Racing season is in full swing. As we go to press every major series such as the American LeMans Series (ALMS), Grand Am, The worldThe MuscleMilk Porsche RS Spyder Of Greg Pickett And wide Carrera Cup Klaus Graf At Long Beach, Enroute To A Podium Finish series, The SPEED World Challenge, and countless club race organizations have all run at least three events on their respective calendars. The Porsche Marque is well respresented by privateers and Factory-backed Teams the world over.
In this issue we shine the light on a racing Porsche that is poised to change the racing landscape in a big way: The GT3 R Hybrid. The GT3 R Hybrid Porsche race car debuted in March in Geneva, Switzerland, alongside the Hyrbrid Cayenne and the radical 918 Hybrid supercar. This triumvirate of hybrid platforms makes it crystal clear that Porsche is Very Serious about green technology. Regardless whether it’s racing, high-end supercars, or making their SUV more efficient, Porsche has it covered. Our focus on the GT3 R Hybrid begins on page 5.

The GT3 R Hybrid: Out On The Edge Text/Photos: Porsche AG
he 911 GT3 R Hybrid has hit the ground running, with one podium to its credit after just two events.
110 years after Ferdinand Porsche developed the world’s first car with hybrid drive, the Lohner Porsche Semper Vivus, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is once again exercising this visionary drive concept in productionbased GT racing. At the Geneva Motor Show this past March, the Porsche 911 GT3 R with innovative hybrid drive made its debut. This opens up a new chapter in the history of Porsche, with more than 20,000 wins in 45 years anchored by the extremely successful Porsche 911. Some Radical Engineering The innovative hybrid technology featured in the car has been developed especially for racing, standing out significantly in its configuration and components from conventional hybrid systems. In this case, electrical front axle drive with two electric motors developing 60 kW each supplements the 480-bhp four-litre flat-six at the rear of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid.
A further significant point is that instead of the usual batteries in a hybrid road car, an electrical flywheel power generator fitted in the interior next to the driver delivers energy to the electric motors.
Step On The Brakes - Create Power The flywheel generator itself is an electric motor with its rotor spinning at speeds of up to 40,000 rpm, storing energy mechanically as rotation energy. The flywheel generator is charged whenever the driver applies the brakes, with the two electric motors reversing their function on the front axle and acting themselves as generators. Then, whenever necessary, that is when accelerating out of a turn or when passing, the driver can tap into extra energy from the charged flywheel generator, the flywheel being slowed down electromagnetically in the generator mode and thus supplying up to

120 kW to the two electric motors at the front from its kinetic energy. This additional power is available to the driver after each charge process for approximately 6 - 8 seconds. Energy formerly converted – and thus wasted – into heat upon every application of the brakes, is now highly efficiently converted into additional drive power. This is essentially the “KERS” system that was utilized by several Formula 1 Teams during the 2009 F1 season.
Depending on racing conditions, hybrid drive is used in this case not only for extra power, but also to save fuel. This increases the efficiency and, accordingly, the performance of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid, for example by reducing the weight of the tank or making pitstops less frequent.
The Racing Laboratory After Geneva the 911 GT3 R Hybrid underwent testing in two long-distance races on the Nürburgring. The highlight of this test program will be the upcoming 24 Hours on the Nordschleife of Nürburgring this May 15th and 16th. The focus is not on the 911 GT3 R Hybrid winning the race, but rather serving as a technological test bed and a “racing laboratory” providing crucial data on the subsequent use of hybrid technology in road-going sports cars.
A Great Start The Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid gave a very promising debut: Porsche works drivers Joerg Bergmeister (Germany), Richard Lietz and the former Porsche Junior Martin Ragginger (both Austria) brought home the white/orange racer to sixth place after a trouble-free race. Continued on Page 8

1966 Jaguar XJ-13 Le Mans All Alloy Replica This is an extraordinary reproduction of the original Jaguar XJ-13 Lemans proto-type. The Monocoque and body were fabricated at Abby Panels, in England who constructed the original car. It is powered by a V-12 cylinder, fuel injected single overhead Cam Jaguar engine, making approximately 400 HP. It has a 5-Speed trans-axel as per the ori ginal .
