PRINCESS S-CLASS 1993 was a red letter year for Princess Yachts International. With the launch of the Princess V39 and Princess V52, a new era of sleek high performance sports yachts dawned, known as the V-Class.

Princess S65

4 | MyPrincess

Combining dazzling sports boat profiles and top speeds approaching forty knots with spacious interiors and the exquisite quality that the Princess marque is renowned for, these two vessels broke new ground not just for the company, but for sports yachting globally. Performance without compromise was the marketing strapline - an ethos that the V Series maintains to this day, with a hugely successful line of boats that span seven models from forty to sixty two feet. Two decades later, Princess did it again, launching a completely new concept in luxury yachts, the S-Class. A hybrid solution, the S-Class cleverly fuses the finest attributes of a flybridge yacht with the styling, emotion and ultimate performance of a sport yacht.

Princess S72

Announced late 2013 and launched at the Miami Boat Show in February 2014, the first and largest of this innovative new line is the Princess S72. From the outside, the sleek aggressive sports yacht lines remain intact - this is a fabulous looking machine. Look closer and you’ll spot the cleverly integrated low profile flybridge. Low profile yet not low in facilities. Easily accessed via a wide comfortable open tread stairway, you’ll find a full sized dining table surrounded on three sides by deep comfortable seating, a wet bar, and further seating next to an upper helm that offers the full alfresco driving experience.

Yet on the main deck you’ll find the same kind of single level living that you would enjoy aboard a sports yacht. There’s a sunpad above a massive garage capable of swallowing a 3.9 metre RIB, and a huge sliding roof section above the helm at the forward end of the saloon. As you’d expect, all of the spacious cabins on the lower deck are en suite, and there is a separate crew cabin accessed via the transom. But the S72 isn’t just performance promise - on the water it delivers with a deep vee sports hull and a thoroughly high performance top end of forty knots with the largest engine option.

PERFORMANCE WITHOUT COMPROMISE

A massive hit from the moment the keel touched the water, the S72 certainly impressed the judges of the prestigious Motor Boat Of The Year Awards, scooping a win in 2015. And it’s been equally well received by discerning yacht owners the world over, who have embraced the multi faceted benefits of this new concept. The S65 launched in 2015 offering a similar blend of luxury and performance in a slightly more compact size, and the Princess S60 launched at London Boat Show this year, introducing this exciting new genre to the sixty foot luxury yacht sector. All three S-Class yachts hold dear to the tenets set in place by the flagship S72, that of sleek looks and ultimate build quality that so cleverly combine flybridge yacht luxury and convenience with the high performance thrill of sports yacht dynamics.

WINTER 2017

BOAT SHOW REVIEWS

London Boat Show

It may seem like a long time ago, but back in January, the team from Princess were all set for a new round of pre-season Boat Shows as they headed for London and Dusseldorf – two cities, two major shows, and an incredible range of new motor yachts In London, an impressive doubledecker stand featured five fabulous new yachts, including the World Premiere of the Princess S60, which was received with much acclaim. Also on display was the magnificent Princess 75MY, the Princess 60, Princess 49 and Princess V48 Open. New for 2017, in homage to Princess craftsmanship, visitors were treated to a ‘beneath the bows’ Visitor Experience. The Experience lifted the lid on Princess, and for the first time ever, gave visitors an insight into how these beautiful craft are made and the chance to engage with some of the people whose skills and craftsmanship create these very special yachts. The Princess stand in Dusseldorf featured no less than 8 new yachts, and brought visitors

16 | MyPrincess

an exciting first glimpse of the Princess V40. Based on the layout of the ever-popular Princess V39, the V40 offers a sharp new exterior profile and a fresh, modern interior scheme. Delighting this largely European audience, a further seven yachts graced the Princess stand, including the magnificent Princess 30M superyacht, the Princess 75 Motor Yacht, Princess 49, Princess 43, Princess 60, Princess 68 and the Princess V58. All told, an impressive line-up, backed once again by demonstrations from the Princess team, keen to show their skills to a new audience. Both shows provided a superb kick-start to the boating season offering a real high-point in the winter gloom, and paving the way to the exciting season ahead.

HOT OFF THE PRESS British Marine Boat Shows, organiser of the London Boat Show, has just released plans for a ‘re-defined event’ for next year. The 2018 show at ExCeL London will now be a five-day event, instead of the usual 10 days, starting on Wednesday 10 January until Sunday 14 January 2018. The dates have been selected to move the show further away from the Christmas and New Year period in order to entice more exhibitors and visitors. The revamped event will also encompass new shows within the show, introducing the Boating & Watersports Holiday Show and another event to be announced soon. Dusseldorf Boat Show

PRINCESS CHARTER

THE ITALIAN RIVIERA Not surprisingly the region is popular for charterers. There is much to see and do, especially by boat.

Immerse yourself in the dramatic landscape of the Italian Riviera, one of the most beautiful stretches of the Italian coastline. The Ligurian Riviera is the name given to the coastline that runs between the South of France and Tuscany – an inspiring combination of rugged cliffs, verdant hills, and pastel coloured villages perched on the cliff-edge looking out over the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean. Not surprisingly the region is popular for charterers. There is much to see and do, especially by boat. GENOA The capital of the region and a worthwhile visit, Genoa is a bustling port – one of the largest in Italy. Its maritime heritage (Christopher Columbus was

18 | MyPrincess

born in Genoa) is still very much in evidence. It is a hub for incoming cruise ships as well as commerce, and the old port has been completely transformed, offering a myriad of cafes, shops and restaurants set within a beautiful new façade. There’s even a movie complex and the city proudly boasts the largest aquarium in Europe. The old part of the city is a winding labyrinth of narrow mediaeval streets (Carruggi) giving way to open piazzas dominated by magnificent renaissance architecture such as the Piazza de Ferrari with its iconic bronze fountain and the Teatro Carlo Felice opera house.

PORTOFINO On Italy’s North West Coast, Portofino is a tiny, painted fishing village and a must-visit destination for those visiting the region – especially by yacht. Its striking pastel coloured houses and picture postcard harbour lined with chic cafes and restaurants, have made Portofino a stylish destination for the

international jet set where the famous Piazzetta is the central hub. A short stroll along the lanes will quickly uncover a host of boutiques, jewellery shops and art galleries, as well as local artisan crafts. Throughout the summer, Portofino is host to a number of festivals from international regattas to glitzy evening galas when the evening streets come to life. But if fine dining is more your scene, you can head back to the Piazzetta to share a meal and sip a cooling glass of the local Portofino wine.

CINQUE TERRE If you are feeling adventurous, you can choose to walk the footpaths of the Cinque Terre (Five Towns). Other than by boat, this ancient system of coastal footpaths is the only way to visit the five fishing villages of the Cinque Terre, Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. These hiking trails wind their way through olive groves and terraced vineyards offering breath-taking views of the Ligurian coastline and the harbours beneath. If not, you can always stay on board, and enjoy the individual beauty of each of the villages in the peace and tranquillity of your own foredeck.

LIGURIAN CUISINE Ligurian cuisine is typically Mediterranean. Unsurprisingly fish dominates the Ligurian palate, offering rich tomato based fish stews alongside pasta and pesto. Anchovies and mussels are a regional speciality and especially tasty when marinated in white wine vinegar, lemon juice and olive oil. Pesto alla Genovese blends basil, extra virgin olive oil, pine nuts, garlic and parmigiana reggiano, to a make a delicious pesto sauce from ingredients drawn from the natural landscape. And to mop up, another favourite, Farinata - a thick bread made from chick pea flour, rosemary and onion.

If you are tempted by the Italian Riviera, take a look at these three Princess Motor Yachts overleaf – available for cruising in the region. There are many more available – tailor-made to your individual needs. To find out more, call our Charter team on +44 (0)20 499 5050 or email info@princessyachtcharter.com MyPrincess |

PRINCESS INDIVIDUAL INTERVIEW

PAUL ECCLES CARPENTER

Paul’s carpentry history with Princess stretches back well over twenty years to when he first began at the Princess Yachts International factory. ‘It was very different back then. Even large items like bulkheads were hand made. The process is far more streamlined of late’.

It’s that background and experience that Paul brings to Princess Motor Yacht Sales, the world’s largest Princess yacht distributor. Having joined the company in 2014, he now travels the world, bringing his unique skills to bear wherever needed. ‘I’ve just returned from Thailand, I was there for a fortnight providing warranty support. I’ve been all over the world, to some even quite unusual places like Beirut, where we put an entire new floor into a Princess 32M, or the Swiss lakes where you might not expect to find a Princess yacht’. But warranty support is just a bit part of Paul’s role. His main focus is retro work. ‘Flooring is a popular choice. A customer might purchase a stock vessel or perhaps a pre-owned yacht and would prefer a timber floor to the carpeted areas already fitted. We choose hardwoods, and normally contrast them to the cabinetry, so if the yacht has dark wood bulkheads and furniture we’ll typically install light oak flooring. For a lighter interior we’ll contrast with walnut or wenge,

22 | MyPrincess

which is a very dark South African hardwood’. On the outside of a boat, teak decking brings warmth and style. Most Princess yachts already come with a teak laid cockpit and bathing platform. Paul can add teak side decks or teak lay the flybridge to match. Lighting can be inlayed, or perhaps you’d like a Princess crown backlit in LEDs to welcome guests in the evening?

We’ve even stripped cabins out completely and changed them into tailor made offices with desks, storage and filing. But mere flooring is just the tip of a very prolific iceberg - the talents Paul can bring to a boat, and the changes wrought by that talent, run far deeper. ‘We can change the layout of a guest cabin, so if a double bed is preferred to two single berths, we can do that. We’ve even stripped cabins out completely and changed them into tailor made offices with desks,

storage and filing. Galley alterations are popular. We’ll install washer driers, dish washers, wine coolers or undertake plumbing jobs such as on demand boiling water’. One area proving ever more popular is audio visual installations. Long gone are the days of marine hifi consisting of a car radio/CD player built into the lower helm and a pair of speakers poking through the headlining. Today a rise and fall concealed television is de rigueur while Dolby 5.1 surround sound systems provide the audio kick to match the high definition punch of the latest LED screens, and owners of earlier yachts are choosing to retrofit similar systems in order to enjoy the same AV experience.

In fact it’s a particularly clever AV system that has been Paul’s latest challenge. ‘We’ve just installed a concealed TV screen to the master cabin of a Princess 60. When it’s switched off, all you see is a mirror. Switch it on and that mirror actually transforms into a flat screen monitor for displaying television or video. It was a complex installation, but it works brilliantly!’

If you’re considering retrospective changes to your own yacht, be it a simple teak deck or a fundamental cabin layout alteration, give Princess Motor Yacht Sales a call. We certainly have the right man for the job! Contact +(0) 1752 393311 or email individual@princess.co.uk

OWNER’S STORY

MIKE ROTHERY – LIVING LIFE ON THE WATER Like so many Princess yacht owners, being on the water has been in Mike’s blood as long as he can remember. ‘I’ve sailed all my life, starting with dinghies on inland reservoirs - I was Commodore of the Datchet Water Sailing Club based near Heathrow airport for many years’. But it was only when he retired that boating became a major part of life for Mike and his wife Mary. ‘We started out in 2005 with a Sealine T51 which served us well as a first ‘proper’ boat. But it was three years later, when we bought a berth at Sant Carles Marina in Spain that our boating really stepped up a gear’. Based on the Spanish mainland midway between Valencia and Barcelona, Sant Carles is ideally situated for Mediterranean cruising, something Mike and Mary were keen to take full advantage of. ‘We bought a twenty metre berth despite having a fifteen metre boat - the obvious thing was to put a bigger boat on it’ smiles Mike. Having visited several boat shows and done their homework, the Rotherys had a pretty good idea what they were looking for. ‘We

wanted something big enough to live on for extended periods’ says Mike. ‘My main criteria was a galley on the main deck rather than buried on the lower level’ comments Mary. ‘I also wanted a proper full beam master suite - something with full headroom throughout and that felt more like a bedroom than a cabin.’ With no preconceived ideas, the couple explored the entire market, but the boat they kept finding themselves gravitating back towards was the Princess 67. ‘It’s a very pretty boat’ enthuses Mary, ‘very elegant on the water with some lovely design features like the winglets that extend out from the sides of the flybridge at the back’.

An order was placed with Princess Motor Yacht Sales in Southampton in 2007 for a Princess 67 and in early 2008 the boat was brought to Southampton to be outfitted to Mike and Mary’s requirements. Mike had a particularly detailed specification for electronics. ‘I had Raymarine G Series Glass Bridge displays fitted. These are simply monitors, the GPM (Graphics Processor Modules) that drive the Raymarine electronics are tucked away elsewhere. This meant that I was able to install a PC and network it to the screens - in fact there are five networks running throughout the boat. The result is that the screens can display Raymarine navigation such as charts, GPS and radar, but I also have docking cameras linked in, satellite TV, and recently I’ve even added ‘Ancam’ - a camera on the bow that allows me to monitor anchor launch and retrieval’. With the boat christened ‘JennyWren’ (after Mike and Mary’s youngest offspring Jennifer, who’s nickname as a little girl was Jenny Wren), it spent the summer of 2008 in Torquay Marina close to the couple’s home and the season was spent enjoying ‘shakedown’ cruises along the south coast and across the channel, not to mention a little fine tuning of the electronics. ‘You’re supposed to keep a running log every half hour, writing down your position, course and speed but we kept forgetting, so I wrote a small program for the on board PC and now we have a ‘Talking Lady’ who reminds us every thirty minutes to note it down. It works brilliantly and instills a useful running discipline on long cruises. On one occasion we were off the north coast of Africa and a radio call came over wishing to identify a boat at a specific lat and long. Because we’d been keeping the running log up to date we knew instantly that it was us and were able to quickly respond’. In September 2008 JennyWren set sail for her new home in Sant Carles, and she’s barely stopped since.

28 | MyPrincess

“We’ve clocked up close to 1,000 hours so far. Our regular cruising ground is the south coast of Spain and across to the Balearic Islands which is about 100km away, mainly Mallorca but also Menorca and Ibiza”

‘We’ve clocked up close to 1,000 hours so far. Our regular cruising ground is the south coast of Spain and across to the Balearic Islands which is about 100km away, mainly Mallorca but also Menorca and Ibiza’. JennyWren has also been to Malta, Sardinia (where the boat spent much of 2015), and cruised the south coast of France, sometimes with just Mary and Mike on board, often with friends and family. One particularly interesting destination was Valencia for the Grand Prix, where Mike’s impressive electronics set up really came to the fore. ‘We had a berth right next to the track, cars screaming past us just twenty feet away. I rigged up two satellite feeds, one for the BBC commentary, another linked to the Driver Tracker. We could watch the cars go past, monitor the progress on the nav screens, listen to the commentary through the flybridge speakers and help ourselves to cold beers from the flybridge fridge - it was better than sitting in the grandstand!’. A decade into ownership and Mike and Mary’s enthusiasm for their Princess, and the lifestyle it gains them, shows no sign of waning. ‘We’re looking to the Eastern Mediterranean for 2018 - Greece, Corfu, Sicily, the Amalfi Coast’. And nor does Mike’s love of technology. ‘I’m looking to fit solar panels next. We spend a great deal of time at anchor so the ability to utilise sunlight to keep the batteries topped up is hugely appealing. My plan is to fit semi flexible solar panels along the front of the flybridge’. Princess Motor Yacht Sales’ enthusiasm for Mike and Mary has also shown no sign of waning. ‘The experience has been brilliant’ says Mike. ‘Aftersales Manager Pete Harwood in particular has been fantastic - always on the end of the phone for support and he never says no’. Mary agrees. ‘We can’t fault them at all. Their hospitality is second to none and their help is second to none as well. If there’s a problem, they’ll resolve it - one way or another’.

Perhaps the number one item on your option list to dramatically improve comfort and safety on board, is an active stabilization system. A good stabilization system allows for comfortable use of your boat when you otherwise would or at least should have stayed in port. Side-Power`s award winning Vector Fin™ stabilizers are the latest and most effective system on the market today. The revolutionary new design of the Vector Fin™ is taking fin stabilizers to a whole new level of efficiency and comfort, more effectively directing the forces to reduce roll, without other negative side-effects such as yaw and sway as often associated with fin stabilizers on fast, lightweight boats. Unlike other technologies, the Vector Fins™ works just as well at any speed. Vector Fin™ benefits: • Minimal to no increase in fuel consumption • Minimal to no loss of speed • Silent all night operation • Also suitable for retrofit • Unlike Gyros, power increases with speed

PRINCESS AFTERSALES INTERVIEW

34 | MyPrincess

His mission, to provide the greatest customer care experience of any yacht company in the world.

TRACY NEALE

AFTERSALES MANAGER ‘We want to create the marine industry’s warmest welcome’. I’m talking with Tracy Neale, Aftersales Manager for Spain and the Balearic Islands. Tracy joined the marine industry following a career in the automotive service industry which included setting up the workshops, call centres and customer satisfaction processes for Mercedes Benz in Dubai. His mission, to provide the greatest customer care experience of any yacht company in the world. ‘My team cover Mallorca, the rest of the Balearics and even the Spanish coast. We’re in a great strategic position.’ Tracy moved wholesale to Mallorca seven months ago and has spent that time developing and improving the Princess Motor Yacht Sales aftersales and yacht care experience. ‘We have a team of fifteen engineers that look after about 140 yachts directly, and we’re expanding all the time. We have technicians that specialise in specific areas so that we can call on expert carpenters, trimmers, electricians, air conditioning engineers and so forth. In the past we had to sub contract for more specialist skills, now we handle virtually everything in house. We take on service and repair work, general maintenance, servicing, gardiennage, basically whatever an owner wants or needs, we can cover it’. The team also recently obtained Volvo Penta and Caterpillar service accreditation. The key to really ramping up the customer satisfaction index is a concierge service. Four team members provide the link to the yacht owners and, once allocated, an owner will always deal with the same concierge by whatever method the customer prefers, be that voice contact or electronic

comms such as email. In fact electronic communication is something Tracy is particularly keen to take advantage of. ‘Communication is key. We don’t just let a customer know that his or her air conditioning or passerelle is fixed. Our guys will take a photo or short video clip and send it direct to the customer. There’s nothing quite as satisfying as sitting at your desk and watching the passerelle that was so firmly stuck when you left the boat, operating smoothly again’.

We have English, Spanish, Catalan, German and French speakers amongst our team. It’s that personal link that Tracy stresses is so important. ‘Our concierge team aren’t just anonymous people in a call centre. We get out there and meet the customers. That way a name becomes a face for the customer, and our team get to understand the clients needs and see that yacht that they’ll be looking after. I’m also keen to get our staff out on the yachts when the opportunity arises. It’s vital that we all understand the needs of the customer from the perspective of being ‘in their shoes’ as much as possible so that we can tailor the experience to them’.

That desire to fine tune the service to the client even extends to having a specific team member responsible for certain clients. This is particularly relevant when it comes to communicating. ‘We have English, Spanish, Catalan, German and French speakers amongst our team. So when we have a German customer for example, we have a concierge member who is fluent in German to look after them.’ Tracy likens the experience to a five star hotel. ‘We are the touchpoint for clients, a central point of contact that caters for their every marine need. Whether it’s a warranty repair, an engine service, winter storage, antifouling, a boat care package that covers everything from regularly checking the warps to systematic cleaning, a laundry service, even down to preparing the boat for their arrival. A client can put a call in to their dedicated concierge and arrive to a freshly cleaned craft, air conditioning on, covers off, flowers on the table and champagne on ice. We’re providing a level of service they’ve never experienced before. We’re creating the industry’s warmest welcome’ Contact Princess Motor Yacht Sales Aftercare Mallorca Tel: +34 971 695 437. WELCOME TO IBIZA

LIVING THE MOMENT EXPLORING THE WHITE ISLE BY YACHT There are many reasons to visit Ibiza. For its beautiful beaches (and there are many); to sample the very best cuisine in one of its high class restaurants or for its bohemian flair. But there is one unique and special way to truly experience the island. And that is by boat. It is easy to be seduced. With its turquoise water and secret bays you can enjoy a romantic sunset alone, or live the moment with the right people. The right way.

From Marina Santa Eulalia it only takes 30 minutes by boat to visit Ibiza’s sister Island, Formentera. In recent years the island has become one of the most popular places to be. The clear waters and the panoramic views are simply breath-taking. Bays such as Illetes or Espalmador are some of the most popular on the island. It’s best to come early though, if you want to secure a berth in the

Marina. Alternatively you can simply drop anchor and hop aboard your tender to come ashore. If you fancy a different mode of transport, choose one of our latest Seabobs and take in the view from a different perspective. Once you´ve tried it, you’ll never go boating without one! For those who enjoy yachting on the islands, Princess Yachts Ibiza is situated conveniently close by, offering support

and a guiding hand should it be needed. Situated at the Marina Santa Eulalia, our team takes pride in helping owners get the most from their yacht. Our professional technicians work to stringent standards, attending regular training courses to ensure they have the up-to-date knowledge and expertise in all engines and equipment. Our priority is that our clients are able to have a fantastic time with friends and family

knowing that their boat has been fully inspected and is ready to go. Every year, we host our own Boat Show, showcasing various yachts, and other marine products. This year, the event will take place in the Santa Eulalia Marina from the 28th April to 1st May. For those visiting the islands during these dates, we will be showcasing the Princess V48 and Princess V39 as well as a Chris-Craft Corsair 32. You will definitely receive a very warm welcome!

15TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION As 2017 is our 15th Anniversary celebration, to mark the occasion we will be organising a special event as a big thank you to all of our customers for supporting us over the years. We have even designed a Special Limited Edition Seabob. ‘The SE Yachting Seabob’!
