The Turbo Issue

Costa Mesa is home to TruSpeed Motorcars, a shop founded by Rob Morgan in 2001. TruSpeed’s focus is pre-owned air-cooled cars. Cars that feature the venerable “901” flat six design, which dates back to the late 50s. The entire spectrum of pre ‘99 rear-engined Porsches enjoys a consistently strong market. The key reason for that sustained strength is their handbuilt nature. These cars were produced by hand vs. modern robotic technology - No two Porsches from this period are precisely alike.

The winter weather in Scottsdale, Arizona, had a severe impact on the auctions that took place this past January. A Freak windstorm devastated the Russo & Steele event destroying many cars. Despite this disastrous turn of events, strong money was spent in Scottsdale. Page 6 has more.

Porsche Cars North America tells us that things are indeed improving in the new car marketplace. The new Panamera has been doing well. The 911 has gained market share in the last half of 2009. Certified Pre-Owned cars are selling well. PCNA is very optimistic this momentum will continue. See page 8 for more details. The Turbo marketplace has a ways to go before it can be considered on a rebound. There are some truly outstanding buys out there right now. The Turbo Pricing table can be found on page 8. Above all... Have fun in your Porsche. Life is too short to drive boring cars.

cottsdale, Arizona is considered by many serious gearheads from around the world to be the beginning of the “Car Season”. No small wonder, as almost all the premier auction houses have high-profile events in Scottsdale during the month of January. Like “Monterey Week” in August, there are a lot of events crammed into the space of a week. One must pick & choose their destinations carefully. For us here at PML, this task is made a little easier by our focus (obsession?) on Porsche. We simply follow the cars from Stuttgart. The chart to the right shows only the “sold” cars, plus a 10% premium to the buyer.

The terrible weather impacted everyone this year - especially the folks at Russo & Steele Auctions, who suffered devasting, freak windstorm damage that destroyed many cars. The Russo & Steele Team was able to persevere with their event after several days of delay. Accurate sales results from Russo & Steele were elusive at press time. We will publish their results in a subsequent issue, once they are available. Despite the low volume, strong money was spent in Scottsdale. The right buyers are out there for the right cars - and one diesel tractor.

Lot 215 1971 Porsche 911 "R/T" Conversion Coupe S/N 9111100323 White/Black Vinyl.. 911R clone car, done to a high standard, from an ordinary "T". Interior backdated to 1967 spec, with sport seats, fire extinguisher, 340 hp twin plug motor. Paint shows reasonably well, but chrome a mix of old and new with some pitting along the light housings and window trim. Unusual retention of A/C with R134 conversion done. This is a fun car for autocrossing and club events and hopefully the new owner puts it through its paces, given the major dollars spent to produce it. Sold at $93,500.00 6

Porsche AG, Stuttgart, have developed a new top-of-the-range sports car for the customer who will only settle for the very best in terms of power, performance and driving dynamics: the 911 Turbo S. The heart of this most exclusive high-performance athlete is of course a six-cylinder boxer boosted by two exhaust gas turbochargers with variable turbine geometry, with an increase in power over the 911 Turbo by 30 to 530 bhp (390 kW). Maximum torque is a most impressive 700 Newton-metres (516 lb-ft). At the same time this new top model comes as standard with all high-tech components available only as options on the “regular” 911 Turbo.

This Gorgeous ‘58 Speedster Brought Real Money At RM: $225,500.00

Lot 220 1957 Porsche Speedster S/N 83712Black/Black/Red/Black top Originally Ruby Red over Black vinyl, this speedster appeared well-maintained, though nothing more than a clean driver, with dull window chrome, "dog dish" hubcaps, squareweave carpet and rubber mats. Paint mostly good, with some chips in the front and overbuffed rear end. This would be a good jumping off point for a restoration, though it's likely the final costs will exceed the value. TLANTA, January 5, 2010 -- Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), importer and distributor of Porsche sports cars, Cayenne SUVs and Panamera Gran Turismos in the United States, today announced December sales in the U.S. of 2,118, essentially on par with the same period last year when it sold 2,154. December’s total was the German automaker’s best monthly retail result of 2009.

For calendar year 2009, Porsche sold a total of 19,696 new cars in the U.S., down 24 percent from 2008 when it sold 26,035.

Sales of Porsche’s newest entry, the 2009 Panamera Gran Turismo, which went on sale in late October, were 521 for the month.

“Less than three months on the market, the new Panamera has enjoyed strong sales growth, and our incoming orders for this model are stronger as we enter 2010,” said PCNA President and CEO, Detlev von Platen. “From an overall standpoint in 2009, while we were down from the previous year we saw considerable improvement on a year-to-year basis during the second half of the year, and our best-selling sports car, the 911, gained market share over its class. We are increasingly optimistic that we can continue this momentum in 2010.” For the month, Porsche’s Approved Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) cars enjoyed sales of 477 versus 339 during the same period in 2008. For the year, CPO total sales for 2009 were 6,582 compared to 6,617 in 2008.

Lot 42 1987 Porsche Slantnose 930S S/N WPOJB0930HS051512 Marine Blue/Tan/blue piping. Nicely maintained turbo flachtblau (flatnose) with little to dislike.
