TRP's 8 new families of LED light engines are designed to be "standard," making them easy to simply drop into a wide variety of existing luminaire designs. Depending on the model, color temperature options range from 2700K to 5000K, most with 83 CRI or better. Offering high lumen output, they are optimized for use with TRP's high-performance LED drivers. Linear 11" and 22" engines are engineered for troffer applications, whether retrofit or new manufacturing. A Narrow 22.7" linear model, perfect for cove, undercabinet and sign lighting applications, can be cut to length. Round 3", 3.7" and 4.7" diameter light engines are available for commercial or residential downlight applications. A square 10.2" Fingerboard design eliminates excess FR4 board, and provides superior light uniformity for surfacemount, recessed or suspended office luminaires. Furthermore, Government agencies like the Ministry for Renewable Energy and the Bureau of Energy Efficiency have been instrumental in raising awareness of LED's benefits in towns and villages, to the extent of even distributing free solar LED lanterns in villages. Numerous municipalities and corporations across the country have adopted LED lighting for street lighting applications. Indian business to government (B2G) LED lighting market is witnessing robust growth. The better efficacy, energy performance, reducing price points have made LED lighting a preferred option over conventional technologies. s New York’s Grand Central Terminal celebrates its 100th anniversary, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Metro-North Railroad decided to create a beautiful lighting design for all travellers and New Yorkers to brighten up their holiday spirit. Partnering with Toshiba, a concept for a light show filling the west windows of the terminalwas created by designer Michiru Tanaka, displaying colored patterns and images during the evening hours. BestekLighting & Staging, Inc, deployed an impressive lighting system in the historical building featuring more than 350 of HARMAN’s Martin Professional lighting fixtures. There were numerous challenges facing Bestek’s team on the project from the start. Not only is Grand Central Terminal a historical, high profile landmark in New York City, but it’s also a very active transportation hub, with 250,000 or more travellers and visitors passing through daily, and more during the holidays. The lighting design had to meet specific security specifications to keep the station safe. In total 354 Martin Professional Stage bar 54s fixtures are deployed on custom rigging, running on 24 full universes of DMX from 5 pm to 11 pm every night through December 26, 2013. “With so many restrictions and requirements listed for this project, we needed to worry less about the physical lighting fixtures and more about the actual programming and installation for a safe and entertaining project,” says Kevin O’Brien, Resident Lighting Designer, Bestek.
OSRAM: New versions of Osram Ostar Projection for projectors
O
sram Opto Semiconductors is now launching two new highpower versions of the Osram Ostar Projection for projectors with a brightness of up to 1700 lumen. They offer very high luminous flux from the available chip surface. Between 1000 and 8300 lumen can be produced depending on the color and the LED version. An antireflex coated glass cover instead of the usual lens, together with external optics, ensures that the light is very well bundled. The new LEDs are therefore ideally matched to the efficient lighting from various additional optics. The two new light emitting diodes offer so much luminous flux that they can be used in office projectors with brightness levels of up to 1700 lumen. At the heart of the product is a 2 mm² LED high-current chip based on state-of-the-art thin-film and UX:3 technologies. The two LED versions contain two (P1W) or four chips (P2W) with a total luminous area of 4 mm² and 8 mm² respectively. In LED projectors three LEDs in the colors red, green and blue serve as the light source. The LEDs are pulsed one after the other (color sequential mode), making the color filter wheel used in classic lamp projectors superfluous. The high output of the new LEDs comes from the latest chip technologies and Osram C² conversion technology for a particularly efficient green. The P2W version emits light pulses with brightnesses of 1000, 2500 and 8300 lumen for Blue, Red and Green. These high brightness levels require current pulses of up to 32 amps (8 amps per chip) and optimized product design to efficiently remove the resulting heat. “To apply this high current the four high-power chips of the P2 are connected in parallel. Only then do the new Ostar Projection LEDs generate their maximum brightness from the chips and turn into real power packs for large imagers”, said Stefan Morgott, responsible for Projector Applications at Osram Opto Semiconductors. “This really opens up the use of LED projectors in offices and classrooms.” Osram Ostar Projection enables light to be routed as efficiently as possible through the optical system which is restricted by the etendue.

It was the first time that Stemac had worked with Colour Sound whose Project Manager Fletch comments, “We really enjoyed this tour. The design was refreshingly different and a lot of fun and Steve and his team were a joy to work with”. The tour included the presentation of the band’s renowned ‘House Party’ show at London’s Alexandra Palace. The focus of attention is a large scenic house onstage – a concept originated by the band’s lead singer Jeremy McKinnon and developed by him and Stemac in 2013. The show opens with a video intro onto a drape completely covering the stage, which is jettisoned by electric kabuki to reveal the house, the band and a hugely energetic full-on rock-out set. The house is 24ft high and so a mid-stage truss provides some of the key lighting positions for the show which also happen to be directly above the substantial amount of pyro utilized in the show. Stemac decided to go with Robe’s LEDWash 1200s which he’s used before and thought would be a robust choice! This plan has worked so far and so Colour Sound supplied 14 of them. “They give the fire-power I need, they are fast, have a good zoom and I can get a nice white out of them,” he comments. They ensure plenty of in-the-face punctuation for the band’s hyperactive set, replete with staccato verses and choruses and dramatic breakdowns. Also on the mid truss were eight Martin Atomic strobes. These were pointed vertically downwards to boost the effect on the house. “It is a case of less eye candy / punishment and more focus on the set piece!” explains Stemac. The downstage key lighting was all achieved using 12 x Vari*Lite VLXs - “Another great fixture”. Although he’d initially wanted to go with another arc lightsource, he found having all LED wash lighting creates a more seamless look and offers extremely fast colour matching.

Newsline Direct-type LED TV Penetration Rate surpasses 60% in 2014
S
purred by Chinese TV manufacturers’ demands, LED TV penetration rates reached 95% in 2013, according to LEDinside, a subsidiary of global research institute TrendForce. The organization estimates LED TV will completely replace CCFL by 2014, and annual LED TV shipment volume will grow at YOY 3% to 209 million. However, LED for backlight TV applications market value is expected to decrease 17% to US$ 2.41 billion. The main cause behind LED TVs growing shipment volume, but lower market value has been direct-type LED TVs reduced usage of LEDs and its high penetration rate of more than 60% in 2014. Compared to edge-type LED TVs, direct-type LED TVs only uses half the number of LEDs. For LED manufacturers, 2014 will be a price competitive year, said Jack Kuo, Assistant Manager, LEDinside. Even if LED TV penetration rates reach 100%, the TV industry’s price and cost competition has shown no signs of easing. TV brands are no longer focused on LED costs, but paying more attention to costs of the entire LED light bar cost, including PCB and lens costs. Hence, companies that want to enter the 2014 LED TV backlight supply chain must be cost competitive as well as provide comprehensive LED TV backlight solutions. Direct-type LED TV has become one of the mainstream TVs in 2013. LED manufacturers are also using secondary optic lens to widen viewing angle. The lens can widen viewing angle to 165 degrees and improve direct-type LED TVs flaw of being much thicker. Accompanying directtype LED TVs lowered costs and successful slim down, the TV model is expected to become TV manufacturers’ highlighted product in 2014. LEDinside estimates, direct-type LED TV penetration rates will reach 60% and surpass edge-type LED TV for the first time. Due to TV industry’s intense cost competition, there are signs that LED for TV backlight application specs are integrating. For example, edge-type LED TV mostly uses 7030 LED, ultra slim bezel’s 7020 LED, and for direct-type LED TV types 3528

icato a leading developer of superior light quality from LED modules, announced that it has relocated its San Jose headquarters to accommodate a new manufacturing line for the company's next generation of products. The new 24,000 sq ft space is more than double the size of Xicato's previous San Jose facility. The company has invested millions of dollars in equipment and resources to meet the increasing global demand for its LED modules. "Investment in our U.S. operations enables Xicato to rapidly develop and introduce innovative technologies and products for the global lighting industry and starting next month we will transition to full manufacturing mode," said Menko de Roos, CEO of Xicato. "Our move timeframe was very short, and it was critical that the build-out and permitting went smoothly and matched our equipment arrival schedule. The City of San Jose's appointment-based permitting process worked well, to meet critical milestones and get our operations up and running." Xicato's new space includes areas for manufacturing, research and development labs and testing facilities for its LED modules. Class 100K cleanroom space is dedicated to a new manufacturing line; expanded reliability testing labs ensure product longevity and quality. Xicato's focus continues to be the delivery of quality light. The new manufacturing facility allows Xicato's next generation of products to offer significantly improved efficiency to reduce energy use and costs, lowers the cost of Xicato's modules and ushers in a new era of intelligent lighting - Lighting 2.0. GlacialLight expands to 8” AC and DC Input Surface Mounted Down Lights

lacialLight, a division of the Taiwanese technology manufacturer GlacialTech Inc., has added three 8” AC and DC input surface mounted down light series to its interior lighting range: an AC input non-dimmable series – GL-DL08SM, an AC input 3-in-1 (1-10V / PWM / resistor) dimmable series – GL-DL08DA-SM, and a DC input non-dimmable series – GL-DL08LD-SM. Featuring minimum color rendering indexes (CRIs) of 80, these highly practical surface mounted down light series are ideal for indoor spaces where there is not sufficient room to install recessed lighting. These down lights are one piece, can be mounted on nearly any surface –including concrete ceilings – and require no additional holes to be drilled, making them versatile and easy to install. And since they are made of sleek die-cast aluminum, they are also lightweight and durable. Each series is available in three color temperatures to suit their application's requirements: the WW (warm white) version with a color temperature of 3000K, the NW (neutral white) version with a color temperature of 4000K, and the CW (cool white) version with a color temperature of 5700K. An optional metal rod mount is also available, which turns these down lights into pendant lights. Pendant lights provide a warm ambient glow, and are often used in multiples and hung in a straight line over countertops. GlacialLight will be releasing 4”, 6” and 10” models of each series in the near future. With environmental protection in mind, GlacialLight has designed the GL-DL08-SM, GL-DL08DA-SM, and GL-DL08LD-SM series to be RoHS compliant. o make the case of Glasses Free 3D Displays in public areas viable, the size and quality of displays are critical. A recent Glasses Free 3D Display introduced by Atech Korea Co Ltd. measures up to 500 inches. These video display walls are intended to be used in indoor public areas, such as shopping mall and exhibition hall. With a contrast ratio of 4000:1 and screen brightness at 4,500 cd/m2, the viewing distance can be up to 30 meters. displays are in fact LCD displays with backlit LEDs or edgelit LEDs. With this backlit or edge-lit technology, the size of displays is constrained by the size of LCD panels. However, with the recent work of Atech, using Osram’s Multi Chipled to produce a truly 3D LED display, the size barrier is overcome. The LEDs emit light directly and operate as individual pixels with a “Lenticular Lens” developed by Atech to create High Definition (HD) 3D images. “We have chosen Osram’s Multi Chipled LEDs because the RGB chips in these LEDs can be driven individually to mix any color required thereby producing extremely accurate pixel colors for vivid images, and also the product has a black surface with diffused resin to provide highest contrast possible in our screens,” said Seokhwa Kim, president of Atech Korea. “They also come in a tiny 1.6 × 1.6 × 0.9 mm package, making it possible to have a pixel spacing of only 2 mm. In effect, millions of pixels can be accommodated in an area of less than 10 m², sufficient to display pictures in resolution of 1980 x 1080 HDTV with brilliant colors and excellent contrast.” “Our Multi Chipled series come in an ultra black package that hardly reflects any ambient light at all and the high image quality is maintained even in very bright environment,” said Kai-Chong Cheng, Senior Marketing Director APAC of Osram Opto Semiconductors.

Global LED Outdoor Lighting Market enters maturation phase
O
utdoor lighting construction and maintenance costs have gradually increased over the years in city public lighting expenditures. Affected by the global economic downturn, there has been rising number of city bankruptcies. In turn, city management are increasingly valuing sustainable development. City managers are creating suitable living environment that uses low investment and maintenance costs and can be met on a limited budget. As LED streetlight solutions mature, city governments have proven from early pilot projects that LED luminaires are energy efficient, environmental friendly and have long lifetime. LED streetlight prices have also dropped to prices close to conventional luminaires. From manufacturers’ exponential shipment growth statistics, and concentrated release of city government bid contracts, LEDinside believes LED outdoor lighting has moved from the development phase to a mature market. In the next few years LED outdoor lighting shipment volume and market size growth will soar on a YoY basis. By the end of 2013, more than 600 U.S. cities have planned to install LED streetlights. For instance, there will be 142,000 LED streetlights installed in Los Angeles, 41,000 in Seattle, 40,000 in Las Vegas, and 32,000 in Boston. New York is also planning to replace 250,000 streetlights with LEDs by 2017, which is to be followed by the replacement of decorative lights in urban commercial areas. In addition, most areas in Canada are also actively implementing LED streetlight installation programs or incentives. The North American outdoor lighting market is maturing as more manufacturers enter the market. Manufacturers’ competitive strategies mainly include providing high cost performance products, paying more attention to environmental factors, and satisfying professionally high-end demands. For example, Cree launched 100W LED streetlight priced at US$ 99 to meet low-budget council’s installation demands. In addition, consumer demands are switching from halogen and incandescent lamps to LED lights that are more energy-saving and have long-lifetimes.
Robe Sponsers TPi Awards 2014 with its ROBIN range

obe once again sponsored the annual TPi Awards with the supply of over 300 moving lights for the 2014 event. Produced by TPi magazine and Mondiale Publishing and staged at the Novotel West London in Hammersmith, the event honours the technical and creative achievements of the live production / event industry over the preceding twelve months. The lighting equipment included 32 x Pointes, 82 x CycFX 8s, 28 x MiniMes, 90 x LEDBeam 100s, 44 x LEDWash 600s, 20 x DLF Washes, 8 x DLS Spots and 28 x MMX Spots, all from Robe’s ROBIN range. The stylish and appropriate lighting for the gala dinner, attended by over 1000 industry professionals and presented by Fun Lovin’ Criminal’s front man Huey Morgan, was designed primarily by Nick Valdez from rental company Siyan. Working alongside Nick, LD James Scott, of Times Design, programmed and operated on the night. The 300 plus moving lights were supplied by Robe and rigged by Siyan. The lighting design was based around six trusses traversing the room and two trusses – front and back – flown above the stage. Three further trusses, positioned along the back wall, picked up the main LED screens Robe CycFX8 LED Batons were employed to up and downlight the voile lined walls. Ten units were rigged on each of the three video trusses, six were positioned on the floor to cover the caterer’s access and the remainder were spread around the perimeter of the room to up-light the voile drops. The diminutive LEDBeam 100s were used primarily to illuminate the tables throughout the two rooms. The two real challenges being the lack of trim height in some of the areas, and keeping the LEDBeams – normally used for their piercingly bright beams - at the right intensity to maintain the overall ambience whilst lighting the dining areas sufficiently for the guests to see their food. ”I think we’ve discovered a far more flexible modern replacement for the traditional pin-spot,” comments Scott.

Lighting Design International were asked by the leading stone specialists, Lapicida, to design a lighting scheme to show off to best effect their new flagship 5,000 sq ft showroom in the heart of the Chelsea design district. From the bones of a dramatic industrial building, Lapicida has created a total environment in stone; on walls, on floors, on ceilings; as cladding, as architectural elements and as one-off works of art.

DI’s scheme was designed to use solely the latest energy efficient LED technology to highlight the stone at minimum energy costs. The design brief was to display the stone to maximise its properties and develop individual schemes within differing areas that would show the end user what the stone would look like in the home. With its ground floor entrance to this first floor showroom, it was important to entice the visitor up to the main area above. Lighting dramatically transforms what would otherwise have been a dark staircase, and visually leads you up the stairs making one want to explore the space beyond. Each room set is treated as a room within a home with presets that can show how within the space the stone transforms as the mood changes. In addition an extra layer
of light has been introduced so that when on full, the true brightness can be used by the sales representative to help sell the product. To increase energy efficiency further LDI designed each room with lights set at a low level and used a PIR detector (Presence Infra-Red) to bring the lighting up automatically as the client enters the space. This also adds to the drama within each area. The main showroom has dramatic lighting set to either uplight every other stone panel or wash the ones in between from above. The technique selected depended on the stone and the properties that needed to be accentuated. For added drama there is a ‘Dark Zone’ walk through to display textured and backlit stone. Shafts of
light were positioned close to the stone to maximize the effect. The success of the Lighting Design International’s scheme for this showroom is not only that it is lit entirely by LED, but showcases stone in all its glory across a wide range of styles, texture and design. ournemouth Council, in collaboration with Bournemouth Coastal BID appointed Michael Grubb Studio to illuminate Bournemouth Pier. This one off event, arranged on the 7th October 2013, was designed
to celebrate the launch of the Golden Ticket experience. The Studio provided lighting designs that ensured that the Pier’s key architectural components were revealed and enhanced when lit. Over half a mile of cabling was used along with various
LED lighting technologies to achieve the desired lit effect. The biggest challenge was the weather and the tide - fortunately Mother Nature was kind to the team and the Michael Grubb Studio lighting designers were able to successfully light up the pier.

Gardens of Light, Bournemouth
T
he festive period saw Bournemouth’s lower gardens lit up by a series of emphatic lighting displays from Michael Grubb Studio. The Gardens of Light Festival 2013 was a new major event to boost Bournemouth’s winter tourism appeal. From the iconic balloon to the meandering river and surrouding trees, the project utilised each dynamic of the lower gardens for an all-encompassing experience. The main attractions of the festival were the 10 LightPods, scattered along the paths linking Bournemouth Town Centre to the beachfront. Using the structures of traditional beach huts, the lighthouses used quirky interiors with innovative lighting designs to create optical illusions.w

obert Stephenson’s Boiler House in Newcastle was the location for the INSIDEOUT project. Temporary lighting was hidden within the various architectural components of the building. A camera was then positioned (and not moved for 2 days) whilst a series of lighting effects were configured and activated over a period of time. The final result demonstrates the power of light and how it can be used to transform any given space. The final images are 100% genuine and have not be adjusted in anyway.

Lost Light, Arts by the Sea Festival
I
n September 2013, Arts Bournemouth appointed Michael Grubb Studio to develop Lost Light as a part of the Arts by the Sea Festival. This light art project, comprised of five interactive lighting experiences, was to be an integral part of the town’s weekend of music, performance and art. As specialist lighting designers Michael Grubb Studio combined architecture, materials, sound, video and light to create immersive light experiences. The designs used traditional beach huts fitted with an interior of diverse concepts to create the ‘Light-Pods’ – concepts that explored the potential of light in sculpting and defining an atmosphere within a space. Situated throughout the Lower Gardens and along the beach, the huts formed an intriguing spectacle.

Tasting Rooms, Guinness Storehouse
D
esigned in collaboration with architectural foodsmiths/jelly mongers Bompas & Parr, the Tasting Rooms at the Guinness Experience, Dublin, present an experiential journey through a sequence of dramatically lit spaces, to heighten all the senses ahead of sampling Guinness. Each sequential room contradicts the last with its lighting, sound and ‘smell-scape’. Michael Grubb Studio’s scheme deliberately up-ends conventional lighting design practice, creating sharp changes in light level rather than gentle transitions. Lighting is being used as part of the brand story throughout the seven-storey Guinness Experience at St. James’s Gate Brewery, which is Ireland’s most visited tourist attraction. Despite its over-the-top drama, the lighting scheme is energy efficient, mixing dark and light.

Pawtucket River Bridge Most great architecture begins with a simple idea. The best architecture maintains that simplicity and, through collaboration, achieves strength of presence that speaks to more than a single project. With strong lines and an art deco theme, the Pawtucket River Bridge echoes the history of the city as the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution. By establishing the bridge’s nighttime presence with simple lines and elevating accents, the lighting design reinforces the structure’s strong daytime presence while giving the residents of Pawtucket an iconic evening gateway that forever links their historic past to their rising future.
The resulting look of the bridge at night has been described as “bold” and “dynamic”. The illuminated bridge enhances the pedestrian waterfront and will serve as a focal point when new amenities, such as a bike path and community park, come to completion.

ndustrial Americans call the place where trails meet to cross a river Pawtucket. During the 18th Century settlers crossed the Pawtucket River seeking religious freedom in Rhode Island Colony. During the 19th century, Pawtucket’s Slater’s Mill marked the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution and the bridge spanning the river became a commercial thoroughfare. By the mid-20th century, Interstate 95 was the most travelled highway in the nation. In 1958 a new Pawtucket

River Bridge was built to carry I-95 traffic over the Pawtucket River. According to the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, 162,000 vehicles travel across the Pawtucket River Bridge every day. The defective Route 95 overpass created an opportunity to demonstrate that State and Federal governments could collaborate with the design team to replace the aging Pawtucket River Bridge No. 550 and revitalize the historic city’s gateway.

The Pawtucket River Bridge speaks with the “humble aura of strength and understated refinement� that has so long defined the city and its people.

The design process focused heavily on community contribution. The final structure references Art Deco architectural stylings found in local buildings and expresses strength and permanence in the simple lines and angles of its open-spandrel deck arch structure.
This final conceptual rendering expressed the core design intent; to tastefully reflect the architecture of the bridge while allowing a place for colorized LED lighting technologies, providing flexibility in the bridge’s nighttime character.

The design challenge was not to create a linkage over a relatively narrow New England waterway but to convey the series of extraordinary events that for centuries converged at this very spot. From hand-hewn covered bridges to steel and concrete marvels, Rhode Islanders have long expressed pride in bridges and regard them as iconic structures. The project entailed replacing three separate structures with a bridge to carry I-95 Northbound; a bridge to carry I-95 Southbound; and a bridge for the on and off ramps to George and School Streets. Inspiration for the bridge’s Art Deco design came from other structures in Pawtucket built during the Great Depression, such as City Hall, McCoy Stadium and Shea High School. The new bridge’s four pillars feature representations of Art Deco wings on the eagles chiseled atop the tower at City Hall. Seen from the river, the bridge, made of metalized steel and illuminated at night with colored LED (light-emitting diode) lighting, displays a graceful silvery arch over the Pawtucket River. The project cost $80 million and was completed in 2013.

ighting designer Massimo Tomasino added his own touches of magic and spectacle to the various high energy performances with 24 x Robe ROBIN Pointes and 24 x Robe ROBIN 600 LEDWashes. Some of the best international circus acts in the world were presented by Liana Orfei in the show produced by Golden Production Srl to thousands of delighted circus fans as the event celebrated its 30th season. Tomasino takes up the story, "I chose to combine these two excellent Robe products because I knew their potential was exactly what I needed”. He’s used LEDWash 600s many times before on tours, concerts and musicals, however it was his first time incorporating Robe’s new multi-purpose Pointe fixture into his art. Tomasino reckons that Robe products generally have “Everything a lighting designer requires for a great variety of work. I have used them on so many different genres of performance, and always had good results," he declares. With a sophisticated but clear and well defined lighting design, Tomasino kept the Golden International Festival action highlighted and right at the centre of everyone’s attention, in the process creating a completely new lighting concept from anything previously seen in ‘typical’ circus shows by positioning most of the lights at floor level. Around the perimeter of the ring were 14 x Pointes and 14 x LEDWash 600s which were used to reveal the acts and add extra drama to their shows. This was a careful operation as neither performers or the audience, who were in very close proximity, could have any light spillage into their eyes.
Another five LEDWash 600s and the 10 x Pointes were up in the air on trussing for high backlighting effects, with the remaining five LEDWash 600s rigged on the front truss and generally washed the whole performance space. The 14 x LEDWashes on the floor filled the entire space with colour and panache. They were used for a plethora of effects – fast and slow movements and other fabulous looks to accompany the various acrobatic routines and crowd enthralling antics. The 14 LEDWashes around the ring were used for general scenesetting functions and also as ‘practicals’. Tomasino really appreciated the sheer power of the LEDWash 600s and the ability to switch quickly between strong and intense saturated colours to the various colour temperature whites of 3,200 K or 5,600K. The 14 Pointes on the floor were "extremely powerful and versatile” and used to bring a special threedimensionality to the space. "Specifically I used the gobos, directing them upwards with minimum zoom; and the results were spectacular: a column of lights ‘wrapping’ around a circular space changing colour and shape”.
The Pointes used for the high level backlighting ensured there was a different background for every performance! "I love working with Robe," enthuses Tomasino. In addition to the great creativity offered by the fixtures, he likes their near silent operation. This was a determining factor in the choice of the lights for The Golden International Circus Festival because most fixtures were close in proximity to the public, so it was essential that they were not distracting! Tomasino confirms he will definitely be using the Pointe again in his work, describing the fixtures as a "must-have” for using as a wash, spot or beam or for effects. The lighting system was programmed and run day-to-day by Claudiu Dinca, and all the Robe fixtures were supplied to the Festival by rental company N.I.T. Rome. The festival’s promoter was Paolo Prestipino, Liana Orfei was the curator and Artistic Director, and the run of shows included a special TV recording which was directed by Luca Landi and broadcast on Sky. The business center features two part, two tone chandeliers with matching table lamps and complementary wall mounted lamps
elements.� Bloom Lighting Group created the custom lighting that features throughout the re-designed areas, including a center piece decorative chandelier in the lobby. The chandelier has a vertical polished chrome center pole supporting protruding spoke like arms of various lengths. Each arm has two G4-LED, 3 watt lamps with a chrome metal tube base and a white frosted glass diffuser. Hanging from a steel cable and polished chrome metal canopy, it measures 1 meter high by 1.3 meters in diameter at its widest point. Five decorative pendants hang above the reception desk. Each has a tubular glass shade that is clear at the top and bottom, and frosted around the middle. They have a polished chrome canopy and stem, and each holds one E12, 40 watt lamp. Adjacent to the lobby is a lounge area and a short corridor leading to the elevators and business center. Both areas have wall mounted lamps with ivory trim and white acrylic diffusers. They are

mounted with a polished chrome metal stem and back plate connected by a walnut wood frame. Each lamp has one 23 watt dimmable fluorescent bulb. In the lounge area, the center pieces are two large chandeliers with cylindrical, two part fabric shades. The larger outer shade is dark brown and overhangs the smaller ivory colored inner tier shade extending from below. The shade is finished off with a cream acrylic diffuser at the bottom and a white acrylic diffuser on top. The fixture has four 3500K, dimmable 23 watt CFL lamps. In the corridor, the same dark and ivory shade combination is used, but this time in a prominent rectangular form. Measuring nearly three and a half meters in length the shade encompasses eighteen E26 23 watt dimmable CFL light sources. The same rectangular shade is used in the dining area with longer polished chrome finished stems. It is mounted above the breakfast serving space and wine rack to draw attention
to that part of the space. And over the bar, there are more tubular glass shaded pendants like those above the reception desk. Finally, in the business center the cylindrical two part shades from the lounge area are replicated and complemented with wall mounted lights exactly like those in the lounge area and corridor. This space is finished off with two table lamps with the same style of shade as the chandelier. The table lamps have an E26 23 watt lamp mounted on a polished chrome metal stem, encased in a clear glass tube and sitting on a polished chrome base. With the renovated interior including custom lighting, the new space has been re-designed to combine a welcoming Courtyard style with a contemporary twist. ALTLED BR40 Featured in Timber Design Awards Winner – Candlebark School Library
W
inner of the Australian Ti m b e r Design Awards, Candlebark School Library is an earth-covered library built into the side of a hill in Victoria's Macedon Ranges. Architect Paul Haar, a self-employed and sole-practicing architect based in Melbourne, was the designer of this building. His business focus has been on environmentally sustainable design and the revitalization of a community-based housing culture with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in remote parts of northern Australia. When asked what he likes best about his job, Haar answered, “I love the creative pursuit attached to architecture. Since my uni days in the late 1970s, I’ve held a passion for and focus on building environmentally and socially sustainable futures.” (Architecture & Design). Therefore it was Haar’s goal to use materials that are environmentally friendly, recyclable, and sustainable for Candlebark School Library. ALTLED® is proud to be part of this environmentally-
conscious architectural design. ALTLED’s mission is to create efficient lighting solutions that are green and sustainable, which aligns with Haar’s designing beliefs. This is the prime reason he chose ALTLED products. The specific lights used in Candlebark School Library are BR40 35W Natural white (4000K), created by ALTLED using state of the art LED chip on board light sources supplied by one of the top five chip suppliers. ALTLED’s revolutionary and patented heat sink Glacier Edge is made of pure aluminum fins—106 pieces for BR40. The aluminum fins give greater heat dissipation and offer simple sophistication – a combination of function, environmental awareness and style – allowing it to be used in a tremendous variety of indoor applications. The fins come in both gold and silver finish, but silver was chosen for this particular project. Much like a sunflower facing downwards, ALTLED Asteria BR40 is designed based on the traditional BR40 but with a much more modern and aesthetic appearance. Although typically used with luminaire, the
intricate aluminum fins and sleek rounded shape allow it to be used on its own without a light fixture. This was another major feature that prompted Haar’s decision for ALTLED’s BR40. He was looking for a lamp that holds its own aesthetically and could be simply mounted in an Edison Screw pendant holder. Combined with Bridgelux’s LED chipsets and ALTLED’s trademarked heat sink, performance benchmark for BR lights has been raised even higher. The outcome for the overall design of Candlebark School Library resulted in winning the 2012 Timber Design Award. ALTLED’s retrofit BR40 undoubtedly played an important role in the project as it ties everything together in terms of design concept and look for a green and sustainable architecture.

Hotel Technology Lighting lobby, they will experience the immediate ‘grandeur’ atmosphere which encapsulates the Grand Hyatt hotel. In the lobby, layers of light are positioned intelligently throughout the space with background ambient levels softly lifting the ceiling line or gently grazing a wall / column face; complimented with strong punches of down lights either pooling the floor or to accentuate the surrounding sculptures and artwork. The public areas all have an automated time clock scene setting arrangement. These preset scenes will gradually change to reflect the service and the time of day for each area. The guestrooms use a room control unit giving a switching arrangement in the standard rooms and scene setting within the suite rooms. The bedroom corridor and lift lobby are the only spaces which have no control (apart from on / off to enable a floor to be shutdown) and use entirely LED lighting due to the corridors having no natural daylight penetration, for the rest of the hotel we use energy saving iridium coated tungsten halogen lamps and LED (2700k) within the coves, some decorative lighting (the glass cube collections) use LED lamp with a cooler white (3200k) lamp sources to give contrast and highlight, the rest of the decorative use the halogen mains lamp. In the ballroom, conventional and remote adjustable spots, utilizing beam optics ranging from 8° to 36°, are carefully designed to be seated into the complex ceiling trough layout to provide various lighting effect to suit different event. LED strips with 2700K colour temperature are integrated into picture frames and door frames to accentuate the artworks and doors. Every space has its own language and identification which is held together by a common theme, drawing back to the initial brief of warmth and elegance.

Simon Berry, Illuminate Lighting Design, Partner, Simon started his career designing, tendering and site supervising exterior lighting installations for local government, during this time he gained his qualification of a Higher National Diploma in Electrical Engineering. Having an engineering Simon Berry background proved a useful foundation for his transition into architectural lighting. Since then he has worked for some of London’s leading lighting consultancies such as Isometrix, Into, and Light Bureau (formerly Indigo) enabling him to meet designers and artists such as Christian Liaigre, Ian Shrager, Damien Hirst to name but a few. Whilst working in London he identified an opportunity for an independent lighting design practice to service the growing Irish market and created Chimera. During this time he established a working relationship with HBA resulting in his relocation to Singapore and the creation of illuminate. This collaboration achieves an enhanced level of co-ordination between the interior designer, artwork consultant and lighting designer, resulting in a greater level of creativity between the specialist fields. Illuminate now has over twenty members of staff split across 6 strategically located offices which means illuminate can offer a tailored team to suit any project type. The development of design started with the main wooden-storefront, which was experimented with paper strips, that in a figurative way evokes the S from the brand. The soft shapes and the gray color predominates into the space with the main intention of offering the user a light and cozy space. About this, the selection of materials comes, the warm ones, that let us take the fluency and style, and the stones and glass giving spatial balance. All the stores have a spatial duality, the wooden combination with light tones, and the dark tones with stony floors, this because the dichotomy between woman's and men's sections. The design over the stores goes from the small scale to the detail, everything belongs to design. Every furniture are designed store to store, there's nothing repeated to each other. The level of detail decreases, even the pieces that support the glass, were designed and manufactured by the company involved in aluminum and structures specially for each of the stores. so specific, the lighting is such a very important matter. There's a spatial quality based on the tone and the amount of lighting. Talking about one of SHINE's premises, the sustainability, inside spaces already built and restricted, we tried to take as far as we can on every store, the efficiency and the saving in every aspect. The stores are designed inside a low scheme of circle of life stablished, during this, the furniture and shelves are removable and adjustable into a different conditions. The 80% of the materials are reusable.

Reiz Electrocontrols Pvt Ltd got into the lighting business in 1987. It has state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities at plants in Gurgaon and Manesar spread over 60,000 sq ft. They make only energy saving, fire retardant and intelligent LED luminaires in an extensive range, procuring LEDs from CREE and NICHIA and design and manufacture every single part in-house. They put a 5-year warranty on every single product that leaves their factory. They do not just do coveted projects, but also do business with dealers and manufacture products for top international companies like IKEA, Bajaj and Osram. The company has many certifications to their credit and their products are tested at ERDA.

Interview What is your perception about the changing trends of the LED world? In our view, the most important trends that we see in our industry are: •• LED has become the most preferred choice because of the universal approval of LED lighting for most green field projects, where technical people are the decision makers. •• People are now looking at LED lighting ‘brands’ and approaching them not as commodities. The period of cheap LED lighting is now coming to an end and people are looking at better quality and aesthetics. •• Apart from hotels & retail which were the early adopters, it is now the builders and the residential sector which is opening up. For example, DLF and Experion are now using only LEDs for their projects. These are the mega trends that we see in the industry today. Share with us your experience while developing controlling gear for lighting consistently for 25 years? REIZ has been developing electronic control gear for energy efficient luminaires since 1988, and over the years, we have been enhancing our control gear to meet all of the European Norms like EN62384, EN 61547, EN 61347, EN 55015. In spite of this we have upgraded our LED drivers for much higher surge voltages than the EN norm of 1.5kv, to withstand up to 3 kv for indoor and 4 kv for outdoor, which are endemic to the Indian power scenario. REIZ control gear can typically withstand 340 vac for 2 hours continuous, and this feature is also developed over years of experience in dealing with the vagaries of the Indian power and poor wiring practices. Under voltage lockout feature is also very useful when the LED drivers go to smaller towns where low voltage is a perennial problem.
Could you share with us about the latest technologies that you use to manufacture and maintain your products at your plants in Gurgaon and Manesar? REIZ LED modules and drivers are made at the Gurgaon factory using the latest automatic robotic pick and place machines, microprocessor controlled reflow ovens, high precision lead free wave soldering machines, robotic dispensing arms, meter mix and dispense machines etc. REIZ luminaires are finally made at our Manesar plant using the latest CNC turning centers for machining, pneumatic presses, mass vibratory finishing machines, band saws and shears etc. MIG and TIG welding machines weld aluminum and SS to precision. Could you elaborate upon LED Luminaries technology? At REIZ, we believe in delivering intelligent lighting solutions – energy efficient, safe, maintenance-free and durable luminaires. And, this is enshrined in our vision. All of REIZ luminaires are LED based and RoHS compatible, mercury-free which ensures that we care deeply about the environment and we X-ray screen every component that comes into the factory for hazardous substances. REIZ drivers have an efficiency >90%, REIZ luminaires have optical efficiencies in excess of 92%, world class thermal management technology >3W/mK contributing to an efficiency of 100lm/watt in office luminaires. All of this ensures that REIZ LED luminaires are on a permanent LowCal electricity diet. Any office environment should be bright, cheerful and evenly lit. Studies by Osram have shown that productivity can increase by as much as 30% in an environment which is properly lit.
In today’s work environment, there is a lot of computer work. LED down lights with their opal diffusers let out lighting in a soft evenly distributed manner that eliminates unwanted reflections and glare from screens/monitors. It is in this context that REIZ has developed a whole range of LED lighting solutions that can provide a total luminous efficacy of > 90 lm/watt which is typically double that of CFL down lights. REIZ down lights like Trapeze, Smooth Mega, Lunia series, Rapier etc are all designed specifically for this purpose. Internationally, offices are using customizable range of color and intensity lighting for their interiors. Fraun Hofer Gesellschaft - Europe’s biggest application oriented research organization has conducted a number of tests and simulations to conclusively prove that ability to choose the color and intensity can improve work output v/s a fixed light source. REIZ also offers tunable white luminaires to enable this. Could you detail on the wide range of the LED luminaries product range that your company has? At REIZ, we believe that every space needs specific lighting solutions. It is to this end that we have developed the most extensive range of luminaires (over 500) to satisfy every lighting need. Interview Could you explain us what all activities are you responsible as a Technical Director? At REIZ,I am responsible for directing our two design teams – the electronic design team, designs led modules and led drivers at our Udyog Vihar factory. The manesar design team designs the LED luminaires using the latest software from Siemens – Solid edge. Our Manesar team is responsible for mechanical, thermal and optical design of LED luminaires and they have a state of art optical Gonio photometer and Spectro photometer laboratory to validate all optical readings. To which countries do you export the LED luminaries? And what further plans do you have for geographical expansion? REIZ has been exporting to Australia, Dubai, Kuwait, Sri Lanka, Maldives,
Mauritius, Nepal, Europe, REIZ has been participating at the world famous lighting fair, LIGHT PLUS BUILD at Frankfurt. Would you share highlights about the major projects that have been accomplished? REIZ designs manufactures and sells LED lighting solutions to world class projects and also is a ODM supplier to Osram, Wipro, Bajaj and Ikea and is looking to expand our OEM and ODM
business with some of the world leading lighting distribution companies. We aim to be a world class supplier of LED luminaires to the best companies of the world. Ever since the LED prices have been crashing over the years, we see more and more usage of LED luminaires over other traditional forms of lighting. As I have mentioned before, it is not only the early adopters but the masses that are now going in for LED lighting. The changeover is happening at a really fast pace, as we speak. The concept of not changing a lamp for a decade or more is really catching on. In fact the non LED lamp source factories of the world are closing down fast. Basically, the way things are rolling, everything but the sun is going to be lit by LED.

he Taipei International Lighting Show (TILS) is set to get bigger this year, with over 1,000 booths from 420 exhibitors at the Taipei World Trade Center, Nangang Exhibition Hall ((TWTC Nangang) on March 20 to 23, 2014. One of the world's top lighting exhibitions is expected to attract more than 1,300 overseas visitors and 18,000 local Taiwanese visitors. With the smart grid and decentralised power supply into 2020 Light + Building 2014 presents market-ready technologies for energyoptimised buildings and districts
M
ajor cities such as Berlin are ‘energy guzzlers’ and responsible for around 80 percent of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. Hence, it is particularly important that energy consumption be stemmed there. To this end, Berlin is particularly creative and pioneering and has come up with a number of ambitious ideas. One of them is the ‘Energy Strategy Berlin Adlershof 2020’ at the renowned Adlershof Science and Technology Centre in the southeast of the city. Together with partners from research and business, the operators want to increase the energy efficiency of the site through the use of innovative technologies. The aim is to cut the consumption of primary energy at Adlershof by 30 percent by 2020. A challenging target because the project encompasses 450 buildings in different states of repair, over 900 companies, 16 scientific institutions
and 23,000 people who not only research, study and produce but also live there. And: Adlershof continues to grow! Adlershof is Europe’s biggest inner-city development area. On an area of 467 hectares where Otto Lilienthal took off for his first powered flight and the GDR Academy of Sciences was to be found until 1989, there is a mixture of modernised precast-concrete buildings, protected and decaying buildings, awardwinning glass architecture, futuristic biotechnology, photovoltaic, optics, information-technology and microsystem-technology research laboratories, as well as the modern lecture theatres of the Humboldt University. Over the years until 2020, a new ‘Campus Residential Area’ will be built on 14 hectares of the area. Dr Beate Mekiffer of WISTA Management, the operating company, is in charge of the entire energy project: “The demand for primary
energy is expected to rise from 360 at present to around 825 gigawatt hours if no action is taken to stop this development. In other words, the situation is extremely urgent!” The German government is also aware of the problem and is sponsoring ‘Energy Strategy Berlin Adlershof 2020’, a cluster project that is unparalleled anywhere in Germany. At Adlershof, the focus is on building efficiency and intelligent electricity grids on both existing and new developments, which does not make things any easier. On the contrary, it means unifying both existing and new exhibitors. According to the analysis, the energy consumed by the lighting would be almost halved if just the lighting systems at Adlershof were to be modernised. Therefore, motion detectors with electronic sensors will be used to manage the lighting in future. Additionally, dimmers will be fitted so the brightness of the interior lighting can be controlled intelligently in accordance with the time of day. Particular attention is being paid to the construction of the planned ‘Campus Residential Area’. Around 100 of the 1,300 apartments are to be built in a plus-energy estate where more energy will be generated than used. At Light + Building from March 30 to April 4, 2014 - around 2,300 international manufacturers will show their latest products and innovations for the fields of lighting, electrical engineering, house and building automation and software for the building industry.

Interview for a couple of years now, customised LED lighting market is still at a very early stage. The future is very bright because apart from saving 60-75 % of the power we consume by using LED Lighting, the architects, interior designers, builders and consultants can now enhance the way the fixture looks, apart from customizing it to their requirements by changing the colour temperature, using various lens, body colours and finishes etc. They now like to show the fixtures rather than hiding it or camouflaging it like older times when using traditional lighting fixtures. Could you share the product range and under what standards and certification are they maintained? We have various types of LED fixtures for both indoor and outdoor usage such as LED Downlights, under water lights, outdoor LED lighting, LED strips, commercial lights, façade lighting etc, but as mentioned they are all customized to the clients / architects needs. LEDs used by us are big Brands from America, Europe and Taiwan that are certified mainly by CE apart from their own factory standards which basically conform to industry standards. We put a lot of R&D in our products to enhance the life expectancy of the fixtures and its drivers. Can you tell some of your major clients? Some of the major clients are, Hard Rock Café’s, Shiro, Asilo Lounge with JSM Group. Brigade Group, G.K. Corporation, Divyashree Developers, Ekta World Builders, Supreme Universal Builders, Parinee Group, Khyber Group and many more. Could you share with us some of the major projects that you have done so far and if you are asked to name one of the best projects what features would you attribute to it? High Ultra Lounge on 32nd Floor of World Trade Center (420 ft high -
tallest building in South India) spread across 10000 sq ft with breathtaking view of the city. It has 2 restaurants, 1 lounge and 1 private dining area. The Entire project Lighting has been done with LED’s both Monochrome and Colour Changing and each and every lights are dimmable and controlled with Hi-end indigenous Dimmer packs made by us in India and programmed for various mood/scene setting as per the time of the day, ambience required or for any personalized event. Loft 38 is at Indira Nagar, Bangalore was a very creative project ever done by us till date, it is spread across three levels and has three bays, so it does not matter wherever you are seated, and you are always connected to the entire space. The Ceiling height is 37 feet and completely lit up with colour changing LED’s even in girders and beam running from the floor till roof. The carefully programmed LED lighting sharply highlights the soaring columns and gently bathes the rear wooden log wall in deep hues of purple but can also be changed to any colour combination as the need may be or if any particular requirement of the band/artist performing there. Asilo Lounge at 40th Floor of Palladium Hotel Mumbai - an open to sky, sprawling rooftop venue with the most breathtaking views of the city from the 40th floor, soft and focused LED lighting with fixtures in matte black to camouflage with the structure apart from the LED up lighters and LED strips used to highlight the bar facia, the light intensity is controlled using automation to match the starry lit sky from the evening sun down till the wee hours of the morning. What are your suggestions on reducing energy costs with respect to lighting solutions in the Indian lighting Market? Since Indian market is not completely aware of LED’s benefits yet, the reduction of energy cost with respect to lighting solutions will take some time but as more and more people realize the benefits of LED lights, this scenario could be changed faster. Compared to conventional lamps, LED lamps are still expensive hence obstruct penetration in the pricesensitive Indian market. Further, as and when there will be an overflow of LED Lighting price will fall automatically and people will start using them which will in turn help greatly to reduce the energy cost. How far the concept of nonDimmable and Dimmable Lighting is successful in India and what is the supply level of Cona Lighting Solutions Pvt Ltd? Indian market is not completely aware of all the benefits of LED’s. The awareness is still not there since the dimmable drivers available - are either expensive or the ones which are cheaper do not work well and have failed over the years. epartment stores such as Harrods are located close to here and the former home of Princess Diana, Kensington Palace, is just over a mile further west along Knightsbridge/Kensington High Street. Perhaps the most spectacular plus of this location is that the Wellesley Hotel sits between 2 parks, Hyde Park and Green Park. Hyde Park is a large open space with a central lake (with boats for hire) and gallery. Many activities take place here including horse riding and within the park are places to eat, landscaped themed gardens and several major statues and works of art. Green Park makes up the
northern section of the grounds of Buckingham Palace. Other places of interest close by include Apsley House (0.1 miles) and Wellington Arch (0.1 miles), both on Hyde Park Corner. Until June 2010 the former office building was the Pizza on the Park restaurant. The hotel opened its doors in November 2012 with 36 bedrooms, all of which will be suites. The hotel is owned by Arab Investments' City and Country Hotels, the interior designers are 'Fox Linton' and is was developed by Rhimesong for some ÂŁ36 million pounds. It incorporates the Opal Restaurant with a twenty eight seat capacity and severs Italian dishes.
There is also be the Crystal bar with live jazz music. The Cigar Terraces include the UK's largest bespoke humidor. Pride of place with the largest suite in London with no less than 4 bedrooms, a private lift and views over Hyde Park. The hotels design marries contemporary and classic styles with a mix of the buildings 1920's art deco past and a touch of modern glamour. Lighting a complete hotel with LED is still a relatively new concept and one which can be hard to achieve. Most clients are still understandably shy of using new technology and also they believe the up-front cost of the product will be too high and outweigh the

Hotel Lighting energy reduction benefit. So when it does lighting was asked to deliver such a project with LED it was a chance to prove the doubters wrong. The brief was to design the lighting for a 6 star hotel and to have wow factor with energy saving, however the hotel opened with a 5 star rating. The budget

was limited and had been structured around a scheme with conventional light sources so we had to design it with the new technology but still be on budget. The areas to be lit were the main entrance, circulation areas, the bar, restaurant, the humidor, back of house, rooms to all levels and the exterior spaces, including building faรงade lighting.
The hotels interior design team had put together a stunning theme for the hotel which had a flavour of art deco but with a modern twist. The original faรงade of the building was to be kept as it was listed however everything behind was to be knocked down and rebuilt to a very high standard. The design team worked together to make sure

Hotel Lighting all elements of the décor, lighting and electrical worked together and gave the most efficient and effective scheme for the project and was in keeping with the clients vision. For the lighting design the first stage was to find a luminaire which mimicked the traditional halogen down-lighters “look and feel” but was LED and gave the right performance along with a warm colour temperature and sufficient spread of light. One of the main issues with LED is that due to their nature, the beam is completely contained within the specified angle, so unless an optic or lens changes the beam distribution the cut off can be very sharp. This can be perfect if you want to create strong beams of light but if you are trying to mimic a conventional halogen downlight then the effect can be very harsh as you don’t get the soft fade away you would normally expect. As the technology was still in its infancy at the time of specification finding the right product took a lot of research but eventually PhotonstarLED (a UK based manufacturer) was chosen as a company who could fulfil our design requirements. Their Laser, Ceiling Star and Tesla ranges gave us all the flexibility and lumen packages we needed for all areas which required this style of lighting. PhotonstarLED are a company who lead the way in LED and their luminaire lumen packages were superb and gave great luminous efficacy in a stylish and well-made product. These LED products also had a nice warm 3000K colour temperature option so we were able to give the hotel that cosy feeling that Halogen gives and is almost expected in any hotel you visit. To save cost we were able to use one dimmable driver for two or more products and this also kept installation costs low.
The energy saving against conventional lamps is around 80%. For the decorative elements of the project cove lighting was required and this was sourced from Architainment who are a subsidiary of Philips Lighting. The cove lighting needed to be powerful to uplight decorative cove architectural details in the bar and restaurant areas along with some of the main suites. The client wanted more than just a subtle wash and required the lighting to act as soft uplighting to the space to create mood options and increase the feeling of height. 3000K was again used to keep the warm cosy
feel to the space as this best suited the finishes from the interior designers. Where table lamps and floor lamps were specified we used Philips dimmable GLS replacement LED lamps with a warm colour and that were suitable for dimming. These were from the Philips Master lamp range and gave around 70% energy savings against conventional GLS light sources without compromising on the flexibility and colour temperature. The exterior spaces of the hotel also needed a creative but subtle design and these included the

Hotel Lighting façade. The façade is listed so this needed to be approached with care and direct fixing of the luminaires was not possible. The client wanted the façade lit to highlight the hotels status and also to distinguish it from the other buildings in its locality. We decided to light the main structural features with small LED floods which sat between windows on each level. Here the LEDs sharp beam cut off became an advantage as it meant that spill light into bedroom windows was not an issue and kept the light exactly where it was required. It was decided to add greater flexibility to the façade lighting by having dynamic RGBW colour changing floods which would be run off of a DMX control system. The floods would change colour for special events like Festive occasions or National holidays and could if required be used for special functions at the hotel. The majority of the time however the lighting would be a neutral white to enhance the façade and be in keeping with the social standing of the hotel and its location. The floods are supplied by LumenPulse who are a market leader in long life LED products and use a concept of twin chambers to extend their products life to 120000 hours. This means the hotel will not

have to worry about replacement or maintenance for around 30 years which will save significantly on cyclical costs. It is also important as access is restricted for maintenance so the cost to change a luminaire using absailors or scaffolding would be very high and cause a lot of inconvenience to the hotel guests so this needed to be avoided at all costs. The exterior of the hotel has two terraces which are covered and screened so they cannot be viewed from the road. These areas are to be used for refreshments during the day, supplementary bar seating and also for smoking areas. The hotel has the largest humidor in the country and cigar smoking was to be encouraged in this space as it cannot take place inside the hotel due to the UK smoking laws. The lighting needed to be welcoming and sympathetic to the variety of uses along with maintaining the theme through the hotel of warm, inviting spaces. The terraces had a planted hedge screen which surrounded 3 sides of each one and these were lit from the base to add definition to the structure and texture to the planting. This was done with tiny LED spots which just sat at the base of the hedge and washed light up the foliage to show off the boundary and create a feeling of security from the outside world.
Overhead lighting was detailed as part of the scheme to give general illumination but had to avoid heaters and the struts of the structure which held up the fabric cover. It also couldn’t hang too low as it was not a high structure and the space was restricted with furniture and was expected to be a popular location for guests to use. In the end luminaires which were art deco in style were used on the entrance area to guide guests through the space and to give continuity of the theme from the moment guests arrived at the hotel entrance, through to reception, the public areas and finally to their rooms. The back of house lighting was mainly fluorescent as this was the sensible choice for the space and the most cost effective for the non customer interfacing areas. The clean room luminaries for kitchen spaces were also fluorescent as LED was at that time not easily obtainable for that product range. Office areas used recessed 600 x 600 fluorescent to keep costs down and give only functional lighting for the staffs day to day back of house activities. The main spaces required some statement bespoke chandeliers and using LED as the basis for this was explored but not utilised. PhotonstarLED were able to supply

the basic light engines and then with the creative team they were worked into the chandelier design however in the end this was discarded during the design process. The lighting in the rooms was a combination of PhotonstarLED downlights and then table, floor and wall lights. The down-lighting provided general illumination for cleaners and functionality whilst the decorative lighting provided flexibility and atmosphere to the space. These elements used the Philips Master LED lamps so we saved energy but still gave the traditional lighting atmosphere expected in a high end Hotel. The bathrooms used LED again to give a functional light to the space and lighting around the mirror added direct lighting for the face so avoiding harsh shadows. Other options were explored for more
decorative elements but due to budgets these were not pursued. Finally we had the corridor areas to light. These proved troublesome as there were many services running through the ceiling and these left no usable ceiling void. Surface mounted luminaires were explored and edge wall washing, however these proved expensive and difficult in their own way so finally space was made in the ceiling for the PhotonstarLED downlights. Some of these were directional so that they could wall wash and highlight art and some were also emergency so this covered escape lighting requirements. The design was well received by the client and the lighting (without Chandeliers, table and floor lamps which were from another budget) came in on time and on budget which was ÂŁ165K. This was the
only part of design process at the time which achieved this. It does lighting was very proud to have worked on this beautiful and innovative project with the design team of Harley Haddow, Fox Linton, Brookfields and Arab Investments. Led Lighting Today and Tomorrow A few years ago, I remember when I was working on some lighting projects in India, few people had heard of LED. One particular client (Shatranj Napoli) in Mumbai, wanted me to create colour changes on a slate ceiling. At that time we had to use colour filter fluorescent tubes which are bulky. Now, LED could do the job with only a faction of the size and much less energy consumption.

I
n Pune, we were asked to light a black marble pyramid for the OSHO organisation. We were working with metal halide which is very white and harsh, whereas now if we used LED we could be more flexible with the possibility of introducing dimmers and colour changes and the whole module could be incorporated into the stonework. LED lighting SSL is both a new solution and a business opportunity for our modern world. This is because energy prices are rising slowly but surely (by an average of 8 percent) and because of environmental issues as well as political agendas. LED lighting is becoming the starting point for new possibilities. In Europe there is a building regulation (L - Conservation of Fuel and Power) which stipulates a requirement of 70 lumens per watt. LED can satisfy this requirement better than many light sources. Now, let us look in more detail at how to tackle a successful LED lighting project. There are basically two kinds of LED lighting: • • Retrofit This uses LED light bulbs which are fitted into existing lighting fixtures. They have built-in drivers, heat sink and standard lamp holders. Some of them can be dimmed by triac dimmers. When the lamp’s life is completed the entire bulb has to be thrown out. The main advantage of retrofit is that retrofit bulbs are widely available and there are already many good looking classing light fittings which may be difficult to replace or remake or redesign and into which a retrofit LED bulb can be fitted. • • Dedicated Dedicated LED uses integrated fixtures, each having a remote
driver and built-in heat sink. These are more efficient than retrofit and have replaceable drivers. So which of these will turn out to be the most economic in any given situation?. Retrofit LED bulbs are relatively less expensive to fit than dedicated LED and are very easy to insert into existing fixtures without the help of an electrician. However, this is a short term solution. Dedicated LED fixtures are more expensive in initial investment but have the advantage of being more efficient. Of course, it is necessary to design the scheme well, to look into the performance criteria, the budget, the maintenance aspects and the colour rendition. In the past LED colours (measured in Degrees Kelvin, or K) have been considered cold and unfriendly (2600K). However, there are two solutions, firstly, today the colours are much nearer to tungsten colours ( 2600K) than when LEDs were first introduced; secondly, perhaps we should learn to accept the new LED colours as part of the concept of modern living. There is one stumbling block, however, and that is the warranty issue. Suppliers, via the manufacturers sometimes offer up to ten years to secure a contract. This is not really sustainable, apart from the need to re-supply and re-install, because the industries in this area are rapidly developing LED lighting technology which means that the LED array installed in the system may be out of date. We have to work out a comprehensive responsibility for this issue which should include• • Experienced lighting designers • • Reputable LED lighting manufacturers • • Long-standing contractors

It is possible to regulate the white colours from warm through to cold and very cold. For example if you have a gold and diamond ring, the cold white reflects well with the diamond, and the warm white with the gold. • • Colours for film making LEDs are now available at 4500K indicating a ‘perfect white’. This would give more scope to post production colour adjustments. • • Battery-powered products For parties, emergencies, entertainment and safety, clothing design, cycling and road safety. • • Colours for shop display of fabrics and shoes In South Asian countries LED lighting can help women choose fabrics for making party dresses by showing them as they would appear at night or during the day. Toshiba LEDs light up Louvre Museum Toshiba lights up one of the world’s most popular museums under a partnership agreement with the Louvre Museum in its lighting renovation project. Toshiba supported lighting renovations in some of the museums most visited public spaces with provision of its state-of-the art LED lighting and renovation costs. As one of one of Europe’s oldest and most storied museums, the Louvre is aware of the need to replace energy consuming xenon lighting with an environmentally friendly solution. Toshiba deliver this with its energy saving low-CO2 LED lighting, and used its industry-leading products to illuminate some of the Louvre’s most familiar spaces. Under agreement, Toshiba provided the LED lighting for the Pyramids that greets visitors as they approach the museum, the Napoléon Court, and the Cour carrée, main entrance to the museum.
Museum of Light Bulbs and Quirky Lights A museum dedicated to lights? Start with a history of light, going back to oil lights and candles, but one will be able to follow the exhibits just fine. The design comes from the pen of Jitka Kamencová Skuhravá in collaboration with RCD company based in Dubai. The Arabic Calligraphy captures a unique moment of improvisation in glass –handwriting. All components are made of artistic hand-blown glass with linear optical decor. They are all decorated in a golden-yellow tone which indicates optimistic meaning.
