First Things first...Please Note:

Some of you - no doubt - have noticed that there were no issues of PML produced during the summer months. Towards the end of this past June, we were besieged by a multitude of family health issues. This situation was awkward and complex enough to justify our suspending publication for most of this past summer. We are a small operation, and as such, we really feel it when unplanned, unpredictable life events take center stage - whether we want them to or not.

The good news is this: We are almost fully back on track, and we’re glad to be back! With this issue we are striving to get back up to speed, and get back to a regular monthly schedule. As you read this, we are already hard at work on the September - October issue. As a token of our appreciation for your patience and understanding during this very difficult period, we have extended all current subscription terms and advertiser accounts forward 3 months. We sincerely thank all of you for bearing with us. Now...

This month we take a closer look at a brand new Racing School recently formed in Orange County, California by the brother and sister team of Hallie and Nathan Schwartzbaugh. The School is called - aptly - “Orange County Race Craft”. PML attended the inaugural event in July. To simply say that we were impressed is an understatement. The Schwartzbaughs have certainly done their homework. The whole event was well coordinated, well run, and lots of people had smiles on their faces. This event has enormous potential and is poised to grow. Our friend and fellow vintage racer Efrain Olivares Jr. provides an “on-track” perspective. His fine read begins on page 5.

We’re happy to present the early 911 “secret decoder ring” on page 6. These charts walk you through the maze of engine, chassis, and transaxle serial numbers, for the 911 cars built between 1968 and 1973. We hope this data helps you decipher what it is you really brought home for that unbelievable price. PML is now covering Porsche auction activity. We attended both the RM and the Russo & Steele auctions that took place in Monterey last August. We are quite new to the whole auction process so our coverage and overall approach to the subject should be considered a “work in progress”. Our list of completed sales from Monterey can be found on page 7.

As always, we are constantly striving to improve our product. Our door is always open for comments, suggestions, complaints, or vintage race parts, so give us a call. We’re always glad to chat and talk Porsche. We are also currently looking for help in several areas of the publication including coverage of the aforementioned auction activity. Track Time - In The Middle Of Orange County?

he Orange County Great Park (aka The former El Toro Marine Base) is impressive – in its current state, in its ambition, and in the political and economic red tape that seems to surround it. For car nuts, however, its long and expansive concrete runways just beg for a fast car to stretch its legs. Think Silverstone, or even the Top Gear test track. Thankfully, Orange County Race Craft has now made high performance driving in the heart of Orange County possible with its performance driving school.

An impressive fleet of instructors awaited the students at the first OCRC school, held July 16 and 17. Former American LeMans Series driver and Porsche GT3 Challenge champion Nathan Swartzbaugh headed the group that included former Indy 500 pole-sitter Roberto Guerrero and Grand-Am driver Drew Staveley, among other drivers with performance driving, sports car racing, drifting, and open-wheel experience. Future schools will include noted Porsche drivers James Sofronas, Craig Stanton, Patrick Long, and Dominick Farnbacher.

A hospitality tent with catered breakfast awaited the students, who wheeled in an impressive array of cars. Ferrari, Porsche, AMG Mercedes, BMW, and Lotus were all well represented along with a Ford GT, Mini Cooper S, Dodge Challenger and a Mazda RX-8 to spice things up a bit. After a great breakfast to kick off the day, students were broken up into groups with two or three instructors handling each group. Four driving exercises would take place: dry skidpad, wet skidpad, threshold/trail braking, and apex.

The course itself is a 1.5 mile course with an interesting combination of 2nd and 3rd gear corners of varying radii. Brakes are definitely tested on this track, but as it is smartly laid out, the penalty for going off course (or spinning) is very minimal – nothing more than a few crushed cones and some serious ego bruising. hander, it’s a short blast into a wide hairpin. Be gentle on the throttle on the exit, as it is easy to get wheelspin. Grab third gear through a fast, right handed sweeper and on the brakes again for a second-gear right hander that tightens on the exit. Out of the right hander, and there is a fast left sweeper, followed by a fast right sweeper and you’re back on the pit straightaway.

All this fun, and no driving two hours into the Mojave Desert or Central Valley required. There can’t be any easier or better way to find out what your Porsche is really capable of. e sincerely hope the above hasn’t actually happened to you! From time to time, and time again…we get inquiries on serial numbers on various cars, and what they indicate.

On this page we have compiled breakouts on Chassis, Engine, and Transmission Serial numbers for the ’68 – ’73 early 911s. We hope the charts are easy to follow, and that they help in identifying and verifying that special 911…

Here at PML, we have been busy assembling a Technical Library. It is a true “work in progress” we are constantly adding to. Montery Auction Results 2009

ontery, August, 2009 This year’s trip to Monterey - as in years past - was jam-packed with things to do and things to see. It is impossible to try and capture all the goings on throughout the week. This year marks the first time we at PML have covered any auction activity on the Monterey Peninsula. We’re afraid we’re now hooked!

It was quite the experience...We limited our attendance to just two of the auctions listed to the right; RM Auctions, and Russo & Steele were our choices. These two venues are very, very different from each other. We bring this up because being first timers - the sales environment had a profound effect on us, and not necessarily in a positive manner. We couldn’t help but notice the dark, dim lighting (except for over the auction block) at the Russo & Steele event. This darkness was not conducive (to us) to being in a good mood to bid on anything, at least from an “impulse perspective”. Remember, these were our first auctions, so please take all this with a king-sized grain of salt. The RM Auction by contrast, was brightly lit and staged in a much larger room (which was standing room only ). The two venues attracted differerent types of crowds - with a lot of folks running back and forth between the two venues, being they were across the street from each other. How Convenient, No?

The results to the left will show Porsche sales this year to be a real mixed bag. The cars themselves were in general very nicely turned out - with a couple of notable exceptions, among the ones we inspected. When one considers what the market looked like 18-24 months ago, we consider a lot of these cars “very well bought”. We had fun watching these auctions. In fact, we plan to include more Porschespecific auction results as a regular feature through out the year. We think it’s a significant part of the Porsche Marketplace - despite some of the numbers not being in total alignment with Private Party and Dealer Sales. So, watch these pages in upcoming issues!

‘09 U.S. Sales: It Was A Long, Hot Summer

Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), importer and distributor of Porsche sports cars and Cayenne SUVs in the United States, announced June sales in the U.S. of 902 units compared to the same period last year when it sold 2,650. For the first half of the year—clearly one of the most challenging car markets in recent history—Porsche has sold 9,659 cars compared to last year when it sold 15,086 during the same six-month period. For the month of June, Porsche’s Approved Certified Pre-Owned vehicle sales were 620, compared to 576 for the same period last year.

JULY

U.S. sales for the month of July totaled 1,544 compared to last year’s mark of 3,128, a decrease of 51.6 %. Year-to-date, Porsche has sold 11,203 cars compared to the same period in 2008 when it sold 18,214. Having spanned one of the most difficult economic periods in recent history, Porsche’s fiscal year 08/09 ended July 31. PCNA closed the fiscal year with total U.S. sales of 19,024 versus 31,818 in the previous fiscal year. In addition, dealers sold 515 Porsche Approved Certified Pre-Owned cars in July versus 623 for the same period last year.

AUGUST

August sales in the U.S. of 1,526 units compared to the same period last year when it sold 1,404, up 9 percent. Notable for the month were sales of the 911 model, which were 673 versus last year’s figure of 351, an increase of 92 percent and the best sales results for Porsche’s famous sports car in nearly a year. For the month, Porsche’s Approved Certified Pre-Owned vehicle sales were 567, compared to 609 for the same period last year. So far in 2009, Porsche’s overall year-to-date sales are 12,729 versus last year’s when they were 19,618, a decrease of 35 percent.
