The term is still in use today for cars designed to cross continents in effortless style. So what of the maritime world? What would define an aquatic Gran Turismo? Welcome to the Princess 64.

MERE GLANCE IS ALL IT TAKES TO CONFIRM THE 64 HAS THE STYLE CREDENTIALS SEWN UP. FREE OF GRANDIOSE HEAVY-HANDED DESIGN THE 64 IS SHARP YET SUBTLE. ELEGANT OVAL PORTHOLES GRACE STEEL GREY TOPSIDES WHILST LONG SWEEPS OF DARK TINTED SALOON WINDOWS ADD VISUAL LENGTH. Topping the 64 is a fixed bimini finished in the same grey as the hull, rearmost supports arcing forwards, the stainless steel forward supports lending it a floating effect. It’s a look that’s contemporary yet classic; stylish rather than fashionable. It’s a look that will never date. Boarding via two sets of steps either side of the gracefully sloping transom you are greeted by a generously proportioned cockpit. A central settee curves around a large table, creating a wonderful al fresco dining area or simply a sheltered place to relax. Of course it’s not the only outside space. The flybridge is huge, featuring a large sunpad aft, another big social area, and even a well equipped bar area, whilst further forward the upper helm provides
a commanding vista. The overhead bimini allows this area to be enjoyed no matter how harsh the midday sun, or simply roll back the sliding central roof section to soak up the rays. But to really step up the luxury quotient, you merely need to step inside where an abundance of refined chic awaits. A feast of subtle fabrics and fastidiously crafted walnut woodwork create a cool haven of light and space. Just like the exterior, simplicity is the watchword, nothing tries too hard. Two elegant and supremely comfortable settees face each other around a minimalist occasional table, those twin long runs of glass either side flooding this area with light. Moving forward, the galley provides a first class entertainment centre serving up delicious dishes to the dinette situated conveniently opposite. Or head past the lower helm, complete with side access door, to drop down to the lower accommodation. It’s hard to know which is more impressive, the fact that the 64 features a four cabin layout, as rare in this class as it is welcome, or the fact that there is no sign of compromise as a result. The en suite VIP cabin will ensconce your most important guests in the lap of luxury, but four more guests

accommodated in the two further guest cabins are far from short changed. However the best is reserved for the owner. A simply palatial full beam mid cabin that’s more ‘boutique hotel’ than ‘motor yacht’ serves up a cosseting recipe of light, space and ambience. Lit by huge hull windows either side and served by a superb en suite, it’s the perfect retreat at the end of a perfect day afloat. With style and luxury credentials so adroitly sated, there’s only one area left to explore. Performance. Two powerful Caterpillar 1,150hp engines provide phenomenal urge all the way to a top speed well over thirty knots, but power, as the saying has it, is nothing without control. Based in Plymouth giving immediate access to the challenging English Channel, Princess Yachts has always had the perfect proving ground right on its doorstep, allowing it to develop a range of craft with an impeccable reputation for sea-keeping. The 64 is no exception. From the moment the warps are slipped, the finger light hydraulic power steering, powerful bow and stern thrusters and precisely metered electronic throttle and shift controls place the helmsman
in total command. But it’s once out in the churning melee of challenging sea conditions that the Princess 64 really shows its mettle. Slicing the curling white tops with the sharp forefoot of its deep vee hull, the 64 thunders through the challenging conditions like an express train, throwing huge swathes of spray up and out as it carves a confident path. Direction changes are instant and instinctive, putting the ‘sport’ into ‘Sport Yacht’ with fast, accurately metered course changes that make it a real joy to helm. But above all it’s this magnificent yacht’s ability to cover ground that most impresses. With less than 2,000rpm on the tachometers, 25 knots is an effortless cruise, hull soaking up the aquatic topography with aplomb, engines a distant burble lost in the slipstream. And it’s this facet of this amazing yacht that really cements the Princess 64’s GT credentials. ESPITE THE WEATHER’S VERY BEST (OR SHOULD THAT BE WORST) EFFORTS, THE SOUTHAMPTON BOAT SHOW PROVED A HUGE SUCCESS. VISITOR NUMBERS WERE UP AND PRINCESS WERE THERE IN FORCE TO GREET THEM WITH FOURTEEN BOATS ON SHOW. SPLIT BETWEEN THE PROMINENT WATERSIDE SHORE STAND WITH ITS EXPANSIVE BALCONY AFFORDING SUPERB VIEWS ACROSS THE MARINA, AND THE PONTOON BERTHS, THE LINE-UP INCLUDED THREE BRAND NEW MODEL LAUNCHES.
The Princess V48 had previously previewed at the exclusive British Motor Yacht Show but debuted for the first time at Southampton on the main stand to great acclaim, a steady stream of fascinated visitors keen to experience its class leading accommodation and sophisticated style. Meanwhile down on the pontoons the Princess 88 wowed all and sundry with its superyacht grace and palatial space. But perhaps the biggest surprise was the Princess 43. Kept under wraps until just weeks before, it took the show by storm proving one of the most popular boats of the entire event. Replacing the evergreen and ever popular Princess 42 it had everything to prove, and did so with complete equanimity.
Not content with two show areas, fourteen boats and three product launches, Princess even provided the craft for the Platinum Experience. The Platinum Experience is an upmarket service that includes access to a private lounge, fine dining, and a trip out on the water. A Princess V56 and a Princess 64 exceeded expectations for lucky guests, winning high praise from all that took advantage of the service.
THE UPBEAT MOOD OF THE SHOW REFLECTED IN SIMILARLY UPBEAT STRONG SALES FIGURES FOR PRINCESS. A combination of a high quality, highly desirable model line up, new finance initiatives and of course the new product launches translated into positive business, the new V48 being particularly well received. After an often wet and blustery week the sun finally shone on the last weekend, closing the show in a blaze of glory that echoed the success of Princess.

ARE YOU ON-BOARD WITH SATELLITE TELEVISION? Jason Macintosh OEM Sales Manager for CA Clase
T
he demand for high quality television has never been greater. When the first HD channels were launched, no one could have predicted the plethora of choices that are now available. Broadband has never been faster and so it seems the next logical step in high quality television is IP TV. IP TV services offered by companies such as BT Vision, whilst very good, depend heavily on a fast and reliable broadband connection. Can this be a reality on-board your yacht? Around the world, there are very few marinas that offer a direct connection to their servers. This leaves yacht owners dependent on the wireless hotspots that are broadcast locally. The problem is that these chargeable services are available to everyone who can access them and when a number of users are all trying to access the Internet, the speed of the service will become progressively slower, rendering the IP TV service useless. Another alternative is using a 3G4G modem. Although faster than the Wi-Fi offered from many marinas, the cost of using such a service is a major drawback. Many networks have capped usage allowance so streaming television will result in a fairly hefty bill. The last solution would be a satellite communications antenna. These are reliable and cover 90% of the cruising areas of the world but are even dearer to run, especially when streaming television. In order to receive satellite television on-board, it needs a very stable platform. Today’s antennas operate highly accurate sensors that compensate, in milliseconds, the movement of the yacht. No matter how small the movement is, if the antenna fitted is not stabilised, watching television will become a very frustrating experience.
An important question for any yacht owner, in terms of television, is ‘what do you really want to watch?’ The reason this question is asked is to understand the limitations of the services that can be received. A 37mm antenna in the South of France will receive a few selected channels, but a 90mm antenna in the same location will receive all channels. In the past 12 months a number of key television providers have invested billions of dollars into launch platforms for the next generation of satellites. This is being done to replace old technology and help increase capacity for newer HD channels. These new satellites have significantly increased in capacity and will provide extensive HD television for the next 15 years. Over the next 12 months, yacht owners heading to the Mediterranean will begin to notice existing channels disappear but a new range of channels appearing in areas that could never receive them before. It seems satellite television is just getting started! Our advice is, if you want to watch something specific then please talk to us before you make your decision. We will give you the most accurate information available to us. In collaboration with the Spanish electricity company ENDESA, major sponsor of the Santa Eulalia del Rio sailing club, Princess Yachts Ibiza provided a new Princess V42 as a spectator boat for ENDESA clients randomly drawn online. The winners of the draw had the opportunity not only to go onboard the Princess V42 but also enjoy hours of cruising in the bay of Santa Eulalia amongst the World Championship Tornado races.. Keal Hartmann Blanchfield, son of James Blanchfield, was involved in the weeks action. Keal and his sailing club team are amongst the best sailors in Ibiza, he is a member of the Santa Eulalia Sailing Club, and has been to numerous national regattas supporting the Optimist class. 30 teams entered the championship in total, Greece came 1st, Germany came 2nd and Australia came 3rd. During the prize giving, Princess Yachts Ibiza received a big ‘thank you’ and a picture of the Princess Partners - Ibiza

RUSSELL BISHOP MARINE FINANCE CONSULTANT Until recently Princess Motor Yacht Sales have enjoyed a cordial but ‘arms length’ relationship with marine finance institutions. Whilst well versed with the technical side of motor yacht finance paperwork, customers generally dealt with the finance companies directly.
WHAT IS THE LEVEL OF CONFIDENTIALITY?
With the introduction of a dedicated Marine Finance Consultant all that has changed, and Russell Bishop, the man tasked with that title, speaks to MyPrincess about his role.
WHICH FINANCE COMPANY DO YOU WORK WITH?
WHAT IS YOUR ROLE WITHIN THE CUSTOMER’S BUYING PROCESS? My role is essentially to assist customers in understanding how we can help facilitate their purchase and help keep their money working for them. Often our customers could quite easily buy their new Princess outright, but may prefer to keep their assets liquid, or spread payments, allowing them to to take advantage of maturing investments. We can also offer Deposit Contributions on selected models whereby we contribute directly toward the finance deposit as part of the deal, advise on fixed and variable rate loans, penalty free early settlements and tailor made funding packages with ‘balloon’ style payment options. We can also advise overseas clients on VAT advantageous leasing options.

AT WHAT POINT DO YOU GET INVOLVED? Traditionally finance was the last stage in the buying process. Once the deal was done the finance company was wheeled in to assist in paying for the purchase. An in house Marine Finance Consultant allows customers to integrate funding requirements at an early stage and garner a better understanding of the costs involved and options open to them. From our perspective it allows us to more accurately assist a customer in choosing a package that works best for them. We do this by gaining a thorough understanding of the customer’s boating needs and working with them to create a bespoke package that fulfils their brief within a budget that is comfortable for them. HOW FAR THROUGH THE PROCESS DO YOU GO? We’ll assist right through the finance process up to providing a formal written quotation. Once the purchase is agreed we continue to liaise between the client and the finance company to ensure that all the requisite paperwork is in place in a timely and orderly fashion. Basically we take all of the hassle out of the process.
