Imperial Princess Imperial Princess receives 2013 World Superyacht Award

At the glittering World Superyacht Awards which were held in Istanbul, Turkey on the 4th May, Imperial Princess, the magnificent new 40 metre yacht from Princess Yachts won the prestigious ‘Three Deck SemiDisplacement or Planing Motor Yachts’ award. The judges felt that this yacht had been designed and built to impressively high standards. They also admired the attractive exterior lines and exterior and interior spaces, which were well decorated and laid out to ensure an optimum division between the size of guest and crew areas. This is an outstanding achievement considering this was the first foray into the arena of semi-custom superyachts for Princess Yachts International. Chris Gates, Managing Director

Super Yacht Award - Imperial Princess

at Princess Yachts International, said: “We are extremely honoured that Imperial Princess has been awarded in her category at the 2013 World Superyacht Awards. The standard of yachts within her class were exemplary and we are delighted to receive this internationally recognised accolade for our Princess 40M. This is a tremendous achievement for all involved.” Princess Motor Yacht Sales, the world’s largest Princess Yachts dealer, played a significant part in this yacht’s success. Imperial Princess was sold to a Princess Motor Yacht Sales client who had early input into the project process which took over two years. During this period, Princess were able to draw on his experience of being a previous Princess owner and a client of Princess Motor Yacht Sales, integrating

7

some of his ideas into the design of the yacht. Sitting around the table with the shipyard for over two years prior to yacht completion, Princess Motor Yacht Sales and their client have maintained a close relationship from inception to ownership of the Imperial Princess. Max Whale, Marketing Director at Princess Motor Yacht Sales, said: “Having worked with this client from concept, design and build to delivery and ownership, we can now offer this unique experience in owning stunning award winning yachts to future clients.

The 40M is a quality yacht and combines cutting-edge technology with superb performance and the ultimate in on-board opulence. Weighing in at 395 gross registered tonnage, the superyacht has twin diesel engines packing some 7,000 horsepower, and is capable of 23 knots. As the largest composite motor yacht ever built in UK, as well as the most luxurious, the 40M can also boast one of the largest hulls in the world constructed using high-tech resin-infusion technology, for optimum strength, quality and weight. All M Class Yacht enquiries can be handled by Sales Director of Princess Motor Yacht Sales, Roger Lipman on sales@princess.co.uk or on +44 (0) 1489 557755.

Show Report 8

Perhaps one of the most impressive aspects of the inaugural British Motor Yacht Show was just how quickly it came together. The original idea was conceived in January during discussions at the London Boat Show between the hierarchy of Princess, Fairline and Sunseeker. A couple of meetings were held subsequently but the final decision to go ahead was only taken in March. Premier Marinas, owners of the marina in Swanwick, Southampton where the show was held, pulled out all the stops and with the involvement of the three dealers plus support from companies such as Laundau UK, Caterpillar engines, Volvo Penta, MTU, Simrad and Garmin, not to mention Rybrook Cars who fielded a brand new McLaren 12C Spider and a Rolls Royce Phantom Coupe, the whole event came together in just eight weeks. “What we wanted to achieve” comments Princess Motor Yacht Sales Managing Director Colin Capewell “...is a completely relaxed environment where anyone with an interest in any of our products could have a quiet, hassle free opportunity to spend as much time as they liked comparing our boats with the major competition, and where we’d have the time to look after them properly”. Each dealer had five brand new boats at the event,

as well as a selection of used craft. Princess were also showcasing their brand new Approved Used scheme, complete with an immaculate Princess 45 to underscore the benefits, and in a real coup for the show the very first Princess V48 was given its public debut. David Coleman, show visitor and owner of a Princess V42, summed up the show. “Compared to the big shows in London and Southampton, this felt far more personal and a lot more focussed. By having the three top class brands together I could wander between them without the distraction of a myriad of other makes and I felt extremely well looked after”. It would appear then that the British Motor Yacht Show achieved its goal. Congratulations to Mr Henry Firman for winning the My Princess champagne prize draw at the 2013 British Motor Yacht Show. Owners Profile

11

John and Brenda Craxford It’s a closely held tenet of the Princess Motor Yacht Sales business ethic that you never judge a potential customer. Good advice, as anyone watching a young John Craxford water-skiing behind his old Shetland 535 with a barely adequate 50hp outboard back in 1968 probably didn’t think that they were observing a future powerboat racing champion and one day multiple Princess Yacht owner. John’s powerboat racing career began to germinate in 1971, just three years after his first tentative steps afloat in that old Shetland. He’d progressed to a Tremlett 21 by that time, and was out watching the Cowes-Torquay powerboat race when, like most spectators, he thought “I wouldn’t mind a crack at that”. John was rather more proactive than most however, and two years later he was lining up at Cowes in a Fairy Spearfish called “Ford Fantasy”. Clearly not someone to do things by halves, over the next three years John entered thirty five races, including the Cowes-Torquay each year, his tenacity eventually paying off with a second place in the “Beaverbrook Trophy” series, the cruiser class of the Cowes-Torquay that had originally sparked his interest. In 1975 John bought “HTS”, a 33 foot Souter with a pair of Sabre 365hp diesels and went on to win the Toyota sponsored European Championships, netting himself a small yellow Toyota as first prize in the process! By 1978 he’d progressed to “Roman Sabre”, an aluminium catamaran with a pair of

400hp Sabre engines with which he won the European Championships again in 1982. After a sabbatical in 1983, John was back with a Don Shead designed forty foot raceboat, the evocative “Double 2 Shirts”, running second in the Round Britain Race of 1984 before mechanical maladies put paid to a podium finish. A year and a change of sponsor later the boat was bright red and called “Follet Cars” but it had been renamed “Sponsor Wanted” by the time John and his crew clinched the World Class Two Powerboat Championships in 1988. 1989 saw a brief spell with a full on Class One boat, a CUV powered by twin 750hp Issotta Fraschini engines, capable of scorching up the water at ninety miles an hour. But the following year a combination of successive mechanical failures and the onset of the recession put paid to John’s stellar fourteen year powerboat racing career, however it certainly didn’t put him off high performance boating.

So what does an experienced mariner with a keen eye for a good boat and a yen for serious performance buy when the racing is over? Why, a Princess of course. John’s first boat post racing was a 1988 Princess 45 fitted with a pair of Caterpillar 3208TA 375hp diesel engines. Whilst his thirst for speed may have abated slightly, his hunger to get out on the water clearly hadn’t. “We did 1,500 hours in that boat in the four years we had it”, John reminisces. “Fuel was much cheaper then, we could fill it for less than £200. We went everywhere in it, up the River Seine to Paris, down to the Morbiham in Brittany, the Channel Islands, the length of the south coast of the UK, there wasn’t many places that boat didn’t

take us”. Brenda, John’s wife, recalls a couple of their more ‘exciting’ trips. “We’re a bit older now and tend to prefer fairer weather, but back then we’d take that boat through almost anything, safe in the knowledge that it would look after us”.

12

In 1994 John and Brenda bought their first brand new Princess, a 440 from Princess Motor Yacht Sales in Plymouth and immediately set about racking up a serious number of hours in a similar fashion. “Boats like to be used” says John, “and we like to use them. It doesn’t do them any good to sit about”. Over the next five years John and Brenda added 1,500 hours to that boat, criss-crossing the channel and taking in France between Honfleur and Morlaix before returning to Princess Motor Yacht Sales once more and taking delivery of a Princess 52. So pleased were they with the 52 that it lasted eight years until the lure of the Princess 54 finally swayed them to change. “We fell in love with the fantastic full beam owner’s cabin” Brenda tells me. “It’s a bit opulent for two” comments John, “but we’re on the boat most weekends, it’s our bolt-hole”. PMYS have carried out a few subtle modifications to help tailor the boat to their needs. From something as simple as a row of coat hooks in the third cabin (“...our junk room” John says) to the ¾ sized dishwasher under the stairs, the 54 fits their needs perfectly. So why a Princess and why from PMYS? “Because the boats have always looked after us and, equally importantly, so have all the staff” says John. “Nothing is ever too much trouble, the response to any issues is always prompt, the service is second to none and everyone always has a smile on their face”. As the afternoon warmth spreads across the teak laid cockpit John and Brenda certainly look very at home aboard “Kiss”; their opulent bolt-hole and the ultimate boat for the ultimate retired racer.

The stunning new

Princess V48 The sleek, dynamic and exceptionally spacious new Princess V48 is a highly versatile sports yacht delivering excitement and comfort in equal measure. There are two versions of this exciting new sports yacht. The “Deck Saloon” version which had its debut at the British Motor Yacht Show in May ahead of the full international launch at the Southampton Boat Show in September and an “Open” version which features a spacious open cockpit with tender garage and sunbed to extend the appeal and application which will debut at the Cannes Boat Show in September. An enclosed main deck saloon provides a wonderful escape from the heat of the day yet for true ‘open boating’ this can be swiftly transformed via a large powered roof and triple sliding doors that connect to the aft cockpit to create one large alfresco area. Below decks the lower saloon provides a more intimate haven in which to relax and is ideally located adjacent to the galley which has been equipped to

With the scene set like a film premier, 200 invited guests came together to celebrate this landmark occasion. A spectacular evening celebrating the opening of the new Princess Port Adriano office took place on May 4th.

by a spontaneous rapturous round of applause and cheers by the guests.

This new office opening is a sign of the commitment and confidence that Princess Motor Yacht Sales have in the market place and their own product. As the largest dealers of Princess Yachts globally, PMYS are very keen to show their loyalty to their current and future customers and also the Balearic Islands with Mallorca in particular being singled out. By opening in Port Adriano PMYS are recognising the need to improve service levels to the ever growing demands of Mallorca motor yacht enthusiasts particularly German nationals who regularly visit the area.

The star of the evening, a Princess V78 yacht, was quietly resting at a berth some 50 metres away. When the guests were invited to feast their eyes the yacht was lit up to reveal her full splendour, drawing gasps from the appreciative audience. A trademark design of Princess, the Princess V78 yacht provided the perfect back drop for the 5 elegant models who were part of a fashion show which commenced from the yacht. The fashion show was presented by Lirouage boutique with their new collections from Emilio Pucci, Roberto Cavalli and Iceberg. After all, Princess boats are part of the ultra luxurious brand LVMH group so it’s a natural synergy.

Max Whale, Marketing Director, pointed out the achievements thus far in Mallorca and paid tribute to the hard work and efforts of Nigel James, manager at Puerto Portals for the last 15 years. Together with his team they have built up a credible and marvellous reputation. He went further, explaining that PMYS is growing year by year and even though the whole industry is facing tough economic challenges, Princess are more than adept at seeing out the storm, with relentless new model development. The new office lead by Oliver Lehnen is tangible proof of this. Max revealed that the Princess 40 Metre yacht had just won the Superyacht award in Istanbul which was met

News from Princess Yachts Menorca

taking advantage of Menorca’s ideal location as a base port for cruising in the Balearics

Princess Yachts Menorca were honoured to welcome a brand new V72 to the Port of Mahón on 11 June 2013. Berthed just outside their offices in the centre of the Port, Ruby Tuesday will be taking advantage of Menorca’s ideal location as a base port for cruising in the Balearics with the full support of the Princess Menorca team. Ruby Tuesday has already enjoyed a leisurely cruise to Ibiza and an overnight sojourn on Isla de Cabrera, a national park located off the coast of Mallorca. Cabrera is a restricted zone due to its rich wildlife and several rare species of flora, fauna and birdlife but buoy berths are available for a limited number of boats if booked in advance. Princess Yachts Menorca are able to arrange visitor berths throughout the Balearics and offer a full range of marine services for vessels based in or visiting Menorca.

It is now even easier to reach Menorca with new flights available from Thomson Airways, Easyjet and Ryanair. Thomson fly direct to Menorca from all major airports in the UK and have added a new route this summer from Leeds Bradford. Easyjet offer flights between the UK and Menorca as well as flights from Menorca direct to Milan and Paris. Ryanair fly from East Midlands to Menorca as well as better links from Menorca to mainland Spain with regular flights to Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia. For all Princess enquiries in Menorca please contact: Tel: +34 971 354 208 E-Mail: info@clearwater.es

The Princess V52 arrives in the Shetland Isles The delivery of the new Princess V52 Simmer Dim to Scalloway Shetland Isles June the 19th 2013: The brand new Princess V52 Simmer Dim, having been commissioned at Key Yachting’s Princess Scotland base in Kip Marina, was ready to head to her new home in the Shetland Isles. The fruits of a 20 month planning, boatbuilding and commissioning programme had come into season. Simmer Dim is equipped with twin Caterpillar 715’s, a D8 Eberspacher cabin heater to deal with cold Scottish nights, and a Zodiac 3.4M tender with a 30hp outboard, set on chocks on the hydraulic swim platform. Simmer Dim’s owners David and Heather are extremely experienced boat owners; David runs a marine engineering business in Shetland, his knowledge of boats and the sea is extensive. Kip Marina is located on the Clyde estuary on Scotland’s West Coast. The planned passage was a 500 mile route that would see the boat exiting the Clyde, rounding the Mull of Kintyre, heading up through the sound of the Jura, through the Firth of Lorne, arriving in the former fishing town of Fort William. Fort William leads into the Caledonian Canal which cuts from west to east across Scotland. The canal breaks into the North Sea at Inverness. From Inverness to the North East tip of Scotland is 120 miles, Shetland is a further 120 miles north, an isolated archipelago far out into the Atlantic Ocean. Crew for the trip were the owner-skipper David, and Drew , a lifetime friend of David’s and also an engineer. Completing the team was Pete Cameron, the Princess Scotland manager and Scottish West Coast navigation expert. Departure day 0500 hrs: Simmer Dim slipped her lines in Kip Marina. The wind was 12-15 knots with a classic Scottish mizzle dampening the air. Into the Clyde. the engines were warmed up and a cruising speed of 26 knots was set. Passing close to Holy Isle, the monastery isle in the lee of the island of Arran at 07.05, the breeze had dropped and the surface of the Clyde was mirror calm, we could only speculate on the thoughts of the monks as 52 foot of gleaming Princess flashed by. 08.15 Simmer Dim felt her first Atlantic swells as she exited the Clyde rounding the iconic Mull of Kintyre. Turning north, north east heading through the sound of Jura, past the island of Ghia at 0933. Sadly the visibility

was affected by a ‘harr’ which is an east coast weather phenomenon that a southerner would describe as fog. Thus in order to see the Paps of Jura and the smoke from the Islay and Jura whisky distilleries, Simmer Dim will someday have to make a return visit. Throughout the passage, engine monitoring was carried out: • By way of the excellent Caterpillar electronic monitoring system, • By use of a Raymarine camera mounted in the engine room, this allowed the crew to check the levels of the engine coolant tanks on the Raymarine chart plotter display • By way of a physical visit to the engine room, once an hour Skerryvore light flew by at 1005. This single isolated rock is described by Pete Cameron as ‘the only boulder in the whole place.’ In an area of super deep water where you can sail within touching distance of the cliffs, one isolated rock 3/4 of a mile offshore is an anomaly. Half an hour later the full tidal effect of the Great Race of Corryvreckan, gave Simmer Dim a healthy speed boost as she swept past Dorus Mhor. With the engines now having run enough hours to be opened up for the first time, David took the opportunity to see what she could do. From a cruising speed of 26 knots at a relatively economical 1913 revs, full throttle produced a speed through the water of 35 knots which with the super tidal boost, gave an amazing speed over the ground of 47 knots through the Fladda race!! Throttling back to cruising speed another new phenomenon was encountered; Fladda, like Corryvreckan, is renowned for its tidal whirlpools, Simmer Dim’s autopilot computer had to work very hard as the whirlpools caused instant course changes of as much as 45 degrees. Pete Cameron noted that in a slow yacht one would never attempt to transit this area in anything other than slack or fair tide. Excitement over, the harbour town of Oban was passed at 11am, Loch Linnhe which leads to Fortwilliam was mirror calm. 11. 34 Simmer Dim is moored alongside at Fort William at the foot of Neptunes Staircase, the incredible feat of engineering that comprises 8 locks, raising boats from sea-level to the Caledonian canal, a vertical height of 64 feet. The 171 mile passage had been accomplished in 6.5 hrs at a tidally assisted average speed of 27knots! Pete Cameron reflected that in a sailboat this was usually a three day trip. Each lock in Neptunes Staircase is 180 ft by 40ft. Constructed by the famous Scottish engineer Thomas Telford in 1803, Telford was instructed to build the canal in order to stem emigration from Scotland. It was thought that the jobs created

by both the construction of the canal and the benefits the canal system would bring, would be a major benefit to employment in the region. Interestingly the original lock dimensions were increased mid-project to accommodate a new generation of frigates. With 1430hp of smooth caterpillar power on tap, the crew of Simmer Dim reflected upon the hard work that must have been involved, when men and horses were the only way to move sail-powered warships through the canal. Neptunes staircase originally had 36 hand capstans to operate its lock gates. In a £60million investment these have now been replaced by push button hydraulics, much to the relief of Simmer Dim’s crew. Mooring for the night at the top of Neptunes Staircase allowed the opportunity for a nice dinner ashore. Day 2 dawned mild and wet, slipping her lines at 0630 allows Simmer Dim to be first in the queue for the first of 10 swing bridges that must be passed. The bridges plus a further 21 locks, are all operated by British waterways who charged a fee of £260 for a 10 day pass. The crew reflected that given time you could have a nice cruising holiday within the waterway system at less than the cost of regular marina berthing. The” canal” is in fact part canal and part Lochs,: Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and Loch Ness. These lochs are broad expanses of freshwater where Simmer Dim could again show her pace, thus ensuring a rapid transit to Inverness where she locked out into the Moray Firth at 1600. 1555 litres were required to refill the fuel tanks. A looming Atlantic low pressure system suggested immediate departure or face a lengthy delay. Shunning the delights of Inverness and escorted out of the Firth into the North Sea by a pod of dolphins, Simmer Dim climbed to her optimum cruising speed of 26 knots. Three hours later Wick (and John’o’Groats), the most northerly tip of the British mainland, was abeam and with the weather front looming, the decision was made to make the final 120 mile dash for home.

Skimming past the Orkney Islands in great conditions, the weather deteriorated as the remote island of Fair Isle was passed, a huge whale was sighted as the wind increased to 25-30 knots and long Atlantic swells of 6-8ft rolled in from the West. With a water depth of over 100metres the swells were benign and Simmer Dim flew across them into rapidly diminishing visibility as fog surrounded the Shetland isles. All resources were now on watch: the AIS, the radar and 3 pairs of sharply focused eyes, to beat the impending storm meant maintaining high speed, where prudence would normally dictate a slower speed. Fortunately these Northern waters are sparsely populated. Sumburgh Head, the Southern tip of Shetland, was shrouded in fog, thankfully as Simmer Dim entered the home straight of Burra Voe the fog rolled back, making the narrow approach easy to manage for David with his local knowledge. 1240 on Saturday morning, whilst lining up for her berth at West Burra, the sky lit up to a firework display organised by Heather, the family and friends. David was surprised and delighted at this secretly planned event. To the crew it now became clear why there had been so many phone calls checking on progress. Simmer Dim is the local name for 24 hour daylight which Shetland experiences each summer. As if beautifully choreographed, Simmer Dim’s weather dictated arrival, coincided with Simmer Dim day June the 22nd. David and Peter were absolutely astounded by the efficiency of the V52 as an express passage maker, a 4 day trip had been completed in half the expected time. The achievable fuel range was greater than anticipated, the seakeeping was exemplary. For Princess enquiries in Scotland please contact: Tel: +44 (0) 1475520163 Email: scotland@keyyachting.com
