THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE OF PRINCESS MOTOR YACHT SALES

Introducing the f lagship of the Y Class

Welcome Dear Princess owner/enthusiast, Welcome to your spring edition of My Princess, the official magazine for Princess Motor Yacht Sales and its dealer partners from around Europe and the Mediterranean. We have created our magazine digitally this time, in response to the current Coronavirus crisis. The situation has been changing so rapidly, that we wanted to ensure our magazine was as up to date as possible before sending it out. We are hoping it might bring something different and hopefully an interesting context to what is going on today in what has been a very difficult time for everyone. It goes without saying that this is an unprecedented time. With the virus being amongst us, we are seeing on a daily basis, the selfless acts of many people who are caring for others, be it in hospitals, care homes or in homes themselves. There are others who are also placing themselves at risk through the supply of essential goods and services. Everyone who is doing this essential work is a credit to our country. We thought that however difficult it is currently for all of us, we should reflect on the better times we had in 2019, and look forward to what the rest of 2020 might bring when the current restrictions are relaxed. In 2019 we appointed new dealers in Scotland and in Puerto Pollensa, Mallorca, and enjoyed one of the busiest events schedules we have ever created, with the R35 Roadshow flying the flag. Within our service department, we opened

two new facilities in Saxon Wharf, Southampton, and Son Bugadelles, Mallorca, which will give us a greater ability to offer a more advanced yacht service to our customers. Last year also saw an impressive number of model launches by Princess Yachts, showcasing the latest in their ambition in new design and architecture, including the Princess Y85, Y78, S66, S62, F45, V78 and the Princess V55. With the launch of the exciting new yacht concept, the Princess X95, on the horizon, we’re excited to be a part of the forward direction in which Princess Yachts is taking us. As you may know, one of the highlights of this magazine is our owner’s story - an insight into the life of a Princess owner, inviting you on board their yacht to experience their journey first hand. In this issue, Sven Deutschmann takes us on a tour of the Baltic Sea, with picturesque destinations being the result of a challenging but rewarding cruise. We’ve also included a few extras, including advice on where to visit in Europe, an introduction to our new dealers in Portugal, and an interesting interview with our very own Leon McGregor, a Princess-trained engineer in Southampton. I do hope you enjoy this edition of My Princess, please keep safe and our thoughts are with everyone at this present time. I look forward to seeing you all at some stage, in the near future. Yours sincerely Colin Capewell, Managing Director, Princess Motor Yacht Sales

Princess X95 mock-up creates a ‘Princess First’ Transported from her home in Newport Street, Plymouth, the main deck mock-up of the all-new Princess X95 superflybridge was a first for Princess Yachts at this major international boat show. Our customers as well as members of the public were able to step onboard the mock-up to get a true life-like feel for this new design of craft. The impressive mock-up provided an insight into the inner workings of the Princess Design Studio, showcasing their inspiration and application when designing a new concept of yacht, never seen before in the industry. To understand

the sheer amount of space on board this craft can only be achieved when you step on board - the photographs and 3D tours really do not do it justice. This is something that presents Princess Yachts in a league above others, ensuring within this crucial stage of developing a new yacht that the design and space work together in harmony. Antony Sheriff, Executive Chairman of Princess Yachts said, “It’s been another great year for Princess Yachts at boot Düsseldorf. The show goes from strength to strength and I‘m particularly proud of the reception the X95 mock-up display received. We are always striving to create new experiences to showcase how our innovation and craftsmanship sets us apart in the industry. Our performance at boot Düsseldorf means we can look forward with great optimism to another very successful year for the Princess brand.” Alongside the impressive mock-up display, Princess Yachts also offered an exclusive virtual reality tour of the Princess X95, allowing customers to step onboard the X95 in its truest form. On the first Saturday evening of the show, we celebrated the upcoming launch of the Princess X95 in true 70’s style, with a cocktail party on the Princess stand. With décor and costumes inspired by the disco glam trends of the decade, over 150 customers partied the night away with live music, canapés and great company.

Discover the Princess X95 in full on page 32 Princess F50 makes her show debut Launched in the UK last summer season, the new Princess F50 combines impressive power with unparalleled luxury, to deliver the ultimate on-water experience for a flybridge

yacht of this size. Alongside a line-up of 9 other Princess yachts, the F50 enjoyed a class-leading show debut attracting many to step on board and discover all that she has to offer. Designed with on-deck living in mind, there are seamless connections between the areas of this craft, creating easy fluid movement on board. Her ingeniously designed hull cuts through waves at up to 36 knots, creating an exhilarating yet efficient ride to suit any waters. Whether you’re soaking up the sun in the Mediterranean, or discovering the fjords of Norway, and everything in between - the Princess F50 has been designed to suit any lifestyle. Princess Motor Yacht Sales and her dealer partners Across the 9 day event, over 45 members of the Princess Motor Yacht Sales team including her network of dealer partners from as far as Turkey were in attendance. We welcomed customers, both new and existing, to the Princess stand to enjoy VIP hospitality and to step on board the latest models by Princess Yachts. Our staff enjoyed an exceptionally busy show, securing new enquiries across the international market and welcoming our existing customers from the UK and overseas. As London Boat Show came to an end in January 2018, boot Düsseldorf has now become the place to be to get your boating fix ahead of the season starting. The international show has also become a popular event within our diary, as we welcome more customers not only from Germany, but the UK and overseas, to come and see the very latest from Princess Yachts.

The Düsseldorf Boat Show welcomed over 250,000 visitors from over 106 countries this year, with some travelling as far as Canada, Australia and Brazil. The show’s continued international appeal grows stronger year on year, and we expect it to remain a prominent boat show for Princess Motor Yacht Sales and her partners.

The Princess Y95 offers outdoor living space comparable to a much larger craft, with a seamlessly connected interior similar to that seen on the M Class. Design attributes such as the side door access to the flybridge, the floor-to-ceiling window in the main saloon, and the largest hull window ever installed in a Princess, sets this craft miles ahead of the competition.

INSIDE STORY THE PRINCESS F CLASS

If the Princess story has always revolved around the co-existence of advanced technologies and traditional values, the company’s most recent history represents a very convincing affirmation of that. On the one hand we’ve seen the emergence of some overtly radical designs like the foil-equipped R35 and the expedition-style X95. And on the other, we’ve seen Princess lavish more attention than ever on the ‘traditional’ mid-sized flybridge cruisers for which it has become so renowned over the last 50 years.

F

ollowing the launch of the F70 in the spring of 2018 came the unveiling of the F45 at the Düsseldorf Boat Show in January 2019 - and after the F55 won the Motorboat & Yachting Award for ‘Best Flybridge up to 60 Feet’, Princess added a fifth yacht to its F Class range in the form of the F50. As things stand then, the F Class

encompasses five boats from 45 to 70 feet, including the three smallest flybridge options in the Princess family and a more prolific choice of models than any other flybridge line. We talked to Nigel James, our Sales Director in Mallorca, for a deeper insight into what the celebrated F Class now represents.

PRINCESS F45 - MAIN SALOON

PRINCESS F70 - OWNER’S STATEROOM

THE PRINCESS

F Class WHAT’S THE F CLASS ALL ABOUT? The F Class is what most people might see as Princess’s core business - the classic Princess. It’s all about family cruising, spacious interiors and sensible performance. Each of the five F Class boats uses a full-volume hull, designed to generate spaces where you can spend extended periods of time – and that matters, because it means that if you put an F Class boat into the Med, you don’t need to worry about a separate boat and apartment. It has sufficient volume to operate as your boat and your holiday home, all in one. DOES IT AIM TO MAXIMISE THE CORE STRENGTHS OF THE TRADITIONAL FLYBRIDGE? Yes and no. It would be misguided to call F Class boats ‘traditional’ because they’re really quite cutting edge. But on the other hand, they still carry the DNA of the

10

MY PRINCESS ISSUE 19

original Princess shape and the original Princess offering. Flybridge motoryachts from 45 to 70 feet have always been at the heart of what Princess does, so each F Class boat comes with a certain scale of design. Perhaps the fuller, more voluminous hull of the F Class won’t carry as much speed as those in the V or S ranges but it’s not really about outright pace. It’s about confident, user-friendly cruisability and the F Class delivers that to fantastic effect. It offers great space and durability in a hull that is both sea-kindly and capable of travelling long distances with outstanding comfort and sensible fuel burn. So for family cruising and extended passage making, it’s a truly outstanding machine. DOES THE F CLASS LEND ITSELF TO YOUR HOME WATERS OF MALLORCA IN ANY WAY?

Absolutely. It provides a large saloon area with lots of expansive glass, which helps bring the outside in; and yet it’s covered, so it can be air-conditioned or heated, enabling you to use it all year round and really make the most of your boat. On top of that, the F Class features colossal flybridges that generally run the entire length of the saloon, so you can have a whole new deck on which to enjoy the outdoor experience. That’s certainly something people tend to want in the Med. WHICH IS THE STRONGEST OF THE F CLASS BOATS? That’s a hard one to answer, because it’s always relative to where you are in life, how much you have to spend and what you want to do - they are all equally strong but for different reasons. For example, if you want big boat interiors in a small platform, the F45 and F50

PRINCESS F55

both deliver an amazing experience. The F45 achieves stunning space with a VIP cabin in the middle of the boat and that’s something you could only have dreamed of a few years ago. SO WHAT IS IT THAT MAKES THE NEW F CLASS PARTICULARLY SPECIAL? The F Class is the result of generations of development. David King, who started Princess Yachts in the 1960’s, was always very focussed on doing things properly and that continues to shine through in the modern F Class. Yes, these are cutting edge flybridge motor yachts that offer wonderful spaces and high-quality living environments but they are also born out of decades of applied expertise and boat building heritage, and that makes them some of the most complete and perfectly resolved flybridge cruisers in the world.

OWNER’S STORY

OWNER’S STORY

“ When you are looking to cover big distances then the litres per mile become far more important than litres per hour” There are boaters and there are boaters. And Sven Deutschmann and his wife Bianca are the latter. “There are well over 1,000 boats in our marina at Ancora Neustadt at the Lubeck Bay in Germany” Sven tells me. “Ninety percent of them travel maybe 40 or 50 miles at most along the coast for a day trip and then return. Our boating is very different, we like to travel, we like to explore”.

T

he couple’s adventures began with a single engined Crownline sportscruiser in 2002. It’s a boat that soon gave way to an Elan 35 which, with its twin engines and larger cabin, enabled longer voyages to destinations further away. “It was 18 years of experience in the Baltic Sea with those boats that enabled us to learn precisely the make up of the perfect craft for us which would enable the sort of extended cruising we had in mind. Size was the starting point. It’s easy to say that the bigger the boat, the better for distances and spending time aboard, but for where we wanted to go, up through Denmark and Sweden, there is an important limitation. The marinas are so busy in the high season that finding a berth for anything much larger than 40ft is a real issue. But importantly there is also the beam to consider, anything above 4 metres and you have real problems. Of course there is more than physical size to take into account. “With distances between ports of anything up to 150 miles, we needed a boat that would cruise at close to 30 knots, and it had to do so efficiently. When you are looking to cover big distances then the litres per mile become far more important than litres per hour - it’s how efficient the boat is and how far it can travel, not how long it can travel for, that is important. Plus

“ We‘ve been to picturesque marinas such as Marstrand, Smögen, Käringön, Fjällbäcka, Grebbestad and many more”

the boat must have good seakeeping of course”. The couple quickly focussed in on the Princess V40 as the boat that had it all. Build quality, space, an ideal layout and all within a 3.81 metres beam. Perfect. And with its slippery sterndrives mated to latest generation twin Volvo Penta D6-330 common rail diesel engines and a hull penned by renowned naval architect Bernard Olesinski, the V40 had seakeeping and range covered off too. A boat was ordered specifically to the couples request. “We had AIS fitted to this boat, which transmits our position to other AIS equipped boats as well as informing us of the positions, speed and bearing of their position. On one leg

of our trip we hit thick fog that had not been forecast and were very grateful for this system. For navigation we chose Raymarine Axiom fitted with Navionics charts plus a back up plotter, life raft and other safety equipment. Precise navigation is very important in the Swedish archipelagos, where there are plenty of rocks. Bianca deals mostly with navigation and we both drive the boat”. With the perfect boat, perfectly equipped, Sven and Bianca slipped their moorings in the summer of 2019 and embarked on the perfect trip. “We headed first for Warnemünde about 50 nautical miles (nm) to the east along the German coast for the night, and then headed north for Klintholm in Denmark and then up to Copenhagen and then Hornbaek. The next leg was a big push,

120nm to Marstrand in Sweden and then we worked our way all the way up through the Baltic Sea of the Kattegat and the Skagerrak to Gothenburg (Swedish west coast) and the archipelago of the Swedish Skårgarden where we cruised the area with its hundreds of islands. We‘ve been to picturesque marinas such as Marstrand, Smögen, Käringön, Fjällbäcka, Grebbestad and many more. Beautiful places and islands some with Mediterranean like promenades and some that are small islands with fishing harbours and beautiful bays for anchoring at very quiet and natural regions, where wild horses roam free and you feel like you’ve stepped 200 years back in time. One memorable marina was a beautiful old fishing port. Behind the boat, the water stretched out between the islands totally sheltered and flat calm, but a short walk took us to where we could look out over the Skaggerak strait. It faces the North Sea where we could watch the sun setting over huge rollers, safe in the knowledge that our cruise was sheltered and independent of these sea conditions”. In all, the couple cruised over 740 miles, visiting 16 marinas in 20 days. “The size of boat really paid off, there was only one marina we couldn’t get in to, where boats were already rafting five deep. We made sure to book in advance and had no other problems. But what’s interesting is that despite limiting ourselves in the boat size, we never felt cramped. There is

plenty of space on board, the layout works extremely well for us and it was an entirely comfortable experience. The weather played its part too, we never put the aft canopy up the entire time. Instead we just enjoyed the fresh air, cooking seafood from lobsters to shrimp on board and enjoying the company of many other enthusiastic boaters, many from Norway working the trip in the other direction, many of them on board Princess boats of differing ages”. It was a trip that was followed enthusiastically by many fellow berth holders from Ancora Neustadt Marina, who were able to track the couple on real time by logging into web sites that display AIS vessel positions. “This tour is a real dream for boaters. We’ve known many other owners of motor yachts in our home marina in Neustadt for more than 18 years - some have made it to Denmark but most of them have never made it to Sweden or to the Swedish islands. Actually the Swedish Skårgarden is a big dream for many of us. And I know that some of them last year ‘followed’ visually our route via the shared AIS data day by day” smiles Sven. It was the perfect trip on the perfect boat. “The V40 performed superbly - great for cruising at sea and also for the long haul passages with more 150nm distance i.e. from Copenhagen to Marstrand (and later back to Malmö and back to Germany). Excellent performance and the perfect yacht experience”.

Salamina (Salamis) Just 10 kilometres west of Athens lies the rocky island of Salamina (Salamis), the largest of those in the Saronic Gulf. Moor your boat at the island’s port of Paloukia, and discover the island’s cultural sites including the Municipality of Salamina Folk Art and History Museum, or the outdoor Maritime Museum.

Aegina 26 kilometres south east of Athens is the authentically Greek island of Aegina. Pistachios are grown here and celebrated with a four-day harvest festival in September.

Brand new for 2019, this Princess 30m luxury motor yacht has a distinctive powder blue hull. An alluring light colour scheme continues inside where ivory white furnishings combine with stone and accents of marine sea blue and pale wood. Multiple panoramic windows line the spacious open-plan saloon, which is generously proportioned, allowing everyone to gather together and sit back and relax. Another attractive feature is the mid-positioned wide sliding doors, opening up the space to the warm sea breeze and great views beyond. Ten guests are catered for in three double, one convertible and one twin bedded cabin which are each afforded the ultimate in minimalist style.

EXPLORE EUROPE

Explore

EUROPE Europe offers some very well established highlights for yachtsmen in search of the ultimate lifestyle – the Cote d’Azur, the Amalfi coast, Sicily, Corsica and Sardinia; the fjords of Norway, the beautiful Balearics and the scattered archipelagos of Croatia.

Whether viewed as places to keep your boat or as venues for a special charter experience, each of these destinations has achieved fully warranted fame among the yachting elite. But while the appeal of the lifestyle is important, the continent’s very best places to invest your boating time also need to lend themselves to making a better boat life as easy to achieve as possible. Malaga, Spain Most people tend to look toward Barcelona or Valencia as the key yachting hubs in mainland Spain, but Malaga is every bit as charismatic. Founded by the Phoenicians the best part of 3,000 years ago, it underwent Greek, Roman and then Moorish occupation, before various Muslim dynasties gave way to Christian reoccupation in the 15th century. As you might expect, modern day Malaga is therefore a thrilling architectural and historical narrative, as well as a first-class destination for art lovers, but it still retains all the natural appeal of a first-rate Spanish seaside resort. The waterfront, which boasts a vast sweep of sandy beaches alongside the oldest continuously operated port in Spain, has received plenty of investment in recent years and the climate down here in Spain’s far south also brings winters so warm that it could feasibly be used as a year-round yachting destination. Throw in great shopping, an authentic Spanish bar scene, a wonderfully accessible food culture and the upbeat vibe of a place with profound cultural confidence and Malaga is the perfect spot for yachtsmen in search of something better.

EXPLORE EUROPE

Three Lakes Region, Switzerland While Lakes Zurich, Maggiore, Lucerne and Geneva all enjoy deserved renown, the Three Lakes region in northwest Switzerland is a wonderful destination. Positioned just a short hop from Geneva Airport, this region of classical Swiss watch and winemaking is home to Lakes Neuchâtel, Murten and Biel, each connected to the other by means of wide, easily navigable canals. Lined with elegant vineyards along its northern coast and protected marshland along the south, Lac de Neuchâtel offers plenty of beaches, as well as a vibrant watersports culture and a variety of charming waterfront towns and villages. The old spa town of Yverdonles-Bains and medieval Estavayer are both fine destinations and French-flavoured Neuchâtel makes a natural hub for marine exploration. While Lake Murten, the smallest of the three, is popular for swimming, courtesy of shallow waters, which are easily warmed by the summer sun. Bird watching and paddle boarding are also popular pursuits here and

St Peter’s Island, La Neuveville, Ligerz and Biel itself are all accessible places for a memorable stopover.

What’s on in the Three Lakes Region: Marché-Concours, 7th - 9th August La Neuveville Wine Festival, 11th - 13th September

Bay of Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein The Schleswig-Holstein peninsula, perched up in the north of Germany, with the Baltic on one side and the North Sea on the other, is a very surprising destination. Lined with sandy beaches, cut through with deep glacial fjords and blessed with endless miles of unspoiled coastline, it has developed a strong reputation as a summer sanctuary for German high society. Relatively warm, docile and reliable weather from May to September makes this a very easy place to cruise and the region’s yachting infrastructure is also very user-friendly, with plenty of modern marinas, a wide choice of berths, a well-developed charter industry and very manageable distances between facilities. You can investigate the immediate region by cruising around to Kiel Bay, heading west, via the inland waterways to the North Sea and up the Elbe to Hamburg, before returning to the beautiful UNESCO city of Lübeck via the Elbe-Lübeck Canal. Otherwise, you can head east, along the coast of Mecklenburg toward Poland; or you can push north, further

into the Baltic, to explore the southern archipelagos of Denmark and Sweden.

What’s on in Lübeck: HanseKulturFestival, 12th - 14th June Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, 4th July - 30th August

Istanbul, Turkey Turkey is a thrilling yacht destination. Perched on the cusp between east and west, between tradition and modernity, between rusticity and opulence, its renown has grown in yachting circles over the past two decades and the shoreside infrastructures now make it wonderfully accessible. The regions between Bodrum and Gocek, and even further south towards Antalya, are now well on the charter radar – and with more than 300 days of sun each year and some of the warmest waters in the Mediterranean, Turkey’s capacity to extend your boating season well into November, when the western resorts have shut down for the winter, is very valuable. Turkey’s clear, sheltered waters are also great for watersports and, while it’s always possible to find a quiet cove, bay or anchorage for some private serenity, it’s equally possible to embrace the ‘time-capsule’ antiquity of the place or to step ashore for some more indulgent fun. For those who want something faster paced

and more dynamic, Istanbul is unlike anywhere else in the world.

PRINCESS X95

The all-new

PRINCESS X95

PRINCESS

X95

To find out what really makes the new X95 so special, we talked to Alan Knight, UK Sales Manager at Princess Motor Yacht Sales. What’s different about the X Class?

re-writing the rules of yacht architecture The new Princess X95 establishes a new ‘Superfly’ X Class, reimagining the concept of a flybridge yacht with extensive outdoor space and innovative configuration, making the most of every inch of space on board. Developed in collaboration with Bernard Olesinski and legendary Italian styling house Pininfarina, the X95 boasts luxury and comfort with clean and elegant styling and form.

H

er new hull, designed exclusively by Olesinski, evolves the original deep-V concept to provide 15% improved efficiency with outstanding stability and seakeeping. Creating this class-defining yacht out of Princess’s design brief was the work of their long-standing naval architect, Bernard Olesinski, in partnership with legendary Italian design house Pininfarina SpA. Having delivered the styling for the revolutionary R35, Pininfarina worked in collaboration with Olesinski to craft a statement yacht focused on adventure – the ultimate in contemporary yet highly

functional yacht architecture. With both main and fly decks that extend virtually the entire length of the yacht, allied to an enclosed, climate-controlled Sky Lounge and flexible open-plan layouts, the X95 fuses the space and luxury of a superyacht with the range and purpose of a compact explorer vessel. In fact, with a relatively high superstructure and vast glass panels, tempered by the use of long, elegant horizontal lines, her volume-optimised design brings with it a striking external aesthetic that almost feels like the pioneer for a fresh form of motoryacht.

ARTIST DRAWING

The X95 is a unique design for us – one that has allowed us to take fresh steps toward the next generation of Princess. It’s much more open plan; there’s far more volume and space, but we’re still keeping it under the crucial 24-metre load line length, so it can still be an owner-operated and driven boat and that’s quite an important thing. In addition to the sheer volume of space, the X95’s design means it’s pretty much the last size of boat you can graduate to while still keeping running costs at what you might call the pleasure boating level. So is her chief strength the sheer volume?

FLYBRIDGE

It’s certainly one of them. Generally, if you go back five to ten years, then to get the same volume, you’d need a far larger boat – one that might take you into an ownership bracket you’d rather not inhabit. And that’s the beauty of the X95. When we get people on board, they’re just blown away by the amount of space on offer and that sensation isn’t confined to the main deck. With the X95, it feels just as spacious, whichever level you choose to inhabit. Tell us the thinking behind that enormous fly deck.

SALOON

On the very top deck you have a raised wheelhouse area that can be opened up or closed off as you wish. So if you have a captain and crew on board and you want a separate sofa area for guests, that’s easily achieved – and further aft, that flexibility gets even better. The flybridge aft deck area is basically a large flat space and, while we have various designs that can be utilised here, it’s almost a blank canvas that the customer can use to refine his favoured layouts, furniture choices and applications. As long as the client doesn’t request anything so heavy that it threatens to disrupt the boat’s balance, the X95 brings with it supreme flexibility, enabling you to make it almost as bespoke as you want. So, who is the customer for the new Princess X95? On this size and flexibility of boat, it could easily be quite varied. It could be for charter use. It could also be for owners who have reached a certain point in their lives when they have more in the way of diary time – people who have a few months rather than a few weeks of the year to go exploring. After all, this is a boat that gives you more running time; more freedom to move around on board; and, with its longdistance range and the internal flexibility of its spaces, it’s a yacht that can take you in comfort to almost any cruising region in the world.

Leon McGregor MARINE TECHNICIAN, PRINCESS MOTOR YACHT SALES

“We have a team of engineers who will go just about anywhere in the world, depending on where our customer’s yacht is.”

How did you become a Marine Technician at Princess Motor Yacht Sales? I did a four-year apprenticeship with Volvo Penta straight from school, before working at a Volvo Penta dealership. Then nearly five years ago, I moved to Princess and I’ve been here ever since. What do your daily responsibilities involve? They’re amazingly varied. I do a lot of the routine maintenance and servicing on engines, gearboxes and drivelines, as well as hydraulic systems and steering systems. But in addition to commissioning the engines for new boats, I also bridge over into technical handovers for customers, as well as retrofit work. One day I’ll be re-siliconing a toilet, fitting a new telly,

also makes a big difference. Even though we’re engineers, you can easily come to work in a white T-shirt and go home looking much the same. The bilges are all clean and illuminated and the engine spaces are all lined and perfectly arranged. In fact, the level of detail that goes into a Princess engine room is exactly the same as the level of detail that’s lavished on the owner’s cabin – and that’s the way we work. Do you think that customer focus is what makes Princess special? Yes, that’s certainly part of it. But it’s also about the level of detail; the will to get it absolutely right, and of course the fact that the product itself is genuinely world-leading. As an engineer, I feel like I’m at the forefront of the industry here at Princess. The design and the technology that’s being incorporated now is really exciting – and it’s all done for the right reasons. It’s not done for the sake of experimentation. It’s done to make each and every Princess yacht look right, feel right and perform right. What’s the most satisfying element of your job? When you hand over a new boat in perfect condition, with a nice bottle of Champagne and a big bouquet of flowers, and you see just how happy the new owners are. That’s amazing. To be able to share in the excitement of that customer’s experience makes it feel like quite a personal thing – and every time you see them after that, you do feel a genuine connection. So would you say you’re quite in touch with the lifestyle side of things? Absolutely. We might be engineers but what we do here at Princess is all about the yachting lifestyle. We don’t feel envious of the people who buy these boats because we’re fully conscious that we have the best job in the world. We get to sea trial boats that most people will never get the chance to set foot on and we often get to do that in some of the world’s best boating regions. For me, what I do here is very much a lifestyle rather than a job and I never take that for granted, even for a second.

In 2012, a significant event happened in the lives of Little White and Little Grey, two female beluga whales living in Chang Feng Ocean World in Shanghai. The aquarium was bought by Merlin Entertainments, parent company of the global SEA LIFE aquarium chain. In line with their longheld belief that cetaceans should not be held for frivolous entertainment, Merlin began working with NGO partners and experts to find an alternative solution which would enhance their welfare. Over six years later, following an extensive global search for potential sites, on 19th June 2019, Little White and Little Grey arrived in Iceland as the first residents of the SEA LIFE TRUST Beluga Whale Sanctuary – the world’s first open water Sanctuary for whales. Merlin donated the funding required to create and build the Sanctuary to us, its partner charity the SEA LIFE TRUST, and we now have sole responsibility for running it and caring for its residents into the future.

ELECTRICIAN From the South Coast, UK. NICOLAS WILKINSON

GRP TECHNICIAN From Mallorca. ALBERTO GONZALEZ

Little White and Little Grey are now 13 years old. They were born in the wild in the arctic seas off the north coast of Russia and started their lives as their wild counterparts do – swimming freely with their family pod. They were cruelly plucked from this life by traders who sell young belugas to performance facilities. Iceland’s Klettsvik Bay (where the sanctuary is based) provides the necessary natural conditions to encourage the belugas that call it home to live more like their wild counterparts.

When Little White and Little Grey make the final move into the sheltered bay this spring (2020), it will allow them to have much more choice over how they spend their time and interact with one another, just as they would have when they were first born and lived in the open ocean. Those who house these animals cannot fail to note this shift and need to react to these changes by taking a lead in securing a different future for the cetaceans under their care. The welfare of those cetaceans in human care should be paramount, and a necessary part of that is for those who house them to constantly explore how the welfare of those animals could be enhanced by doing things differently. Up until now no one has provided a realistic alternative. By creating the world’s first and only such Sanctuary, the SEA LIFE TRUST has demonstrated that an alternative is not only possible but can become a reality. As a charity, the SEA LIFE TRUST is committed to caring for the whales who call it home for the rest of their lives. It costs us around £1m every year to fund the world class care our team provides - anyone who wishes to donate to help cover the costs of caring for the whales who call it home can do so by visiting www.sealifetrust.org or you can help by purchasing one of our exclusive prints from renowned photographer Tesni Ward – information below.
