THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE OF PRINCESS MOTOR YACHT SALES

Europe

Welcome

CULLINAN

Dear Princess Owner/Enthusiast Welcome to My Princess, the official magazine for Princess Motor Yacht Sales and its dealer partners from around Europe and the Mediterranean. The Summer Edition of My Princess is a favourite of mine, recapping the year in view and looking forward to the rest of 2018’s boat shows and events.

ON E LIF E , MANY L IFES TYL ES

2018 has been an exciting year so far at Princess Motor Yacht Sales, with many developments and a stronger presence at boat shows and in international markets, including the opening of our new office in Neustadt, Germany. We have taken part in a variety of shows new to us this year, including the Ancora Boat Show in Germany and the Vilamoura Boat Show in Portugal. We have seen a huge amount of enthusiasm from our customers for the latest in Princess design including additions to the V Class range introducing the V65 and V60, the new Princess F70 Flybridge and the new Princess S78. Also, the revolutionary R Class comes to market in September 2018, hopefully you will have seen the promotional videos made by Princess in the run-up to its release. This new boat is a very exciting venture for Princess Yachts and we cannot wait to share it with you. The Princess F70 and V60 had their UK boat show previews at British Motor Yacht Show where they wowed our customers with their sleek lines and contemporary feel. Both yachts will have their World Premiere at Cannes Yachting Festival in September, joining other great yachts on show. We have some fantastic displays coming up, including Southampton Boat Show which will see 14 outstanding yachts in what is the UK’s largest boat show. Come along and see us in September to see our stunning models for yourself. As you know, we always like to feature some of our owners and tell you a little bit about their experience on board their yacht. This issue, we’ve included a fantastic story about Eric Bosence and Debbie Townsend which is a very interesting and inspiring read. We’ve also included a few extras including advice on travel destinations and a very special interview with the Princess Design team, looking at the future of Princess Yachts. I do hope you enjoy this edition of My Princess and look forward to seeing you all during the season or at the boat shows! Yours sincerely, Colin Capewell, Managing Director, Princess Motor Yacht Sales

NEW PRINCESS R CLASS

Provocative, cutting edge, exhilarating – 35ft in length, fully carbon fibre, powered with V8 engines and with an impressive top speed of 50 knots – announcing the highly anticipated, revolutionary, all-new R Class.

PRINCESS

R CLASS

Princess Yachts is proud to have partnered with BAR Technologies and Pininfarina to bring a whole new breed of yacht to market with the very latest in advanced technology and naval architecture. The all-new R Class will feature the unique Princess Active Foil System (AFS) and deliver the fastest and most efficient Princess boating experience to date. The striking exterior reflects one of the most compelling and innovative designs we have ever created and conceals a spacious cabin within. Featuring a well-equipped galley and seating area, with the added flexibility to convert to a generous double berth, further complemented by an ensuite. This ground breaking new yacht remains a true Princess at heart with the same level of comfort, practicality and seakeeping found on any other Princess yacht, combined with the very latest design thinking from the Princess Design Studio and progressive performance technology. Throughout the early development of the revolutionary new R35, secrecy was of the utmost importance, so when the time came to sea trial the prototype it raised the question – how do you disguise a yacht on water? For the answer Princess looked to Plymouth’s rich naval heritage. Dazzle is a marine camouflage conceived in the early 20th century by former art student, Norman Wilkinson, while serving as an officer in the British Royal Navy in Plymouth, England. Designed to confuse rather than conceal, the unique geometric design of the dazzle camouflage was credited with saving many vessels during World War 2 by making it difficult for enemy craft to judge the speed, direction and size of a ship. The first full scale use of dazzle was applied at the historic naval dockyard in Plymouth which today is the home of the Princess M Class superyachts. Third year students at the Plymouth College of Art were

commissioned to create a unique dazzle design for the R Class, with the final design being supplied by student Katie Sheppard, who took inspiration from Wilkinson’s original concept as well as modern-day influences including Austrian illusionist Peter Koglers and the Fiera Milano exhibition centre.

NEW PRINCESS F70

PRINCESS F70

The Princess F70 represents the very latest in Princess Flybridge design, with bold exterior profile lines and timeless clean interiors. So, what makes her interior so special? The Princess F70 interior has an architectural feel to it with geometric layering complemented by the use of contrasting surfaces, creating a modern elegant look. New saloon sofa styling creates plenty of socialising space, making this the perfect yacht for entertaining and spending time with friends and family. It’s certainly all in the detail on the Princess F70 with careful attention paid to certain eye-opening areas, such as the coffee table which combines the textures and colours of timber, glass and leather. Soft suedes, bronze tint mirror, hand stitched detailing and Japanese wall coverings come together to create a perfect harmony on board. Imagine relaxing on the open clear blue water surrounded by nothing but simple luxury and quality craftsmanship.

“ The Princess F70 design embodies the ultimate in style and luxury in an inviting and timeless form.” 6

In the last 12 months, we have seen a strong presence of the Princess V Class range with the release of three new models – the all-new V65, V60 and V50. Combining power and luxury, the V Class range enjoys a spirited dash across the ocean boasting a comfortable ride with impressive power. The V Class yachts were born from an obsession with exceptional seakeeping and generous space, much to the delight of their owners. Their sculpted form, shaped from lightweight resin-infused composite material, is optimised for greater lift and less drag, leading to greater efficiency, speed and agility.

PRINCESS V CLASS

All of the traditional qualities of craftsmanship and refinement are displayed and reinvented in this more evolving design concept. Clean flowing lines, fluid exterior graphic and contemporary hull windows create a striking geometry recognisable as the V Class range.

MY PRINCESS ISSUE 16

Launched in Spring 2018, the all-new V60 has already got heads turning. Dynamic, yet agile, this latest addition to the award-winning V Class range is sure to delight the adventurous with its incredible performance and sea-keeping, fantastic handling and ability to reach speeds up to 38 knots. On board, guests benefit from optimum exposure to the elements with an electric sliding sunroof in the beautiful open-plan saloon. The aft sliding doors open out to the expansive cockpit featuring a wetbar with BBQ and coolbox, allowing for dining alfresco, relaxing on the sunpad or enjoying some watersports from the bathing platform. This open environment continues throughout the accommodation space, where three cabins can host up to 6 guests.

There is ample storage in each of the cabins with a starboard twin cabin featuring optional electric sliding bunks. Stunning contemporary design, skilled craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail is evident throughout, from the curvature of the furniture, the luxurious upholstery with hand-stitching to considered lighting, creating a beautiful ambience.

This stunning V60 will be on display at Southampton Boat Show in September 2018

PRINCESS V50 by Nick Burnham

Despite what many brand marketeers try to tell us, true luxury isn’t about labels or bling. True luxury can be divided into three basic elements – time, comfort and space. If you have this triumvirate; the time to enjoy, the space to spread out and the comfort to appreciate, only then you are experiencing true luxury. And few fifty-foot yachts encompass these three pillars quite like the brand new V50 sports yacht from Princess. That the V50 is a luxurious boat is without question.

Available in two versions, you can have your V50 in Open

But where the V50 really nails the hat-trick of ultimate true luxury has to be in the sheer space found on board. Generous though that main deck is, it’s once you descend to the lower deck that the talent of Princess designers and genius of its layout really shines through. From the full height fridge freezer to the all-electric cooking including a ceramic hob to space for a dish washer, this is home from home kitchen facilities, whether it’s whipping up a quick sandwich or catering for a wonderful aquatic dinner party.

10

MY PRINCESS ISSUE 16

Many fifty-foot yachts offer some of these benefits, they go fast or offer big cabins. What the Princess V50 does is offer that performance without the compromise, giving the owner and his lucky guests all the time, space and comfort they could ever need.

COWES RENDEZVOUS 2nd June 2018 We entered the summer season with our Princess owners on the Isle of Wight. At the Folly Inn in Cowes, we had a great night of food, drink and entertainment. We even got up and had a dance on the tables! This mini owner’s event is a perfect opportunity to join us and Princess owners, socialise and have fun without committing too much time to being away.

Baltic Cruising: Best places to visit

Our brand-new Princess dealership for Germany opened in January 2018, located in the five-star Ancora Marina in Neustadt. The opening of this dealership on the Baltic coast has certainly been long-awaited, giving our customers in Germany the opportunity to experience the quality and craftsmanship of our stunning motor yachts right on their doorstep.

The Baltic Sea offers a unique sailing experience with an assortment of islands and sheltered waterways. With its diverse nature, you can find yourself lost between the different landscapes and expansive sceneries. From the long sand dunes in the south to the rocky mountain ranges in the north, there is truly a lot to see and do on the Baltic coast.

Stefan Wilms heads up the ever-growing team in Neustadt, after a successful first six months since opening their doors to the public. “We know many German Princess owners who keep their boats in Spain and the Balearic Islands where Princess is a major brand” Stefan told us, “I am delighted that we can now bring the high standards of aftersales care and legendary professional service associated with Princess to their home waters

The weekend was a great success with nearly 9000 visitors exploring the yachts on offer.

The Baltic Islands The brackish inland sea is bound by the Scandinavian Peninsula, Europe mainland and the Danish islands. Although island-hopping in this part of Europe might not be at the top of everyone’s travel wish list, it offers some really unique locations. Start at Stralsund and include the wild sweeping landscapes of the car-free Hiddensee island and the deserted white sand beaches of Rugen island. If you can, extend your trip to include the beautiful Stockholm archipelago and the Danish Islands which includes the Isle of Langeland, a place where wild horses roam free.

The most

sailing destinations in Europe Sailing around Europe is on many a person’s travel wish list and it’s home to some of the most beautiful sailing destinations in the world. From sun-soaked Mediterranean hotspots to quiet anchorages in the cool pristine waters of Scandinavia, we’ve rounded up some of the best…

Greek Islands Island hopping around the famously beautiful Ionian islands offers some of the most visually stunning scenery in the world. Start from Corfu or Lefkada and then cruise through the turquoise waters stopping off at each of the seven large islands along the way. For more off-the-beaten-track destinations there are also lots of smaller islands to discover and explore - the lesser known Paxoi and Antipaxoi make excellent sailing destinations. Expect all the usual clichéd Mediterranean images such as pretty harbours filled with colourful fishing boats, white-washed villages, beautiful beaches and traditional tavernas.

The French Riviera, France Many may think the South of France is a victim of its own popularity but it’s still one of the most beautiful sailing destinations in Europe. Start at the millionaire playground Saint-Tropez and navigate your way along the glitzy coastline stopping off at Cannes, Nice and Monaco which has been a magnet for high-rollers and hedonists since the early 20th century.

For more Mediterranean finery, start at the cosmopolitan beach resort Bodrum which is situated along the glistening Turkish Blue Coast and make your way to the sun-drenched Greek Dodecanese islands. This part of Europe is known for its ancient amphitheatres, rocky coastline and sunken villages. Stop off at one of the countless bays to swim or snorkel, and make sure you include a stop at the traditional island of Leros. Other highlights in this part of Europe include the peaceful and unspoilt islands of Aspronisia, Tiganakia and Marathi.

Balearic Islands, Spain The Balearic Islands are a beautiful and eternally popular travel destination and it’s possible to avoid the tourist crowds here if you know how. The cluster of Spanish islands include Ibiza, Mallorca, Menorca and Formentera; all major holiday spots known for their sun-drenched beaches and sparkling blue waters. Also include a few stops to the pretty, unspoilt towns of Deia in Mallorca and the secluded Ibizan bay of Cala Llentrisca.

Bay of Naples, Capri and the Amalfi Coast, Italy For the most uniquely beautiful coastline in Europe, set sail from Naples and head down the coast towards Amalfi a town dramatically set below steep cliffs and the exclusive resort island of Capri. Expect sunny shores, pretty towns, fine food and wine and spectacular scenery from this part of Italy. Make sure you stop at the famous Blue Grotto, the honeymooner’s favourite the Isle of Capri, the volcanic island of Ischia and the impossibly pretty coastal town of Positano.

The Dorset and East Devon Coast, England

Greek Islands

Turkish Blue Coast & Dodecanese islands in Greece

You won’t be able to rely on having good weather, but this part of the United Kingdom is just as beautiful as many of its European rivals. Over 95 miles of uniquely formed ancient coastline stretch all the way from East Devon to Dorset. Otherwise known as the Jurassic Coast, some of the rock formations here are 185 million years old and form England’s first natural World Heritage Site. Set sail from Weymouth Harbour and stop off at all the local beauty spots – Durdle Door, Lulworth cove and numerous historic coastal villages.

Capri

Corsica, France With over 200 beaches, chic coastal resorts and a fine climate, Corsica is one of the best kept secrets in the Western Mediterranean Sea. It’s a fairly isolated position which has thankfully kept the tourist masses away so you can expect a more traditional and peaceful travel destination. The coastline is beautiful with unspoilt beaches, hidden coves and secluded bays which are best appreciated from the deck of a boat. Highlights include the attractive town of Ajaccio which is encircled by mountains and Bonifacio, a major port with a restaurant-lined harbour.

The Azores

Croatia

Norwegian Fjords

The Azores are a cluster of small Portuguese-owned islands located in the Atlantic Ocean. The volcanic islands are known for their lush green vegetation and dramatic lunar-esque landscapes and they are perfect for exploring by boat (Horta is a good starting point). Their remote location means they are unspoilt by the tourist masses and if you’re lucky enough you’ll also get to see the odd whale or dolphin along the way.

Croatia is an increasingly popular travel destination in Europe. Sometimes hailed as the ‘new Greece’ or the ‘new Riviera’, this part of Europe offers beautiful beaches and a traditional way of life. There are no fewer than 1185 islands along the crystalline Adriatic coast, and one of the best ways to explore them is by boat. Head off from the historic cities of Split and Dubrovnik and make sure you include the luxury holiday island of Hvar, the timeless island of Vis and the more remote islands of Kornati or Elafiti. Expect traditional fishing villages, beautiful sun-soaked beaches and a plethora of picturesque hidden coves.

A sailing trip here will offer you some of the most tranquil and breath-taking scenery in Europe. The spectacular fjords – many of which are UNESCO listed – were formed by glaciers during the last ice age and today they are a dramatic sight where tranquil blue waters gently lap at lush green shores which rise to majestic granite peaks. Gaze at picturesque villages, isolated farms and gushing waterfalls on your sailing journey through the cool and calm waters. Enjoy!

Charter Destination Guide:

Croatia

Charter Boats Available The Croatian islands are best visited by boat, and especially by yacht charter. Travel in luxury and stress-free enjoyment with exclusive access to the two yachts below in this cruising destination.

66° Above The unique coast of Croatia has long attracted wealthy sailors to its shores, with its inspiring harbours and anchorages. Here, we discover the benefits to chartering a yacht amongst this beautiful collection of islands in the Adriatic Sea.

Join us on a voyage from Montenegro to Trogir, taking in the rich colours and contrasts of the Croatian islands as we sail forth. Set your course to explore idyllic destinations such as Dubrovnik, Korcula and the Drvenik Islands. St Stefan This charming seaside hideaway lies on the Adriatic coast of Montenegro, offering historic cobbled lanes, shaded courtyards and 600-year-old buildings. Team this with its untouched pink sand beaches and you have the perfect secluded getaway.

Budva From St Stefan, you can explore the historic town of Budva and the UNESCO World Heritage-protected Bay of Kotor, best visited by boat. Budva is a hidden gem of Croatia with just 14,000 inhabitants making it a must-visit destination for its unspoilt streets, boutique cafés and shops. The Budva Riviera is the target for Montenegro tourists, known for its well-preserved medieval city wall, sandy beaches and diverse nightlife.

Dubrovnik Whether this is your first time visiting Dubrovnik or your 100th time, the feeling of awe never fails when you set sights on this beautiful old Croatian town. Lose yourself in the city’s narrow white limestone streets and baroque buildings. During its golden age in the 16th Century, Dubrovnik was known to have one of the largest merchant naval fleets in the world, with consulates in more than 50 international ports. Today, Dubrovnik is seen as a top tourist destination. Not only that but also a top filming location with The Game of Thrones recently filmed here.

MIjet MIjet is one of the most seductive of all the Adriatic islands to charter to, an unspoilt oasis of tranquility. The island is home to vast forests, rich vineyards and small villages. This lesser known destination is becoming more popular nowadays with boating tourists, especially for its spectacular salt water lakes which are exceptionally scenic and will definitely leave an impression.

She is a generously proportioned Princess V85, recently refitted in 2016 she is modern throughout and luxurious in craftsmanship quality. Her well-appointed cabins can accommodate up to 8 guests with plenty of entertaining space including a flybridge to enjoy undisturbed vistas out to sea. With 3 members of crew including a captain, you can just sit back and relax on your charter.

For those looking for a thrill, we have a selection of water toys available on board including a Prince Novajelli Tender, 2 Seadoo Jetskis, 2 Seabob F5’s, 2 windsurfs and 2 inflatable paddleboards. You won’t find yourself short on water sports activities to explore the oceans, with a snorkelling kit available as well to discover the sea life beneath you.

All season rates: €40,000 per week + all expenses

Korčula The island of Korčula is the sixth-largest island in Croatia, stretching nearly 47km in length. It is an expanse of stunning vineyards, olive groves and boutique villages. The old town boasts the true heritage of this island, with folk music and dance performances to enjoy. Arguably the best of all Croatian white wines is produced here, so a trip to a vineyard is a must whilst ashore.

Hvar Known as the party town of the Croatian islands, Hvar can draw around 20,000 visitors a day in the peak season. Don’t let this put you off though, as the main square with its winding stone streets and quirky restaurants and bars allow an escape from the outside world. The harbour can house some of the most magnificent super yachts making it the perfect destination to show off your yacht charter.

Vis The idyllic bohemian getaway, lose yourself to the mystery of the island of Vis. In the early 1950’s the island was cut off from foreign visitors serving as a military base, leaving an unspoilt destination. Its lack of development on the island is what draws in the majority of tourists to escape their day-to-day.

Sassy Lively, bold and full of spirit. Exactly how we would describe this beautiful charter. She is a Princess 62 Flybridge yacht with panoramic views and high-end fittings. Her generous cabin space can accommodate up to 8 guests and the flybridge design allows for diverse entertaining and relaxing spaces.

With a gentle cruising speed of 22 knots, you can discover the Croatian islands at your leisure, and with 2 crew members on board including a captain, you can rest in the knowledge and experience of our expertise. As with every Princess Yacht charter, supreme comfort and style remains at the heart of this yacht, creating a luxurious and bespoke voyage.

High season rates: €21,500 per week + all expenses Low season rates: €17,000 per week + all expenses

Drvenik Islands A pair of islands creating a barrier between Split and the open sea, best to visit by boat, they are a quiet haven with little to do and little to worry about. The smaller of the two islands has a population of just 56, creating a secluded oasis of sandy beaches which curve around the cove of Vela Rina. Veli, the larger of the two islands, has more of a historic feel with rocky coves and a handful of interesting religious buildings.

Trogir Set within medieval walls on a tiny island is the bustling town of Trogir. Its wide seaside promenade lined with bars, cafés and restaurants is a must to enjoy on a summer evening. The old town has retained its beautiful historic buildings dating back to the 13th Century. With its maze-like marble streets, you can truly get lost in the natural beauty of this World Heritage destination.

So where can we expect Paul to take the design of Princess yachts in the future? “Our designers are very much the custodians of the Princess design language” says Paul. “We’re also very aware that the brand has a strong reputation for sea worthiness, engineering, practicality and quality, so those will remain a given, but we will look to use the latest materials and tech appropriate for Princess. We are looking to move the design on, but the understated elegance for which Princess yacht design is best known will remain”.

MAKE THIS SUMMER SPECIAL UPGRADE TO A PREMIER MARINA

36

Paul typically has 12 to 14 projects on the go at any one time, double the output that existed when he joined, which he credits in great part to increased efforts to get it right first time. “We start with a draft brief and then do a huge amount of pre concept work where we can be more creative and explore how the boat will be developed. We’ll hold ‘design offs’ where our talented design team compete to come up with the best concepts. This ‘pre-work’ gives a very clear definition and direction, and has cleaned up the process and ensures that everyone is onside before we move on”. A board member, Paul works closely with the rest of the board as well as Sales and Marketing to develop future products. “We’ll look at the model we’re replacing and talk to dealers and customers as well as our own teams to build on the strengths and design out the weaknesses to create ever better products. We also do a great deal of market analysis to work out what the customer wants from our future products, as well as examining what the competition is doing to ensure that when our yachts come to the market they are the very best”.

One dramatic change in the shift from automotive design to marine is working with real mock ups. “When we were designing cars we’d use virtual reality to try and experience what the finished product would look and feel like. At Princess Yachts it’s taken a stage further to actual reality. We have half a dozen highly skilled carpenters that actually create full scale mock ups out of hardwood so that we can experience our design creations firsthand before committing to them. We’ll hold design reviews inside the mock ups and a surprising amount can get changed at that point”.

FUEL AT COST

I’m talking to Paul Mackenzie, Product Development Director for Princess Yachts and the man in charge of ensuring that the yachts Princess bring to market across the next few years and beyond are the ones that you most want to buy. Paul joined the company in October 2016 having previously worked for McLaren Automotive for 17 years. “Antony Sheriff [executive chairman of Princess Yachts and previously Managing Director of McLaren Automotive] asked me to join the team at Princess and head up the design department. It was a terrific opportunity so I took it”. So what relevance does car design have in the marine world? “There are more similarities than you might think” says Paul. “I have an engineering background, both technical and management, with specialist knowledge in the world of composite materials which of course translates directly. But actually, McLaren cars are low volume high end vehicles, and I was responsible for product development

of its ultra exclusive road cars like the P1 which was a virtually bespoke build and sold for around £1 million to a similar customer base to Princess Yachts clients. So a surprising amount of the working design processes are applicable to both”.

TOR NIGHTS ANNUAL BERTHING: 42 FREE VISI

“My management style is very much a light touch. Clearly it’s very important to keep a good control of a project and capture any problems as they occur, but it’s vital that creativity isn’t stifled by bureaucracy”.

ADVERTORIAL

Introducing the new Launch 28 GT Chris-Craft is a truly American Story. Born in 1874, it came of age at a time that defined the notion of American ingenuity. While Henry Ford was creating the first motorcars, his watercraft counterpart, Chris Smith, was developing the very first engine propelled boats and skiffs. During the Second World War, the company reinforced its hold on the imagination of America when its landing crafts transported the first troops to the Normandy shore on D-Day. In more ways than one, Chris-Craft became a symbol of liberation and freedom. Since the beginning, Chris-Craft built boats that dreams are made of. They became the cultural icons of the time that gave people a new freedom to explore the clear waters of local lakes and distant shores. Throughout its rich history, a reputation for quality and style has made Chris-Craft a favourite among presidents, celebrities and American icons – including Roosevelt, Kennedy, Vanderbilt, Morgan, Ford, Sinatra and Hepburn. The name Chris-Craft has always been recognised by its quality, and it’s not hard to see why. Before you even step aboard,

you are captivated by the form of these boats; the graceful curves and sharp edges create a sense of undeniable beauty. Even when the boat is stationary, you can appreciate its long, unbroken lines conveying a dynamic movement. It isn’t until you head out on a Chris-Craft and take it all in, that you can truly experience the uncompromised and unique design. The iconic deep V-hull makes Chris-Craft recognisable.
