Dear Princess Owner/Enthusiast
rybrook Ad
Welcome to the 14th edition of MY Princess, the official newsletter for Princess Motor Yacht Sales and her dealer partners around Europe and the Mediterranean. 2017 has been a successful year for us so far, and in 2018 we have a number of exciting developments on the horizon. We are continuing to develop new territories, and also new ways in which we can introduce would-be owners to the wonderful world of motor yachting. Watch this space! Certainly we can say it remains a great time to get excited about motor yachting whether using your yacht more, or considering a change, Princess and Princess Motor Yacht Sales have never had so much to offer.
Inspired by the finest luxury yachts. The new Continental GT V8 Convertible Galene Edition by Mulliner.
Bentley Motors has revealed the new Continental GT V8 Convertible Galene Edition by Mulliner, inspired by luxury yachts. Bentley’s commissioning division, Mulliner, has created the ultimate edition of the Continental GT Convertible in collaboration with British yacht experts, Princess Yachts. Contact us on 0117 203 3950 or visit our showroom to find out more about the GT V8 Convertible Galene Edition.
In this edition of My Princess we have provided a timely round up of some of our Summer activities. These are a fantastic way in which we are able to bring Princess owners together, both as a friendly social gathering, and also as a great way to get even more from their yacht. The Guernsey Rendezvous, held over the August Bank Holiday, was led by RYA skipper Jon Mendez, so a safe pair of hands for making this lengthy voyage, and a superb learning experience for all. Our Summer event in Mallorca similarly featured an exhilarating demonstration of water toys – so it was a chance for owners to try out some of the featured equipment and add a new dimension to their experience! We are planning to put together a full schedule of these for next year, so if you would like to put forward your ideas for activities to try, do get in touch. We are very excited to update you on the new Princess 55 and Princess 62 flybridge models, which are both featured within these pages. Both models will be showcased at the Southampton Boat Show so they will be well worth a visit. Check out the features inside, to find out more. Do contact us to discuss your requirements, large or small, for the forthcoming season. Yours sincerely,

With the vast flybridge boasting L-shaped seating which converts to a sunbed, twin helm seats, a wetbar and a further U-shaped seating area, you will not be short of space to entertain your family and friends. Alongside dual station controls and the option to add waterproof speakers linked to the saloon stereo, you can cruise effortlessly to your favourite soundtrack. PRINCESS S60 Why the need for two such similar craft? Because one is the new S60 sportsyacht with a truncated flydeck and the other is the full-fat Princess 62 with an expansive flybridge and even more accommodation below.
The S60 is the prettier of the two thanks to a sleeker overall profile with a lower air draft, single-section side windows and more rakish hull window shapes. It also weighs around two tonnes less and has more powerful engine options – the show boat was fitted with the largest 1,200hp MANs for a claimed top speed of 38 knots. The other key differentiator is the inclusion of a tender garage with sunpads out back. This aside, it comes down to your preferred balance of accommodation. The S60 gives over more deck space to a large open aft cockpit than the P62, meaning a slightly smaller saloon. That said, you still get a sizeable aft galley with an opening window into the cockpit and a separate
8 | MyPrincess
indoor dining area opposite, in addition to a raised seating area forwards with its own coffee table facing the bar and pop-up television. The helm seat makes do with an opening window rather than a side door but the sliding sunroof overhead with three glass panels to let in the light, even when closed, ensures plenty of natural ventilation. Surprisingly, the owner’s cabin in the S60 feels slightly bigger than that in the P62, perhaps because it has a slightly lower deckhead (although still plenty tall enough for standing headroom all around the bed) and rather more floor space at the end of the bed. The VIP forward is a similar size but has to
share its ensuite bathroom with the third twin bed cabin, unlike in the P62. The biggest difference is felt up on the flybridge where the S60 makes do with a much more compact layout and a folding bimini shade rather than a hardtop. There is still room for a reasonable dinette aft next to a small wet bar and an L-shaped section of seating opposite the helm, but not the full party deck that the P62 has. The big question is whether the S60 also drives and handles in a more sporting manner than its more portly sister.

9
PRINCESS 62 You’d expect the full-length flybridge boat to feel bigger, and it does. This isn’t simply a different deck attached to the same hull as the S60, it’s a whole new boat.
Although the layout of the galley and saloon are very similar to the S60, all the dimensions are noticeably bigger with a longer dining table opposite the galley and an even bigger lounging area forward with an additional sofa on the starboard side. There’s also room for a forward-facing navigator’s bench opposite the helm and a side door next to the skipper’s chair. Up top there is an enormous dinette with a large L-shaped wet bar opposite. A second circular seating area next to the helm provides company for the skipper underway.
The hull may only be 6in longer and wider but it looks far taller and more voluminous. Some of that may be due to the substantial hardtop providing shade to the vast flybridge but there’s no disguising the size of the saloon’s side windows and the slash of white GRP that separates the two halves. On deck, the sheltered aft cockpit is a bit shorter than the S60’s in order to free up more room inside the saloon. This is hardly a sacrifice as there is so much extra outside space up on the flybridge as well as the new foredeck seating area. And thanks to the lifting window over the aft galley and sliding glass doors, the cockpit and saloon all merge into one large entertaining area.
10 | MyPrincess
This yacht is designed for socialising. There are three beautifully appointed guest cabins – all en-suite, a huge dining area and acres of space throughout the airy saloon. On the flybridge is a sunpad aft and a unique circular forward seating area that can be converted to another sunpad if needed!
The layout below decks is almost identical to the S60 bar the addition of an ensuite bathroom for the second guest cabin in the P62. This has been achieved by stealing a little bit from the owner’s cabin and the forward VIP. As such, the owner’s cabin feels a tad shorter than the S60’s. It’s still a very good size with excellent headroom and vast hull windows so you’re unlikely to feel hard done by and the extra privacy provided by three ensuite cabins should not be underestimated. It also has a substantially bigger crew cabin. The option of smaller 900hp Volvo D13 engines and a slightly larger fuel tank of 3,400 litres rather than the S60’s 3,250 litres may also influence your decision. PRINCESS CHARTER
ANTIBES
Antibes or Juan Les Pins - they are virtually inseparable – nestle snugly between Cannes and Nice on the French Riviera, with more than 23km of coastline that overlooks the Mediterranean. Only 15 minutes from Nice airport, Antibes is a well-charted boating destination. One of the biggest attractions of the area, especially for yachting, is the weather. Even into the winter months you can expect balmy temperatures, calm seas and sheltered anchorages that are just perfect for watersports.
Chaplin, Marlene Dietrich, John Dos Passos and Picasso amongst its visitors. Cap d’Antibes and Juan Les Pins are said to have inspired FrancisScott Fitzgerald’s best known novel, “Tender is the Night”. Since then its popularity has never faded, and it is now one of the most sought after resorts in Europe.
Antibes itself was an inspiration for many artists; Monet, Cross, Boudin, and Picasso. It’s easy to see why. Its stone ramparts and mediaeval towers stand proud against the sparkling blue of the Mediterranean, and the winding streets of the old town (Vieil Antibes) offer a glimpse into its mediaeval past. Contrast this with fashionable Juan Les Pins. Built around its world famous Casino, the resort once played host to the American jet set, which counted Scott Fitzgerald, Charlie
COURS MASSENA To discover the old Antibes, visit the narrow cobbled streets of the Cours Massena. From 6am to 1pm every day you’ll find a typical Provencal market selling local produce – olives, cheese, fresh fruit, tapenades, and sausages, amongst a myriad of street cafes and restaurants. And after soaking up the atmosphere of the ancient town you can take a slow stroll along the old ramparts and enjoy the stunning sea views.
PICASSO MUSEUM A visit to Antibes would not be complete without seeing something of the artist who took inspiration from the area. The Picasso museum is set in the mediaeval Chateau Grimaldi. The Chateau was used by Picasso at the very height of his creativity, and now displays a vast collection of some 245 of his works, as well as those of Miro, Calder and Leger. BEACHES AND COASTLINE Both Cap d’Antibes and Juan-les-Pins are renowned for their beaches. There are 13 public beaches in all - from smaller hidden beaches to larger stretches, boasting smart waterfront restaurants, cafe bars and parasol rental. If you are looking for quiet seclusion, you can always anchor offshore and take the tender to enjoy lunch at the famous Eden Rock restaurant, or perhaps the beautiful Keller Plage restaurant in the bay of Cap d’Antibes, with its private beach and stunning seafood.
PORT VAUBAN Many yacht charterers start their voyages from Europe’s largest marina, Port Vauban. It is home to a vast collection of luxury yachts and superyachts. The marina itself offers 1642 berths, including 19 berths for superyachts from 70 to 179m, and includes a helipad on site. With the dramatic Alps as its backdrop, and the mediaeval towers of Fort Carre, there can be few marinas which offer such a dramatic spot to anchor. It’s not too late to consider chartering for October. PRINCESS AFTERCARE INTERVIEW
RICHARD BAKER
AFTERSALES ADVISOR What did you do before PMYS? I started in the motor trade as a mechanic aged 16, before rising to the ranks of Master Technician and moving across to Service Advisor and ultimately Workshop Control Management. How does working in the marine industry differ from the motor trade? The principle is very similar, booking work and dealing with issues through proper processes. However it’s a far more personal role. In this environment we get to know the customers much better and enjoy a closer relationship with them. How many boats do you look after? It varies. Boats are sold with the Concierge Service included and we pick up other customers through website, advertising or word of mouth. But typically I’ll be dealing with thirty to fifty boats. Which areas do you cover? The area I cover loosely spans from Weymouth to Brighton and as far north as the River Thames. We have a couple of boats we look after at Bray and Penton Hook Marina for example. But I also help out our overseas colleagues occasionally, such as Mallorca. How many engineers do you have at your disposal? On site here we have twelve engineers, some of whom specialise in certain areas like carpentry or electronics. That
26 | MyPrincess
number is growing as we expand our scope of operations. How do you prioritise jobs? We have a computerised loading system similar to the motor trade into which all jobs are entered in order to be correctly managed. But we’ll give a higher priority to a breakdown for example, or a major fault. Ultimately we want to keep everyone operational and able to enjoy their boat. What does a typical day look like? We’ll start with a team meeting to make sure everyone is aware of the agenda. Then I’ll focus on the engineers’ jobs for the day, making sure everyone knows what they are doing and has the parts and tools required. After that I’ll be following up on quotations and touching base with customers either regarding ongoing jobs or scheduling maintenance. What is the most unusual request you have received? Perhaps one of the most challenging was a replacement windscreen for a boat in Uganda. Not only did I have to arrange the parts and logistics for the trip (we sent two engineers out with the new windscreen), but we had to arrange security whilst they were there. We had the job done in five days. What are you dealing with right now? I’m currently involved with quite a bit of retro work. We’ve just supplied one of the new Williams MiniJets to a customer which also involves fitting dinghy chocks, tie down points and sometimes we’ll even fit a transom deck wash
which makes it easier to wash down the tender after use. Other retro work I’ve recently been involved with includes fitting a saloon TV, wifi system, wine coolers, dish washers - there’s not much we can’t do. What is your favourite Princess yacht? It used to be the Princess 52, I particularly like the aft galley arrangement which puts the bar or catering in the centre of the action, whether it is in the cockpit or the saloon. However the new Princess S60 has this feature, plus the aft sunbed and tender garage and a forward seating area, and it looks fantastic - so sleek! What three things should every Princess owner have on board? A nice bottle of something bubbly obviously! Safety kit is essential especially a life raft!. And the phone number of his or her Concierge - we actually give out an A5 card to each customer with our picture and contact details on so that they know who we are and can always get hold of us. What do you enjoy doing when not working? Ironically, after spending all day organising work, I’m really enjoying some DIY at home at the moment. I find working with Princess yachts quite inspirational and often borrow ideas like the position of down-lighters in the galley. I also enjoy air-rifle shooting with my son and family time in general.
“

How long have you worked for PMYS? Almost two years, I joined the company in November 2015.

OWNER’S STORY
OWNER INTERVIEW
SIMON ROWBREY “I’ve never understood the need with boats to contact and involve so many different people for basic and regular servicing. You can spend four figures on a car, take it to the dealer, have the engine serviced, new tyres fitted, the sunroof fixed and the squeak on the door attended to and pick it up cleaned, hoovered and ready to go. Six (or even seven) figures on a boat and you’re on the phone to the boat yard to lift it, the engine agent for the service, someone else to antifoul it, and another person to polish it. It’s why I’m so struck with the new Princess Motor Yacht Sales service scheme. I can take the boat to the the Swanwick facility, drop off the keys and pick it up a week later knowing that everything has been dealt with properly and professionally. Fantastic”. I’m talking to Simon Rowbrey, who’s been hooked on Princess Motor Yacht Sales’ attitude to customer care ever since buying his Princess 42 from the company.

“I’d coveted a Princess for many years, but a new 42 was out of reach. UK Sales Controller Alan Knight knew exactly what I wanted however, and sourced me a three year old example in 2015, offering me a great part-exchange figure against my preceding Beneteau Antares 12 in the process. The whole deal was handled very smoothly and professionally, Alan even arranged marina berthing so that on the hand-over day we could put the Beneteau back to back with the Princess and simply hand things across. Moving boats is a little like moving house, but you don’t normally get to put the houses back to back first! Whilst Simon was clearly impressed by how well he was looked after during the sale, it’s the service he’s received since that has really wowed him. And having bought a boat through the Princess Approved Scheme, he has experienced the perfect example of what has become industry leading customer care.
“My wife and I were anchored in Swanage Bay, just outside Poole where we keep our boat ‘Georgie Girl’. It was a beautiful day but with a fresh breeze, just the sort of conditions in which you don’t want issues with your anchor winch. Unfortunately that’s just what we got. When I tried to raise the anchor, something in the mechanism broke and it jammed solid. I tried all the usual things, including using the hand crank to manually raise the anchor but it was stuck fast. I was considering buoying the chain and letting it go, hoping to retrieve it later, when I thought I’d try calling PMYS Concierge for some advice”. The Princess Motor Yacht Sales concierge service is the perfect example of the company’s commitment to the ultimate in customer care. Each customer gets a dedicated agent who knows the customer and knows the boat. Simon’s concierge is Richard Baker.
“The whole deal was handled very smoothly and professionally, Alan even arranged marina berthing so that on the hand-over day we could put the Beneteau back to back with the Princess and simply hand things across.”
“We got through straight away and explained the issue. I was advised that Leon McGregor, one of their engineers, had been in Poole only that morning and was now back in Southampton, but would be dispatched immediately. Did we have a way of getting him to the boat? We explained that we had our dinghy and were asked to expect Leon in Swanage in an hour.

“And that’s the real advantage with this system. It’s not some anonymous call centre, you get through to someone that really knows the boats, understands the issues and can put a swift and effective plan into operation. And the guys they send out don’t just know how to fix the problems, they know how to treat the boat. Leon has been on our boat before, servicing the engines. On the Princess 42 that means moving furniture, removing carpets and opening hatches in the saloon floor. But afterwards there’s never anything out of place, not even a finger mark to show he’s been. Even the bilges are left immaculate”.
Experienced owners, Simon and his wife Maggie have been enjoying boating across a variety of vessels for many years, typically cruising cross channel from their Poole base or down to the West Country, and so are no strangers to the marine industry. “Our experience of aftersales care has varied greatly. Some are fantastic, whilst others wave you goodbye once the sale is completed, leaving you pretty much to fend for yourself. But the concierge service from Princess really has been on another level. From the reassurance of an engineer on call 24/7 via an emergency number to the ‘one stop shop’ ability to simply and effectively organise all of the required maintenance work via a single call to someone who really understands boats is not only tremendously reassuring, it just takes all the hassle out of ownership”.
