LONDON BOAT SHOW

SHOW REVIEW 9

P

rincess celebrated the 60th anniversary of the London Boat Show with perhaps their most expansive stand ever, granting acres of space for clients, customers and friends of Princess to relax and savour the massive ten boat display in its usual prominent central position and enjoy personally accompanied viewings. Debuting for the first time at London was the Princess V48 Open, sister ship of the V48 deck saloon that was launched last year and which is already proving a huge success. Living up to its name with a massive and Med friendly open cockpit beneath an open backed hard top with a huge electric vinyl sliding roof, the V48 Open offers the palatial luxury accommodation of the V48 down below. Where it differs is on the upper deck, where you’ll find a simply stunning amount of outdoor day space. Back aft, a fabulous sunpad completes the Med look, and there is even a dinghy garage beneath its soft weatherproof upholstery, easily capable of housing a JetRIB. Also shown for the first time at London and proving every bit as popular as it did at its Southampton Boat Show launch, the Princess 43 ramped up interest still further by winning the ‘2014 Flybridge up to 55 feet’ category at the prestigious Motor Boat Of The Year Awards held concurrently with the boat show. Finally, the 88 Motor Yacht, also launched at Southampton, was very well received once again, continuing to impress all that entered its sumptuous interior or explored its expansive decks. The upbeat mood of Southampton show was echoed by the London show, signalling the continued return of confidence and positivity throughout the marine industry, nowhere more so than at Princess, where strong interest during the nine days translated into steady business, both at and after the show.

A LIFE ON THE OCEAN OWNER INTERVIEW

If you want to find someone who epitomises the expression ‘Has salt water running through his veins’ then you need to meet Keith Pope. Born and bred in Cornwall and one of the friendliest characters you’re ever likely to come across, Keith has been on, around, and indeed under the water since he was a boy. But the real story starts in 1991, when Keith bought ‘Josephine’, a Cygnus 38 Revenge heavy duty work boat, and based it in Hayle on the north coast of Cornwall.

T

o begin with, work mostly revolved around marine surveys and angling trips, but then Keith won a contract to provide the first boat involved with crew changes for a wind farm being created off the Swedish Coast, working out of Älvsborg. Seven months later, and already carving a strong reputation for himself in the commercial shipping world, it was off to Ireland working for General Electric on the Arklow Bank Windfarm. Two more years in Sweden followed, based out of Malmo doing survey work, taking core samples from the sea bed before many thousands of tons of the Øresund Bridge, linking Sweden to Denmark, was stood on it.

the Channel Islands and clearing the underwater diffuser of a potash mine 3 miles off Middlesborough were examples of the sheer diversity of Keith’s activities.

In 2004 Keith raised the bar, swapping the faithful ‘Josephine’ for the ‘Terramare 1’, a 24 metre 115 ton German built Landing Craft. Able to sleep twelve, and originally built to transport eighty tons of Tiger tank, this was a ship capable of new horizons, and Keith wasted no time in putting it to work. Delivering stores to the Scilly Isles, laying Fibre Optic cables from 80 ton drums in

A rather more unusual task was underwater surveying around the Maunsell Forts at Red Sands Tower. Maunsell Forts were originally anti aircraft gun towers erected at the mouth of the River Thames (and are now listed structures). During World War Two the Luftwaffa used the River Thames to guide them in to London. The Maunsell Forts were put in place to dissuade them. After the war much of the munitions were simply dumped

over the side. Now the site of another wind farm, it was Keith and his crew’s unenviable task to clear the area of potential explosives. “Anything we brought up we stuck in a bucket of water...” says Keith, “...just in case”. But the job that really hit the headlines was the wreck of the Napoli in 2007. Beached at Branscombe on the South Devon coast, the Napoli made the news again and again, first as she was wrecked, and then as looters stole cargo washed up on to the beach. But of course much of it never got that far, and it was Keith and his crew’s job to find and recover the rest. “We were tasked with the

11

12

area from the shoreline to quarter of a mile out over a four mile stretch of coast” Keith tells me. Items recovered included scores of BMW engines bolted four to a pallet, over 300 Land Rover tyres, even complete vehicles. “We had divers filling baskets and were craning out five or six tons at a time. We found three tons of Kinder eggs!” Since then business has continued to boom. From assisting EON with underwater cable installation for the Robin Rigg Windfarm eight miles off the Cumbrian Coast to threading the main export core into the base of each structure at the London Array (the huge Windfarm development fifteen miles north east of Ramsgate); life afloat has never been busier. With responsibility for ‘Terramore 1’ now handed on to the steady and capable hands of Keith’s son Ben, Keith and his wife Julie are finally able to take it easy. But after a lifetime afloat Keith isn’t giving up the sea just yet. “It’s strange, after being offshore most of my career you’d think I’d have had enough of it but I still absolutely love it. There is nothing in the world like it, and I miss watching the dawn break with a spectacular sunrise from the wheelhouse”. Keen to keep afloat, Keith and Julie visited the UK boat shows and put some serious work into finding the best boat on the market. “Of course the quality on the surface is important” says Keith, “but given my background I was looking much deeper, at everything from the strength of the handrails on the flybridge to the quality of the door hinges, and no matter what we looked at, we kept getting drawn back to Princess”.

“THE THING THAT STRUCK ME ABOUT PRINCESS WAS THAT NO MATTER WHAT SIZE THE BOAT, THE QUALITY WAS CONSISTENT ACROSS THE RANGE, ONLY THE PHYSICAL SIZE CHANGED. WE BOUGHT ONE OF THE SMALLEST ONES BUT JUST AS THE SMALLEST ASTON MARTIN IS STILL AN ASTON MARTIN, A PRINCESS 42 IS STILL ABSOLUTELY A PRINCESS”.

At the end of last year a deal was done, and Keith and Julie took delivery of a Princess 42 from Richard Clarke at Princess Motor Yacht Sales in Plymouth.

But there was another aspect that impressed Keith just as much. “I’ve got to say that the quality of service we received was exceptional” says Keith. “I

don’t believe that we could have been treated any better if we were buying a 35 Metre Princess. Mind you,” he says with a smile, “I wouldn’t mind finding out”. But the 35 Metre will have to wait for a while because their new 42 clearly suits them perfectly. Kept in Cornwall (where else?) at Pendennis Marina in Falmouth, ‘Sowena’ provides the perfect bolt hole for Keith and Julie, and gives them access to the stunning Falmouth Harbour or out along the South Coast. But old habits die hard and Keith can’t resist putting the boat to work. “We’re going to run day charters with her” Keith tells me. “This area is steeped with history, playing a large part in Operation Overlord, the Normandy landing in World War Two for instance. We’re going to be giving people a tour of the area, as well as offering wedding parties and day’s out”. It sounds like Keith’s new Princess is going to see plenty of use, and Keith is going to remain where he belongs - offshore, with salt water running through his veins.

ITALIAN RIVIERA

THERE ARE MANY RIVIERAS IN THE WORLD, HOWEVER ALL WILL BE HARD PRESSED TO COMPETE WITH THE OFFERINGS OF THE ITALIAN RIVIERA.

With the historical port city of Genoa (Christopher Columbus was born here) at its centre, the Italian Riviera can be best described as a narrow strip of land that stretches from the French Riviera near Ventimiglia to Capo Carvo close to the boarder of Tuscany. It lies between the Ligurian Sea and the mountain chain that forms the Alps Maritime. Discovered by the wealthy classes in the early 19th Century, the Italian Riviera has it all: Unesco world heritage sites, picturesque villages, charming marinas, enchanting fishing ports, unspoilt landscapes, lush green mountains, rich

vineyards, medieval churches, romantic beaches and the list goes on and on! Having listened to the advice of our most experienced captains and yacht charter crews, and taken on board the suggestions of many of our clients, Princess Charter has put together an Italian Riviera yacht charter itinerary that takes in the highlights of this region. You may feel that you prefer a more bespoke itinerary, taking in some particular or preferred routes or villages. If this is the case please ask your dedicated Princess charter broker or charter Yacht captain, who will be only too pleased to facilitate your requests.

From Portofino all the way to Riva di Traiano, spending 7 days cruising the Italian Riviera will leave you with a feeling of revitalisation and harmony as you become one with some of the most spectacular natural beauty that there is on any Riviera. DAY 1 AND STARTING POINT. Portofino is one of the loveliest yachting ports in the world, and is on most charterers must-do list, hence we start our charter from here. This very aristocratic resort has something for everyone! From walking paths and trails in a national park to diving and snorkelling in the surrounding sea which has also been designated a national park due to the unique coral and fauna. In fact such a natural peaceful sanctuary is the sea that even dolphins and whales gather in the Cetacean Sanctuary! It’s not just the natural beauty which will entice you. For those who would like to indulge in some shopping before the charter, you will find that amongst the ancient buildings, the beautiful backdrops, and pastel coloured homes , names such as Luis Vuitton, Cartier, Hermes, Gucci and others can be found dazzling amongst the beautiful surroundings.

DAY 2 PORTOVENERE A beautiful contrast to the very lovely Portofino, Portovenere is a charming gorgeous fishing village. With the calming crystal blue sea acting as a backdrop you will be taken in by the picturesque colourful houses. Away from the hustle and bustle of city life the tranquility in this village will not fail to touch you. Neither will the warmth of its people or the fresh beautifully cooked sea food. DAY 3 ELBA Overnight cruise to Elba, which is a green and mountainous island hardly touched by time. Elba has many coves and attractive harbours to explore. If staying in the port of Portoferraio, you can visit the villa where Napoleon spent his exile - Villa dei Mulini. Whilst on this lush island, it is worth trying the local wines - Elba Bianco and Elba. DAY 4 PUNTA ALA An oasis of peace. This fascinating area is rich in wines that accompany traditional products such as cheese. The recipes are in line with the Tuscan tradition of simple and genuine food; also the products are still farmed by small businesses, a symbol of tradition still alive in this land. DAY 5 GIGLIO Like a pearl in an oyster, the small Giglio isle lies cradled by warm blue seas in the southern corner of the Tuscan Archipelago. Giglio’s mild climate, unspoilt nature and crystal clear, emerald coloured waters will leave you speechless. You can go ashore and visit Giglio Castello, a typically Tuscan medieval hilltop village or enjoy the scuba diving activities. DAY 6 PORTO ERCOLE This pretty seaside resort is one of the most famous in Tuscany and is one of the two main towns on Argentario. Porto Ercole is a place more associated with pleasure, good food, boats and relaxation. You may consider making a reservation at the 2 Michelin star restaurant Il Pellicano and enjoy a view of the Tyrrhenian coast and the surprising creations of the Michelin-starred Chef Antonio DAY 7 GIANNUTRI A half moon shaped island located at the extreme southern part of the Tuscan Archipelago, Giannutri is the Tuscan Archipelago’s most beautiful island. It’s part of the Parco Nazionale dell’Arcipelago Toscano, which means visitors have to be careful not to disturb any of the flora or fauna. Finish your cruising on Riva di Traiano. Over the years we have created a network which could also keep up with the new market condition. Our strong presence in Münster is based on company grounds of 13,000 sqm with about 4,000 sqm of roofed exhibition halls, a re-fuelling station for boats and an own presentation harbour with about 20 vessel berths which is exclusively for our personal use. BCM owns a crane at its premises, a slipway and in particular the option to launch boats at any time without any outside help...for trial trips, boat checks and for handing over boats and briefings. The wide range of various services, such as technical services and boat refit measurements, have been further and further perfected since the foundation of the company in 1976. This particularly includes professional gel coating along with mould-making, any accruing woodwork, optical refurbishment, anti-fouling coatings and all other work or maintenance needed on a boat. In Münster and Flensburg there are at an average about 70 to 80 used boats in our own halls or in the own BCM harbour or in the harbour of the Marina Sonwik in Flensburg. In addition to these, we are currently offering about 800 used boats and yachts on our “Network 2013” on all leading portals worldwide which we are offering for sale either under our own management or in cooperation with our partners. INTERVIEW

AN INSIGHT INTO PRINCESS BROKERAGE INTERNATIONAL WITH JOHN TIPTON Brand strength rests firmly on the twin pillars of longevity and experience, and both elements are firmly present in Brokerage Specialist John Tipton and Princess Brokerage International. John has been closely associated with Princess Brokerage International from the very beginning over two decades ago, and has been involved in its evolution into what is now probably the largest collection of brokerage Princess yachts anywhere in the world. “We are the only brokerage organisation authorised by Princess Yachts International (the manufacturer) to use the Princess title and the trademark crown” says John, “and that gives us tremendous credibility within the market. We are normally the first port of call for anyone seeking a Princess, be it a two year old 98 Motor Yacht or a classic twenty year old 435” (both of which, in fact, can be found listed right now). “We typically have in the region of one hundred listings at any one time covering a diverse cross section of Princess production past and present”.

IT HELPS, OF COURSE, THAT PRINCESS BROKERAGE INTERNATIONAL IS PART OF PRINCESS MOTOR YACHT SALES, THE LARGEST PRINCESS DEALER IN THE WORLD, GIVING THE ORGANISATION TERRIFIC REACH.

far from alone in that. But where we really score is that, by being the largest Princess dealer in the world, there’s a strong probability that we supplied the boat new, and given our high levels of customer retention, every chance that we’ve handled the sale of the boat through its lifetime too. It’s really not unusual to be able to trace the history of a boat through our archives right back to day one, and more than that, have a member of our team somewhere that handled the sale of the boat and that knows not only the current owner personally, but quite likely the one before him and possibly even the one before that! It’s a situation that often allows us to give buyers a unique perspective, not only into what the boat is about today, but first hand information about the history of that vessel. It creates a very powerful and effective sales tool that benefits both buyer and seller, and helps keep us number one for brokerage Princess”.

“We have our own offices in key positions throughout the UK and Mediterranean of course” John tells me, “but beyond that we have a huge network of sub dealers right across Europe, all of whom have access to PBI for both vendors and purchasers”. Backing all this up is a massive marketing campaign encompassing an on line presence via a dedicated website plus all major international boat sales portals such as Yachtworld and Rightboat.com. In addition, full page advertising is carried in premier marine titles such as Motor Boats Monthly and Motor Boat and Yachting, and regular email bulletins are sent out to the group’s massive database to update clients with latest brokerage stock. Beyond all that, what really gives clients confidence is the sheer depth of experience and knowledge displayed by people like John and the rest of the team. “I’ve been with the company for twenty years” says John, “dealing with both new and used Princess so I know these boats inside out, and I’m

Just an hour from London, the marina is located on the Eastern edge of the city of Brighton, beneath the South Downs at the foot of dramatic chalk cliffs. Approaching from the sea, Brighton Marina couldn’t be easier to find. The marina can accommodate over 1,500 boats, with berths available for vessels up to 38m. With spacious fairways and berths, there is plenty of room to manoeuvre your boat within the marina. Boasting a multiplex cinema, bowling alley, casino and a David Lloyd Health and Fitness Club, you’re never short of excitement at Brighton Marina. If you love to shop you’ll enjoy exploring the waterfront; here you’ll find high fashion, sportswear, accessories and books. Foodies can choose from a fantastic array of cafés, bars and over 20 restaurants, with culinary temptations from around the world as well as traditional English fare all in one place. Visitors from the continent add to the marina’s unique café culture. Brighton itself has plenty to offer those who want to explore further afield. With its Regency architecture, lively arts scene, unique shops and beautiful green parks, the list of things to see and do is endless. The city’s famous pier is just a 20-minute stroll along the beach. Back on the water, Brighton’s friendly yacht club opens its doors to visitors and berth holders alike, plus there is a huge variety of watersports, from windsurfing and waterskiing to scuba diving and charter boat fishing. There is also a small fleet of commercial fishing boats based at the marina and their catch is a sight worth seeing.

crossing opens up the delights of Fécamp, famous for its Benedictine distillery. To the west, idyllic Chichester Marina and the popular cruising grounds of the Solent can be reached within a few hours.

The marina provides a complete range of onsite facilities, including two launderettes, ample showers and Wi-Fi. The fuel bay, selling both diesel and unleaded petrol, is open 24 hours a day. The marina offers a quality boatyard service that makes use of a 60 tonne boat hoist, as well as a 15 tonne boat mover and static crane for mast work and engine lifts. There are also many marine services on hand in the Marine Trade Centre to help you with all aspects of your boat maintenance. For those who need to work under cover, there is a fully enclosed boatshed that is available to rent. Brighton is unrivalled in facilities, customer service and the scope of its onsite entertainment. Such a large and vibrant marina that retains a fantastic community spirit is a rare combination, making Brighton not just a great starting point, but an incredible destination marina.

Brighton Marina is a fantastic location for exploring the South Coast or a trip to France or Belgium. A 65-mile Channel
