Walter Borden, born and raised in New Glasgow, has had a career spanning 52 years as a film and theatre actor, poet, teacher, and playwright. Active in the civil rights movement, Walter has navigated an industry not only as a Black man, but as a Gay man as well. His unique perspective, exceptional storytelling, and incredible life are just a handful of reasons I knew this beau tiful, and thoughtful piece was the
right choice to kick off our Diamond Anniversary Celebration.

Our history at Neptune stretches just a few years past Walter Borden’s ca reer - an incredible accomplishment for both. In celebrating our longev ity, Neptune is reinforcing its com mitment to the artistic and cultural community and continuing its con tribution to the vibrancy of the place we call home. I am thrilled with the season of programming we have put together for our patrons and the community at large.
From intimate solo shows, to vibrant musicals - each show this season is a love letter to the community we serve. Themes of healing, hope, per severance, and joy resonate across our programming, telling stories that we have not traditionally seen on our stages. In recognition of Walter’s invaluable contribution to Canadian theatre, and his legacy of mentorship, activism and creativity throughout his prolific career, we are happy to announce that we are designating our greenroom, The Walter Borden Greenroom.
In selecting the space to name after such a luminary, I came to the realiza tion that Walter has likely spent many a day, week, month in our greenroom; the space where actors gather to pre pare for their performances, where they live during a showcall and where they talk, share and live large portions of their lives. I imagine all the time that Walter has spent in Neptune’s green

joined the Neptune Theatre company in 1972. Over the last 50 years he has performed in Djanet Sears’ Harlem Duet; Michel Trem blay’s Hosanna, Angel’s in America, Driving Miss Daisy, Whale Riding Weather, and Tartuffe, among many others. The Last Epistle of Tightrope Time is a play that Walter has been creating and living for forty years. As this iteration of the play premieres at Neptune Theatre, we are looking back at his impact on our company.

A word or two: You know, there have been, and continue to be, many opinions voiced concern ing the mes sage contained within The Last Epistle of Tight rope Time - as answers to “what’s it all about?” And this is precisely as it should be. Yet, if whatever it is to whomever encounters it is grounded in the knowing that the work is fash ioned from truth, honesty, sincerity, simplicity, passion and compassion, sympathy and empathy, under standing, kindness and infinite love, then the tango that will be danced between this work and its new found partner should hopefully be a tru

ly unique experience. If it is simply understood that the piece is written in homage of the illumination of the re siliency of the human spirit and that that illumination is powered by the “how” of how we are here as opposed to the “why” of why we are here, which truly is, as it necessarily should and must be, an intrigue for adolescents as the late, great Lorraine Hansberry wisely stated, then every thing else will flow as easily and nat urally as the Universe intends. So, in the silence of your own personal se cret night, come drift awhile and sift awhile through some of the cham bers in the mansions of my mind where you will quite probably run into …
