he 60’s smart exterior profile has been lifted with an exciting and incredibly deep window line, sharpening the profile and delivering one of the most panoramic views imaginable from the beautifully appointed saloon. Whether seated or standing the view out is simply breathtaking. Above, a new flybridge layout means the 60 is able to compete with craft several sizes above, with a vast spread of wraparound seating aft, furnished with superyacht-style teak tables set upon chunky stainless steel pedestals. AN INTERVIEW WITH MARK DA COSTA USED BOAT MANAGER Working in the marine industry had never featured heavily in Mark’s post university wish list. But a lifetime growing up around his father’s successful yacht importation business in the eighties and nineties clearly rubbed off, and a position as Trainee Sales Executive with Sunseeker Sales in Poole was Mark’s springboard into a successful career that has taken him around Europe and seen him represent some of the biggest names in the industry. Working with both manufacturers and dealers, Mark has been in sales and marketing roles for nearly twenty years, and brings a wealth of experience to his new role within Princess Motor Yacht Sales. As Used Boat Manager, Mark is responsible for overseeing the entire used stock boat business, a sector that he sees as vital for growth.

Mark tells me. ‘Not only is our sales turnover growing, but the new boats are getting ever bigger. We now promote a range that starts at £300,000 and reaches past £15 million. The ability to take in high quality part exchange stock and present and market it professionally and profitably is a very crucial part of that. And it is important to note that we’re not just interested in Princess yachts. We’re very happy to discuss potential part exchanges with whatever marque is offered to us, in fact we see it as a key element in expanding our market share’. PMYS’s used boat sales fall into three distinct channels. Princess Brokerage International is the world’s leading Princess brokerage organisations and sells on behalf of the owner. But the second two catagories are company owned stock, and this is where Mark comes in. The first category is ‘Pre-owned Direct’. These are boats that have been taken into stock, normally as a result of part exchange. They will be fully serviced and prepared, come with a three month warranty, and include a comprehensive hand-

Simply Unmatched.
W
hen a Family of Three Dancers showed up to a small JetBoat showroom in Glasgow a year ago, no one could blame the dealer for seeing less of a sale and more of a “sell.” With the whole purchase hinging on the ability of the dealer to find the family dog a lifejacket in the right colour, it was around about after a week of owning the thing that we all realised as a family that an open topped sports boat in the Solent’s varied conditions without a rooftop cover was only going to take us so far towards cruising the Coast in style. (At least not without coming across many difficulties including the common occurrence of dreaded rain, and the basic human requirement of needing the toilet while onboard!) Barely 2 months later and we had found ourselves the answer thanks to David Evans and the team over at the Princess Yachts South Wales; representing Princess Yachts at the PSP Southampton Boat Show 2012. With no more than a simple request to know a bit more about Princess Yachts from my Brother Guy, David had us all on board a Princess V39 in no time. Having listened to our questions and what we were looking for from the beginning of our new marine adventure, David chose the V39 as the perfect vessel for our family size and requirements. After reading a series of stellar ratings from the various top Boat Magazines over the coming months, none of us could quite believe we had been on such a celebrated craft and could not wait for the next opportunity to get on board. It wasn’t until 4 months later upon our visit to the London Boat Show 2012 that the decision was made. With one crew member Owner Interview
away, David recognised my Mother and I instantly; even asked after our absent family member Guy, who was performing live at Wembley that day. After another tour of the V39, which both David and Princess had given us in good time with no queuing and no rushing over any of the details, we were then taken to the rather special Princess Yachts Lounge which was welcome after my flight down that morning. Having been looked after incredibly well by both David and Princess, the deal was made and could not have been any more accommodating for us as customers, including a part exchange of our current boat but with us still being able to use it right up to the V39’s delivery. Several extras were agreed including modification of the Aft cabin and even the inclusion of the Red Stripe hull knuckle line from the first model we had originally seen. It was at this point we were introduced to John Watts, who assured us that we were in for a very good time, and he answered all our questions relating to our passage plans and intended cruising grounds. He even included a few stories involving sinking, the French and a French jail for good measure! In the 7 months leading up to delivery, David was constantly in contact with us, giving us factory updates and advice on what we could do in the meantime to prepare for the arrival of our new floating toy. My mother, Janet, was invited down to the Princess Motor Yacht Sales London office to meet with both David and Princess Motor Yacht Sales representative James Lane. That day the colour swatches were choses, vessel specs were confirmed and even a quick visit to the bookies was made
to bet on that days Grand National! It was another great day out and all part of the purchasing process. Most exciting of all during this period was the day that we got our visit to the Princess factory. Janet had taken a day off from directing her Three Companies, Guy had been given a day off from rehearsals in London and I had timed a Scottish Bank holiday for a day off from Scottish Ballet. Getting the three of us down to one place at the same time was an achievement in itself. When we arrived at Felix 1, we were greeted by hard hats and protective glasses and a good cup of coffee to fuel us for the unexpected day ahead. That day we were able to see our actual hull post resin infusion and gel coated, the engine bay under construction and even our woodwork being worked on by the many Princess on-site engineers. If this wasn’t enough, we even got to see the delivery of our twin volvo D6 engines (which I gave a quick hug!). Following seeing our own boat at the Felix 1 facility, we were then given a full tour of all the other remaining factories and had a chance to step on-board literally every single model of Princess Yacht available at the time which was a real bonus. At all times, David Evans was very aware that we were planning a future for our boating venture and thanks to his keen intuition for what we are looking for and Princesses excellent treatment, we feel that that future is in safe hands. By September, the day had finally come, as we all rushed down to our new berth at Port Solent for the arrival of the our

own custom tailored Princess V39. As we arrived on the pontoon, John Watts rounded the corner at just the right moment with our new Boat “Viola III” and gave us an effortlessly stylish pass so that we could all get a good look at our first proper Motor Cruiser. The handover day that followed was full of laughs, delicious champagne and made a memory that we will all never forget. Every detail of the boat was checked over and shown to us and by sunset were ready for our first night on board, with a roof over our head and feeling very well looked after. We are all agreed as a family that we feel a part of Princess Yachts and this certainly won’t be the end of our time with Princess Yachts South Wales. Nick Burnham is one of Europe’s leading marine industry journalists, Boat Test Editor for Britain’s favourite motor boat magazine, Motor Boats Monthly, and a freelance boat photographer. He spends most of his life testing, writing about and photographing a wide variety of powerboats across the world. Here are his top tips for getting that perfect shot.
CAMERAS, LENSES AND SETTINGS Invest in a decent brand SLR. With top brands like Nikon offering digital SLR cameras like the D3200 for around £350 complete with lens, there is no excuse not to. Don’t be afraid of all the buttons, you can use an ‘auto’ setting that allows the camera to work just like a ‘point ‘n shoot’. Most SLR cameras are available with a ‘kit lens’. This packages the camera with a reasonable quality medium range zoom lens. Consider investing in a ‘longer’ zoom lens also. A typical kit lens (such as the one that comes with the D3200) has a 18-55mm focal length (basically the smaller the number the wider the view, the higher the number the narrower, and therefore more telephoto, the zoom). Adding a 55-200 focal length zoom lens will get you much closer to the action for under £100. With boats moving in three dimensions the key to crisp shots is fast shutter speed as the potential for motion blur is huge. I typically use a shutter speed of just one thousandth of a second! Put your SLR into ‘S’ (Nikon) or ‘Tv’ (Canon) mode. This allows you to set the shutter speed whilst the camera adjusts the aperture (the size of the lens opening) to maintain a correct exposure. You may find that you have to increase the ISO (sensor sensitivity) to maintain the correct exposure (if your photos are coming out dark, for instance).

THE BOATS Subject boat - Clear all the clutter from the boat to be photographed. There’s nothing worse than a great photo spoiled by a dangling fender or a flapping canopy. And if you’re going out with the sole purpose of getting some great shots then spend a bit of time preparing it properly. Give it a good clean, including around the waterline. Remove the fenders rather than stacking them on the side deck. Likewise, remove the canopy rather than just rolling it up. Photo boat - The bigger and higher the better. Size adds smoothness and stability, height adds a more three dimensional perspective. If you’re shooting from the cockpit then lose the canopy. If you’re shooting from the flybridge drop the aerials and, if possible, remove anything else likely to get in the way such as the ensign.
PEOPLE People make for great boat photos, but they can sometimes break them too. Just as there is nothing better than a boat load of happy smiling people, there’s nothing worse than someone, head down, staring morosely at his or her latest Facebook update. Brightly coloured clothes look great too.
TIME OF DAY Through the middle of the day when the sun is at its brightest seems the logical time to take photos, and often it is. But there is a ‘photographer’s secret’ called the ‘Golden Hour’. A figure of speech rather than an actual hour, after sunrise or The Perfect Photograph
just before sunset the sun is low and shining across the earth rather than down at it. As a result it passes through far more of the atmosphere, softening and diffusing the light and rendering it a redder hue. It can make for some spectacular shots.
BACKDROPS Whilst open water shots look great, cliffs, shorelines, and islands also make great back drops. Just be doubly aware of navigation hazards and creating an anti social wash that may disturb anchored boats or people on the shore line. A clever technique is to move further away from the subject boat and then use a lot of ‘zoom’, which has the effect of pulling the background in closer.
PREPARATION It can be possible to photograph from the shore, but if you’re after that spectacular high speed close up you’re going to need another boat (or a helicopter!) Have a spotter as well as a competent helmsman aboard both boats. Operating two boats at close proximity can be dangerous so know your limits and never overstep them or attempt anything that you’re not 100% confident about. Give yourself a generous safety zone. The helmsmen should be concentrating on the position of the other boat to maintain the gap. Each spotter needs to be keeping a good lookout for other boats, crab pot buoys, and anything else his helmsman might miss in the heat of the moment. And in the event of needing to alter course, always turn away from the other boat. Agree an empty ship to ship VHF channel to maintain communication.
WEATHER It goes without saying that sunshine makes the world of difference. But try and avoid choppy seas too. Whilst they can occasionally yield spectacular results, unless you’re used to photographing in such conditions you’re more likely to end up with a lot of cropped boat shots and bruised extremities.

TWO MAIN TECHNIQUES
RUNNING CAMERA BOAT The subject boat maintains a straight course at a planing speed that is slower than the photo boat’s maximum speed. This allows the photo boat to move around the subject at the photographer’s instruction, giving plenty of time and opportunity to get the right shot. It is also possible to use the wake of the camera boat to good effect. The most important thing is that the photographer is sitting or kneeling somewhere secure and wedged in as it is a two handed job. Set a course that allows the photo boat to run ‘up sun’ of the subject so that you’re not photographing the shady side of the boat. Conduct the run in both directions to photograph both sides. Safety is paramount so choose a quiet area away from other boats and if you’re getting close to other vessels abort the run. Remember, two fast boats in close proximity creates a lot of wash!
STATIC CAMERA BOAT In this instance the photo boat stays still, and the subject boat runs past. This has two benefits. The first is that the photo boat becomes a far steadier platform than it would be at 20 knots. The second is that you achieve many different perspectives of the subject boat in a short space of time as it passes. It is, of course, vitally important that a good safety margin between the two boats is observed as there is a much larger speed differential than with a running camera boat. And be aware of the wash from the subject boat, which can often take you by surprise if you’re still shooting!
Using ‘continuous frames’ allows you to grab the perfect moment.
NICK’S TOP TIPS Keep an eye on your camera lens. Sea air can be salty and a film of salt can build up on your lens giving blurry results. A small chamois is the most efficient way of quickly cleaning a lens.
Watch the background too, many a great shot has been ruined by the presence of sails or a cardinal marker seemingly sprouting from the subject boat.
Use a UV filter. This is a thin clear glass that screws on the end of your lens. Opinions about image quality benefits are divided, but one thing is for sure, if you damage it, it’s far cheaper to replace than the whole lens! Always wipe it with a clockwise sweep. Wiping anticlockwise will gradually unscrew the filter!
When using a static camera boat, get the subject boat to arc around it, the lean in will give a more three dimensional view. You can even cheat and use the trim tabs to exaggerate the lean toward the camera boat.
Watch your horizon. Focussing on one boat whilst rocking about on another can elicit some interesting angles. Try and keep them straight (but failing that, there’s always Photoshop).
Use ‘continuous shooting’. Some cameras have a setting to allow them to take multiple shots in quick succession. Taking five or six shots in one fast burst will allow you to pick the perfect moment.
Don’t be afraid to use flash even in daylight for on board close up shots, especially into the sun. It can transform what would just have been a silhouette into a great shot.

My wife and I visited the Southampton Boat Show in 2013 and, amongst a few other motor yachts in its class, had a very thorough look at the Princess 43 which was also making its debut. At that time we owned a Fairline Targa 38 and I had in mind to change, not foreseeably until 2015, to a boat offering more accommodation and a flybridge. We were extremely impressed with the looks, accommodation and feel of the Princess 43 and expected this to be our next boat in due course. We then attended the London Boat Show in January 2014 and only looked at the Princess 43 and one competitor boat. we were even more impressed! During the show the Princess 43 received, to high acclaim, the MBM award for best boat in the sub-55ft flybridge class. That was it – we placed the order with Princess Yachts East Coast for a May 2014 delivery! We sea trialled in February off Plymouth, toured the factory and made the soft furnishings selections, being well looked after by Princess Yachts East Coast and Princess.

STAYING CONNECTED ON-BOARD

The requirement today to stay connected continues to grow with many systems on-board requiring an internet connection. Charting systems, entertainment devices and our need for access to the World Wide Web has never seen such great demand. So, what are your options when wanting to stay connected?
M
any marinas offer Wi-Fi connectivity but experience is already showing us these offerings are problematic. They become heavily congested with multiple users accessing the system and they are only as good as the connection they have to the outside world. In the Mediterranean we are also starting to experience over capacity of the Wi-Fi networks. This is being caused by multiple Wi-Fi access points from bars, restaurants, apartments, marinas and even yachts themselves broadcasting in very limit airspace. Furthermore, this is being made worse with high powered access points that over power the airwaves knocking everyone’s signal. So the next time you’re in the marina and your Wi-Fi doesn’t work there are many factors that will be causing the lack of connection you are trying to make. 3G/4G connections There are many ways of connecting to the internet via 3G and 4G. Many smart phones and networks will allow you to tether your device which creates a local point for you to connect to, but these are very limited in range and not ideal for internal networks on-board. Another way is to purchase a dongle, this device plugs directly into your laptop. These can be purchased with a local sim card and is a very low cost solution. These too are not without their problems, it is a little known fact that the main GSM providers won’t tell you, they work out what the average usage would be on a data card over a period of time; if you use it too much they slow down your connection. This is done to make sure the cell towers they use don’t get to over capacity. Speeds of around 1-7Mbps can be expected. The latest service available is 4G. The networks are investing millions of Euros in this new infrastructure but, for the time being, it is a very localised and tends to be concentrated around city areas. It is very common for you to receive a signal outside but as soon as you move inside you lose it. Speeds on 4G can be expected around 15-25Mbps.
Satellite communications This form of connection will give you global connectivity no matter where you are. The equipment used is an external stabilised antenna that tends to be mounted on the arch with the rest of the equipment being fitted somewhere down below. For many years Inmarsat and Iridium were the key providers with both parties offering reliable connections. This however has been historically slow with speeds of 9.6Kbps to 512Kbps allowing you to only send limited emails. If you were to surf the internet it would be slow and extremely costly with costs potentially being as high as $25 per MB of data. To put this into prospective the BBC home page today uses around 1-5Mb of data, that’s a lot just to open a front page. There has, however, in the last few years been a new service available called mini VSAT. This is offered by a few companies with KVH being the largest provider in the world. They also have the smallest and lightest antennas around today. These systems can offer data speeds of up to 2 Mbps with running costs that start from $49 per month. These antennas also have the ability to offer local call numbers. What this means is that you could have a London telephone number for a satellite phone system that is being operated in the Mediterranean or Far East. No matter where you are, especially if you are staying connected with your office, those calling you will not pay the earth. There are many different choices to stay connected today, but all of them come with their own pros and cons.
