative veneers, Forever!

apni baat

Rajiv Parashar, Editor

24

Only decorative plywood supplies do not create its demand but it needs lot of passion, practical knowledge and art of identifying the need of customers and its application sense. Coatings and its applicators are also very much important for this segment growth. That is why the veneer sales are driven by designer fraternity. Hence decorative veneer manufacturers and retailers must continue to Create, Innovate, Promote and Reach out to designers’ fraternity for further growth in this product category.

I

n last 5 years, we have observed a huge production capacity addition in entire wood panel and surface décor materials be it ply, particle boards, MDF, Decorative laminate, PVC sheets etc. All these categories have posted capacity growth by more than 100 percent. Only the decorative veneer sector has been able to maintain areasonable balanced growth in capacity as well as market. There is no major capacity addition seen in natural veneer segment, although some focused brands in this segment such as Decowood, Timex Veneer, Real ply etc have expanded their capacity but in a decent way. Some new brands have also been launched by manufacturers and traders, but few brands have almost vanished from marketand lost their market share. If we conclude the market of Decorative Veneer, which is Rs. 2500 crores annually, has registered a decent growth of 10-12 percent year on year despite emergence of many interior surface décor products. The successful veneer brands are maintaining good cash flow, respectable profit margins, goodwill among buyers and consistent innovation in range. They know, how to present the veneer, and what should be the best-selling model. The emergence of showrooms are one of the drivers of decorative veneer growth. According to Ply reporter findings, there are approx 2500 showrooms presently apart from other 7000 shops selling veneers in India. Although veneer selling needs lots of passion, investments and knowledge, that is why, a showroom owner always challenge others by saying ‘Dare to Sell Veneer’ (VeneerBechKeDikhao)! Decorative veneer market trend indicates the legacy of this wonderful product, because it is a niche product, natural and conventional décor surface, exclusive surface material and aesthetic appearance. In this September 2018 issue, which has bunch of ground market reports related to timber, veneer, plywood, laminates, PVC, Dollar affect and products launch. The analysis on ‘Present status of Indian Plywood Sector’ based on Ply Reporter market research is worth read and eye-opener for Industry, which is presented as ‘Cover Story’ in this issue. The interaction with AIPMA President Mr. Deveder Chawla and LM Engineering promoter Mr. K KSaha on Dryer are also interesting read for entire plywood sector. WADe Asia, Asia biggest platform for celebrating women led development (attended by 600 leading architects of India), held in New Delhi along with other happenings in wood panel and laminate trade are also featured in this issue. Keep reading and send your view !

The reports reveal that Building, roof, raw materials stock, finished good stocks, machines, electrical items, panel board and factory floor and landscape are damaged forever. In Kerala there are about 750 plywood manufacturing units among which around 450 units are located in Perumbavoor and contiguous area. The biggest plywood manufacturing cluster, Perumbavoor alone produces huge quantity of plywood every day. Mr. M. M Mujeeb Rahman said to The ply Reporter that it would take minimum 2 to 3 months to recover from the present damage to recuperate situation. Due to this natural calamity, price of the raw wood cost has increased hence this situation is bound to increase plywood cost as well he added further. “Roads in these districts, especially in Idukki and Pathanam are badly damaged. Many rubber trees got uprooted in the heavy rains. Transporting timber to Perumbavoor is a difficult task now. This has caused shortage of raw material and brought down production by 50 %. Currently, we purchase rubber wood locally,” said Mr. Shafeek P K, Vice President, SOPMA. Concerned about the situation of plywood industry, Mr. Rahman said that the situation is so challenging at present that industrialists dealing in plywood have no option other than starting a business from scratch. With regard

to damages and losses, he informed that the industries department has recently visited all factories and have collected all statements and details about the damages and loss from each one. Expecting a support from government to restart the operations, he said “We are expecting a loan amount of Rs 25 lacs for each factory without interest from government. We are ready to pay the amount after recovery in a 1 or 2 year time but it should be without interest as factory owners are not in a situation to pay any kind of interest. The financial loss to the industry is unimaginable and recoverability will take a long time feels majority of manufacturers in Perumbavoor region. The impact of Kerala floods are already visible in southern markets where material supplies have witnessed a sharp fall. The orders for all poplar plywood has once again increased to substitute the Perumbavoor supplies for a while. Although plywood manufacturers in other parts of Kerala, whose plants are unaffected has increased their production hours to cater the supply gap. The Ply Reporter found that Perambavoor plywood cluster would be able to gain normalcy in another 2 months once maintenance and reestablishment of machines completes.

‘All PoPlAr Plywood’ suPPly shrinks, Price increAses by 15%

T

NEWS WATCH

he ‘All Poplar Ply’ prices have jumped over 15 % in last one month due to rising poplar log prices in North India. There is tremendous tightness in availability of Poplar logs in North due to limited availability and higher industrial demand. The impact is clearly seen on finished product where plywood prices have moved upward by Rs 3.50 and above per square feet. Market report confirms that if dealer wishes to get all poplar plywood range, he has to pay around 20 % higher price compared to prices 2 months before. It is reported that prices of Poplar logs are hovering above a difference of INR 200 plus per quintal. The estimates reveal that log prices have shot up by 40 % during last 50 days and it tends to increase further because of demand-supply scenario.

The plywood production capacity in North India has almost doubled during last 2 years due to expansion in existing plants, modernization, machineries and commencement of new manufacturing establishments, which has led to increase the consumption of timber. On the contrary, the planters are not taking interest in plantation of Poplar timber because they are not getting expect prices of their logs and gradually the plantation area have been reduced since last 3 to 4 years. With rising cost, plywood Industry is switching to alternate plywood manufacturing instead of all poplar as cost of Poplar Core Veneer and Eucalyptus have been leveled. With almost higher poplar cost, relevance of all poplar has come to an end hence giving a way to era of alternate ply demand in 2018-19 onwards. The Ply Reporter analyzed and found that ‘offering fullpoplar plywood at present pricing, is a net loss-making affair for producers, hence different state associations have begun demanding price increase announcements on local levels. There are people who are still willing to buy all poplar ply at increased prices hence a small segment of market will continue to purchase and sell ‘All Poplar Ply’ at higher prices and various small plywood producers would still produce these segment range to retain their market. With extended spell of rainy season, the prices are not coming down any time soon predict market experts from timber segment.

The ‘compeTiTive environmenT on The basis of producTion volumes’, is a big reason behind in price rise of poplar logs, says Mr. Devender Chawla, President, AIPMA

The Ply Reporter spoke to Mr Devender Chawla, President, All India Plywood Manufacturers Association ( AIPMA) to know the industry view on rising raw material prices and possibility of plywood price increase. Mr Chawla who has been active in plywood industry needs and welfare time to time expressed an urgent need of meeting on curtailing down production volumes an announcing Price Increase as soon as possible. Read the interaction in detail… www.plyreporter.com

The big brands who are buying, outsourcing plywood and getting stamped and then offering on a cheaper price is nothing but an orchestred plan for pushing small industry towards NO SURVIVAL point. This painful and destructive plan for small plywood units is actually going to cause problem for distributors and dealers too because they will have to loose margins too. Hence, manufacturers and dealers both need to think twice before falling in this trap.

The Ply RePoRTeR september 2018

135 The Poplar prices have increased by 35-40 percent, what are the reasons? Undoubtedly the poplar prices have jumped by 35 to 40 % during last 3 month. The reason behind rising prices of timber is largely due to increased production, more units of wood panel manufacturing products hence increased demand of wood. Additionally, the poplar log supply shortage due to erratic and heavy rains in Northern region has also added oil in the fire. Can you please tell, how there is sudden increase in production?

In April the prices were announced to increase by 6 %, but after a while, the price rise of plywood could not sustain the momentum. The rise in competition due to increased production volumes by old as well as new factories created pressure and prices came down again. With temporary ease in log prices, manufacturers were able to bear for 8-10 days but after that prices jumped again and now there is tremendous pressure on price increase. The manufacturing cost has gone up sharply hence a genuine price increase should have been prevailed for betterment of the industry and trade.

The plywood plants which normally run on a 12 to 16 hours shift in entire northern belts have increased their production feeling a pressure from new and big size plants. Even the new plants that have come during last one year are producing Day & Night, following which many units have become aggressive and increased productivity. The “competing environment’ on the basis of production volumes, is a big reason behind in price rise of Poplar logs apart from rain.

Not only Poplar, the prices of our 2-3 raw material products like phenol, formaldehyde and others have also increased. Face veneer is another area that is causing fluctuation and cost rise to plywood. The demand and supply gap widening, which is the reason for disturbed payment schedule. There is pain everywhere in payment due to excess supply of finished goods and this has to be controlled jointly for which we are having meetings to reach to an acceptable solution so that industry and trade can work in a healthy way.

Despite of jump in Timber, Veneer and Chemical prices, we hear about too much pressure on plywood manufacturers, but finished goods prices are not increasing, why?

There are a few Face Veneer option that could be explored and developed within India. I believe in time to come, we would be working to develop an indigenous option for www.plyreporter.com

INDIAN PLYWOOD INDUSTRY: BATTLING FOR MARKET, SRUGGLING FOR MARGINS, TEST OF PETIENCE BEGINS,

Plywood industry has entered into cut- throat competition mode. India has around 2800 operational wood panel processing factories practically that can be counted as plywood producing factories. Though in last two years alone, the production capacity has grown almost equal to 4000 units where as demand has remained same barring few months when it was a free orders flow. This analogy is not written statistically just because everyone in the trade can understand. The Ply Reporter thought to explain the changing dynamics of plywood industry & trade for its readers who look forward for some meaningful insight through this magazine as what is happening and what might be in store ahead.

The Ply RePoRTeR september 2018

Analysing the situation of different market segments, Ply Reporter team segregated the different price band and product categories operating in plywood industry. One may not agree or has all the freedom to disagree with the following definitions, but it is not an effort to define instead it is explained to establish what we at Ply Reporter wish every stake holder in wood panel category must be readily aware with. The present market space is occupied by Branded, Semi branded, Emerging Semi brands and non-branded plywood players. Each category is holding some large or small share. What we found realistic as definition worth reminding in present scenario mentioned as below.

This category is making efforts to present themselves as second options if Branded ones are not yielding good margins to dealers. The semi branded segment is the hot category at present who are being wanted by dealers but it lacks clarity, branding spend, reach and right affordable positioning. They have good chances, if they can find their gaps and infuse more capital.

cover story

SEMI BRANDED SEGMENT;

PLUS- Known Brand, Good quality, Capital, Able to convince new dealers, emotional connect

MINUS – No Clear policy, Convention spending

BRANDED SEGMENT; This segment is still in comfortable position with market conditions because they are managing to get orders and payments as well. It is still better and satisfied though not highly profitable at present but in better favourable condition than ever before.

PLUS- Brand image, Market Presence, Clear policy, Capital, Sales team, Able to dictate terms MINUS- Lack of connect, Driven by hierarchy, Higher overheads, Offers low margins for dealers STATUS- Good, Growing, Expanding market share

approach, Not backed by research, ambiguity in pricing, Not able to make team, continuity

STATUS- Better, Trying to expand, Hopeful yet confused

EMERGING SEMI BRANDED; The emerging semi branded category has plenty of new entries who are shifting upward from unbranded segment. They are the ones who have decided to choose their path but are struggling to cope up with all side attack. They have pressure yet are trying to create space genuinely with average quality, genuine price.

PLUS- Good quality, Affordable price, Flexible terms, Ready to trust and connect
